Sustainability Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, And Threats And Pestel Analysis For Special District Revenue Generation, Toyasha Sebbag

This study addresses the ability of the client organization to create new programming that is separate from its general fund and is revenue-neutral because the client organization is a conservation district operating under the California Water Code Division 21 Sections 74000-76501. The constraint of California Proposition 13’s property tax rate increases makes it difficult for the client organization to fund new programming. To overcome these limitations, the multiple streams framework (MSF) and the s/SWOT and PESTEL frameworks were used to analyze the role of policy entrepreneurs and address potential limitations in the client organization’s creation of new programming, ensuring sustainability …

The Heroine Archetype, Annabelle L. Nelson Oct 2024

The Heroine Archetype, Annabelle L. Nelson

Heroism Science

Theorists and researchers have documented some of the characteristics of heroes which include humility, endurance, courage, vulnerability, perseverance, and the choice to solve societal problems with moral action. These characteristics help a hero complete a journey derived from Campbell’s The Hero with A Thousand Faces. The journey’s cycle begins with a normal state when a call to adventure moves a person to face tests, rely on helpers and transform the self to solve dilemmas. Identifying with a hero as an archetype can activate a psychodynamic and open awareness for insight and emotional strength. Usually, a hero is seen as non-gender …

The numbers of patients in U.S. hospitals experiencing unfavorable, avoidable clinical outcomes continue at an alarming rate despite the development and implementation of patient safety initiatives. Until now, the majority of research into the concept of patient safety employed quantitative method approaches to investigate the possible causes of preventable adverse patient outcomes. There are several possible factors identified from research findings that might impact patient safety: an organization's safety culture, the practice environment of the nurse, and nurse staffing. To date, qualitative exploration of the perspectives of those closest to the patient - …

Optimal care of the community client, including those considered senior or elderly has become a critical consideration of the Canadian health care system. As such, meeting the health needs of the community client, a fundamental role of home care, has been theoretically improved by home cares adoption of an electronic client assessment and information system known as Resident Assessment Instrument Home Care (RAI-HC), one of the many assessment systems within the inter-RAI suite of assessments. Valid and reliable client outcome data and algorithms are generated from a completed RAI-HC, and available to home care and its assessor coordinators to support …

A Peer Support Program For Adolescents With Type 1 Diabetes, Amber A. Fuller

Group: Nebraska Methodist College

Type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1D) is a chronic condition impacting young children and subsequently follows them throughout life. The disease causes the body to lose the ability to produce insulin resulting in elevated blood sugar levels causing a cascade of detrimental complications. As children navigate through the different phases of life, especially during adolescence, the challenges of self-management of this disease can become difficult. In research, peer support programs have shown to be an effective method to approaching this challenge. This quality improvement project focused on the T1D adolescent population and created, implemented, and evaluated a peer support program, called …

The Hierarchical Implication Of Jus Cogens: An Analysis Of Schwarzenberger And Kelsen On The Recognition Of The Prohibition Of Torture And Genocide As Peremptory Norms, Carlos G. Ramaglia Mota

Buffalo Human Rights Law Review

This article explores the challenge faced by positivist schools of law in integrating the concept of jus cogens within their systematic legal frameworks. By comparing the theories of Schwarzenberger and Kelsen, it demonstrates that Positivism is not a monolithic representation of the traditional international regime of consent. Utilizing a doctrinal legal research methodology, the study draws upon authoritative sources, including legal scholarship, case law, and conventions related to the prohibition of torture and genocide. The article traces the origins and development of jus cogens, examining its connections to post-war Germany and Austria, and its universalistic Christian roots. Analyzing doctrinal and …

Former Extremists In North American Research, Ryan Scivens, Steven Windisch, Pete Simi

Sociology Faculty Books and Book Chapters

"In what follows, we explore how researchers studying key issues in terrorism and extremism studies have incorporated formers into their work by tracing current trends in the empirical research in a North American context. First, we examine how those relying on interviews with formers have uncovered a complex web of overlapping push and pull factors that predispose extremist onset. Second, we explore how the use of formers to understand radicalization processes has provided valuable insight that would not have been available through secondary sources. Third, we discuss how formers have better informed our understanding of the processes of leaving extremism. …

Shifting Towards Boilerplate Regulation, Wayne R. Barnes Oct 2024

Shifting Towards Boilerplate Regulation, Wayne R. Barnes

University of Miami Law Review

Consumer assent to standard form contracts has been creating cognitive dissonance among contracts scholars for a century. Businesses impose standard forms on consumers, who never read the terms. But consumers would not understand them if they did. And they don’t have the bargaining power to change them anyway—the terms are famously “take it or leave it.” Contracting is ideally theorized as an act of voluntary, knowing consent to all the terms agreed to. The dissonance is that consumers, although ostensibly signaling their assent to the boilerplate by signing (or clicking, or tapping their phone screen), do not in fact know …

It Is Time To Stop Using The Washington Group Questions To Measure Disability In U.S. Federal Surveys, Scott D. Landes, Bonnielin K. Swenor, Jean P. Hall

Population Health Research Brief Series

Disabled people are a population with health disparities, so accurate data on disability status is required to fully understand and mitigate these disparities. The National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) is the primary survey used to monitor the health of the U.S. population. Currently, the NHIS uses the Washington Group Short Set on Functioning (WGSS) questions to create a disability indicator that can be used to estimate the size of the disabled population and ascertain the severity of a person’s level of functional limitations. This study used data on U.S. adults ages 18+ from the 2010-2018 NHIS to determine how accurately …
