Examining Effects Of Perceived Discrimination And Loneliness On Overall Health Outcomes In Black Americans, Apoorva Saravanan Jan 2024

Examining Effects Of Perceived Discrimination And Loneliness On Overall Health Outcomes In Black Americans, Apoorva Saravanan

AUCTUS: The Journal of Undergraduate Research and Creative Scholarship

On average, Black Americans suffer more from a wide range of diseases when compared to White Americans. The national mortality rate for Black Americans is also 24% higher than their White counterparts. Although there are multiple factors contributing to such disparities, one line of research provides strong evidence that negative health outcomes are more likely to occur in Black Americans who experience racial discrimination than those who experience no discrimination. A separate line of research also provides evidence that loneliness is a major health risk factor. In fact, prior research indicates that the experience of discrimination and loneliness are both …

Art & Oppression: “Thin Blue Line”, Kade Mcgrail Jan 2024

Art & Oppression: “Thin Blue Line”, Kade Mcgrail

AUCTUS: The Journal of Undergraduate Research and Creative Scholarship

In 2005, a sculpture titled “Thin Blue Line” was installed on the side of Richmond’s new Police Department Headquarters. The piece is made of metal bands woven together to resemble a giant face that looms a story above the road below it. Considering Richmond’s past use of public art as expressions of power, alongside the political evolution of the term “thin blue line,” this article seeks to deconstruct what this work conveys to its community and how it is received by its community. The aesthetic tradition both the piece and the artist evoke is Italian Futurism—a movement proven to be …

Turning Inward: Students’ Experiences With Mindful Anti-Oppressive Pedagogy In Higher Education, Rachael E. Horn Langford Jan 2024

Turning Inward: Students’ Experiences With Mindful Anti-Oppressive Pedagogy In Higher Education, Rachael E. Horn Langford

CGU Theses & Dissertations

In the past 15-20 years, contemplative practices, designed to cultivate present-moment awareness, have become more common in K-12 educational settings with some growth in higher education contexts seeking to reorient around teaching the “whole student”. In response to calls that have also emerged in higher education to advance social justice aims, this multimethod study examines the role of mindfulness in an undergraduate sociology of body course taught from an anti-oppression education lens. This study fills the gap in the existing literature by exploring a deeper understanding of experiences with mindfulness in higher education from the lens and language of students. …

The Influence Of Religion In Frantz Fanon’S Decolonial Theory And Ethics On Violence, Dorival Pimenta Do Nascimento Jan 2024

The Influence Of Religion In Frantz Fanon’S Decolonial Theory And Ethics On Violence, Dorival Pimenta Do Nascimento

CGU Theses & Dissertations

How does religious language influence Frantz Fanon’s Decolonial theory and ethics onviolence in the struggle for decolonization and disalienation? This is the question I address in this dissertation carefully observing Patrick Crowley's mention of the presence of religious language in Fanon's work. Crowley’s argument is that Fanon’s thought is apocalyptical in structure and is marked by a dramatic sense of temporality prior to his arrival in Algeria. Crowley develops his article focusing on the messianic question, while the religious language in Fanon's work he ends up relegating to a second plan. In this sense, this dissertation is developed with the …

Examining Factors Related To Access To Rigorous High School Physics For Black Males: Evidence From The High School Longitudinal Study Of 2009, Jennifer Dacosta

CGU Theses & Dissertations

In the landscape of American education, Black male students face significant barriers in accessing advanced science courses, a challenge that underscores broader issues of equity and inclusion. This study investigated the factors influencing Black male high school students’ access to earn physics credits, focusing on the interplay between school offerings, academic prerequisites, counselor support, personal efficacy in science, and socioeconomic status. Through a detailed analysis of data from the High School Longitudinal Study of 2009, the research adopted a quantitative approach to examine how these variables collectively impact the educational trajectory of these students through multiple regression models which produced …

Culture And Community: The Importance Of Black Spaces In Community Colleges, La Quirshia Fennell Jan 2024

