Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) encompasses a diverse group of cancers that originate in the blood-forming tissues of the bone marrow [1]. Aside from the PML-RARA+ subtype, AML carries a 5-year survival rate of 28% for patients 20+ years of age. AML is the most common cancer of the hematopoietic system and is slightly more common in biological males; the average age at diagnosis is 68 years. Standard frontline treatment for AML is a two-phase regimen of intensive chemotherapy (CTx) employing daunorubicin and cytarabine; etoposide may also be added in select regimens. Despite 60-70% of patients achieving complete remission (CR), …

Challenging structural violence is a major project of our time. The massive Black Lives Matter (BLM) uprisings of Summer 2020 brought greater awareness of the systemic racism of universities and a commitment to challenge it. A Marxist-humanist lens recognizes racism as foundational to the racial-colonial capitalist patriarchy and the university as deeply implicated in the development and maintenance of these structures. While all these interlocking oppressions must be eradicated, in the US, racism has historically galvanized more people to action. For this we need a populace with critical literacy to connect their daily oppressions to structural forces. Critical literacy also …

This paper explores the abstract dyad of universality and uniqueness. It notes that the two might be complementary and even synergistic, or that they might be alternatives that oppose one another. It also explores how the unique might be an emergent from a primal universality, as well as how the universal might be an emergent from a primal uniqueness. Finally, it offers an interpretation of this dyad in which the universal and the unique are equivalent transforms of one another and thus two sides of the same coin.
Keywords: Universality, uniqueness, general and particular, similarity and difference, fundamental dyad, dualism

Low-abundance members of microbial communities are difficult to study in their native habitats, including Escherichia coli, a minor but common inhabitant of the gastrointestinal tract, and key opportunistic pathogen of the urinary tract. While multi-omic analyses have detailed interactions between uropathogenic Escherichia coli (UPEC) and the bladder mediating urinary tract infection (UTI), little is known about UPEC in its pre-infection reservoir, the gastrointestinal tract, partly due to its low relative abundance (<1%). To sensitively explore the genomes and transcriptomes of diverse gut E. coli, we develop E. coli PanSelect, which uses probes designed to specifically capture E. coli's broad pangenome. We demonstrate its ability to enrich diverse E. coli by orders of magnitude, in a mock community and in human stool from a study investigating recurrent UTI (rUTI). Comparisons of transcriptomes between gut E. coli of women with and without history of rUTI suggest rUTI gut E. coli are responding to increased oxygen and nitrate, suggestive of mucosal inflammation, which may have implications for recurrent disease. E. coli PanSelect is well suited for investigations of in vivo E. coli biology in other low-abundance environments, and the framework described here has broad applicability to other diverse, low-abundance organisms.

Fish communities on artificial reefs have rarely been monitored over long periods to evaluate success of reef deployment. Here, we used roving diver surveys to assess changes in fish assemblages on a large, reefed vessel during 2008–2017. Multivariate analyses revealed a dynamic community that stabilized after 5 years. Species richness increased and species dominance decreased during 2008–2017. The fish community shifted toward reef-associated species such as hogfish and pufferfish. Species composition shifted, but trophic structure was relatively stable, which suggested that functional groups may not reflect larger community shifts. Our results indicate that fish communities on artificial reefs are temporally …

BACKGROUND: Although some randomized trials have reported beneficial effects of protein intake on cardiometabolic risk factors, evidence from prospective studies have not supported a strong link between protein intake and cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk. It is also unclear whether diversity in protein intake plays a role in CVD risk.
OBJECTIVE: We investigated prospective associations of (1) protein intake, overall and by food source and (2) diversity of protein sources with risk of CVD, coronary heart disease (CHD), and stroke.
METHODS: In a multi-ethnic cohort of 5879 U.S. adults (45-84 years), who were free of CVD at baseline, protein intake was …

Caring for patients with hard-to-heal (chronic) wounds requires a multifaceted approach that addresses their diverse needs, which can contribute to the complexity of care. Wound care providers must have a comprehensive understanding of the patient's comorbid conditions and psychosocial issues to provide personalised and effective treatment. Key quality indicators for effective wound care involves not only selecting appropriate local wound care products, such as foam dressings, but also addressing individual patient experiences of wound-related pain, odour, itch, excessive wound drainage, and self-care needs. The purpose of this review is to inculcate the wound care practice community, research scientists and healthcare …

Determining The Long-Term Effectiveness Of Seeding Post-Dam Removal In The Elwha River, Wa, Through Soil Seed Bank Analysis, Makenna Tabino, Rebecca Brown
2024 Symposium
Following the historic dam removal along the Elwha River in Olympic National Park, we are evaluating the impact of seeding in the former Lake Mills reservoir by examining the soil seed bank composition. The Elwha River had the largest dam removal project in history, and the second largest ecological restoration project in National Parks Service history. Active restoration (seeding and planting) took place in terraces and valley walls, the two dominant landform types found in the former reservoir. While the plant community in the former dam reservoirs is well documented, the soil seed bank remains unexplored.
My objective is to …

