How Play-Based Learning Impacts Students With Specific Learning And Social-Emotional Needs, Michaela Mt Duncan
How Play-Based Learning Impacts Students With Specific Learning And Social-Emotional Needs, Michaela Mt Duncan
All Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The study of play-based learning has unique implications for educational settings, children, and families.,In recent years play-based learning in education, especially for students with specific learning and social-emotional needs, has had increasing recognition. Play-based learning provides an approach for students that focuses on not just academic development, but also social skills, emotional regulation, and problem-solving abilities. For students with diverse needs, such as those with learning disabilities or emotional difficulties, play-based learning offers a safe and inclusive environment where they can explore, experiment, and engage with their peers in a meaningful way. Through play, these students can enhance their communication …
Are Parental Nonstandard Work Schedules A Barrier To Their School Involvement?, Kess Ballentine, Alejandra Ros Pilarz
Are Parental Nonstandard Work Schedules A Barrier To Their School Involvement?, Kess Ballentine, Alejandra Ros Pilarz
Social Work Faculty Publications
Parental school involvement is consistently associated with better child development outcomes. Although parental work schedules are expected to shape school involvement, little empirical research examines this relationship. Using nationally representative data from the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study, Kindergarten Cohort 2010-11, (N=6,047), we estimated associations between parents’ work schedules and multiple indicators of school involvement. Compared to daytime schedules, flexible variable schedules were associated with more parental school involvement. Working a regular nonstandard schedule or employer-set variable schedule was not associated with school involvement, except that working nights was associated with attending fewer school events. We found limited evidence of heterogeneity …
How Improving Policies Around Immigrants And Refugees Can Help The Us Economy, Lisa Leedy
How Improving Policies Around Immigrants And Refugees Can Help The Us Economy, Lisa Leedy
Community Engagement Student Work
The United States (US) has been grappling with the issue of immigration for decades. Using mixed research methods, this capstone analyzes the current US immigration policies around work visas in the US, focusing on the challenges faced by employers who wish to sponsor foreign workers. The analysis found that the process of sponsoring a visa worker can take an average of 8.6 months and cost between $7,000 to 15,000, which can be a significant barrier for many employers. Gaps in acceptance of credentialing contribute to the barrier for employers to engage highly skilled foreign workers fully. Additionally, the study found …

Struggling To Recover Or Recovering The Struggle: A Critical Examination Of Recovery Narratives As Discourses-In-Practice For People Suffering From Postpartum Depression, Alanna R. Miller, Alexandru Stana
Communication Studies Faculty Works
Postpartum depression is a prevalent condition, and preliminary data suggest that the COVID-19 pandemic further increased its incidence. Building on scholarship that has shown the value of exploring patients’ narratives for diagnosis and treatment, this study examines narratives of recovery in an online support forum, using theories of narrative identity. An online forum with 64 participants suffering from postpartum depression was analyzed according to grounded theory. A thematic analysis uncovered two dominant narratives: the full recovery or inevitable progress narrative, and the cyclical recovery or struggle as norm narrative. This study illustrates the complicated interaction between medical institutions, recovery narratives, …
Another Lochner Era?, Wilson Huhn
Another Lochner Era?, Wilson Huhn
Duquesne Law Review
Many legal scholars have observed that the current Supreme Court is returning to the doctrines, values, and methods of reasoning that were employed between 1873 and 1937-the Lochner era and the era immediately preceding it.1 As it did during the Lochner era, the current Supreme Court elevates property rights over personal rights;2 strikes down major civil rights legislation;3 arrogates power to itself by ignoring legislative intent and administrative expertise;4 and relies on tradition instead evidence-based reasoning to interpret the law.5

