Mapping The Ferment: Mediated Communication Research In Cios-Indexed Journals From 1970-2020, David J. Atkin, Kenneth A. Lachlan, Timothy D. Stephen, Carolyn Lagoe
Journal of the Association for Communication Administration
This study profiles scholarly publishing in the domain of mediated communication, based on an analysis of media-themed communication journals—as indexed in the CIOS’s ComAbstracts database—from 1970–2020. Analysis of 22,300 articles from media-themed scholarly journals paints a portrait of scholarly publishing configurations across the domains of Journalism and Communication. Criterion articles were subjected to cluster analysis that yielded a comprehensive unified field portrait of interlinkages among topical pairings encompassing 58 topical categories. Results suggest that just 7 of our 37 criterion journal outlets date to the 1970s, 6 additional titles were launched in the 1980s, 10 more in the 1990s, and …

Terminological (In)Justice: Terminology And Reality In A Coordinated Community Response To Intimate Partner Violence, Julio Montanez Ma, Amy Donley Phd
Institute for Social and Behavioral Science (ISBS)
Definitions and terminologies are paramount for operationalizing the community-wide effort against intimate partner violence (IPV). However, definitions and terms that do not reflect reality are of little use. This is particularly true in IPV coordinated community responses that attempt to harmonize data collection and legal apparatuses at the federal, state, and local levels. Using qualitative (e.g., focus group and interview data from survivors, interviews with system actors) and quantitative data (e.g., Uniform Crime Reports) from a year-long study in a large southeastern county, the current study aims to answer the following research question: Do IPV-related terms (in data collection and …

Reformatting The Performing Arts : Wayang Climen As A Tradition-Based Entertainment Solution For Urban Audiences In Yogyakarta, Hanggar Budi Prasetya, Hariyanto Hariyanto, Bayu Aji Nugraha, Yuniar Galuh Larasati, Marti Fauziah Ariastuti
Journal of Urban Culture Research
The reformulation of Wayang performances into Wayang Climen has provided a fresh avenue for urban audiences to access tradition-based entertainment, which plays a crucial role in the transmission of cultural knowledge and values. After limited performance opportunities due to COVID-19 restrictions, puppeteers are now vying to put on elaborate performances. However, such performances are often expensive, space-intensive, and lengthy, making them inaccessible for urban communities with restricted resources. This study explores how puppeteers have reimagined performances by streamlining their duration, reducing venue requirements, and narrowing thematic focus to retain the essence of traditional Wayang while making it accessible to urban …
Legalization, Medical Exemptions, And Decriminalization Of Marijuana Laws. An Exploratory Study Of Campus Police Officers’ Perceptions And Policing Practices In Response To New Marijuana Laws, Eric Kulberg
Doctoral Dissertations
This dissertation is an exploratory study of how campus police officers perceive and respond to the changes in marijuana laws. It focuses on campus police departments in states that have passed marijuana laws that fit into one of three categories of laws: – the legalization of marijuana, a medical exception to the use of marijuana, and the decriminalization of marijuana for possession of small amounts. Because of its exploratory nature, this research focuses on campus police departments at each state’s flagship institutions that have passed legislation that fits into one of the three categories of laws. Lipsky’s theory of street-level …
Who Is "Women's Health" For? Lgbtq+ Inclusion In Sexual And Reproductive Health Care, Evan Thomas England
Who Is "Women's Health" For? Lgbtq+ Inclusion In Sexual And Reproductive Health Care, Evan Thomas England
Doctoral Dissertations
Throughout modern Western history, access to fully affirming and supportive sexual and reproductive health care (SRH) has been denied to most women and sexual and gender minorities. Also, as demonstrated by the ubiquity of the term “women’s health,” SRH often reflects a cisgender heterosexual (cishet) women-centered approach, alienating transgender, non-binary, gender nonconforming, and sexual minority individuals who are not cishet women but are in equal need of the same life-saving screenings, treatments, and counseling services. Due to the operationalization and reproduction of gendered ideologies and unequal social hierarchies within SRH, inadequate access to quality sexual health education for youth, and …

An Exploration Of The Depictions Of Queerness In Yuri!!! On Ice, Kenneth Broughton
Honors Theses
This thesis examines the show Yuri!!! On Ice, specifically its portrayal of gay men. It 1) explores the themes present in the work, with a focus on the depiction of queerness as a transformative force, 2) examines the audience’s opinion of the work via content analysis, and 3) discusses the representation of queer people within the work. The representation of gay men in the show is discussed within the larger framework of Western media, and I also provide context from histories of queer representation in both America and Japan, review common trope usage (both within the story and in Western …
Extending The Prediction Of Fear Of Crime, Doreen Boateng
Extending The Prediction Of Fear Of Crime, Doreen Boateng
Theses
This study aims to expand what we know about fear of crime to reveal the different levels of fear among genders. Although there exists extensive research on the subject matter, the current work examines how different each gender perceives crime given the predictors as vulnerability, disorder and social integration. This study therefore addresses these gaps by assessing gender differences in crime fear and how these models separately influence each gender. To do that, crosstabulations and logistic regression analysis was used in analyzing the relationship between gender, perceptions of neighborhood disorder (street graffiti/litter), social integration (family ties), to determine the relationship …

