Socio-Legal Review
As the earliest Editor’s Notes for the Socio-Legal Review (‘SLR’ or ‘Review’) recorded, SLR was established in 2005 with the help of a publication grant from the UK-based Modern Law Review (‘MLR’), and the support of Professors Tim Murphy and later Martin Loughlin of the London School of Economics. A chance encounter that some students had with Professor Tim Murphy, at the time the General Editor for MLR and founding Editorial Board member for the UK-based journal Law and Critique, at an academic conference at the National Law School of India University, Bengaluru (‘NLSIU’) led to active discussions around what …

Community involvement in research is key to translating science into practice, and new approaches to engaging community members in research design and implementation are needed. The Community Scientist Program, established at the MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston in 2018 and expanded to two other Texas institutions in 2021, provides researchers with rapid feedback from community members on study feasibility and design, cultural appropriateness, participant recruitment, and research implementation. This paper aims to describe the Community Scientist Program and assess Community Scientists' and researchers' satisfaction with the program. We present the analysis of the data collected from 116 Community Scientists …

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
BACKGROUND: Secondhand smoke exposure (SHSe) among youth is a serious public health concern, leading to an increased risk of conditions such as asthma and respiratory infections. However, there is little research on SHSe among vulnerable populations, such as racial and sexual minorities. Understanding the factors associated with youth SHSe in homes and vehicles is crucial to developing better protective policies.
METHODS: This study utilized 2020 data from the National Youth Tobacco Survey, a representative sample of middle- and high-school students in the US. The primary outcomes were youth SHSe at home and while riding in a vehicle. Multinomial regression models …
Politicizing Antisemitism Amidst Today's Educational Culture Wars, Lili Levi
Politicizing Antisemitism Amidst Today's Educational Culture Wars, Lili Levi
Articles
The traditional narrative of American Jewry emphasizes American exceptionalism with respect to antisemitism. But there have been clear signs of a resurgence of public antisemitism in the United States even before the massive rise in antisemitic expression and incidents associated with the Israel-Hamas war of fall 2023.
One of the notable aspects of the rise and normalization of antisemitic expression is the deployment of antisemitism as a political tool. For example, in addition to Democrats and Republicans accusing each other of complicity in antisemitism, both federal policy since the Trump era and state anti-antisemitism legislation have targeted campus antisemitism in …

Background The COVID-19 pandemic produced system-level changes within the criminal legal system and community-based substance use disorder (SUD) treatment system with impacts on recovery efforts. This study examines rural and urban clinicians’ perspectives of COVID-19 on SUD treatment delivery for people on community supervision.
Methods Virtual qualitative interviews were conducted between April and October 2020 with 25 community supervision clinicians employed by Kentucky’s Department of Corrections (DOC), who conduct assessments and facilitate community-based treatment linkages for individuals on probation or parole. Transcripts were analyzed in NVivo using directed content analysis methods.
Results Clinicians were predominantly white (92%) and female (88%) …

Black women have disproportionately alarming HSV-2 infection rates yet receive little attention in sexual health literature. Using a strengths-based resilience framework, this study sought to determine culturally relevant protective predictors of self-esteem for Black women who are justice-involved and have HSV-2. The authors conducted secondary data analysis on data from the “Black Women in the Study of Epidemics (B-WISE) Project,” a longitudinal prospective study investigating health disparities and health services utilization among Black women with justice involvement. At baseline, N = 151 Black women with HSV-2 who were incarcerated or on probation completed survey measures assessing selfesteem, ethnic identity affirmation …
Two Decades Of Gender Troubles In Iceland: The Translation Of Gender, Differences, And The Uncertainty Of Meaning, Katrín Harðardóttir
Two Decades Of Gender Troubles In Iceland: The Translation Of Gender, Differences, And The Uncertainty Of Meaning, Katrín Harðardóttir
Journal of Feminist Scholarship
When “gender” was translated to Icelandic in 1998 as kyngervi, the notion of performative gender had been circulating in Icelandic academia for a little over a year. The introduction and dissemination of the term inside academia then became quite rapid, with the help of diverse professional fields such as art, literary, history and gender studies, but criticism on the translation did not appear until well into the second decade of the twenty-first century, when it was pointed out that the translated term conveys a difference between “sex” and “gender,” with the possible consequence of perpetuating this dichotomy although it …

