Holiday Chaos To Corporate Crisis: A Lesson From Christmas Vacation In Executive Protection, Rachael A. Zerr
Holiday Chaos To Corporate Crisis: A Lesson From Christmas Vacation In Executive Protection, Rachael A. Zerr
Publications and Research
National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation (1989) may be best known for its holiday humor, but it also inadvertently highlights critical issues in corporate security and executive protection. Through the kidnapping of Clark Griswold's boss, Frank Shirley, the film illustrates the vulnerabilities faced by high-net-worth individuals and executives. This paper draws parallels between the fictional events of the film and real-world cases of executive kidnapping and violence, emphasizing the need for robust security measures. It discusses modern executive protection strategies, including risk assessments, real-time monitoring, and cybersecurity, and highlights the role of technology in mitigating threats. Ultimately, this paper argues that as …

Selecting Lower Court Judges In The Senate Lame Duck Session, Carl W. Tobias
Selecting Lower Court Judges In The Senate Lame Duck Session, Carl W. Tobias
Richmond Public Interest Law Review
When Congress reconvened in November, Donald Trump had won a second term in the White House and Republicans had secured a majority in the upper chamber. The federal judiciary thus became a salient point of contention in the Senate lame duck session. During Trump’s initial four years as chief executive, he and the Republican chamber majority rejected or substantially deemphasized longstanding requirements and customs of judicial selection to fill all the levels of the federal courts with young, highly conservative jurists, including thirteen whom they seated after Trump had lost the 2020 election to President Joe Biden. These phenomena threatened …
Factors Of Police Decision-Making Of Veterans In Crisis, Paul N. Guzman
Factors Of Police Decision-Making Of Veterans In Crisis, Paul N. Guzman
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Since 9/11, the need for veteran crisis intervention has increased. Police agencies often respond to veterans in crisis by deploying officers who have completed Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) training, and many of the officers are prior military. However, little research has focused specifically on the factors influencing police officers’ decision-making when responding to veterans in crisis. The purpose of this quantitative study was to examine the association and predictability between event type, veteran behavior, police officer military experience, police officer CIT, and the disposition of veterans as measured by arrest, referral for mental health services, and the use of force. …

Triggering Fear: The Relationship Between Party Affiliation, News Sources, And Gun Control, Gabriella J. Bartsch
Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters
Freedom and democratic principles are our government's core and essential for upholding a democratic society. This paper considers the relationship between political identity, media consumption, and the fear of government restrictions on firearms within the United States. This study analyzes correlations between these variables using data from the Chapman Survey of American Fears, Wave 10. Among the interesting findings are that Republicans and conservatives are more likely to fear government restrictions on firearms than Democrats, Independents, and liberals. Another finding is that one's preferred news sources can influence beliefs toward policies, including those on firearm restrictions, and shape people's perceptions …

Perceptions Of False Acceptance Of Guilt Or Punishment Within Military Non-Judicial System, Jennifer Rockwell
Perceptions Of False Acceptance Of Guilt Or Punishment Within Military Non-Judicial System, Jennifer Rockwell
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
An innocent individual falsely accepting guilt and punishment for something they did not do confounds society at large. This research expands upon the literature studying false confessions and false guilty pleas within the civilian courts to the particulars of the military judicial system and specifically that of the non-judicial system. Understanding the possibility for false acceptance of guilt and punishment within this system can lead to process or program changes that would benefit both the military in general and the individual members of the military. Social influence theory along with social role theory and social norms theory forms the foundation …
Police Officer Perceptions Of Mental Wellbeing Needs: A Multi-Methods Study, Suzanne Hakeos
Police Officer Perceptions Of Mental Wellbeing Needs: A Multi-Methods Study, Suzanne Hakeos
MUSC Theses and Dissertations
Police officers are exposed to repeated traumatic exposures (e.g., deaths, abuse, threats to personal and community member safety) and organizational stressors (e.g., poor leadership and support, low job control) throughout their careers. These job-related exposures and stressors have been shown to increase the officers’ risk for developing physical (e.g., cardiovascular disease, sleep deprivation) and mental health issues (e.g., depression, anxiety, hypervigilance, post-traumatic stress disorder, hopelessness, substance abuse, self-isolation, suicidal ideations). Outside of their work environment and duties, factors and stressors related to the officer (e.g., beliefs, values, coping strategies, personality, life experiences), interpersonal relationship dynamics (e.g., work-family demands, conflict, support), …

Undocumented Hispanics' Trust In Municipal Law Enforcement, Kendel Cole
Undocumented Hispanics' Trust In Municipal Law Enforcement, Kendel Cole
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The purpose of the quantitative causal-comparative study was to examine the extent to which undocumented Hispanic immigrants in the United States trust municipal law enforcement differently based on whether they live in a sanctuary city or a non-sanctuary city. The research question (RQ) asks if there are significant differences in trust in municipal law enforcement among undocumented Hispanic immigrants in sanctuary cities compared to non-sanctuary cities. The Narrative Policy Framework was the theoretical foundation for the study. The study occurred in sanctuary cities and non-sanctuary cities. Sanctuary city status was the independent variable in the RQ, reflecting the self-identification of …