Obstetric Fistulas In Sub-Saharan Africa, Katie Whitcomb
Obstetric Fistulas In Sub-Saharan Africa, Katie Whitcomb
Ballard Brief
An obstetric fistula is a hole in the vaginal canal, either to the bladder or the rectum. It is a childbirth complication caused by obstructed, prolonged labor. Sub-Saharan African mothers are particularly vulnerable to fistulas if they are poor, rural living, or young. Additionally, cultural barriers, distrust of Western health facilities, and birthing traditions play a role in the pervasiveness of obstetric fistulas in modernity. A hole in the bladder or rectum leads to loss of control over urination or defecation. However, there are secondary consequences, such as mental illness and social stigma, that cause just as much suffering as …
Lack Of Access To Quality Education For Rural Indigenous Communities In Chiapas, Mexico, Elizabeth Sanchez
Lack Of Access To Quality Education For Rural Indigenous Communities In Chiapas, Mexico, Elizabeth Sanchez
Ballard Brief
The Mexican state of Chiapas has the highest indigenous population in the country and the least educated population of any state. The confluence of historical government neglect (in infrastructure and politics), gender inequality, language barriers, and low family income of these populations seriously hinders indigenous Chiapanecos from receiving a high-quality education—if any education at all. A history of indigenous marginalization and government unwillingness to recognize and remedy this creates a serious roadblock to any permanent change in indigenous education levels. These low levels of education lead to an increase in reproductive health illiteracy, lower occupational attainment and advancement, and decreased …

Driving Key Partner Engagement By Integrating Community-Engaged Principles Into A Stakeholder Analysis: A Qualitative Study, Casey E. Allen, Emily L. Frankel, Shinobu Watanabe-Galloway, Heidi Keeler, David Palm, Brooke Fitzpatrick, Paul Estabrooks, Keyonna King
Journal Articles: Epidemiology
Introduction: The stakeholder analysis approach has historically been top-down rather than collaborative with key partners. However, this approach poses challenges for key partner engagement and community-engaged research, which aims to incorporate key partners throughout the project. This study, conducted by the Community Engagement Network (CEN) at a Midwest academic medical center, seeks to examine the value of community-engaged research for diverse key partners to increase collaboration, strengthen partnerships, and enhance impact, which will ultimately drive key partner engagement.
Methods: The study involved semi-structured interviews with 38 key partners from diverse groups, including community members, community organizations, Practice-Based Research Network (PBRN) …
Art As Ammunition: The Creative Response To Violence In Ireland, Emma Muchow
Art As Ammunition: The Creative Response To Violence In Ireland, Emma Muchow
Soaring: A Journal of Undergraduate Research
This essay examines the role of murals in Northern Ireland during the Troubles, a period of sectarian violence from 1968 to 1998. It argues that these murals functioned as powerful instruments for both sides of the conflict, serving as a platform to express political ideologies, cultural identities, and lived experiences. The analysis draws upon scholarly works on art and conflict, historical accounts of the Troubles, and examinations of specific murals.
The paper explores the multifaceted role these murals played. It highlights how they served as reflections of the social, political, and cultural tensions of the time. Furthermore, it examines how …

Do We Need Multiple Translations Of The Same Text? I Am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter Analyzed, Candelaria Barrientos Jiménez
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
In 2018, the New York Times Bestseller I Am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter (2017) by the Mexican American poet, novelist and essayist, Erika L. Sánchez was translated into Spanish. Two editions were published: La hija que no soñaste in Mexico and Yo no soy tu perfecta hija mexicana in the United States. Although the paratextual information of each edition differs–that being the title and the brief resources on mental health–the body of the translation is the same. The target audience of each edition lives in a different country which implies understanding different cultural references. This thesis examines the original …

Teaching There...And Back Again: Building A Practice Of Reflective Teaching, Amanda Crego-Emley, Alicia G. Vaandering, Chris Cassaday
Public Services Faculty Presentations
How do you move forward to improve your teaching approaches and pedagogical decisions over time? Research has shown that reflective teaching provides instructors with opportunities to examine their classroom teaching, learning objects, and assessment. This reflection can inspire strategic new approaches, guide changes that improve student learning, and promote a holistic evaluation of instructional practice. For academic library instructors, dedicating time to reflective work can be challenging, but participating in this work as part of an iterative practice, either independently or within a community, can improve accountability, strengthen departmental collaboration, and foster exciting new ideas.

