Short-Term Temporal Trends Of A Coral Reef In Samana (Dominican Republic): The Value Of A Permanent Monitoring Program To Identify Drivers Of Rapid Change, Aldo Croquer, Someira Zambrano, D. Yasmín Evangelista-Perez, Samuel King, Sergio Guendulain-Garcia, Maria F Villalpando, Rita Sellares-Blasco

Gulf and Caribbean Research

Permanent monitoring programs are valuable to identify drivers of ecosystem trends. For example, in 2021, we reported the first record of Stony Coral Tissue Loss Disease (sctld) along the northeastern coast of the Dominican Republic, affecting major reef—building coral species with a prevalence above 30%. However, a few sites such as Carenero remained unaffected by sctld for almost 2 years. The average coral cover in this site was about 18—25% (mean 18.3% ± sd 1.5), and disease prevalence did not exceed 7% in the coral community. During the first quarter of 2022, a few colonies (

Fungal Endophytes In Native Prairie Plants Vs. Lespedeza Cuneata, Ilyana Martinez, Ilana Fay Zeitzer, Noah Brown, Anthony Yannarell

Parkland Science Scholars

Fungal leaf endophytes(FLE) are microorganisms that live in the leaf tissues of plants, influencing plant health, growth, and stress resistance. The prairie ecosystem, with its diverse flora, provides an ideal environment for studying the symbiotic relationships between endophytes and plants.

In recent years, the invasive species Lespedeza cuneata has become increasingly prevalent, continuously invading native prairie communities. The Phillips Tract Research Area (PHRE), a prairie established in 2018 for research purposes, has also been invaded by L. cuneata. PHRE was designed to investigate the impact of pesticide drift on prairie restoration. Despite various management efforts, L. cuneata has persistently invaded …

Reflexivity Of The Lived Research Experiences Of A Doctoral Student Through Communities Of Practice, Shui Kau Chiu Jan 2024

Reflexivity Of The Lived Research Experiences Of A Doctoral Student Through Communities Of Practice, Shui Kau Chiu

School of General Education & Languages (THEi)

Doctoral students and apprentices are much alike. Doctoral students are treated as junior academic scholars. They must follow and learn different knowledge and research skills from their senior academic scholars, mainly supervisors and other congenial faculty members within the department. During the process, reflectivity is one of their vital self-fulfilment tools to elucidate, contemplate, ruminate, and then internalize all the given prescriptions. By adopting communities of practice as a theoretical framework, this article has employed an auto-ethnographical approach aimed at reflecting the author’s lived research experiences as a doctoral student in Hong Kong. By revealing the journeys of accommodating reflexivity, …

IEPs are customized plans designed to support students with diverse learning needs, which can encompass a broad spectrum of disabilities and learning differences (Shaw, 2021). Providing learners with an IEP is an integral part of Special Education, however, there are a host of overarching challenges faced by students with IEPs in science education, especially in environmental science classes. In this thesis, the development and application of clay salamander models are evaluated for their potential to provide …

Brothers And Keepers: A Juxtaposition Of Intergenerational Trauma, Alex Ray Jan 2024

Brothers And Keepers: A Juxtaposition Of Intergenerational Trauma, Alex Ray

Undergraduate Review

The memoir, Brothers and Keepers, is a piece of literature that serves as a guide into the bowels of the construct that we call the “American criminal justice system.” Through the conflicting distinctions of two brothers’ lives, readers can see the ramifications of a misconstrued definition of “justice.” The memoir sees its author, John Wideman, a successful academic, professor, and writer, and his brother Robby Wideman, who receives a life sentence for a mishandled robbery, juxtaposed in several stages of life in hopes of obtaining a greater understanding of the pathology for their inherent differences while investigating the underlying implications …

Defining The Peptidyl Transferase Active Site Of The Ribosome, Erin Killeavy Jan 2024

Defining The Peptidyl Transferase Active Site Of The Ribosome, Erin Killeavy

Open Access Dissertations

The ribosome is the instrument by which all biological life on earth translates a message of ribonucleic acid (mRNA) into proteins. The modern-day ribosome has evolved into a highly complex and exceedingly efficient macromolecular machine responsible for protein synthesis. The two primary functional activities of the ribosome, decoding and peptide bond formation, have been attributed to rRNA. While three rRNA bases have precisely-defined roles in decoding, no direct role for any RNA or protein residues within the active site has been established in catalysis of peptide bond formation.