Accurately estimating the risk of sensitive populations subjected to toxicant disturbances is central to our ability to protect ecosystem services. While the gold standard for assessing risk historically involves static measures such as the LD50 or LC50, more sophisticated approaches have been developed in an attempt to capture more nuanced outcomes. In the 1980s the International Organization for Biological Control (IOBC) developed a tiered approach to determine the compatibility of pesticides and natural enemies in the context of integrated pest management (IPM). We analyzed the IOBC approach using stage-based matrix models to project population outcomes for four parasitoid species, Diaeretiella …

Bycatch remains a major challenge in commercial fisheries, with large numbers of threatened species impacted by incidental capture. One of the most vulnerable bycatch groups in global tuna fisheries are the manta and devil rays (mobulids), which have experienced significant population declines in response to both targeted and incidental capture. The retention of mobulids has been banned by many countries and Regional Fisheries Management Organizations (RFMOs), but major knowledge gaps exist in the group's survival rates following release after incidental capture. Mobulids are accidentally captured in purse seine fisheries, and in recent years, many RFMOs have mandated handling and release …

Exotic woodboring insects, including some ambrosia beetles (Coleoptera: Curculionidae, Scolytinae, and Platypodidae), are threatening native forests worldwide. Longleaf pine (Pinus palustris Mill.) forest is an endangered habitat in the southeastern United States. One of the most important actions necessary for its conservation is prescribed fire, which maintains its savanna structure. However, prescribed fire is a forest disturbance, possibly creating new niches for colonization by exotic insects. The interaction between prescribed fire and exotic ambrosia species is understudied, especially in highly fire-dependent ecosystems. We carried out a two-year experiment in mixed longleaf pine forests in Alabama, USA. We compared ambrosia beetle …

Confocal Raman Spectroscopy is recognised as a potent tool for molecular characterisation of biological specimens. There is a growing demand for In Vitro Permeation Tests (IVPT) in the pharmaceutical and cosmetic areas, increasingly conducted using Reconstructed Human Epidermis (RHE) skin models. In this study, chemical fixation of RHE in 10% Neutral Buffered Formalin for 24 hours has been examined for storing RHE samples at 4°C for up to 21 days. Confocal Raman Spectroscopy, combined with Principal Components Analysis, revealed the molecular-level effects of fixation, notably in protein and lipid conformation within the stratum corneum and viable epidermis. IVPT by means …

Social stress is the most significant source of chronic stress in humans and is commonly associated with health impairment. Individual differences in the behavioral coping responses to stress have been proposed to mediate the negative effects of stress on physical, behavioral and mental health. Animal models, particularly mice, offer valuable insights into the physiological and neurobiological correlates of behavioral coping strategies in response to chronic social stress. Here we aim to identify differences and similarities among stress protocols in mice, with particular attention to how neuroendocrine and/or behavioral responses vary according to different coping strategies, while highlighting the need for …

Rowan-Virtua School of Osteopathic Medicine Departmental Research
Psychotic disorders following traumatic brain injury (TBI) are a significant concern in psychiatry, with chronic sequelae often overlooked. The pathophysiology of post-TBI psychosis involves neuroplasticity and neuronal remodeling, potentially exacerbating vulnerabilities to chronic psychotic disorders. Differentiating post-TBI psychosis from primary schizophrenia and other psychotic conditions is crucial for appropriate treatment. This case report discusses a 63-year-old male with a history of TBI from a gunshot wound sustained in adolescence, who later developed schizophrenia. The report explores the patient's psychiatric symptoms, cognitive dysfunction, personality changes, and imaging findings. The report examined the complex relationship between TBI and psychotic symptoms, considering genetic, …

Master's Theses
The Microphysiological Systems Laboratory aims to develop colorectal cancer tumor models under a hypoxic environment to assess model response to pharmaceutical compounds in vitro. To perform relevant studies, researchers have attempted to use different hypoxic inducing strategies such as a nitrogen pod and hypoxic incubator to recreate in vivo physiological responses to hypoxia. However, studies would be interrupted due to incubator functionality failure. To ensure successful and physiologically relevant studies, I improved and verified the robustness and reliability of a hypoxic incubator previously designed and manufactured in the lab. Through the testing and iterating design processes, I engineered and implemented …

Fletcher's seminal 1993 paper explores the dynamics of pressure-controlled valves critical in sound production for woodwind and brass instruments and animal vocalizations.1 The study examines four simple valve configurations, determined by the effect of overpressures on valve openings. It identifies conditions under which these valves can sustain self-sustained oscillations, particularly when the ducts connected to the valves are shorter than a quarter of the wavelength at the valve's resonant frequency. The research focuses on the initiation of small amplitude oscillations, setting the stage for understanding larger amplitude nonlinear oscillations.

Madagascar is acclaimed for its floral and faunal endemism and biodiversity. Among the island nation's most emblematic fauna are its native mammalian carnivores; they are members of the threatened and endemic Eupleridae family. The Corridor of Marojejy, Anjanaharibe-Sud Special Reserve, Tsaratanana (COMATSA) is a newly protected corridor system that faces deforestation and lacks detailed assessments of its native carnivore community. We deployed 44 motion-activated trail cameras to identify which terrestrial carnivores are found within the rainforest corridor landscape of COMATSA-Sud and Marojejy National Park, and to examine carnivore occupancy, relative activity and the impacts of habitat edge. Our sampling array …
