Assessing Fish Species Richness Using Edna And Seine Nets In A Restored Estuary In Tampa Bay, Florida, Us, Alex Seigel
Assessing Fish Species Richness Using Edna And Seine Nets In A Restored Estuary In Tampa Bay, Florida, Us, Alex Seigel
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Coastal estuarine systems associated with the Tampa Bay region along the Gulf of Mexico, Florida, US, are critical to the region’s fishing industry, which contributes significantly to Florida’s economy. Restoring estuaries along the Gulf Coast of Florida is an investment in Florida’s environmental health and economic stability. Estuaries serve as nurseries for many marine species, including commercially important organisms like finfish. Restoring these areas can enhance fish stocks and, by extension, boost the economic returns from commercial and recreational fishing. In this study, differences in fish species richness were compared among a seven-month period in 2022, seine nets (once in …
Ecological Epidemiology Of The Fungal Pathogen Ophidiomyces Ophiodiicola In Southeastern U.S. Snake Populations: Distribution, Drivers, And Anthropogenic Risk Factors, Shivam Shukla
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Studying wildlife diseases is an important conservation measure, as many pathogens are a critical threat to biodiversity worldwide. Ophidiomycosis is an emerging infectious disease caused by the invasive fungal pathogen Ophidiomyces ophiodiicola that affects a wide variety of snake species, often causing mortality. There has been limited surveillance for ophidiomycosis in the southeastern United States’ (US) snake populations and research into the effects of anthropogenic disturbance on disease spread is also lacking. Thus, this project aimed to quantify the distribution and drivers (taxonomic, anthropogenic, and morphological) of ophidiomycosis in Florida, Louisiana, and Mississippi’s free ranging snakes as well as study …

Lgformer: Informer-Based Personalized Modeling For Blood Glucose Prediction, Xue Yuewei, Shaopeng Guan, Jia Wanhai
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Effective diabetes management relies on precise prediction of blood glucose levels to minimize complications. However, the patterns and fluctuations in blood glucose vary significantly among patients, posing a challenge for existing prediction methods. Many current approaches fail to accommodate these individual differences, leading to less reliable predictions. In response to this challenge, we present LGformer, a novel prediction model based on the Informer architecture, designed to enhance both flexibility and accuracy. LGformer improves upon Informer by integrating LSTM and GRU layers into its probSparse Self-attention mechanism, allowing for personalized processing of blood glucose data tailored to each patient's unique profile. …

A Circular Engineered Sortase For Interrogating Histone H3 In Chromatin, Samuel D Whedon, Emily Zahn, Benjamin A Garcia, Et Al.
2020-Current year OA Pubs
Reversible modification of the histone H3 N-terminal tail is critical in regulating chromatin structure, gene expression, and cell states, while its dysregulation contributes to disease pathogenesis. Understanding the crosstalk between H3 tail modifications in nucleosomes constitutes a central challenge in epigenetics. Here we describe an engineered sortase transpeptidase, cW11, that displays highly favorable properties for introducing scarless H3 tails onto nucleosomes. This approach significantly accelerates the production of both symmetrically and asymmetrically modified nucleosomes. We demonstrate the utility of asymmetrically modified nucleosomes produced in this way in dissecting the impact of multiple modifications on eraser enzyme processing and molecular recognition …
Exploring The Curriculum Potential Of The Welsh Word Cynefin By Examining Its New Materialist And Contemplative Pedagogical Resonances, Dylan Adams
Journal of Contemplative and Holistic Education
Cynefin is a key word in the new curriculum for Wales. Yet it is a word that is difficult to define. It has no direct English translation and originates from Welsh hill farming where it was used by farmers to describe how sheep would form a mysterious attachment to different parts of common land. Subsequently, it has come to be associated with a person’s relationship to a place, where they feel at home. This article examines how the concept of cynefin potentially resonates with posthumanist and contemplative pedagogical perspectives. In doing so, it aims to answer the question, “how could …

Intraspecific Variation Of Thermal Tolerance Along Elevational Gradients: The Case Of A Widespread Diving Beetle (Coleoptera: Dytiscidae), Susana Pallares, Jose Antonio Carbonell, Felix Picazo, David T Bilton, Andres Millan, Pedro Abellan
More Faculty of Science and Engineering Research
Species distributed across wide elevational gradients are likely to experience local thermal adaptation and exhibit high thermal plasticity, as these gradients are characterised by steep environmental changes over short geographic distances (i.e., strong selection differentials). The prevalence of adaptive intraspecific variation in thermal tolerance with elevation remains unclear, however, particularly in freshwater taxa. We explored variation in upper and lower thermal limits and acclimation capacity among Iberian populations of adults of the widespread water beetle Agabus bipustulatus (Dytiscidae) across a 2000 m elevational gradient, from lowland to alpine areas. Since mean and extreme temperatures decline with elevation, we predicted that …

