Symposium Introduction: The Effect Of Dobbs On Work Law, Nicole Buonocore Porter
Employee Rights and Employment Policy Journal
In March 2023, Chicago-Kent College of Law hosted a symposium—The Effect of Dobbs on Work Law—to explore the ways that the Dobbs abortion decision has affected the workplace. The presenters at that live symposium wrote articles that are being published in this journal. As the host of the symposium and the Editor of this Journal, I use this Article to introduce the articles in this symposium issue and to provide my reflections on them. I also briefly address the topic that I presented at the symposium—the effect of Dobbs on people with disabilities.
The Nuanced Relationship Between Mindfulness, Racial Prejudice, And Policy Support, Jared Michael Cutler
The Nuanced Relationship Between Mindfulness, Racial Prejudice, And Policy Support, Jared Michael Cutler
Dissertations and Theses
Researchers have investigated the relationship between mindfulness and prejudice, although the findings have been somewhat inconsistent. Two broad factors may be responsible for these mixed findings: different conceptualizations of mindfulness across studies, and ideological differences among participants. Attention monitoring and acceptance, together, are proposed to be responsible for the psychological benefits of mindfulness, including reduced emotion rumination. Attention alone, however, strengthens rumination, which predicts prejudice. Additionally, prejudice hinders the endorsement of equitable policy. As such, mindfulness measures and interventions that capture attention alone, then, may be positively related to prejudice and negatively associated with support for equitable policy, whereas mindfulness …

Addressing White Collar And Corporate Crime: Prosecution, Nonprosecution, Or Deferred Prosecution?, Kristine Artello, Jay S. Albanese
Addressing White Collar And Corporate Crime: Prosecution, Nonprosecution, Or Deferred Prosecution?, Kristine Artello, Jay S. Albanese
Journal of Criminal Justice and Law
Trends in white-collar and corporate crime prosecutions have been examined over two decades. It is found that prosecutions have dropped substantially over the last 10 years. Reasons for this trend are explored. A recent trend to use deferred and nonprosecution agreements (DNPAs) as an alternative to criminal prosecution helps explain some of this decline. The frequency and nature of their use against organizations are examined based on the charges involved and the type of corporate defendant. Interviews with former federal investigators and prosecutors shed light on prosecution decisions against organizations and potential changes that might deter corporate misconduct more effectively.
Juvenile Life Without Parole In Pennsylvania: Age, Cognitive Immaturity, And Culpability, Margaret E. Leigey, Marco Granston
Juvenile Life Without Parole In Pennsylvania: Age, Cognitive Immaturity, And Culpability, Margaret E. Leigey, Marco Granston
Journal of Criminal Justice and Law
While there has been momentum at both the federal and state levels to curtail extreme punishments for justice-involved juveniles (The Campaign for the Fair Sentencing of Youth, 2023), 22 states continue to permit the sentence of juvenile life without parole (JLWOP). Pennsylvania is among them. This essay focuses on judicial rationale in five JLWOP re-sentencing cases in the state, and more specifically, how the appellant’s age and implied adult-level culpability were used by the judge to justify permanent incarceration. In the re-sentencing documents, judges neglected the ample research in the areas of neuroscience and developmental psychology that indicates reduced legal …

Quantum Intelligence In Beyond 5g Networks: Current Progress, And Open Avenues, Byeong-Gwon Kang, Yunyoung Nam
Sustainable Machine Intelligence Journal
The emergence of fifth-generation (5G) wireless technologies leads to enlarging network complexity as a result of massive data generation, exhaustive operating costs, time, energy, and the burdens of planning and management. Artificial intelligence (AI) has been demonstrated to have a vital role in improving data analytics and decision-making in massive 5G networks. On the other hand, Quantum Computing is an evolving technology for handling exponential expansion in the data dimensions and calculating linear algebra quicker and more proficiently than traditional computers implying reduced computational costs and energy consumption. The unification between these disciplines engenders the concept of “Quantum Intelligence", which …

Bans Beyond Borders: Entrenching Out-Of-State Abortion Bans And California’S Attempt To Shield Its Medical Providers From Liability, Anja Alexander
Loyola of Los Angeles Law Review
Since the Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization opinion stripped U.S. citizens of the constitutional right to obtain pre-viability abortions, individual states have been vested with the power to regulate the procedure within their borders. As a result, many states have banned early-term abortions, while some have drafted bans that at-tempt to extend beyond their borders, aiming to impede the ability of their citizens to travel to other states and obtain the procedure where it is legal. These confusing and intentionally vague abortion bans have had a chilling effect on health care throughout the United States as medical professionals fear …

Why We Should Stop Talking About Violent Offenders: Storytelling And Decarceration, Mira Edmonds
Why We Should Stop Talking About Violent Offenders: Storytelling And Decarceration, Mira Edmonds
Articles
The movement to decarcerate risks foundering because of its failure to grapple with so-called violent offenders, who make up nearly half of U.S. prisoners. The treatment of people serving sentences for offenses categorized as violent is a primary reason for the continued problem of mass incarceration, despite widespread awareness of the phenomenon and significant bipartisan interest in its reduction. People convicted of “violent offenses” are serving historically anomalous and excessively long sentences, are generally denied clemency and compassionate release, and are excluded from a wide array of legal reform and policy changes with decarceral aims. Keeping these people in prison …

Hairry Potter World: Are Gel And Oil The Sorcerers Magic To Altering External Cocaine And Be Concentrations In Hair, Esther Abady
Student Theses
Hair external contamination poses significant challenges to the interpretation of hair testing results. Previous studies have shown that cosmetic hair treatments can reduce the concentration of drugs already present in the hair shaft. However, the impact of these treatments on externally deposited drugs remains largely unexplored. This study aimed to investigate how gel and oil treatments affect external contamination by cocaine and benzoylecgonine. Fifteen authentic hair samples, with various colors and textures, were collected from volunteers and confirmed negative for cocaine and benzoylecgonine using a fully validated LC-MS/MS method. Each sample was divided into three groups: Group A underwent a …