Factors Related To Attitude-Associated Stigma Among Caregivers Of Mentally Ill Patients In Tanzania., Clavery Lyela, Ezekiel H. Mbao, Stephen Kibusi, Tumbwene Mwansisya, Phillipo L. Chalya
School of Nursing & Midwifery, East Africa
Background:
Attitude-associated stigmas towards patients with mental illness affect most patients. However, the factors related to attitude-associated stigma among caregivers remain unknown. This might lead to the disruption of family relationships, low self-esteem, lack of socialization and other adverse effects. Therefore, the current study aimed to determine the associated stigma among caregivers of a patient with a mental illness
Methods:
A quantitative approach, with a cross-sectional study design, was used, involving two standardized questionnaires: Community Attitudes Towards the Mentally Ill (CAMI) Scale and Modified Consumer Experiences of Stigma Questionnaire (MCESQ), which were used to measure attitudes associated with …
Strong Partnerships Require Collaboration: The Investigation Of Interagency Collaboration Efforts Between Schools And Community-Based Organizations In Supporting Students Experiencing Homelessness, Iantheya K. Brown
Dissertations
This study provides valuable insights into effective interagency collaboration strategies for supporting students experiencing homelessness. Through qualitative analysis, three overarching themes and seven sub-themes emerged, highlighting the importance of partnership building, support system enhancement, and addressing the complex needs of students experiencing homelessness. The findings underscore the crucial role of early relationship establishment, McKinney-Vento education, transparent communication, and shared information in maintaining and expanding partnerships. However, challenges persist, including discrepancies in definitions and misconceptions about homelessness, necessitating a more empathetic approach. Leadership engagement and culturally responsive practices are essential for navigating these challenges and fostering effective collaboration. By adopting a …

Community Organizing For Democratic Renewal: The Significance Of Jacques Maritain’S Support For Saul Alinsky And His Methods, Brian Stiltner
Philosophy, Theology and Religious Studies Faculty Publications
Jacques Maritain’s ideas about democratic renewal remain as important and inspirational as ever. A less well-known element of Maritain’s political thinking is his support for grassroots community organizing. This support, peppered throughout his writings, comes into stark relief when examining his longtime friendship and correspondence with Saul Alinsky, the dean of community organizing in the US. This article argues, first, that we must understand Maritain and Alinsky’s friendship to properly appreciate the legacy of Maritain’s political thought and, second, that understanding the complementarity of their approaches allows us to see that together these two friends present a powerful strategy for …

Trigger Events And Leadership: Crucible Moments In Leadership, Timothy M. Authier
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
Being and becoming an educational leader is a process that engages multiple levels of challenge, training, processing, and understanding. The many demands placed on school administrators create many challenges and put a great deal of adversity in the pathway of administrators. The training process involving graduate degrees in educational leadership attempts to support aspiring principals and district leaders by applying technical skills and practices. However, the challenges and adversity that arise in education consistently cause other factors, of which administrators may have some awareness but need more official training and teaching on navigating. Thus, topics frequently discussed, such as emotional …
How To Create Feminist Policy: The 2021-2022 Chilean Constitutional Rewrite, Maria Zambrano Davila
How To Create Feminist Policy: The 2021-2022 Chilean Constitutional Rewrite, Maria Zambrano Davila
Araneum: Richmond Journal of American & Global Affairs
Had it been approved, the 2022 Chilean Constitutional draft would have been the first Constitution in world history to be written by the same number of men and women. At the same time, it would have been one of the most progressive constitutions worldwide, guaranteeing the right to abortion; recognizing carework as an economic activity; and mandating equal representation for women in Chilean Congress, the Supreme Court, and political parties, among others. During the summer of 2022, I interviewed 12 women delegates from the 2021 - 2022 Chilean Constitutional Convention to understand the impact of gender parity in the policy …
The Phenomenology Of Success: Women Who Made It To The C-Suite Despite Barriers, Bettye H. Smith
The Phenomenology Of Success: Women Who Made It To The C-Suite Despite Barriers, Bettye H. Smith
Dissertations
Multiple researchers have explored avenues to achieve gender diversity in leadership, primarily by studying the barriers to success for aspiring women leaders. Despite barriers, a small group of women have risen to the top positions of US corporations, demonstrating that there is a path to success and highlighting an opportunity to address leadership diversity differently. Whereas most research on gender diversity in leadership focuses on the barriers women encounter, this qualitative phenomenological study focused on how women can succeed. By leveraging Bronfenbrenner’s ecological systems theory to explore systems that enabled a phenomenal group of women to advance to the C-suite, …

