Racial Disproportionality In Exclusionary Discipline Rates In The United States, Cara Crisostomo
Racial Disproportionality In Exclusionary Discipline Rates In The United States, Cara Crisostomo
Masters Projects
Racial disparity in exclusionary discipline rates in K-12 schools in the United States is a problem that was first written about in the 1970s. Unfortunately, it remains a problem nearly fifty years later and one that has not been addressed by school districts and schools. Schools have implemented programs such as restorative justice to address this disparity, but research shows that these programs center Whiteness. Disparity either does not improve with these programs or even increases. School staff’s cross-cultural differences from their students and staff’s implicit bias and subjectivity in the discipline process contribute to the disparity. Therefore, it is …
Teaching Shakespeare In Prison, Renford Reese, Rachel Tracie
Teaching Shakespeare In Prison, Renford Reese, Rachel Tracie
Journal of Prison Education Research
The Prison Education Project (PEP) offers life skills and academic courses in 30 correctional facilities in California. Founded in 2011, PEP uses university student and faculty volunteers to teach a range of 32 introductory courses during three seven-week semesters: Fall, Spring, Summer. One of PEP’s most popular courses is the “Introduction to Shakespeare” course. This article examines the impact of teaching an “Introduction to Shakespeare” course in prison. This course introduces in-custody students to the literary interpretation of Shakespeare in the context of their own lived experience. Students in this course deconstruct the use of language and analyze the social, …

Excelsior: Leadership in Teaching and Learning
Grounded in intersectional theory, this article explores the experience of LGBTQ+ students with disabilities. LGBTQ+ students with disabilities experience higher levels of bullying, harassment, suicidal ideation and other challenges in school. Post-school outcomes also reveal negative realities. Schools need to ensure that support is provided to students living at the intersection of LGBTQ+ identity and disability. Implications for school leaders, educational professionals, and educator preparation programs are discussed with recommendations for improving outcomes.

Defending Critical Race Theory, Nick J. Sciullo
Defending Critical Race Theory, Nick J. Sciullo
Seattle University Law Review Online
Recent attacks on Critical Race Theory (CRT) have caused wide ranging discussions about CRT in a diverse number of disciplines, throughout all grade levels, and around the world in media. While CRT adherents have long wished for more engagement with CRT, the recent firestorm of attacks has been surprising at best, and horribly worrisome and frightening at worst. Efforts to ban CRT in schools, while likely not having much effect given the improbability that CRT is taught in any K-12 schools, have politicized CRT in new ways (though like all education, it was always political). Moreover, this engagement is clearly …

Pineapple Express: The Legality Of Introducing Cannabis Tourism To Arkansas, Chloe Tyner
Human Nutrition and Hospitality Management Undergraduate Honors Theses
This research delves into the legal aspects of introducing cannabis tourism to Arkansas. The objective of this study was to create a framework for hospitality professionals in Arkansas to understand what areas of recreational cannabis law would impact their industry should Arkansas legalize recreational cannabis. Through a document analysis comparing Arkansas and Colorado’s liquor and cannabis laws, this study investigated how both states regulate alcohol and cannabis and the legal challenges Colorado has seen since its inception of recreational cannabis sales.
Challenges to this study included a limited existing body of knowledge for cannabis tourism and the contradicting federal and …

Unmasking The Authoritarian Mob Boss: A Critical Analysis Of Donald Trump's Political Leadership, Najja K. Baptist, Kenneth A. Clark
Political Science Faculty Publications and Presentations
This article comprehensively examines Donald Trump’s political leadership, arguing that his tenure as the 45th President of the United States exhibited characteristics commonly associated with authoritarian mob bosses. Drawing upon various empirical evidence and theoretical political science frameworks, the study sheds light on the underlying dynamics that shaped Trump’s leadership style and its implications for democratic governance. The analysis begins by contextualizing Trump’s rise to power within the erosion of democratic norms. It explores how his rhetoric, characterized by demagoguery and the demonization of opponents, mirrors the tactics employed by mob bosses to consolidate their power and suppress dissent. Moreover, …

