One of the world’s largest “blue carbon” ecosystems, Louisiana’s tidal wetlands on the US Gulf of Mexico coast, is rapidly being lost. Louisiana’s strong legal, regulatory, and monitoring framework, developed for one of the world’s largest tidal wetland systems, provides an opportunity for a programmatic approach to blue carbon accreditation to support restoration of these ecologically and economically important tidal wetlands. Louisiana’s coastal wetlands span ∼1.4 million ha and accumulate 5.5–7.3 Tg yr−1 of blue carbon (organic carbon), ∼6%–8% of tidal marsh blue carbon accumulation globally. Louisiana has a favorable governance framework to advance blue carbon accreditation, due to …

Habitat Use And Movements Of Parrotfishes In A Hawaiian Coral Reef Seascape, Senifa F. Annandale, Jason P. Turner, Daniel L. Lippi, Michael Dance, R. J.David Wells, Jay R. Rooker

Faculty Publications

Parrotfishes (family Scaridae) are important to coral reef ecosystems and highly prized by both commercial and recreational fishers in the Hawaiian Islands. Although parrotfishes are known to be strictly diurnal, our knowledge of their habitat use and movement patterns across daily timescales in tropical systems is still somewhat limited. Here, acoustic telemetry was used to determine parrotfish habitat use and movements within a coral reef seascape at Puakō, Hawai‘i. An array of acoustic receivers was deployed in a nearshore reef to track fine-scale movements of two common species: ember parrotfish (Scarus rubroviolaceus) and palenose parrotfish (Scarus psittacus). Transmitters were mounted …

Variability In Estuarine Habitat Use Of A Threatened Species In The Northern Gulf Of Mexico: Implications For Coastal Restoration, Jenna N. Brogdon, Ashley Baer, Glenn Constant, Cassandra N. Glaspie, Michael D. Miner, Ioannis Y. Georgiou, Michael A. Dance

Faculty Publications

Coastal restoration projects often require sediment resources borrowed from estuarine or marine ecosystems. A generalized additive modeling (GAM) framework was used to characterize fish-habitat relationships and predict spatiotemporal and ontogenetic shifts of Gulf sturgeon distribution within an impacted estuary in the northern Gulf of Mexico, Lake Pontchartrain. Habitat use and movement of Gulf sturgeon (n = 103) was monitored using an array of acoustic receivers (n = 81) from 2016 to 2019. Telemetry data was paired with environmental conditions hindcast from a high-resolution hydrodynamic model to develop GAMs for three life stages of Gulf sturgeon: juvenile, sub-adult, and adult. Model …

Exploring The Metabolic And Mitogenic Potential Of A Hyper-Stable Variant Of Fgf1, Emma Starr, Oshadi Edirisinghe, Thallapuranam Krishnaswamy Suresh Kumar Jan 2024

Exploring The Metabolic And Mitogenic Potential Of A Hyper-Stable Variant Of Fgf1, Emma Starr, Oshadi Edirisinghe, Thallapuranam Krishnaswamy Suresh Kumar

Inquiry: The University of Arkansas Undergraduate Research Journal

Fibroblast growth factors (FGFs) are a family of 22 human cytokines involved in critical cellular processes, such as proliferation, differentiation, metabolism, angiogenesis, tumor metastasis, and wound healing. Among these, fibroblast growth factor 1 (FGF1) possesses a powerful mitogenic potential as it can nonspecifically bind to all four FGF receptors. However, the therapeutic applications of FGF1 are hindered by its inherent thermal and proteolytic instability, especially at physiological temperatures. This is believed to be attributed to the heparin-binding pocket at the C-terminus, which contains numerous positively charged residues that repel each other. To combat this instability, FGF1 binds to a negatively …

Go Green: A Carbon Tracking Tool For The Berlin, Green City Fsp, Andy Kotz, Chloe Nicolaou, Osezele Okoruwa, Rujuta Pandit, Julian Perez-Doval, Stephen Veatch

ENGS 89/90 Reports

The Berlin Green City Foreign Study Program (FSP) is co-hosted by the Dartmouth College German and Engineering Departments. On the FSP , students take courses including ENGS37 (Introduction to Environmental Engineering) and ENGS 45 (Sustainable Urban Systems), but the program has thus far lacked a formal curriculum and conversation around sustainable living and practices. The recommendations and deliverables in this report are intended to generate a culture of sustainability in Dartmouth students' everyday lives, at home and abroad. Our solution is two-fold: a web-based tool for students to track their carbon behavior, and a curriculum designed to educate students on …

Uv Self-Sterilizing Central Line Catheter, Madeleine Brown, Anna Byrd, Taylor Floyd, Eoin Hourihane, Anna Pahl

ENGS 89/90 Reports

Central-line associated bloodstream infections (CLABSI) are a potentially lethal side effect of central-line catheter insertion and use. Currently, there are no targeted approaches to reduce the risk of developing a CLABSI. This project aims to develop a UV-based sterilization system to sterilize incoming catheter fluid. The final design is a single-channel attachment that attaches to a patient catheter port via Luer locks, with UV-LED diodes placed on top of a quartz glass window in the channel to sterilize fluid as it flows through the device. This report describes four primary technical objectives, including measuring the radiation achieved by UV-LED diodes, …

Don't Fear The Reaper? How Generative Artificial Intelligence Is Changing The Landscape Of Posthumous Communication Technology, Samuel Hoy Brown Vii Jan 2024

Don't Fear The Reaper? How Generative Artificial Intelligence Is Changing The Landscape Of Posthumous Communication Technology, Samuel Hoy Brown Vii

American University Law Review

Death and life. Yin and yang. The beginning and the end. But what if the end was only the beginning for those we leave behind?

