Positioning Paperback Books As Americana: Cultural And Historical Impacts Of The Wadle Pocket Book Collection, Jake Volk

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The first book in the form of a codex was bound around 300 BCE, but the earliest material used to record writing appeared around 3000 BCE. From these documents recording proto-writing of human history, people have sought to analyze and preserve writing, which continues as a contemporary work of scholars across multiple disciplines to form the field of the history of the book. As the book changed physical form from illuminated manuscripts on vellum to cheaply produced, paperback books, which appeared in the early 1800s, historians have documented these changes; however, more analysis is needed to categorize and interpret how …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

In this article, based on ethnographic research conducted in Perth, Western Australia and Madrid, Spain, we consider how community is understood and enacted for Russian-speaking migrants and its role in cultural (re)production. Studies often overlook the important role of struggle, contestation and power relations in everyday practices of community making. Drawing on Bourdieu’s field theory, we describe the Russian-speaking migrant community as a structured social space in which community leaders and migrant institutions compete for the right to represent the community. As a result of power differentials, contested ideas about what Russian-speaking culture is and how it should be transmitted, …

New Insights On Economic Theories Of The Family Firm, James J. Chrisman, Chevy-Hanqing Fang, Silvio Vismara, Zhenyu Wu

Business and Information Technology Faculty Research & Creative Works

Research attention to family firms has significantly increased in recent years, with a growing application of economic theories such as agency theory and resource-based theory to explain differences between family firms and nonfamily firms and heterogeneity among family firm populations. Despite this progress, the formulation of an economic theory of family business remains notably absent. Merely applying existing economic theories of the firm to the realm of family business is inadequate, as these general theories fail to incorporate the idiosyncratic aspects of family firms, such as the pursuit of socioemotional wealth. This paper seeks to advance economic theories specific to …

The Forthcoming General Election In The Republic Of Ireland: Winds Of (Left-Wing) Change Or Plus Ça Change?, Chris O'Ralaigh

Articles

The forthcoming general election will be the most consequential electoral contest for the Republic of Ireland in a century. The polity is situated in truly novel territory with the potential for an historic first: the incoming of a Sinn Féin-led, left-wing government. Any such government would portend change in the North of Ireland, symbolising a critical juncture on the path towards the ending of partition. Analysing electoral and ideological shifts across the post-2008 period, this article examines the immediate prospects for the coming to power of a left-wing government and an historic first in Irish politics.

Exploring Analytical Frameworks To Investigate Power Dynamics In Collaborative Learning In Engineering Education, S. I.Cruz Moreno, S. Chance

Research Outputs: 2025-Present

Previous research has examined patterns in women's team interactions within collaborative learning environments, highlighting potential barriers that hinder their full participation. This paper explores two analytical frameworks that could be beneficial in investigating power dynamics in such settings. Through a narrative literature review, we establish links between individuals' experiences and broader social or institutional practices, revealing underlying discourses and power relations. We identify a lack of evidence regarding discourses shaping attitudes and behaviours that perpetuate power inequities. Awareness of these dynamics could facilitate the provision of support and empathy to a more diverse group of students in engineering education.

Core-Periphery Multi-Modality Feature Alignment For Zero-Shot Medical Image Analysis, Xiaowei Yu, Lu Zhang, Zihao Wu, Dajiang Zhu

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Multi-modality learning, exemplified by the language-image pair pre-trained CLIP model, has demonstrated remarkable performance in enhancing zero-shot capabilities and has gained significant attention recently. However, simply applying language-image pre-trained CLIP to medical image analysis encounters substantial domain shifts, resulting in severe performance degradation due to inherent disparities between natural (non-medical) and medical image characteristics. To address this challenge and uphold or even enhance CLIP's zero-shot capability in medical image analysis, we develop a novel approach, Core-Periphery feature alignment for CLIP (CP-CLIP), to model medical images and corresponding clinical text jointly. To achieve this, we design an auxiliary neural network whose …