Critical Reading Pedagogical Approaches To College Literature In A Post-Pandemic, Mckenzie London
Critical Reading Pedagogical Approaches To College Literature In A Post-Pandemic, Mckenzie London
Theses
This project uses a mixed methods approach to study the impact of COVID-19 on faculty and students in the English college classroom. Research indicates that COVID-19 correlates with changes in students’ academic performance, but there is a need for research concerning how to approach these changes in the English classroom through critical reading practices. “Critical reading” is complex to define and even more challenging to exemplify or illustrate. Critical reading practices are often the center of the college English classroom, but with changing technology and a cultural shift from COVID-19, students now approach critical reading differently. The purpose of this …

Cybersecurity Awareness And Risks Among Students, Staff & Faculty At The University Of North Alabama, Jerry Lwamba
Theses
As individuals and organizations become significantly connected to the internet, cybercriminals find an increasing number of ways to exploit their targets (Broadhurst, 2018). This study explores the world of cybersecurity awareness of risks associated with online activities within the University of North Alabama (UNA). This research aims to assess the level of cybersecurity awareness of risks university stakeholders face, and to also understand behaviors that expose them to cybercrime and emphasize the urge for comprehensive cybersecurity best practices. When cybercriminals employ tactics such as spam, phishing, or spear phishing in their attempts to break into network systems, distribute malware, or …

A Review Of The Hierarchy Of Plithogenic, Neutrosophic, And Fuzzy Graphs: Survey And Applications, Takaaki Fujita, Florentin Smarandache
Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications
As many readers may know, graph theory is a fundamental branch of mathematics that examines networks consisting of nodes and edges, with a focus on their paths, structures, and properties [157]. A Fuzzy Graph extends this concept by assigning a membership degree between 0 and 1 to each edge and vertex, capturing the level of uncertainty. Expanding on this idea, the Turiyam Neutrosophic Graph was introduced as an extension of both Neutrosophic and Fuzzy Graphs. Plithogenic graphs, in turn, offer a powerful approach for managing uncertainty. In this paper, we explore the relationships among various graph classes, including Plithogenic graphs, …
Past, Prologue, And Constitutional Limits On Criminal Penalties, Maria Hawilo, Laura Nirider
Past, Prologue, And Constitutional Limits On Criminal Penalties, Maria Hawilo, Laura Nirider
Journal of Criminal Law and Criminology
Most criminal prosecutions occur at a level that is both neglected by many legal scholars and central to the lives of most people entangled in the criminal legal system: the level of the state. State v. Citizen prosecutions, which encompass most crimes ranging from robbery to homicide, are governed both by the federal constitution and by the constitution of the prosecuting state.
This is no less true for sentences than for prosecutions. When it comes to sentences, state courts are bound by the Eighth Amendment to the United States Constitution, which famously proclaims that no American shall be subjected to …
Abolition Of What?, Christopher Lewis, Adaner Usmani
Abolition Of What?, Christopher Lewis, Adaner Usmani
Journal of Criminal Law and Criminology
This Article defends a structural theory of the brutality of the carceral state. We argue that American penal systems are destined to be inhumane, barring sweeping changes to the social and economic order of the United States; and that prison and police abolition are neither sufficient nor necessary to bring these kinds of changes about.
This theory stands on two premises. First, we defend The Principle of Less Eligibility, which holds that it is politically infeasible for capitalist democracies to permit the incentives to defy the law to exceed those to obey it. As we show, the Principle of Less …
Beyond Bars: Exploring Alternative Possibilities To Address Sexual And Gender Based Violence, Rachel Ensign Habliston
Beyond Bars: Exploring Alternative Possibilities To Address Sexual And Gender Based Violence, Rachel Ensign Habliston
Journal of Criminal Law and Criminology
Many people agree that the United States carceral system is flawed. However, it can be difficult to discuss alternative ways to address violence that do not involve incarceration. Aside from the carceral system, there are other pathways to accountability and healing. Exploring these pathways for perpetrators of heinous crimes, such as sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV), is an overwhelming and under-reviewed endeavor. This Comment seeks to broaden perspectives about how society can hold people accountable for committing acts of SGBV by surveying progressive prosecution, restorative justice, and transformative justice as potential alternatives to the current carceral system. Part I provides …
Categorical Declinations & Democracy, Brenner M. Fissell
Categorical Declinations & Democracy, Brenner M. Fissell
Journal of Criminal Law and Criminology
The most contentious action taken by reform prosecutors has been the issuance of categorical declination policies. Opponents decry this as bureaucratic nullification of democratically enacted offenses, while the prosecutors themselves counter that they are responding to the will of their local electorate. Democracy claims, it appears, have taken center stage in this debate, and they are deployed by both sides. How should we think about democracy and categorical declinations? The most comprehensive scholarly work on this subject is a 2021 article by Professor Kerrel Murray. In this essay, I hope to continue the work begun by Murray, offering additional insights …
Neighborhood Deprivation And Risk Of Readmission Among Young Patients With Ami: Insights From The Virgo Study, Xiaoya Sun
Public Health Theses
Background: Acute myocardial infarction (AMI) is a leading cause of deaths in women younger than 55 years old. However, current knowledge is limited on how neighborhood deprivation influences the risk of AMI readmission in this population. We evaluated the associations of area deprivation index (ADI) on the risk of readmission 1-year post-AMI in young adults with AMI. Methods: We use data from the VIRGO (Variation in Recovery: Role of Gender on Outcomes of Young AMI Patients) study- the largest study of young patients with AMI in the US. Neighborhood deprivation was assessed using an ADI score, which was calculated using …
Health Consequences Of Racial Disparity In Access To Abortion: A Systematic Review, Lacy M. Frye, Calvin Odhiambo
Health Consequences Of Racial Disparity In Access To Abortion: A Systematic Review, Lacy M. Frye, Calvin Odhiambo
University of South Carolina Upstate Student Research Journal
Prior to the 2022 Dobbs decision, Black women already experienced negative maternal health outcomes at an alarmingly disparate rate in comparison to White women. Given that the Dobbs decision emboldens state power to enforce abortion restrictions or protections, there has been significant strides made in both directions. Nonetheless, within states where reproductive rights have been significantly eroded, the heightened abortion restrictions may compound the limited access that Black women previously had before Dobbs. This, in turn will exacerbate the already disparate negative maternal outcomes that Black women experience. However, research on the relationship between the lack of access to abortion …