Culture And Community: The Importance Of Black Spaces In Community Colleges, La Quirshia Fennell

CGU Theses & Dissertations

At present, California community colleges serve a large proportion of Black students, but these students are not adequately supported to reach their educational goals (The Campaign for College Opportunity, 2019; National Student Clearinghouse Research Center, 2022; Cross & Carman, 2022 Simpson, J., & Bista, K., 2021). Extensive research documents the importance of culturally engaging campuses and student sense of belonging to academic success (Museus, 2014; Museus et al., 2017; Harper et al., 2009; Strayhorn et al., 2010; Sanders, 2016; Tichavakunda, 2020). A puzzle remains in understanding why these aspects of campus support may be falling short for Black students. I …

Esther And The Maccabees: The Creation Of A Hellenist Jewish Heroine, Nolan Lebovitz Jan 2024

Esther And The Maccabees: The Creation Of A Hellenist Jewish Heroine, Nolan Lebovitz

CGU Theses & Dissertations

The Book of Esther maintains many enigmatic qualities when compared against the other books within the canon of the Hebrew Bible. These unique characteristics stretch through its characters, its developed literary style, and the ideology it espouses. Academics often address individual issues in isolation such as its various scriptural forms in Greek and Hebrew, its absence from Qumran, and the many factors considered in its authorship and dating. Scholarly consideration for the book’s authorship spans from the 5 th Century through the 2nd Century BCE. This period in question saw a transition between the Persian Period to the Hellenistic Period, …

Richard Wright, Native Son, And The Rhetorical Framing Of The Black American Experience, Malcolm Oliver Ii Jan 2024

Richard Wright, Native Son, And The Rhetorical Framing Of The Black American Experience, Malcolm Oliver Ii

CGU Theses & Dissertations

This dissertation is an exploration into Richard Wright’s rhetorical framing of the black American experience to further understand the impact and influence of language on black Americans within the progression of society. If we revisit 20 th century black American protest literature with a critical view through the lens of Perceivable Rhetoric, my original contribution to the field, we can further understand the messaging and implications within the genre that help us understand why the 21 st century black American experience mirrors much of what was written during the 20 th century. With respect to the aforementioned, Native Son, the …

“A Real Man . . .”: Deconstructing Machismo Heteronormative Standards With K–12 Latino Male Educators Through Dialogic Spaces, Mario Echeverria Jan 2024

“A Real Man . . .”: Deconstructing Machismo Heteronormative Standards With K–12 Latino Male Educators Through Dialogic Spaces, Mario Echeverria

Dissertations

In a K–12 educational landscape where 75% of educators are white women, recruitment of Latino male educators is crucial for diversification, yet these educators represent just 2% of the teaching workforce in the United States (NCES, 2020). These educators grapple with a layered sense of identity as they navigate expectations of hegemonic masculinity and machismo norms that dictate their roles as disciplinarians and saviors, especially for young boys of color (Brockenbrough, 2018; Lara & Fránquiz, 2015; Martino & Kehler, 2006; Mills et al., 2004; Singh, 2021). Unfortunately, Latino male educators leave the profession at twice the rate of their Latina …

Examining Systemic And Dispositional Factors Impacting Historically Disenfranchised Schools Across North Carolina, Raketa Ouedraogo-Thomas Jan 2024

Examining Systemic And Dispositional Factors Impacting Historically Disenfranchised Schools Across North Carolina, Raketa Ouedraogo-Thomas

Dissertations

This mixed method sequential explanatory study provided analysis of North Carolina (NC) school leaders’ dispositions in eliminating opportunity gaps, outlined in NC’s strategic plan. The study’s quantitative phase used descriptive and correlation analysis of eight Likert subscales around four tenets of transformative leadership (Shields, 2011) and aspects of critical race theory (Bell, 1992; Ladson-Billings, 1998; Ladson-Billings & Tate, 2006) to understand systemic inequities and leadership attitudes.