Long-Term Segregation And Seclusion For People With An Intellectual Disability And/Or Autism In Hospitals: Critique Of The Current State Of Affairs, Rohit Shankar
Peninsula Medical School
In November 2023, the Department of Health and Social Care published guidance, entitled 'Baroness Hollins' Final Report: My Heart Breaks-Solitary Confinement in Hospital Has no Therapeutic Benefit for People with a Learning Disability and Autistic People'. The report's commendable analysis of the problems and identification of the areas where practice should be improved is unfortunately not matched by many of its recommendations, which appear to be contrary to evidence-based approaches. The concerns are wide-ranging, from the use of the term 'solitary confinement' for current long-Term segregation (LTS) and seclusion, to presumption that all LTS and seclusion is bad, to holding …
The Relative Strength Of Social Dominance Orientation, Belief In A Just World, And Colorblind Racial Attitudes In Predicting Support For Race-Based College-Admission Affirmative Action Policies, Allison Nicole Gaines
The Relative Strength Of Social Dominance Orientation, Belief In A Just World, And Colorblind Racial Attitudes In Predicting Support For Race-Based College-Admission Affirmative Action Policies, Allison Nicole Gaines
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Students accepted into college programs are granted an opportunity to develop marketable skills they can use to their advantage in a competitive job market. However, students are not always afforded equal access to these opportunities. While some colleges and universities implemented race-based affirmative action policies to mitigate discrimination in the admissions process, resistance to these policies has impeded efforts to ensure that applicants receive an equal educational opportunity. Previous studies examined various legitimizing myths, such as the myth of meritocracy and just world beliefs. Yet, no studies have determined the relative strength of social dominance orientation, belief in a just …

“Mexico Has Spilt American Blood Upon American Soil!” The Role Of The Mexico-U.S. Border In The Promotion Of American Nationalism, 1821-1920, Jon M. Williams Phd
Sociology ETDs
International borders not only serve as the edge of a nation-state's sovereign territory, but they also aid in informing popular conceptions of its national identity. This study examines how the Mexico - U.S. border served as a spark for episodes of American nationalism from 1821-1920. In examining three historical periods whereby the border was forming, disrupted, or challenged, I demonstrate how borders serve as sources, both symbolically and physically for the expressions of American nationalism. I utilize inductive qualitative discourse analysis of American actors embedded along the border, in Mexico, or serving as political leaders, to sample some of the …

Utah V. Strieff And Teaching Analysis, Lisa A. Tucker
Utah V. Strieff And Teaching Analysis, Lisa A. Tucker
St. John's Law Review
(Excerpt)
In Utah v. Strieff, the Supreme Court considered whether the Fourth Amendment required suppression of evidence obtained in an unlawful investigatory stop when police discovered that the person stopped was subject to lawful arrest based on an unrelated outstanding warrant. The majority opinion, written by Justice Clarence Thomas, held that suppression was not required in such a case; the dissent by Justice Sotomayor argued that it should be.
These two legal opinions took jarringly different approaches to determining a question of law, one that disproportionately impacts people of color, who are statistically most likely to be unlawfully stopped …
Document Subpoenas And The Moral Dilemma At The Heart Of The Privilege Against Self Incrimination, John W. Nields Jr.
Document Subpoenas And The Moral Dilemma At The Heart Of The Privilege Against Self Incrimination, John W. Nields Jr.
St. John's Law Review
(Excerpt)
This Article will show that document subpoenas will nearly always compel “testimony.” This is so because the subpoena recipient is legally required to disclose to the party issuing the subpoena each and every document she has that is called for by the subpoena; and because, as Wigmore points out, the party issuing the subpoena will get the incriminating documents it seeks only if the subpoena recipient responds truthfully, disclosing every such incriminating document she has. And this means that the subpoena is compelling “testimony.”
That is the core teaching of the Hubbell decision in which the Court cites …
Tribal Law: It’S Not That Scary, Adam Crepelle
Tribal Law: It’S Not That Scary, Adam Crepelle
Buffalo Law Review
Tribal law is often presented in a negative light. Indeed, the Supreme Court’s skepticism about tribal law has resulted in severe limitations on tribal jurisdiction. This Article challenges perceptions of tribal law by surveying tribal law. While tribal law does rely on tribal customs, tribal law is largely consistent with mainstream American law. Tribal laws are often modeled on state codes or the Restatement.
This Article contends tribal law mirrors western law for two primary reasons—efficiency and legitimacy. Regarding efficiency, borrowing a western law is easier than creating a law from scratch; plus, many laws are common across cultures. A …
