What does it mean to consider the world of AI through a Christian lens? Rapid developments in AI continue to reshape society, raising new ethical questions and challenging our understanding of the human person. Encountering Artificial Intelligence draws on Pope Francis's discussion of a culture of encounter and broader themes in Catholic social thought in order to examine how current AI applications affect human relationships in various social spheres and offers concrete recommendations for better implementation. The document also explores questions regarding personhood, consciousness, and the kinds of relationships humans might have with even the most advanced AI. Through these …

How Viable Is Viability? Artificial Womb Technology And The Threat To Abortion Access, James E. Brown
How Viable Is Viability? Artificial Womb Technology And The Threat To Abortion Access, James E. Brown
Michigan Journal of Gender & Law
The viability standard plays an important role in abortion access around much of the United States. In fact, before the Dobbs decision, the viability standard was the constitutional gatekeeper to abortion access and was uniform across the entire nation. Unfortunately, the Supreme Court has removed the constitutional right to abortion altogether. Nevertheless, I will provide an argument as to why Dobbs does not signal the end of viability-based abortion around the U.S. I will prove the importance of the viability standard even in a post-Dobbs society, highlighting its operation within various state laws, such as Michigan’s Prop. 3, as well …

Child Sacrifices: The Precarity Of Minors’ Autonomy And Bodily Integrity After Dobbs, Teri Dobbins Baxter

In Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, the Supreme Court held that there is no constitutional right to abortion. The decision has had a devastating impact on people seeking abortions in many states, and it will have an even more profound effect on the rights and lives of minors. Pregnant minors face greater risks than pregnant adults when they are forced to continue a pregnancy that can harm their physical and mental health and their educational and financial futures. Very young minors are incapable of consenting to the sexual acts that result in pregnancy, but many states require even these …

This article by six clinicians discusses the challenges and opportunities of new ABA Standard 303 (c), including the implications of and interactions between Standard 303(c) and “divisive concepts” laws and other threats to representation, academic freedom, and free speech in legal education. The article also highlights the intersection of Standard 303(c) and Standard 303(b)(3), which addresses professional identity formation; discusses opportunities to adapt current curriculum and teaching and create new curricular responses to meet the new accreditation standards and interpretations; and explores ways to resist increasing limitations and find a supportive academic community to sustain hope and resilience.

Will AI technology disrupt the current Big Tech Barons, foster competition, and ensure future disruptive innovation that improves our well-being? Or might the technology help a few ecosystems become even more powerful?
To explore this issue, our paper outlines the current digital market dynamics that lead to winner-take-most-or-all ecosystems. After examining the emerging AI foundation model supply chain, we consider several potential antitrust risks that may emerge should certain layers of the supply chain become concentrated and firms extend their power across layers. But the anticompetitive harms are not inevitable, as several countervailing factors might lessen or prevent these antitrust …

Occupational Therapy’S Role In Addressing The Mental Health Of Transitioning Postsecondary Students, Katie Koxlien, Amorelle Upton, Kiley Washnieski
Critically Appraised Topics
There is an increasing concern for mental health in university students transitioning to postsecondary education. For the purposes of this study, we were concerned with the overall mental health of university students, not specific to diagnosed mental illnesses. Mental health is “a state of mental well-being that enables people to cope with the stresses of life, realize their abilities, learn well and work well, and contribute to their community” (World Health Organization, 2022, para. 1). This may impact the individual’s ability to function on a daily basis and interact with others within their educational setting. The role of a student …
Can Functional Traits Predict Turnover Of Alpine Plant Species In Yosemite National Park?, Brooke L. Wallasch
Can Functional Traits Predict Turnover Of Alpine Plant Species In Yosemite National Park?, Brooke L. Wallasch
Biological Sciences
Alpine species are a useful tool for predicting the effects of climate change on lowland species. A growing body of research has begun assessing the question of how alpine species will change in response to changing climate. In the study of alpine plant species, some researchers have begun exploring the idea that functional traits could be predictive of turnover in alpine plant communities. In this study, I used a species’-level approach to assess the ability of six functional traits (vegetative height, generative height, leaf thickness, leaf area, leaf dry weight, specific leaf area) to predict species turnover in alpine plants …
Assessing The Relationship Between Intercultural Competence And Inclusion Competence: An Empirical Study Of Faculty At Higher Education Institutions In The United States, Casey Aldrich
Dissertation Collection
This dissertation explores the relationship between faculty’s intercultural competence and their inclusion competence within the context of Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) in the United States. The construct of intercultural competence refers to effectiveness in engaging people across cultural differences, while inclusion competence focuses on competences critical for effective performance related to inclusive behavior. Studying these two constructs together provides insight into the potential of intercultural education to contribute to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) efforts at US HEIs, especially in terms of fostering inclusive learning environments. Drawing from data collected using two psychometric assessments – the Intercultural Effectiveness Scale (IES) …