The qualitative phase comprised three analyses of education leadership dispositions and systemic factors in NC schools. The first analysis of State Board of Education meeting minutes from 2018–2023 quantified and analyzed utterances of racism …

‘The More Empowered I Feel, The More Vulnerable I Become’: Exploring The Entanglements Of Human Rights Education (Hre), Legal Discourses And Notions Of Agency And Vulnerability Amongst Human Rights Educators In Colombia, Claudia Blandon Jan 2024

‘The More Empowered I Feel, The More Vulnerable I Become’: Exploring The Entanglements Of Human Rights Education (Hre), Legal Discourses And Notions Of Agency And Vulnerability Amongst Human Rights Educators In Colombia, Claudia Blandon

School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences Theses

In the 21st century, notions of human rights are symbols of dignity, freedom, and equality (UNDHR, 1948) and equated with notions of empowerment. Simultaneously, in an epoch of recurrent waves of displacement, international instruments of protection are failing to safeguard displaced people and those who provide sanctuary. By the end of 2022, 104 million people had been forcibly displaced globally because of conflict and human rights violations (UNHCR, 2023). Against this global backdrop, empowering women through human rights education and legal discourses has become a priority, (Bajaj et al., 2017, Altinova et al., 2019). With a firm conviction that the …

The Statutory Assessment Of Children And Young People With Special Educational Needs: A Bourdieusian Analysis, Blanche Gibson Jan 2024

The Statutory Assessment Of Children And Young People With Special Educational Needs: A Bourdieusian Analysis, Blanche Gibson

School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences Theses

Research since the Children and Families Act (2014) and the SEND Code of Practice 0-25 (DfE & DoH, 2015) has focused upon new processes for statutory assessment, the quality of Education, Health and Care plans and the success and/or failures of the bureaucratic systems put in place to administer these. This research uses the thinking tools of the French sociologist Pierre Bourdieu (1930 - 2002), to consider how statutory assessment is perceived within the field of SEND. A conceptual framework, influenced by Bourdieu’s field theory (1984) and Crossley’s social movement fields (2003), is employed to examine participants responses to questions …

The Sense Of Safety Theoretical Framework: A Trauma-Informed And Healing-Oriented Approach For Whole Person Care, Kurt C. Stange

Faculty Scholarship

Objectives: This research describes four aspects of the development of the Sense of Safety Theoretical Framework for whole person care: exploring the meaning of the phrase “sense of safety”—the whole person language; the range of human experience that impacts sense of safety—whole person scope; the dynamics that build sense of safety—the healing goals; and the personal and cross-disciplinary trauma-informed practitioner skills and attitudes that facilitate sense of safety. Methods: This qualitative participatory study was conducted in two phases. Researchers iteratively explored the concept of sense of safety using focus groups and semi-structured interviews. Overarching research questions were: “Does the transdisciplinary …

“I’M Not The Girl I Was…”, Donald K. Freedheim

Faculty Scholarship

My wife has Alzheimer’s. That might not be the precise diagnosis, but her symptoms are practically textbook for it. On a seven-stage scale of the disease, she would be in the latter part of the 5th and early 6th Stage. I have been asked by a number of colleagues to write down what has been happening to Gerda; but up until now, it was too painful and personal to record. I also believed that so much useful information has been written and published that there was no need to add to the literature. But when Gerda said the words I …

Trauma As Cultural Capital: A Critical Feminist Theory Of Trauma Discourse, Lucy Britt, Wilson H. Hammett Jan 2024

Trauma As Cultural Capital: A Critical Feminist Theory Of Trauma Discourse, Lucy Britt, Wilson H. Hammett

All Faculty Scholarship

This essay theorizes a problem for feminism posed by a particular form of trauma discourse. Feminists have played an important role in developing cultural and clinical conceptions of trauma, but one result of the destigmatization of trauma has been that trauma discourse is sometimes used as a form of cultural capital to reinforce existing hierarchies. In a novel application of Pierre Bourdieu's theory of distinction, we show how, when instrumentalized as cultural capital, trauma discourse can be used to reinforce patriarchy and other systems of oppression. We trace a critical feminist history of the struggle to understand and treat trauma. …