Advancements in generative artificial intelligence technology have paved the way for “real” conversations with the people we really love. Companies across the globe are tapping into the $100 billion posthumous communication industry through the development of algorithms, chatbots, and in some instances, fully immersive virtual reality experiences with those no longer with us. As our society grapples with understanding the implications of artificial intelligence both generally and in the bereavement process, what may be seen …

December 2023 marked 50 years since the Endangered Species Act (ESA) was signed into law. The ESA has proven resilient to numerous legal challenges and saved many species from extinction. But its overall success has been debated, as the list of endangered and threatened species continues to grow, and only 54 species have been taken off of the list completely. On October 26, 2023, the Environmental Law Institute hosted a panel of experts who explored the successes and shortcomings of the statute and discussed what might happen next as climate change increases the risk of extinction. Below, we present a …

Survey Of Occupational Hygiene Professional Practice In Spanish-Speaking Countries, Thomas P. Fuller, Jennifer Peterson Jan 2024

Survey Of Occupational Hygiene Professional Practice In Spanish-Speaking Countries, Thomas P. Fuller, Jennifer Peterson

Faculty Publications – Health Sciences

Professional credentialing schemes based on experience and examination are used to clarify the scope and required competencies associated with the practice of a profession. National occupational hygiene (OH) credentials developed in 17 nations have been recognized by the International Occupational Hygiene Association (IOHA) to meet or exceed the requirements of a model certification program. To date, there is no credentialing or certification scheme for occupational hygienists in Spanish-speaking regions. To fill this void, a new credentialing body has been created named the Iberoamerican Board of Occupational Hygiene (JIHO). As a first step to the development of a certification exam for …

Avian Extraembryonic Membranes Respond To Yolk Corticosterone Early In Development, Emily P. Harders, Mitch Agustin, Ryan T. Paitz Jan 2024

Avian Extraembryonic Membranes Respond To Yolk Corticosterone Early In Development, Emily P. Harders, Mitch Agustin, Ryan T. Paitz

Faculty Publications – Biological Sciences

During times of maternal stress, developing embryos can be exposed to elevated levels of glucocorticoids which can affect development and permanently alter offspring phenotype. In placental species, the placenta mediates fetal exposure to maternal glucocorticoids via metabolism, yet the placenta itself responds to glucocorticoids to regulate offspring growth and development. In oviparous species, maternal glucocorticoids can be deposited into the egg yolk and are metabolized early in development. This metabolism is mediated by the extraembryonic membranes, but it is unknown if the extraembryonic membranes also respond to maternal glucocorticoids in a way comparable to the placenta. In this study, we …

Can Phytoremediation-Induced Changes In The Microbiome Improve Saline/Sodic Soil And Plant Health?, Achal Neupane, Duncan Jukubowski, Douglas Fiedler, Liping Gu, Sharon A. Clay, David E. Clay, Shin-Yi Marzano

Agronomy, Horticulture and Plant Science Faculty Publications

Increasing soil salinity and/or sodicity is an expanding problem in the Northern Great Plains (NGP) of North America. This study investigated the impact of phytoremediation on the soil microbiome and if changes, in turn, had positive or negative effects on plant establishment. Amplicon sequencing and gas chromatograph/mass spectrometer analysis compared root metabolites and microbial composition of bulk vs. rhizosphere soils between two soil types (productive and saline/sodic). Beta-diversity analysis indicated that bacterial and fungal communities from both the bulk and rhizosphere soils from each soil type clustered separately, indicating dissimilar microbial composition. Plant species also influenced both root-associated bacterial and …

A Bayesian Approach To The Analysis Of Dose-Response Data: Estimating Natural Survivorship Without Abbott’S Correction And Inclusion Of Overdispersion Estimates, Michael A. Caprio, Jose B. Malaquias, Dominic Reisig

CALS Publications

We assessed the utility of a Bayesian analysis of dose-mortality curves using probit analysis. A Bayesian equivalent of a conventional single population probit analysis using Abbott’s correction demonstrated the ability of the Bayesian model to recover parameters from generative data. We then developed a model that removed Abbott’s correction and estimated natural survivorship as part of the overall model fitting process. Based on WAIC (information content) scores, this model was selected over the model using Abbott’s corrected data in 196 out of 200 randomly generated datasets. This suggests that considerable information on control survivorship exists in the response to treated …

Several invasion ecology hypotheses explain patterns of invasion, but these effects are often complex and multifaceted. Within the study of aquatic invasive species, small aquatic ecosystems are often neglected, despite them representing most global freshwater bodies. This study uses community composition and environmental and geographic factors to explain the occurrence of invasive species in small lakes in the southeastern United States. Specifically, this study predicted that several ecosystem factors would predict the probability of occurrence of invasive species of the lakes studied. Four of the most common invasive species were selected as the focus of this study: Alternanthera philoxeroides, Cyperus …
