Not Just Any Tree: The Influence Of Leaf Characteristics On The Nest Site Selection Ofasian Weaver Ants, Amira Aqilah Muhammad, Noorhidayah Mamat, Kien-Thai Yong, Nurul Ashikin Abdullah
Turkish Journal of Zoology
The connection between plant species and nest site preference for the Asian weaver ant Oecophylla smaragdina remainspoorly understood despite their common occurrence in the urban areas of tropical regions. We predicted that plant species with specificleaf characteristics influence the nesting preference of Asian weaver ants, given that plant foliage is the main component of their neststructure. We studied the leaf characteristics of the tree species in which their nests were detected, including leaf shape, leaf apex shape, and leaf arrangement. Of the 206 total trees among the 20 tree species sampled, 185 trees from 18 tree species had at least one …

Waveform detection has been an area of continuous investigation for many years. One important waveform in sleep stage 2 is the k-complex. Numerous researchers have created various strategies for auto-k-complex detection; some of these strategies state that the automated detection techniques are adequate. Because of its analytically relevant resolution, the Electroencephalogram (EEG) is a commonly utilized technique to analyze the k-complexes in order to understand the nervous system activity of the brain. Several researchers have classified waveforms using EEGs in a variety of ways. It appears that the majority of the waveform detection had limitations. The …

Girls, Guns, And Zombies: Five Dimensions Of Teaching And Learning In The Walking Dead, Anthony Neely
Dialogue: The Interdisciplinary Journal of Popular Culture and Pedagogy
Rooted in sociocultural theory, this article utilizes a conceptual framework derived from Alexander, Schallert, and Reynolds’ four topographical dimensions of learning: who of learning, what of learning, where of learning, and when of learning. Situated learning (Lave and Wenger) is presented as a fifth dimension to address how learning occurs in communities of practice absent of formal schooling. Content analysis (Elo and Kyngass) is used to analyze a teaching and learning event from an episode of The Walking Dead based on the five topographical dimensions of learning listed above. Findings provide insights for pedagogical application for …

The Plasma Proteome Reveals Markers Of Recent And Repeated Stress In Free-Ranging Seals, Jessica G. Avalos, Cory D. Champagne, Dan E. Crocker, Jane I. Khudyakov
Pacific Faculty Work
Animals in nature potentially experience multiple stressors, and those of anthropogenic origin are likely to be repeated or chronic. However, stress hormone levels are highly context-dependent and are not consistent predictors of chronic stress in wildlife. Profiling the downstream consequences of repeated stress responses, such as changes in metabolism or gene expression, may be more informative for predicting their individual-level health consequences and population-level impacts, which are key objectives for wildlife conservation. We previously found that in free-ranging juvenile elephant seals, the blubber transcriptome and proteome, but not cortisol levels, could distinguish between responses to single versus repeated stress axis …

In 2022, prices for both brand-name and generic drugs in the U.S. were nearly three times as high as prices in comparably industrialized nations, with the cost of insulin products in particular being nearly ten times as high. As a result, 3 out of 10 American adults cannot afford to take their medication as prescribed. Furthermore, in 2024 the U.S. experienced its worst drug shortage in over a decade, with more than 300 drugs in short supply. Generic drugs are particularly vulnerable to shortage, as manufacturers have poor economic incentives to produce drugs with slim profit margins. While the Biden …

The textbook, ‘Foundations of the Mind, Brain, and Behavioral Relationships’ (Moini et al., Citation2023), is one of the newest textbooks in neuroscience to arrive. The market for textbooks in the field of neuroscience is competitive among several excellent comparators, but critical market gaps still remain to be filled, notably the area of clinical neuroscience that is both advanced in content but accessible to students. One of the reasons that this gap has existed in the field is precisely because it can be a very difficult a mark to hit: how does one present neurobiological content that is …

Recurrent high-grade intracranial malignancies have a grim prognosis and uniform management guidelines are lacking. Re-irradiation is underused due to concerns about irreversible side effects. Pulsed-reduced dose rate radiotherapy (PRDR) aims to reduce toxicity while improving tumor control by exploiting dose-rate effects. We share our initial experience with temporally modulated pulsed proton re-irradiation (TMPPR), focusing on workflow, safety, feasibility, and outcomes for the first patient cohort. TMPPR was administered to patients with recurrent or progressive central nervous system malignancies using intensity modulated proton therapy with three fields. Patient and treatment data were collected, responses categorized using RANO assessment, and toxicities graded …

BACKGROUND: Lifestyle plays an important role in shaping the gut microbiome. However, its contributions to the oral microbiome remain less clear, due to the confounding effects of geography and methodology in investigations of populations studied to date. Furthermore, while the oral microbiome seems to differ between foraging and industrialized populations, we lack insight into whether transitions to and away from agrarian lifestyles shape the oral microbiota. Given the growing interest in so-called "vanishing microbiomes" potentially being a risk factor for increased disease prevalence in industrialized populations, it is important that we distinguish lifestyle from geography in the study of microbiomes …

Strategies To Reduce Employee Turnover In The Insurance Industry In Jamaica, Kenneth Barrington Roberts
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
High employee turnover in insurance agencies can have a detrimental effect on overall team performance and significantly impact on the organization's financial health. To address the problem, insurance managers must understand effective strategies to improve employee retention. Grounded in Herzberg’s two-factor theory, the purpose of this qualitative pragmatic inquiry was to explore strategies insurance managers use to reduce their employee turnover rate. The participants were three insurance managers of the Jamaican insurance industry. Data were collected using semistructured virtual interviews and a review of public documents related to turnover data. Through thematic analysis, three themes emerged: a) supportive leadership for …

Few aerobic hyperthermophilic microorganisms degrade polysaccharides. Here, we describe the genome-enabled enrichment and optical tweezer-based isolation of an aerobic polysaccharide-degrading hyperthermophile, Fervidibacter sacchari, previously ascribed to candidate phylum Fervidibacteria. F. sacchari uses polysaccharides and monosaccharides for growth at 65–87.5 °C and expresses 191 carbohydrate-active enzymes (CAZymes) according to RNA-Seq and proteomics, including 31 with unusual glycoside hydrolase domains (GH109, GH177, GH179). Fluorescence in-situ hybridization and nanoscale secondary ion mass spectrometry confirmed rapid assimilation of 13C-starch in spring sediments. Purified GHs were optimally active at 80–100 °C on ten different polysaccharides. Finally, we propose reassigning Fervidibacteria as a class …

Modern calcifying marine organisms face numerous environmental stressors, including overfishing, deoxygenation, increasing ocean temperatures, and ocean acidification (OA). Coastal marine settings are predicted to become warmer and more acidic in coming decades, heightening the risks of extreme events such as marine heat waves. Given these threats, it is important to understand the vulnerabilities of marine organisms that construct their shells from calcium carbonate, which are particularly susceptible to warming and decreasing pH levels. To investigate the response of four commercially relevant bivalve species to OA and differing temperatures, juvenile Mercenaria mercenaria (hard shell clams), juvenile Mya arenaria (soft shell clams), …