Bridging And Breaking Silos: Transformational Governance Of The Migration–Sustainability Nexus, Caroline Zickgraf, Dominique Jolivet, Claudia Fry, Emily Boyd, Anita Fabos Jan 2024

Bridging And Breaking Silos: Transformational Governance Of The Migration–Sustainability Nexus, Caroline Zickgraf, Dominique Jolivet, Claudia Fry, Emily Boyd, Anita Fabos

Sustainability and Social Justice

Sustainability and migration are typically treated as discrete policy spheres in inter-national, national, and local fora, separated in governance structures and institutions. This results in policy incoherence that hinders just transitions toward more sustainable societies cognizant of mobile realities. This explorative effort identifies the (dis)connec-tions between policy domains using data collected on how the sustainability–migration nexus is governed in four countries with a special emphasis on urban areas: Belgium, the Netherlands, Sweden, and the United States. Results of 73 interviews show that migration and sustainability actors find it challenging to see how they could be working together and that migrants …

The Need For More Inclusive Deliberation On Ethics And Governance In Agricultural And Food Biotechnology, Catherine Kendig, Theresa Selfa, Paul B. Thompson, Raymond Anthony, Wenda Bauchspies, Gwendolyn Blue, Ashmita Das, Rebecca Harrison, Chris Henke, Shan Jin, Jennifer Kuzma, Forbes Lipschitz, Kurt Lichter, Morgan Ruelle, Timothy Silberg, Bruno Takahashi

Sustainability and Social Justice

An inclusive and socially legitimate governance structure is absent to address concerns over new agricultural biotechnologies. Establishing an agricultural bioethics commission devoted to inclusive deliberation on ethics and governance in agricultural and food biotechnology is urgent. Highlighting the social and ethical dimensions of current agricultural bioengineering disputes in the food system, we discuss how a nationally recognized policy forum could improve decision-making and increase public understanding of the issues. We clarify ways the concepts that are used to categorize food and frame governance of food affect consumer choices, and how dissemination of information and the mode of dissemination can contribute …

Unwritten Ground Rules Of School Choice: Excavating Capital As A Regulator Of Access To Educational Goods, Jason E. Saltmarsh Jan 2024

Unwritten Ground Rules Of School Choice: Excavating Capital As A Regulator Of Access To Educational Goods, Jason E. Saltmarsh

Educational Leadership & Workforce Development Faculty Publications

District leaders in school choice contexts tend to overlook the many hidden costs of selecting schools in terms of mobility, time, liquidity, and labor. Meanwhile, a body of literature on school choice policies and cultural, social, and political capital shows that middle-class parents use the resources they possess to get the school access they want. In this study, I critically examine the complex interplay between school choice policies and forms of capital. This analysis extends our empirical understanding of the political dimensions of families’ school choices—the way parent resources, relationships, and strategies determine “who gets what, when, and how” (Laswell, …

Social Media Sanctuaries: A Discourse Analysis Of Indian International Students' Agency And Liminality During The Russian-Ukrainian Conflict, Bhavika Sicka, Nadiya Ungo, Dennis Gregory

Educational Leadership & Workforce Development Faculty Publications

This study used a social media discourse analysis approach to illuminate the narratives of Indian international students in Ukraine who experienced displacement and upheaval because of the Russo-Ukrainian war. We used agency and liminality as analytic lenses to highlight how this uniquely situated population used Facebook to navigate conflict, voice their demands, support each other, challenge hegemonic narratives, re/construct their diasporic identities, and re-orient their futures. Findings indicate that Indian international students in Ukraine displayed insurmountable courage and resilience during the war, enacting agency from the margins to amplify their voices and actuate desired futures. Furthermore, South Asian students in …