Struggling To Recover Or Recovering The Struggle: A Critical Examination Of Recovery Narratives As Discourses-In-Practice For People Suffering From Postpartum Depression, Alanna R. Miller, Alexandru Stana
Communication Studies Faculty Works
Postpartum depression is a prevalent condition, and preliminary data suggest that the COVID-19 pandemic further increased its incidence. Building on scholarship that has shown the value of exploring patients’ narratives for diagnosis and treatment, this study examines narratives of recovery in an online support forum, using theories of narrative identity. An online forum with 64 participants suffering from postpartum depression was analyzed according to grounded theory. A thematic analysis uncovered two dominant narratives: the full recovery or inevitable progress narrative, and the cyclical recovery or struggle as norm narrative. This study illustrates the complicated interaction between medical institutions, recovery narratives, …

Feasibility In Embedding Charismatic Leadership Strategies Into Social Work Applications, Lana Grinev
Doctorate of Social Work (DSW) Capstones 2024-
The six key charismatic leadership characteristics (i.e., communication, compassion, confidence, creativity, determination, and vision) are shown methodologically, thematically, and theoretically to provide organizations and systems with desired outcomes and results. This short generic qualitative inquiry review will provide evidence that the six key charismatic leadership characteristics are currently systematically employed in multiple diverse occupational and research settings to improve followers' goals and responses. Aligning existing leadership strategies to complement the six main charismatic leadership characteristics over recommended occupational competencies finds that charismatic leadership is a parallel process of leadership and management for social workers and other occupational domains, particularly within …

Breaking Down Barriers: Improving Asian American Mental Health, Zhen Yang
Doctorate of Social Work (DSW) Capstones 2024-
Mental illness is a significant concern affecting millions of people in the United States every year. According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), one in five U.S. adults and one in six U.S. youth experience a mental health illness yearly. Shockingly, 50% of all lifetime mental illnesses begin by the age of 14, and 75% by the age of 24. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC, 2023), 37% of Asian American adults reported that their mental health status was "not good." Astonishingly, 73.1% of these individuals did not receive treatment, compared to 56.7% of …

The Effectiveness Of The Chinese Communist Party’S Guerrilla Warfare During The Second Sino Japanese War, 1937-1945, Paul Collins
The Effectiveness Of The Chinese Communist Party’S Guerrilla Warfare During The Second Sino Japanese War, 1937-1945, Paul Collins
Undergraduate Review
During the Second Sino-Japanese War, the Chinese Communist Party prioritized preserving widespread support while inflicting significant damage on Japanese forces despite facing formidable opposition, leading to the development of specific strategies to meet these goals. Ultimately, the Communists’ adoption of guerrilla warfare became the hallmark of their strategy, influencing the post-war perception of Communist success versus Nationalist failure. Extensive research has revealed that the Communists’ guerrilla warfare was overall highly successful, soundly developed, and instrumental in achieving China’s victory over Japan, due to strategies that had proven to have little recourse in combat.

Fisheries Research Report No. 346: West Coast Demersal Scalefish Resource Synopsis 2024, Emily A. Fisher, David Fairclough
Fisheries Research Reports
The West Coast Demersal Scalefish Resource (WCDSR) comprises over 100 species that inhabit inshore (20-250 m deep) and offshore ( > 250 m deep) waters of the West Coast Bioregion (WCB; north of Kalbarri to east of Augusta).
The WCB is predominantly a temperate oceanic zone with these waters influenced by the Leeuwin Current that transports warm, low-nutrient water southward along the western edge of the continental shelf.
To monitor and assess the WCDSR, indicator species have been selected using a risk-based approach that considers their inherent vulnerability to fishing, level of targeting and catch taken by fishers, and the amount …
Obstetric Fistulas In Sub-Saharan Africa, Katie Whitcomb
Obstetric Fistulas In Sub-Saharan Africa, Katie Whitcomb
Ballard Brief
An obstetric fistula is a hole in the vaginal canal, either to the bladder or the rectum. It is a childbirth complication caused by obstructed, prolonged labor. Sub-Saharan African mothers are particularly vulnerable to fistulas if they are poor, rural living, or young. Additionally, cultural barriers, distrust of Western health facilities, and birthing traditions play a role in the pervasiveness of obstetric fistulas in modernity. A hole in the bladder or rectum leads to loss of control over urination or defecation. However, there are secondary consequences, such as mental illness and social stigma, that cause just as much suffering as …