This dissertation investigates the intramolecular RNA and intermolecular protein-RNA interactions within the …

Woven Life Systems, Melanie Olde Jan 2024

Woven Life Systems, Melanie Olde

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

What is it like to be at the intersection between the natural and technological? I see plants as living cloth – can we build cloth using human-evolved technology (weaving) and natural life systems? In this practice-as-research, I take growth models from plants such as algae, then process these codes on a loom to exploring the emergence and narrative that develop.

Looms are tools and technology evolved with humans to organise systems of strands, connecting in myriad ways to form something new. Plants are systems of organised cells, dividing and branching creating functional entities. The commonalities are individual elements and rules …

Russian Sage Decomposition Rates In Sunlit And Shade Environments, Madison L. Keller, Cameron J. Bateman, Mikayla Collins, Emma Pryor Jan 2024

Russian Sage Decomposition Rates In Sunlit And Shade Environments, Madison L. Keller, Cameron J. Bateman, Mikayla Collins, Emma Pryor

Science University Research Symposium (SURS)

Many sage species can withstand extreme heat and drought climates making the plant suitable for versatile environments. Because of this, Russian sage leaves tend to decompose slower than other species. The hypothesis of this experiment was that decomposition in an area with higher sunlight would occur at a higher rate compared to the bags placed in the shade. During a twelve-week period, decomposition of Russian sage, Perovskia atriplicifolia, was studied on one of Belmont’s green roofs. The decomposition rate was determined by the use of sixteen leaf litter bags containing dried sage leaves. Eight were positioned in an area of …

A Smart Energy-Efficient Hybrid Gait Monitoring System, Elsa Joy Harris Jan 2024

A Smart Energy-Efficient Hybrid Gait Monitoring System, Elsa Joy Harris

CGU Theses & Dissertations

Triboelectric nanogenerators are devices that harvest mechanical energy from the environment and turn it into electricity. By coupling the effect of contact electrification and electrostatic induction between two materials that come into contact and then separate they can convert the irregular, low frequency, waste biomechanical energy of human motion into useful electrical energy to run small body-worn electronics. This has shown promising results in multiple applications such as self-powered motion and haptic sensing, self-charging micro-storage devices, neuromorphic computing, and designing batteryless circuits to power small wearables. This work will investigate a smart energy-efficient hybrid gait monitoring system that is powered …

Effectiveness Of Municipal Collaboration For Watershed Management In The Southern Colorado River Basin, Sasha Geschwind Jan 2024

Effectiveness Of Municipal Collaboration For Watershed Management In The Southern Colorado River Basin, Sasha Geschwind

CGU Theses & Dissertations

There are mixed arguments about the best scale of government for providing various public goods and services. Specifically, the management of a watershed, which can be categorized as a common pool resource, is generally implemented at the local government scale via National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) Municipal Separate Storm Sewer Systems (MS4) permits as issued by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA). A large body of literature argues for rethinking this scale because this does not match natural watershed boundaries. In this paper, I explore the question: Does collaboration, and type of collaboration, among jurisdictions within a watershed …

An Investigation Into Academic Clustering Among Division Ii Student Athletes, Michael Monahan, Amit Shah Jan 2024

An Investigation Into Academic Clustering Among Division Ii Student Athletes, Michael Monahan, Amit Shah

Journal of Business, Industry, and Economics

Academic clustering occurs when at least 25% of the student athletes on any given team have the same academic major. In and of itself, academic clustering is neither good nor bad, however there is the temptation for students to gravitate toward a major which is perceived to be easier, to seek to associate only with team members, or to enlist in majors which do not align with their career ambitions. Is it for flexibility and scheduling to choose an academic major to have the least impact on their sport? This study examined the athletic program at a Division II four-year …

Discovering Farmers’ Views Of On-Farm Precision Experimentation, Reagen G. Tibbs, Maria A. Boerngen

Faculty Publications - Agriculture

Precision agriculture technologies (PATs) have revolutionized agriculture production and provide many benefits to farmers. Among these benefits is the ability to conduct experiments using PATs and collaborate with researchers in a process known as on-farm precision experimentation (OFPE). OFPE is a citizen-science approach that fosters relationships and knowledge-sharing to address challenges of mutual interest. While the literature on precision agriculture is extensive, little research has addressed farmers’ willingness to conduct OFPE with researchers. Interviews with 11 Illinois farmers revealed high adoption rates of PATs. Interest in collaborating with researchers to conduct OFPE was mixed, with farmers identifying clear channels of …
