Empathy, Ethics, And Empowerment: Supervising The Transpersonal Therapist, John Elfers, Patty Hlava Jan 2024

Empathy, Ethics, And Empowerment: Supervising The Transpersonal Therapist, John Elfers, Patty Hlava

International Journal of Transpersonal Studies Advance Publication Archive

This grounded theory study addressed the question What model explains the essential qualities, skills, and competencies of an effective supervisory relationship for transpersonal therapists in training? It emerged out of a recognition that current training models for supervisors were not inclusive of competencies to address the needs of therapist trainees who are oriented toward a transpersonal approach to psychotherapy. The results of 22 interviews with trainees and supervisors surfaced a fundamental tension within the supervisory relationship in the distinction among the primary responsibility of the supervisor for ensuring client welfare, and encouraging supervisees to develop their personal therapeutic orientation and …

Rare And Undiagnosed Liver Diseases: New Insights From Genomic And Single Cell Transcriptomic Analyses, Chigoziri Konkwo

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

Chronic liver disease (CLD) is a major global health problem, leading to an estimatedtwo million annual deaths worldwide. Advances in next generation sequencing (NGS) technologies have revolutionized our ability to diagnose and investigate disease pathogenesis. Our research group has previously shown that genomic analysis is useful in the diagnosis of patients with unexplained CLD, providing a diagnostic yield of up to 30%. Moreover, this approach has revealed a newly described cause of non-cirrhotic portal hypertension and nodular regenerative hyperplasia due to GIMAP5 deficiency, which is recapitulated in a mouse model. Additionally, the growing use of single cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) …

Positive Responses Of Solanum Lycopersicum Growth To Additions Of Gibberellin In The Presence Of Wounding Stress, Tatum Curtin Jan 2024

Positive Responses Of Solanum Lycopersicum Growth To Additions Of Gibberellin In The Presence Of Wounding Stress, Tatum Curtin

Undergraduate Scholarship

Herbivory is a consistent and prevalent stressor that threatens plants. Gibberellin, a naturally occurring plant growth hormone, has been known to increase plant growth when under a physical stress such as herbivory. To investigate, we set up a two-factorial design with 60 Solanum lycopersicum plants and subjected 15 plants each to four treatment groups: reference/control, 65 mg gibberellin, wounding, and 65 mg gibberellin+wounding. We found that S. lycopersicum root-to-shoot ratio decreases with the addition of gibberellin under mechanical wounding stress. Additionally, chlorophyll fluorescence increases under any mechanical wounding, with and without gibberellin present. Our experiment allows us to conclude that …

Overexpression Of Wnt7a Enhances Radiosensitivity Of Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer Via The Wnt/Jnk Pathway, Loan Quynh Tran

VCU's Medical Journal Club: The Work of Future Health Professionals

Wnt7a serves an important role in slowing down the growth of non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC). However, little is known about the effect(s) of Wnt7a on the sensitivity of NSCLC to radiation. In the study, NSCLC cell proliferation and apoptosis in response to Wnt7a overexpression and/or radiation as one combination were determined by 3-(4,5-Dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyl-tertazolium bromide (MTT) assay and flow cytometry, respectively. The western blot technique was used to further examine the activation of Wnt/cJun N-terminal kinase (JNK) and Wnt/b-catenin signaling pathways in NSCLC cell lines H1650 and A549.

The results indicate that the overexpression of Wnt7a, in combination with radiation inhibits …

An Open Mystery: Reflections On The Metaphysical Status Of The Participatory Approach, Jorge N. Ferrer Jan 2024

An Open Mystery: Reflections On The Metaphysical Status Of The Participatory Approach, Jorge N. Ferrer

International Journal of Transpersonal Studies Advance Publication Archive

This paper provides an assessment and clarification of the metaphysical status of the participatory approach to transpersonal and spiritual phenomena (Ferrer, 2002, 2017a). To that end, I first respond to several criticisms of the approach issued by scholars in recent years; for instance, that it hides a perennialist metaphysics (e.g., Abramson, 2015) or that it is metaphysically vague (e.g., Taylor, 2021). After reviewing these critical discussions, I describe the open and minimalist nature of the participatory metaphysics, arguing that such features cultivate a fertile soil for transpersonal scholarship, human flourishing, and interreligious relations. Applying a biomimetic approach, I argue that …

Supporting Emotional Behavior Disorder Students In The Mainstream Classroom, Angela R. Cope Jan 2024

Supporting Emotional Behavior Disorder Students In The Mainstream Classroom, Angela R. Cope

All Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Students with Emotional Behavioral Disorder (EBD) face extreme barriers within the school system as well as in their adult life. Teachers across the country are seeing an increase in student behavior within the classroom and are feeling a lack of support and training to better support EBD students. Behaviors are impacting the teacher’s ability to teach and the ability of students to learn. Research suggests that general education teachers hold mixed attitudes regarding the inclusion and the education of students with disabilities; some feel they are unprepared to teach students with disabilities (Barton-Arwood et al., 2016). Our education system must …

Microstructure-Based Modeling Of Primary Cilia Mechanics, Nima Mostafazadeh, Andrew Resnick, Y.-N. Young, Zhangli Peng Jan 2024

Microstructure-Based Modeling Of Primary Cilia Mechanics, Nima Mostafazadeh, Andrew Resnick, Y.-N. Young, Zhangli Peng

Physics Faculty Publications

A primary cilium, made of nine microtubule doublets enclosed in a cilium membrane, is a mechanosensing organelle that bends under an external mechanical load and sends an intracellular signal through transmembrane proteins activated by cilium bending. The nine microtubule doublets are the main load-bearing structural component, while the transmembrane proteins on the cilium membrane are the main sensing component. No distinction was made between these two components in all existing models, where the stress calculated from the structural component (nine microtubule doublets) was used to explain the sensing location, which may be totally misleading. For the first time, we developed …

Amended Expert Disclosure Report: Navahine V. Dept. Of Transportation, State Of Hawai’I, Catherine Smith

Scholarly Articles

From a historical and sociological legal perspective, children in America, including in Hawai'i, require extraordinary legal protection from the harm of climate change and the government actions causing them harm. Hawai'i has a long history and tradition of leading the way on broadening rights and protections under state law, particularly for children. The principles of intergenerational justice and equity at the heart of the public trust doctrine in Hawai'i similarly require that courts accord special attention and protection for children.