Fog To Pyre: The Impact Of Supreme Court Judgment Complexity On Dowry Deaths, Abhinav Anand, Sanchit Jain, Jalaj Pathak, Sheetal Sekhri
Working Papers
We use Natural Language Processing (NLP) techniques to examine if judgments’ complexity in Supreme Court cases influences dowry deaths in India.Leveraging the quasi-random assignment of judges to cases, we find that aone-unit increase in the complexity of judgments captured by the Fog Index ina state year increases dowry deaths by 2% in the subsequent period. Based onestimates of the Value of Statistical Life (VSL), this increase in dowry-relatedhomicides of women costs $1.83 million in a state year or 51 million USD forthe country annually. In otherwise similar judgments, very high complexity increases the incidence of future dowry deaths by 15%. …

New Ways Of Being White: White Families Striving To Raise Young Antiracists, Katie Kitchens
New Ways Of Being White: White Families Striving To Raise Young Antiracists, Katie Kitchens
Education (PhD) Dissertations
In asking the questions “How are white families striving to create antiracist family cultures simultaneously resisting reifying white dominant culture, and how are white children making sense of their racial identities in those families?” I had the opportunity to deepen previously established relationships with three families asking similar questions. Our collective querying resulted in data collected using critical ethnographic methods rooted in culturally responsive methods including fieldwork, formal and informal conversations, and written narrative. Unique themes emerged from each family’s data, from which I drew three major theoretical conclusions: the importance of (1) Critical Consciousness (2) Antiracist Community, and (3) …

Centering The People’S Voice In Teaching And Learning First-Year Criminal Law, Fareed Nassor Hayat
Criminal Law Practitioner
This article proposes a people-centered approach to teaching first-year criminal law that elevates the people’s voice by using rap music to understand complex legal concepts. Incorporating rap music transforms the classroom and the practice of law to include those it has previously excluded and provides a people-centered means to expand legal education more broadly.
Fines And The Federal Court System: Exploring The Differences And Intersection For Male And Female Defendants With Dependents, Hali Higgins
Fines And The Federal Court System: Exploring The Differences And Intersection For Male And Female Defendants With Dependents, Hali Higgins
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
Past research has consistently found that women are treated more leniently compared to men in the criminal justice system. Little research has examined gender and its relation to fine amounts imposed in the federal court system, and almost no research has examined if dependents plays a role in determining fines. This thesis operates under focal concerns theory, and addresses a gap by examining if gender and presence of dependents impacts the likelihood and amount of a fine imposed. Using the Monitoring of Federal Criminal Sentences from 2020-2021 data, this thesis examined if men are more likely to get fines imposed …
Criminalizing Ecocide, Rebecca Hamilton
Criminalizing Ecocide, Rebecca Hamilton
Scholarly Articles in Law Reviews & Journals
Amid widespread acknowledgment that we live on a planet in peril, the term “ecocide” packs a powerful rhetorical punch. Extant regulatory approaches to environmental protection feel insufficient in the face of the triple threat of climate change, pollution, and biodiversity loss. International criminal prosecution for ecocide, by contrast, promises to meet the moment, and a recent proposal to introduce ecocide into the canon of core international crimes is gaining traction. Assuming the push to criminalize ecocide continues to gain momentum, this Article argues that the primary (and perhaps, sole) benefit that international criminal law can offer in this context is …

Stockholm Syndrome And Divorce-Related Decision Making Of The Abused Spouse, Simela Sidiropoulou
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Knowledge of the challenges faced by domestic violence victims with Stockholm Syndrome (SS) symptoms during divorce was limited at the time of the current study. Previous findings supported frequent occurrence of doubts during divorce proceedings due to SS, with negative effects on victims’ well-being after separation. The purpose of this qualitative study was to investigate victims’ decision making processes affected by SS features. Data were collected from semistructured interviews with six mental health providers treating victims with SS symptoms during divorce proceedings. Interpretive phenomenological analysis was applied to identify vital experiences through the perspective of therapists. Analysis determined four themes. …