BACKGROUND: While high-frequency oscillations (HFOs) and their stereotyped clusters (sHFOs) have emerged as potential neuro-biomarkers for the rapid localization of the seizure onset zone (SOZ) in epilepsy, their clinical application is hindered by the challenge of automated elimination of pseudo-HFOs originating from artifacts in heavily corrupted intraoperative neural recordings. This limitation has led to a reliance on semi-automated detectors, coupled with manual visual artifact rejection, impeding the translation of findings into clinical practice.
METHODS: In response, we have developed a computational framework that integrates sparse signal processing and ensemble learning to automatically detect genuine HFOs of intracranial EEG data. This …

BACKGROUND: Prolonged exposure to hyperoxia can lead to hyperoxic acute lung injury (HALI) in preterm neonates. Vitamin D (VitD) stimulates lung maturation and acts as an anti-inflammatory agent. Our objective was to determine if VitD provides a dose-dependent protective effect against HALI by reducing inflammatory cytokine expression and improving alveolarization and lung function in neonatal mice.
METHODS: C57BL/6 mouse neonates were randomized and placed in room air or hyperoxic (85% O
RESULTS: Neonatal mice treated with VitD in hyperoxic conditions had improved weight gain, reduced pulmonary edema and increased alveolar surface area compared to untreated pups in hyperoxia. No significant …

The pandemic refocused interest on the burden of depression across the lifespan; the increased efforts to prevent and treat depression are now a priority of health care systems, insurers, patient advocates, digital therapeutic engineers, telemedicine platforms, and community health agencies. However, the challenges of treating depression to remission in adult patients who do not respond to first, second, or third levels of oral pharmacotherapy remain. The increased prevalence of these conditions is at odds with the shrinking psychiatric workforce. Since addressing difficult to treat depression is situated in a rapidly evolving treatment landscape, The University of Arizona College of Medicine-Tucson …

Study On The Seasonal Endobacterial Profile Of Avicennia Officinalis, Focusing On Core Bacterial Consortia Within Mangrove Pneumatophores, Devi R R, Vinod Prabhakar
Karbala International Journal of Modern Science
Microhabitats are smaller pockets of ecosystems with unique conditions and they serve as major contributors of species richness. Mangrove plants offer a diverse array of such microhabitats (rhizosphere, phyllosphere, endosphereetc), and the inhabitant bacteria benefit the host by providing better salinity tolerance, faster and better nutrient mobilization, protection from phytopathogens and assistance in seed germination. Identification of such beneficial bacteria, their growth requirementsandmetabolism, willhave direct application in the field of agriculture and ecosystem restoration. Hence in this study, effort has been made to elucidate the seasonal numerical and compositional profile of pneumatophore bacterial consortia of Avicennia officinalis, from the mangrove …

Rethinking Human-Autonomy Teamwork In The Context Of Design And Robotic Fabrication, Iremnur Tokac Celikyay, Caja Thimm, Sigrid Brell-Cokcan
Human-Machine Communication
The integration of autonomous agents in design is challenging due to its unstructured nature. The increasing focus on human-robot interaction (HRI) is driven by its potential to address this issue, enabling human-robot teams to effectively manage creative design tasks. This paper aims to identify interactive processes among the agencies of humans, robots, and materials. We explore how HRI can shift robotic fabrication from a linear deterministic process to an iterative co-creation one. Through reflective analysis of robotic fabrication studies, we illustrated how interaction interfaces can distribute agency among humans, robots, and materials while negotiating the design intent with material and …

The nested doll structure of the various notes, commentary, drafts, and ancillary texts published alongside the main text of the "Athrabeth Finrod ah Andreth" demonstrate both the depth (and challenges) of Christopher Tolkien's 'History of Middle-earth' collection, especially as they connect with the "Tale of Adanel."
Giorgio Agamben's Analysis Of The Mechanism Of Exclusion Or The Logic Of Sovereign Power, Georges De Schrijver
Giorgio Agamben's Analysis Of The Mechanism Of Exclusion Or The Logic Of Sovereign Power, Georges De Schrijver
Budhi: A Journal of Ideas and Culture
In Homo sacer: Sovereign Power and Bare Life, Giorgio Agamben extends Michel Foucault’s notion of biopolitics to include life, stripped bare, that is placed completely at the mercy of the powers that be. For him, the biopolitical paradigm is no longer the asylum but the concentration camp. Agamben drew the inspiration for this shift from Walter Benjamin, who decades ago had observed that the state of exception favored by the Nazi jurist Carl Schmitt had become the rule. Certain strata of the population, in this case the Jewish citizens in Germany, were abandoned by the law while continuing to fall …