This paper analyzes a Participatory Action Research (PAR) Project focused on improving public safety and community lighting in one Latinx immigrant community in California as a case example to better understand the possibilities for university-community-government partnerships. The paper explores residents' motivations for their sustained participation in the project, the relationships and power dynamics that led to a $100,000 commitment from the city government to fund the recommendations of the PAR collective, and the social contexts that allowed community residents to position themselves as political actors as the PAR project progressed over the 2021-2022 academic year. This case example illustrates how …
Ambivalent Sexism Impacts Attitudes Toward Marital Surname Change Decisions, Erin N. Palmwood
Ambivalent Sexism Impacts Attitudes Toward Marital Surname Change Decisions, Erin N. Palmwood
Psychological Science Articles
Couples are making increasingly varied surname change decisions following marriage. However, despite this increased variability, cultural attitudes toward nontraditional surname choices remain rooted in sexism, with women who retain their maiden names often being viewed negatively as individuals and as partners within their marriages. The present study aimed to examine ambivalent sexism as a potential moderator of the link between women’s and men’s nontraditional surname choices and negative perceptions of those individuals and their marriages. To this end, participants (n = 129) viewed a series of vignettes describing heterosexual couples who made traditional vs. nontraditional choices regarding whether to …
Caught In The Crosshairs Of Educational Reform: How Teacher Labor Markets Respond To Polarized Education Policies, Danielle Duffy Chipman
Caught In The Crosshairs Of Educational Reform: How Teacher Labor Markets Respond To Polarized Education Policies, Danielle Duffy Chipman
Theses and Dissertations--Public Policy and Administration
Since the passage of No Child Left Behind (NCLB) teachers have been caught in the crosshairs of political debates about education policy (Davis, 2014; EPE Research Center, 2013a; Steiner & Woo, 2021; Woo et al., 2022; Zubrzycki, 2016). As political polarization between parties increased in the 2000s, debates about education policy became more acrimonious impacting teachers’ work lives (Heltzel & Laurin, 2020; Iyengar, 2021; Layman et al., 2006). The topic of these debates ranges from curriculum changes such as Common Core and Critical Race Theory (CTR), school shootings and safety, battles over school choice and voucher programs, teacher activism about …

Addressing Healthcare Disparities Faced By Aging Down Syndrome Populations, Rhea Mistry
Pitzer Senior Theses
Down syndrome (DS) is a chromosomal genetic condition that impacts the development of the body and brain. The life expectancy of individuals with DS has drastically improved over the decades, increasing from 9 years in 1929 to 25 years in 1983 and further reaching 60 years by 2002. Individuals with DS face a variety of prominent co-occurring health conditions that are subject to change over time, including cognitive, visual, and hearing impairments, sleep apnea, cardiovascular defects, Down syndrome regression disorder, and dementia. Despite this increase in life span, DS is still most familiar to pediatric care providers, resulting in healthcare …

Extracting Social Network Model Parameters From Social Science Literature, Isaac Batts
Theses and Dissertations--Computer Science
When looking at computer modeling of social situations, much of the social science literature does not include ready-to-use statistics or parameters to be included in a social model. I explore studies related to speaking about racism (and other forms of bias), and interventions designed to diminish the occurrence of biased behavior, and use those readings to synthesize plausible parameters for a social computer model.