Racial Identity & Psychological Distress: The Mediating Role Of Sense Of Community And Spiritual Struggles Among Black Christians., Adebayo Ajibade
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Religious practice and church membership have historically been protective and critical in Black communities in the United States and across the African diaspora. Demographic studies have shown a consistent decline in religious adherence and practice across racial and ethnic groups in the United States. However, the decline in religious practice and participation in religious communities has been less pronounced among individuals of African descent. Participation in one’s religious community is often a source of positive social engagement and can foster positive intrapersonal outcomes (e.g., wellbeing). However, religious communities and religious practice can also be the source of conflict and emotional …
Contested Spaces: Unhoused Black Men And Their Survival Within The Urban Landscape., Jonathan Riley Ellis
Contested Spaces: Unhoused Black Men And Their Survival Within The Urban Landscape., Jonathan Riley Ellis
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Thousands of unhoused Black men sleep, live and eat on the streets daily. Many lack the essential resources to survive through the elements. However, little is known about how unhoused Black men share space with the public, businesses, law enforcement and each other. Furthermore, little is known about how unhoused Black men access services once displacement has occurred. Drawing on participant observation and in-depth interviews, I examine how unhoused Black men navigate occupied urban spaces. I find that unhoused Black men regularly encounter contested spaces with businesses, the public, hospitals, and law enforcement. Additionally, unhoused Black men must navigate through …
Virtual Engagement: Can Law Enforcement Benefit From Utilizing Extended Reality In Their Training Systems?, Jacob Maxwell Read
Virtual Engagement: Can Law Enforcement Benefit From Utilizing Extended Reality In Their Training Systems?, Jacob Maxwell Read
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Introduction: Extended reality (XR) technologies offer innovative training solutions for various industries, including healthcare, manufacturing, aviation, sports, military, and law enforcement. XR can provide a solution for training where job tasks are difficult or near impossible to train in real-life. A human factors research and design approach could provide an effective, low-risk, and cost and time-efficient option for integrating the use of XR technology into training for many industries. To advance this goal, this research answered two main research questions: (1) What training needs/challenges are best suited for an XR training system designed for law enforcement officers (LEOs)? (2) …
Unveiling Emergency Psychiatric Healthcare Disparities: An Analysis Of U.S. Emergency Department Encounters., Anna Elizabeth Kelecy
Unveiling Emergency Psychiatric Healthcare Disparities: An Analysis Of U.S. Emergency Department Encounters., Anna Elizabeth Kelecy
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This thesis seeks to uncover emergency psychiatric healthcare disparities by examining data of emergency departments from the National Hospital Ambulatory Medical Care Surveys, years 2020 and 2021. The two outcome variables are the length of stay in the emergency department and the urgency with which a patient should be seen. There are multiple independent variables that are analyzed, including age, residence, sex, race/ethnicity, pay type, region, and metropolitan statistical area status. The results indicate that there are disparities, especially in terms of race/ethnicity, region, and metropolitan statistical area status for each dependent variable. These findings indicate that there may be …

Housing Policy And Eviction: An Iterative Process., Oleksandra Maksymivna Belinova
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Previously, eviction has been perceived as a legal problem rather than a social issue. Previous literature examines eviction as a social problem and the role of program administrators in policy implementation. Through a mixed-methods study of in-depth semi structured interviews and secondary descriptive analysis of eviction data, this study serves explores program administrators’ perspectives on housing policy and eviction practices and the impact these perspectives have on policy implementation and eviction prevention. The results indicate that program administrators view eviction as a legal phenomenon influenced by housing market dynamics with eviction prevention efforts limited by data collection and the lack …

Understanding And Improving Law Enforcement Investigations Of Human Trafficking: Focus On Labor Trafficking, Daniela Peterka-Benton, Alison Boak, Christabelle Robinson, Madison Kranis
Articles, Presentations, and Reports
The National Expert Roundtable on Labor Trafficking brought together survivors, prosecutors, law enforcement agents, advocates, and service providers to address systemic gaps in labor trafficking investigations. The discussion revealed that labor trafficking cases remain under-recognized and inadequately prosecuted compared to sex trafficking. Key recommendations include: developing multi-disciplinary task forces, improving screening tools and victim interviews, integrating survivor-led peer support, and strengthening partnerships between police and service providers. The report emphasizes victim-centered, culturally competent methodologies and enhanced training to ensure survivors’ well-being alongside justice.