Philosophy And Transformative Learning: Lessons In Natural Resource Management From Cordillera Communities, Julius D. Mendoza
Budhi: A Journal of Ideas and Culture
In this paper, the objects of philosophical reflection are the important lessons learned from a participatory action research program conducted by the Cordillera Studies Center of UP Baguio in Sagada, Mountain Province, in Northern Luzon, Philippines, which ran from March 1997 to February 2001. This research program used the Community Based Natural Resource Management (CBNRM) approach. Concepts of philosophy are made to re-describe “second order” concepts of theory, as well as “first order” concepts of community-based natural resource management research, planning, testing, implementation, and monitoring. Concepts used in the context of field work are given philosophical re-descriptions in the form …

This review explores the sources, entry pathways, and risk factors for MPs and NPs in beverages, emphasizing their toxicological profiles and harmful effects on human health and the environment. Methods for detecting MPs and NPs in beverages are discussed, highlighting the need for standardized testing protocols. Furthermore, future solution strategies, challenges, and preventive measures for mitigating MP and NP contamination in beverages are proposed, including advanced filtration systems, the development of alternative …
Queering The Relationship Between Research, Researcher And Research Participant: Procedural Ethics, Relational Ethics, And Inverted Hierarchies, Val Meneau
The Qualitative Report
Ethics committees (ECs) typically base their decisions on established assumptions about the impact of the research process, the researcher and the participant on each other, which my doctoral research project failed to meet. This paper discusses the challenging clash between my experiences as a queer scholar doing fieldwork and the expectations of my EC. I argue that queer feminist ethnography complicates the established assumptions concerning the impact of the research process, researcher, and participant on each other. In doing so, I argue that we need models of this relationship that allow us to capture its complexity, for example in the …

Conformational Flexibility Of The C-Terminal Region Influences Distal Active Site Residues Across The Tautomerase Superfamily, Christopher Argueta, Andrew Parkins, Georgios Pantouris
Pacific Faculty Work
Consisting of more than 11,000 members distributed over five families, the tautomerase superfamily (TSF) is a large collection of proteins with diverse biological functions. While much attention has been given to individual TSF enzymes, a majority remain structurally and functionally uncharacterized. Given its large size, studying a representative member of each family offers a viable approach for extracting mechanistic insights applicable to the entire superfamily. In this study, cis-3-chloroacrylic acid dehalogenase (cis-CaaD), 5-carboxymethyl-2-hydroxymuconate isomerase (CHMI), malonate semialdehyde decarboxylase (MSAD), and 4-oxalocrotonate tautomerase (4-OT) were referenced against the well-studied macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF) and D-dopachrome tautomerase (D-DT) using triplicate 1 …

Woody plant encroachment and row-crop agricultural land conversion are existential threats to species that rely on grassland ecosystems. The American Burying Beetle (Nicrophorus americanus) is a threatened species whose largest remnant populations are predominantly located in grassland ecoregions comprised of privately-owned ranching lands. Here, we seek to determine functional scaling patterns and population trends of the American Burying Beetle in the face of conservation threats and grassland restoration. We used 13 years (2007–2019) of American Burying Beetle abundance data collected from permanent sampling locations across the Loess Canyons ecoregion (Nebraska, USA), where a network of ranchers have been …

Why Is Fish Welfare Still So Neglected?, Caroline M. Maia
Animal Sentience
Oldfield & Bonano (O&B) address an important problem in the field of fish welfare, one that calls for greater attention from scientists and practitioners. O&B show that fish welfare, particularly at the psychological level, is under-investigated. They focus mainly on zoos and aquaria, but their concerns extend also to other domains, including fish farming. Fish are sentient animals; priority should be given to their welfare in all environments where they are under human care.

Kritika Kultura
Filipino historian and essayist Renato Constantino wrote: “With American education, the Filipinos were not only learning a new language; they were not only forgetting their own language; they were starting to become a new type of American.” What specific strategies did the American colonizers use to create this new type of American? How did they use the public schools to produce their cultural clones? The answer may be found in the language and literature teaching practices of American colonial educators in the Philippines. This paper argues that the Anglo American canon of literature imposed on the Filipinos would not have …

Phenotypic profiling by high throughput microscopy, including Cell Painting, has become a leading tool for screening large sets of perturbations in cellular models. To efficiently analyze this big data, available open-source software requires computational resources usually not available to most laboratories. In addition, the cell-to-cell variation of responses within a population, while collected and analyzed, is usually averaged and unused. We introduce SPACe (Swift Phenotypic Analysis of Cells), an open-source platform for analysis of single-cell image-based morphological profiles produced by Cell Painting. We highlight several advantages of SPACe, including processing speed, accuracy in mechanism of action recognition, reproducibility across biological …