Hesychasm And The Jesus Prayer: Spiritual Formation In An Ecumenical World – Exploring The Practice Of The Eastern Orthodox Jesus Prayer With The Evangelical Protestant Tradition, Craig Francis Bosman
Theses
The question that forms the heart of this research is: “Can the Jesus Prayer establish roots to develop and flourish, and be accepted as a new, legitimate practice in Evangelicalism?” To begin answering, the practice will be explored within its Eastern Orthodox context focusing on the Jesus Prayers’ biblical roots, early development, and official acceptance within Orthodoxy. Then the Evangelical movement will be surveyed to gain an understanding of its identity from a sociological and theological perspective with special attention on its soteriological framework, customary spiritual disciplines, and general attitudes toward mysticism (defined as direct experience of God through apophatic, …
The Philosophy Behind The Vatican's Approach To Relations With China, John Ogilvie
The Philosophy Behind The Vatican's Approach To Relations With China, John Ogilvie
Theses
The Vatican has always played a significant role in global politics, and it continues to do so in the contemporary World. The Vatican’s relations with the People’s Republic of China (PRC) have drawn considerable attention in recent years, especially following the signing of the 2018 Vatican-China Agreement. Some scholars and commentators suggest that the 2018 Agreement and its terms represent a significant deviation from the norm in Vatican diplomacy. In light of that controversy, the present thesis provides an introductory examination of the philosophy that possibly guides the Vatican’s relations with the PRC and the implications this holds for an …

CULTURAL CONNECTEDNESS AND NATIVE AMERICAN MENTAL HEALTH SHARYN W. HILLIN EDUCATIONAL STUDIES IN DIVERSE POPULATIONS ABSTRACT Recent research has indicated a possible connection between the destruction of Native American culture and communities and mental health disparities among Native Americans in the United States. While numerous studies have been conducted among Native Americans in western regions of the United States that establish a relationship between cultural connectedness and mental health resiliency, no such relationship has been investigated in the southeastern region of the United States, particularly within the state of Alabama. Using a blended ethnographic phenomenological methodology, ten Poarch-Creek Indians in …

Qualitative Family Research: Innovative, Flexible, Theoretical, Reflexive, Abbie E. Goldberg, Katherine R. Allen
Psychology
Qualitative research is increasingly part of the methodological repertoire of scholars who study families. In this article, we examine contemporary trends, tensions, and possibilities for the interdisciplinary enterprise of qualitative research on and about families. We situate our collaborative approach as critical family scholars who pursue social justice work. We then examine four trends that have recently emerged or evolved in qualitative family research. First, we address methodological innovations associated with the pervasive emergence of online technologies and their possibilities for enhanced sample selection, data collection, and data analysis. Second, we address the potential for qualitative methodological orthodoxy to become …

LGBTIQ+ research acknowledges shared experiences of groups marginalized due to gender identities, sexualities, and sex characteristics. This universalist coalition approach has resulted in much affirmational research and progressive policy development. However, it risks homogenizing the unique experiences and needs of specific groups; a risk lessened by a particularist subgroup approach. In this theoretical paper, we reflect on the challenges of a coalition or subgroup approach by considering interdependencies and boundaries between sex, gender, and sexuality-based identities. Through tracing the historical development of LGBTIQ+ research and activism and using examples from intersex studies, intersectionality, and political actions, we explore tensions between …

NAKHARA (Journal of Environmental Design and Planning)
Many national governments have adopted the Sister City collaboration model as a strategy for regional urban development, aiming to promote international collaboration and enhance urban growth at the provincial level. However, in countries with decentralized governance, the effectiveness of this model is often compromised, often resulting in limited outcomes and impacts. Drawing upon cases in Thailand, this study investigates the implementation dynamics and obstacles faced by provincial administrations and suggests practical remedies. Employing a qualitative methodology, the study analyzes a dataset of literature reviews, content analyses, surveys, and in-depth interviews. According to our research, there are 90 sister city agreements …