On June 20, 2024, the youth-powered Navahine case settled, resulting in the first constitutional climate settlement of its kind in …

Pleistocene Nutrient And Sediment Burial In The Agulhas Current: Links To Regional And Global Climate Variability, Paige Havener Jan 2024

Pleistocene Nutrient And Sediment Burial In The Agulhas Current: Links To Regional And Global Climate Variability, Paige Havener

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The Agulhas Current is one of the strongest currents in the southern hemisphere and is responsible for the transport of waters along the southeastern coast of Africa. The sediment load of the Agulhas Current and its interactions with other water masses in the region are essential to primary productivity along Africas southern coast. Despite this importance, there are still many discrepancies in our understanding of how sediment burial and nutrient variability have been impacted by regional and global changes in climate. The focus of this research is to explore the connections between climate and elemental burial from the Pleistocene through …

Developing A Pbpk Model For Intranasal Naloxone And Opioid Displacement From Brain Receptors, Jasmin Akther Hossain

Selected Full-Text Dissertations 2020-

The therapeutic and nontherapeutic use of potent opioid agonists has increased dramatically over the past 20 years, with overdose trends following suit. Currently, naloxone is the primary drug used for treating emergency rescue from an opioid overdose. Naloxone works by displacing opioid agonists that are bound to receptors such as the μ-opioid receptor (MOR) in the brain, which are thought to be the sites of action responsible for symptoms due to overdosing, such as respiratory depression.

Intranasal (IN) administration of naloxone is an excellent alternative to the invasiveness of injections and poorly bioavailable oral formulation. However, the exact mechanism of …

This study seeks to add to the limited literature of HAB within adult, forensic populations. A total of 82 participants were recruited from an alternative-to-incarceration program and completed a survey …

The Effects Of Opioids And How They Affected The American Healthcare System, Harold Osborne Jan 2024

The Effects Of Opioids And How They Affected The American Healthcare System, Harold Osborne

Integrated Studies

The opioid pandemic swept through the United States in the early 2000’s, causing many to fight a battle with addiction. A drug that has been dated back to the 1860s found a new life where it was thought to give patients better access to pain management. This would prove true, but the consequences that would come with this were far graver than the benefits. Between 1999 and 2010 the amount of opioid related deaths more than doubled from 2.9 deaths per 100,000 people to 6.8 deaths per 100,000 people. Since 1999 more than six hundred thousand people have lost their …

Is Long-Term Survival Higher In Patients Who Receive Propofol-Based Total Intravenous Anesthesia During Colorectal Cancer Surgery Compared To Volatile Anesthesia, Shad Anthony Mitchell

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

The study reviewed several retrospective cohort studies that examined the impact of propofol-based total intravenous anesthesia (TIVA) versus volatile anesthesia (VA) on the long-term survival of colorectal cancer (CRC) surgery patients. Eight studies found no significant difference in mortality between the two anesthesia types, while three studies indicated a significant decrease in all-cause mortality favoring propofol TIVA. The studies had varying follow-up periods, with some extending to five years. Notably, two studies controlled the type of volatile anesthetic used, specifically sevoflurane and desflurane. The findings suggest a potential survival advantage for propofol TIVA, warranting further investigation.

The Automated Fourth Amendment, Maneka Sinha Jan 2024

The Automated Fourth Amendment, Maneka Sinha

Faculty Scholarship

Courts routinely defer to police officer judgments in reasonable suspicion and probable cause determinations. Increasingly, though, police officers outsource these threshold judgments to new forms of technology that purport to predict and detect crime and identify those responsible. These policing technologies automate core police determinations about whether crime is occurring and who is responsible. Criminal procedure doctrine has failed to insist on some level of scrutiny of—or skepticism about—the reliability of this technology. Through an original study analyzing numerous state and federal court opinions, this Article exposes the implications of law enforcement’s reliance on these practices given the weighty interests …

The Long-Term Effects Of Prescribed Fire On Floral Abundance And Bumble Bee Abundance In Mixed-Oak Forests Of Southeastern Ohio, Moses Shafer

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Pollinators are declining due to climate change and habitat loss driven by agriculture and urbanization. In fire-adapted ecosystems, fire promotes the biodiversity of plants by creating space, reducing competition, and increasing light and nutrient availability. However, little is known regarding the effects of fire on floral abundance of plants used by Bombus. The overall goal of this project was to assess the long-term effects of fire on floral abundance and Bombus abundance. Our specific questions were: (1) How does fire frequency influence floral abundance?, (2) How does fire frequency influence floral abundance of species specifically utilized by bumble bees?, …

Textile Crossroads: Exploring European Clothing, Identity, and Culture across Millennia

While uneven in their scope and reach, studies of dress and dress complements (fibulae, belt buckles, buttons, etc.) have a significant tradition within the broader study of the pre- and protohistory of Mediterranean Europe. Many of these studies, however, have had a strong focus on the typology of the dress complements and ornaments themselves, either as chronological indicators, ethnic markers, or both. In more recent years, however, a shift in research agendas has ushered in the introduction of new perspectives and new ways of thinking about dress and bodily adornment.

This contribution explores one such perspective in particular — namely, …