Valence Matters: An Exploration Of Small And Large Value Extra Credit Assignments To Incentivize College Students, Angela J. Murphy, Holger Amort

Journal of Business, Industry, and Economics

Extra credit homework can be a supplemental pathway for professors to reinforce course content and encourage students to engage in co-curricular activities (e.g., career fairs). For extra credit to be effectual, it must have valence or be attractive to the intended audience (Vroom 1964). This paper explored the valence of extra credit through two distinct assignments—one small value and the other large. Students could earn up to five bonus points or a late pass as a reward for completing an extra credit assignment. The authors expected 20% would select a late pass, but only 2% did. There was a second …

The war between Russia and Ukraine has been a topic of interest for scholars and policymakers worldwide. Western countries have condemned and imposed sanctions on Russia, while countries in the Global South have taken varying positions. In this Forum, we will analyse the origins of the war and the responses to it of key countries in the Global South, including China, India, Brazil, South Africa, and Iran. The war has multiple causes, and identifying them has implications for understanding what is necessary to regain peace. However, reaching a consensus on its causes will not be easy. Translanguaging Through Experiencing: The Lived Experiences Of Multilingual Learners Studying Chinese, Jiangping Cai

Open Access Dissertations

Although the United States has a population with diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds, multilingual education has been greatly influenced by monolingual and raciolinguistic ideologies (Flores & Rosa, 2019; García, 2014; Ruiz, 1984). With world language enrollment continuing to decline (Lusin et al., 2023), investigation of the lived experiences of diverse groups of multilingual learners (MLLs) would help to understand language learning from a sociocultural perspective, and better support multilingual education and planning. The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the Chinese learning experiences of native English multilingual students studying Chinese at a U.S. public university language program. The …

Sport injuries continue to be unavoidable disruptions in student-athletes’ athletic careers with over 200,000 injuries estimated to be reported each year in college sport (Kerr et al., 2015). Researchers continue to emphasize the importance of an interprofessional approach to rehabilitation to help athletes manage the adverse psychological and emotional reactions to injury (Appaneal et al., 2009; Gervis et al., 2020; Putukian, 2016). The purpose of this study was to extend and replicate the research of Clement and Arvinen-Barrow (2021) by incorporating perspectives of Division I US student-athletes. The current study describes 321 NCAA Division I collegiate athletes’ experiences of receiving …

Factors Related To Adolescent Anger In Appalachia: Implications For Violence Prevention, Rosalina Mills Jan 2024

Factors Related To Adolescent Anger In Appalachia: Implications For Violence Prevention, Rosalina Mills

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Background. Adolescent health outcomes are vitally important for public health. One such outcome includes adolescent violence, a persistent and prevalent public health issue in the United States. Adolescent violence in rural areas is particularly understudied and some measures of rural violence are underreported compared to violence metrics in urban areas. A key risk factor for adolescent violence, is anger. By examining known key risk factors for adolescent anger through a primary prevention and socioecological perspective, it may be possible to reduce or prevent downstream violence in adolescence and later adulthood. Identifying specific systemic, environmental, and interpersonal factors related to anger …

The Relationship Between Social Justice Attitudes And Compassion In Preservice Teachers: A Critically Compassionate Intellectualism Framework, Megan Hut Jan 2024

The Relationship Between Social Justice Attitudes And Compassion In Preservice Teachers: A Critically Compassionate Intellectualism Framework, Megan Hut

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This dissertation aims to gain further knowledge about the implementation of the Critically Compassionate Intellectualism (CCI; Cammarota & Romero, 2003) framework in teacher education. This framework, originally developed to provide a better education for Latine students who were being silenced in their original schools, emphasizes authentic caring, critical pedagogy, and social justice content. CCI aims to provide students with an education that better equips them to be part of our democratic society and is supposed to lead to an increase in students’ critical consciousness through developing compassionate relationships and making content related to students’ experiences. Based on the success of …