Trees And The Love Of God, David M. Belnap, Nalini M. Nadkarni
Trees And The Love Of God, David M. Belnap, Nalini M. Nadkarni
Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship
Trees play real and metaphorical roles in the beliefs and holy scriptures of many world religions, and believers and non-believers throughout the world are uplifted spiritually by trees. In the Book of Mormon, a tree with delicious, sweet fruit appeared in two visions and one parable. Respectively, the tree represents the love of God as seen through the life and sacrifice of Jesus Christ and symbolizes spiritual growth as one experimentally nourishes faith from a seed. Trees and fruit in the world around us can remind us of important lessons from these teachings and help keep us focused on the …
Late Summer Plankton Community Variation In Near Shore Environments, Aidan Jacobs-Walker
Late Summer Plankton Community Variation In Near Shore Environments, Aidan Jacobs-Walker
Copley Library Undergraduate Research Awards
Phytoplankton communities have profound impacts on ecosystem health and function. In the Southern California Bight, hydrographic conditions play a key role in determining the composition of phytoplankton communities. This study conducted hydrographic and plankton community analyses of the nearshore environment off Dana Point, California, during late September. Similar to other studies in the SCB during fall, we observed weakly stratified, oligotrophic waters dominated by dinoflagellates under 10 μm. However, the recorded plankton abundances onshore vs. offshore deviated from the “green ribbon” typical of the SCB, in which phytoplankton are much more abundant onshore than offshore. Additionally, while the onshore community …

Μαλακοί And ΆρσενοκοῖΤαι In 1 Corinthians 6:9-10: Reception History And Its Applicability To Modern Homosexuality, Taylor Patz
All Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This thesis is arguing that μαλακοί and ἀρσενοκοῖται in 1 Corinthians 6:9-10 should not have a place in the formation of modern Christian theological stances on homosexuality because neither μαλακοί nor ἀρσενοκοῖται conceptually align with modern homosexuality. Chapters one through four cover background context on Jewish, Greek, and Roman views of sexuality. This background information is to provide context, based on the literary evidence we have today, on what Paul could have conceptually intended by μαλακοί and ἀρσενοκοῖται. The second part to this thesis, chapters five through seven, look at the reception history of 1 Corinthians 6:9 from Latin to …

Doctor of Medical Science (DMSc)
Similar to dementia management, treatment of mild cognitive impairment includes both non-pharmacologic and pharmacologic options to help prevent progression of further cognitive decline and dementia. Pharmacologic treatment of reversible causes include discontinuation of medications causing cognitive side effects, treating sleep disturbances, treating depression , and correcting deficiencies in vitamin B12 or thyroid hormone.2 Another important step includes vascular risk factor modification with pharmacologic treatment of hypertension, which has been identified as an important risk factor of dementia. 3Non-pharmacologic interventions include various methods of cognitive rehabilitation (e.g., memory training and exercise). Exercise programs lasting 6 to 12 months have …

An Ex-Vivo Investigation Of The Effect Of Skin Conditioning With Formulation Vehicles On The Dermal Disposition Of Diphenhydramine Perfused Directly Into The Dermis, Nasim Rezvani Haghighi Shirazi
Selected Full-Text Dissertations 2020-
It is well known that the composition/excipients of a topical dermatological drug product (TDDP) affect the permeation of an active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) through the skin. While it is generally accepted that the vehicle mostly modulates the release of the API from the product, little is known whether the vehicle might also influence the kinetics of the API within the skin itself. In one attempt to answer this question, we developed an ex-vivo model using pig ear and a retrodialysis/microdialysis technique to deliver the API directly into dermis and measure the API dermal pharmacokinetics (dPK). We compared the dPK of …
