Evidence-Based Practice, Drug Policy, And The Promotion Of Harm Reduction In Nursing And Society, Jonathan D. Irwin
Leadership Connection
Session presented on Monday, September 19, 2016:
Along with significant morbidity and mortality, the drug epidemic and drug war have brought widespread incarceration, hospitalization, and numerous other individual, family, and social harms. Drug overdose kills more Americans than gun violence, car crashes, or suicide, and injection drug use puts users and the public at risk for HIV, viral hepatitis, and other infections (CDC, 2014). In the researchers' mid-size population home state, over 15,230 were hospitalized at a cost of $16-29 thousand each (Jenkins & Toevs, 2014). With the drug epidemic worsening, the United States and other countries are in the …
Comprehensive Strangulation Education For Health Care Practitioners, Jeanne Parrish
Comprehensive Strangulation Education For Health Care Practitioners, Jeanne Parrish
Leadership Connection
There is no formal strangulation assessment taught to health care practitioners resulting in missed injuries from strangulation and missed opportunities to intervene before violence can escalate in lethality.
The purpose of this project is to develop an educational program for health care practitioners on identifying Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) and strangulation, assessing strangulation injuries, how to complete medico-legal documentation of the same and ethical intervention for the family affected by IPV.
IPV affects almost one third of families in the United States (US), and an estimated three women die in the US every day as a result of IPV. Women …

Development Of A New Practice Model: Postmortem Sexual Evidence Collection Forensic Examiner Multimedia Training Module, Kirsten O. Turkington
Development Of A New Practice Model: Postmortem Sexual Evidence Collection Forensic Examiner Multimedia Training Module, Kirsten O. Turkington
Group: Northern Arizona University School of Nursing, DNP Doctoral Papers
The aim of this Forensic Nurse Examiner (FNE) practice improvement initiative was to design an online multimedia training module for postmortem sexual evidence collection. FNEs, as clinical experts in antemortem sexual assault and interpersonal violence evidence collection, are uniquely qualified for the expanded role in postmortem sexual evidence collection. Current forensic literature lacks data regarding injury identification in sexual homicide victims limiting forensic training, new program development and potential advancements in forensic research. Additionally, inconsistent data collection in sexual homicides poses prosecution concerns with identification of sexual homicides and evidentiary examinations. Antemortem and postmortem sexual evidence collections are not identical …
Opioid Use Disorder Education For Student Nurse Practitioner, Priscilla L. Hussain
Opioid Use Disorder Education For Student Nurse Practitioner, Priscilla L. Hussain
Group: Nebraska Methodist College
Expansion of opioid use disorder (OUD) care is direly required of United States, and student nurse practitioners (NPs) are capable of assessing and addressing OUD in their clin- ical settings. However, academic programs for student medical doctors and NPs lack ad- equate training for such large-scale epidemic. This capstone project recruited 7 student NPs to participate in an interactive learning module prepared by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC’s): “Module 5: Assessing and Addressing Opioid Use Disorderâ€. Overall, student NPs found the module useful in increasing knowledge and ability to diagnose and treat OUD. It is time academic …

Scenario-Based Learning For Forensic Nurse Examiners, Lauren Awe, Valerie Anderson
Group: Nebraska Methodist College
Problem: Approximately 53 million American women have faced a form of violent sexual crime during their lives. Victims often report experiencing further trauma by a healthcare professional who does not have specialized training.
Intervention: Scenario-based trainings prove beneficial in helping handle and address challenging individuals or conversations, in addition to being made aware and addressing one’s own biases. Participation in these trainings have a positive effect on participants’ attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors, in addition to increasing confidence in their roles and improving patient outcomes.
Measures: The Likert Scale, utilizing a zero to five scale, with zero being “not at all†…

Npwh Position Statement: Prevention And Management Of Opioid Misuse And Opioid Use Disorder Among Women Across The Lifespan [September 2020 Update], National Association Of Nurse Practitioners In Women's Health
Group: National Association of Nurse Practitioners in Women's Health (NPWH)
The National Association of Nurse Practitioners in Women's Health (NPWH) supports the role of Women's health nurse practitioners (WHNPs) and other nurse practitioners (NPs) who provide healthcare for women across the lifespan in the provision of safe and effective treatment of pain. In certain cases, this treatment may include the prescription of opioid pain relievers (OPR). NPWH acknowledges that NPs must use evidence-based strategies to reduce harm from the misuse of OPR and to prevent the development of opioid use disorder (OUD). These strategies include screening for opioid use/misuse/ abuse, educating patients about the risks associated with OPR misuse, and …

Npwh Position Statement: Systemic Racism And Implicit Bias In Women's Healthcare, National Association Of Nurse Practitioners In Women's Health
Group: National Association of Nurse Practitioners in Women's Health (NPWH)
The National Association of Nurse Practitioners in Women's Health (NPWH) is committed to addressing structural racism and implicit bias in meaningful ways that will improve Women's healthcare and reduce health disparities. Structural racism encompasses the ways a society fosters racial/ethnic discrimination through intersecting and reinforcing systems. Structural racism creates differential access to opportunities by race/ethnicity and perpetuates inequities among these groups. Implicit bias derives from an individual’s learned stereotypes and prejudices that automatically and unconsciously influence affect, behavior, and cognitive processes. Implicit bias affects patient–clinician interactions, treatment decisions, treatment adherence, and patient outcomes. Implicit bias in the healthcare setting and …

Group: National Association of Nurse Practitioners in Women's Health (NPWH)
The National Association of Nurse Practitioners in Women's Health asserts that all individuals who menstruate should have adequate access to appropriate menstrual products and to facilities that support privacy, safety, hygiene, and sanitation for changing menstrual products, washing body and hands, and cleaning or disposing of used materials. As well, all individuals who experience menstruation should have access to accurate, timely, and age-appropriate information about the menstrual cycle, expected changes that occur from puberty through menopause, and related self-care and hygiene practices. Sociology Faculty Books and Book Chapters
"In what follows, we explore how researchers studying key issues in terrorism and extremism studies have incorporated formers into their work by tracing current trends in the empirical research in a North American context. First, we examine how those relying on interviews with formers have uncovered a complex web of overlapping push and pull factors that predispose extremist onset. Second, we explore how the use of formers to understand radicalization processes has provided valuable insight that would not have been available through secondary sources. Third, we discuss how formers have better informed our understanding of the processes of leaving extremism. …

Journal of the Australian Indigenous HealthInfoNet
The life experiences of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing are often more complex than for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who are hearing, or non-Aboriginal Australians who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing. In turn, this can make engaging with and benefiting from policies and programs such as Australia’s National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) more complex, particularly for individuals living in remote settings. To understand more about these complexities, yarnings were held with 15 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander NDIS participants who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing living in rural …