"I’M Not Teaching Them Per Se": Designing And Delivering Asynchronous Undergraduate Online Stem Courses, Regina L. Garza Mitchell, Whitney Decamp, Brian Horvitz, Megan Grunert Kowalske, Cherrelle Singleton
Instruments for Measuring Online Teaching Practices
Although online courses have been a part of academia for nearly 30 years, they are still perceived as “different” than face-to-face instruction. Through in-depth interviews with four instructors, we explored how STEM faculty approach teaching asynchronous online undergraduate STEM courses. The faculty interviewed for this study viewed online courses as “not regular class[es]” and teaching those classes as “not teaching per se.” Each of the instructors had assumptions about what a classroom was and about good instruction, but even for instructors who taught online for multiple years, those assumptions remained grounded in the face-to-face environment. There is a need for …

Developing An Observation Protocol For Online Stem Courses, Brian Horvitz, Whitney Decamp, Regina L. Garza Mitchell, Megan Grunert Kowalske, Cherrelle Singleton
Instruments for Measuring Online Teaching Practices
The use of online instruction for undergraduate STEM courses is growing rapidly. While researchers and practitioners have access to validated instruments for studying the practice of teaching in face-to-face classrooms, analogous tools do not yet exist for online instruction. These tools are needed for quality design and control purposes. To meet this need, this project developed an observational protocol that can be used to collect non-evaluative data for the description, study, and improvement of online, undergraduate STEM courses. The development of this instrument used a sequential exploratory mixed methods approach to the research, design, pilot-testing, refinement and implementation of the …

In Unreasonable: Black Lives, Police Power, and the Fourth Amendment, Devon W. Carbado illuminates how both the spectacular and quotidian forms of racialized terror, brutality, and surveillance—characteristic of enslavement—have shaped the construction of our constitutional order. He argues that the combined social normalization and legal naturalization of racial hierarchy paved the way for the development of slave patrols and other early iterations of policing where incredible acts of violence against Black bodies were made ordinary and essential. He explains how this legacy continues today with Fourth Amendment jurisprudence not simply failing to protect rights but rather licensing police violence …

L’Autobiographie Intellectuelle De V. Y. Mudimbe Et Les Enjeux De La Différence, Justin Bisanswa
Présence Francophone: Revue internationale de langue et de littérature
Based on Les corps glorieux des mots et des êtres. Esquisse d’un jardin africain à la bénédictine, this text would like to analyze, at the confluence of sociology and rhetoric, the modalities (with their variations and their extensions) by which V. Y. Mudimbe broadens intellectual autobiography to other modes of writing and functions as a dialogic space between poetry and prose, experience and fantasy, reality and imagination. Retracing his pathway, Mudimbe makes his text a journey within oneself, a quest for the “absolute elsewhere” or a quest for the total Self. A feeling of lack emerges which explains this …

V.Y. Mudimbe Et La Recherche D’Une Parole Pour-Soi : L’Essai Philosophique Aux Prises Avec L’Autobiographie : Vivre Et Écrire, Kasereka Kavwahirehi
Présence Francophone: Revue internationale de langue et de littérature
This article aims at two closely linked objectives : on the one hand, to show how the philosophical essays of V. Y. Mudimbe carry autobiographical sequences which complete or explain certain passages of his intellectual autobiography (The glorious bodies of words and beings) and, on the other hand, to question the stakes of such a rather singular practice in African philosophy. The basic hypothesis is that this practice is to be understood from an important moment in his intellectual development, namely May 68 and what has been called “La pensée 68” within which two antagonistic tendencies oppose each …

Some people today view free speech as a threat to emotional safety and well-being. Cancel culture attempts to silence authors who express “unapproved” opinions by removing access to their works, publicly shaming them, and making attempts to destroy their livelihood. Cancel culture has been increasing, particularly on social media.