Multifaceted Challenges And Opportunities: Concurrent Mixed Methods Research To Investigate Chinese Exchange Students' Experiences In The Us Transnational Online Learning Ecology, Xinyue Ren, Yi Zhou
STEMPS Faculty Publications
Transnational online education has become an emerging trend in promoting academic collaboration and exchange in higher education during and after the pandemic. Guided by the learning ecology framework, we conducted concurrent mixed methods research by distributing an online survey to Chinese students (N=51) to collect quantitative and qualitative data. This helped us deeply understand their experiences and perceptions of a cross-cultural online learning environment in the United States. We applied multiple regression and thematic analysis to analyze the data. The merging of both types of data analysis indicated the confirmation of the importance of discipline-based English learning environments, the transformation …

The Influence Of Virtual Anchor Live Streaming On Chinese Consumer Responses, Pik Shan Chan
The Influence Of Virtual Anchor Live Streaming On Chinese Consumer Responses, Pik Shan Chan
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
In the context of China's e-commerce live-streaming industry, this study explores the influence of consumer ethnocentrism (CET) and cosmopolitanism (COS) on perceptions of virtual anchors, using the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) to examine the effects on perceived usefulness (PU), perceived ease of use (PEOU), and perceived enjoyment (PE), which ultimately shape consumer behavioral responses (CBR). A quantitative survey was conducted with 204 participants who had prior experience watching live streams on Chinese e-commerce platforms. Using structural equation modeling (SEM), the study found that CET positively impacts PU (β=0.766), PEOU (β=0.899), and PE (β=0.511), while COS positively influences PU (β=0.593), PEOU …

Upstream Lawyering: A Framework For Poverty Law, Kate Mitchell
Faculty Publications & Other Works
This Article introduces an upstream lawyering framework within the context of the history of poverty law and impact lawyering. While there have been several theories promoting systems change work, the upstream framework, stemming from public health theories and championed by medical-legal partnerships, offers a model for promoting and informing systemic policy. Using the public health concept of upstreaming, this Article explores lawyering practices that can be utilized to address the root causes of social and legal drivers of health inequity, poverty, and oppression. Part I of this Article provides a refreshed overview of the history of poverty law and civil …

Framing Femininity: Opportunities For Gender Non-Conformity At U.S. Women's Colleges At The Turn Of The Twentieth Century, Natté Fortier
Undergraduate Research Awards
Cross-dressing and same-sex attractions were common occurrences at historically women’s colleges (HWCs) in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, when the majority of these institutions came into their own. When examining typical characteristics of HWC campus cultures in their formative years, one might be surprised to see misalignment between common and accepted behaviors by college women versus outside social expectations for women of their class and time period. Thus we might ask: what unique opportunities existed in the early era of HWCs that permitted students to transcend elite patriarchal expectations for gender and femininity? This paper aims to explore …

Exploring African American Female Students' Choice Of Stem Major At Rust College, Shatara Hall
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In comparison to the rest of the United States population, African American women are undeniably inadequately represented in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). As one of the oldest historically black colleges in Mississippi, Rust College has the social responsibility to increase the presence and contributions of minorities in STEM. Since the enrollment of African American females is greater than that of African American males at Rust College, the college has the fortuity to assist in increasing the diversity in STEM for both race and gender. This DIP utilizes Intersectionality Theory as the conceptual foundation to explore …
