The number of people living with and beyond cancer continues to increase worldwide, bringing significant attention to their rehabilitation needs. The World Health Organization (WHO) recognizes rehabilitation as an essential component of universal health coverage to prevent disease-related conditions, while also improving physical and mental functioning and overall well-being. The Package of Interventions for Rehabilitation (PIR) was developed by the WHO to address the global need for rehabilitation across 20 conditions with high prevalence and high levels of associated disability, including cancer. Understanding The Dynamics Of Board-Executive Director Relationships In Nonprofits: A Qualitative Study Of Youth-Serving Nonprofits In Utah, Jaxon Didericksen, Jayme E. Walters, Dorothy Wallis

Social Work Faculty Publications

A functional positive relationship between the executive director (ED) and the board of directors (BOD) is crucial to nonprofits meeting their missions. The present qualitative study sought to identify factors—including traits, behaviors, processes, and experiences—associated with positive relationships between BODs and EDs in youth-serving nonprofits in Utah. Surveys were utilized to identify pairs (N = 6) of board chairs and EDs who had high relationship satisfaction. Individual semi-structured interviews were employed with each participant. Transcripts were analyzed using two-cycle coding, descriptive and pattern coding in which three themes emerged: (1) Background; (2) Roles; and (3) Leadership. The findings illustrated …

Diversifying Community Connections, Courtney Belt

Research and Reflection on Learning and Teaching in Higher Education

The focus of this reflective commentary is building authentic relationships with a wider variety of community partners toward greater collective impact and equity in community experiential learning. During my time as Clinical Coordinator in the University of Dayton undergraduate music therapy program, we have added 11 new practicum placement sites with one additional starting Spring 2024. The addition of several of these sites stemmed from music therapy faculty discussions about the desire to serve a greater diversity of clientele in our music therapy practicum courses and expand learning opportunities for music therapy students. In this paper, I describe our decision …

Black Clinicians' Perceptions Of The Cultural Relevance Of Parent-Child Interaction Therapy For Black Families, Erica E. Coates, Sierra Coffey, Kaela Farrise Beauvoir, Emily Aron, Katherine R. Hayes, Felipa T. Chavez

Psychology Faculty Publications

Parent–child interaction therapy (PCIT) is a highly efficacious, evidence-based treatment for children with disruptive behaviors and their families. PCIT is a dyadic therapy designed to improve parent–child relationships and decrease children’s behavioral problems. PCIT research specific to Black families is currently sparse. Given findings that Black families have a higher attrition rate and demonstrate fewer significant improvements in parental well-being outcomes, we sought to assess clinicians’ perceived cultural alignment of PCIT with Black families. We conducted individual interviews via Zoom with 10 Black clinicians, trained in PCIT, who had experience treating Black families using PCIT. The research team generated the …

A Qualitative Examination Of Factors Potentially Impacting Displacement Of Historically Black Communities, Daffney Moore Oct 2024

A Qualitative Examination Of Factors Potentially Impacting Displacement Of Historically Black Communities, Daffney Moore

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Historically, Black communities have often been discussed in the context of crime and poverty; however, most Black communities were flourishing neighborhoods with businesses, churches, and schools. Most of the literature related to gentrification and displacement does not address the root causes of the disappearance of Black communities, which generally centers on policies, legislation, force-outs, economic development, and racial disparities. This case study aimed to explore the displacement of a suburban historically Black community in St. Louis County, Missouri. Scholars have scarcely examined or written about the history of Black communities. The research question sought to explore the impact of displacement …

Under Pressure: Employee Work Stress, Supervisory Mentoring Support, And Employee Career Success, Berrin Erdogan, Selin Kudret, Emily D. Campion, Talya N. Bauer, Julie Mccarthy, Bonnie Hayden Cheng

Business Faculty Publications and Presentations

Despite consistent findings that stressed employees benefit from social support, these employees do not always have access to such support. We propose and test a conceptual model suggesting employee work stress will negatively affect supervisory career and psychosocial mentoring support. Drawing from social exchange theory, we predict this will indirectly affect employee career success (lower career satisfaction and promotability ratings, fewer promotions), and that the relationship between employee work stress and lower supervisory mentoring support can be explained by lower levels of work engagement experienced by, and attributed to, stressed employees. We tested our model across three studies. In Study …

Reporting On Racial Violence: A Content Analysis Of Local & National Coverage Of Jacksonville, Florida’S Dollar General Shooting, Carter Mudgett Oct 2024

Reporting On Racial Violence: A Content Analysis Of Local & National Coverage Of Jacksonville, Florida’S Dollar General Shooting, Carter Mudgett

PANDION: The Osprey Journal of Research and Ideas

This study investigates how local and national news media outlets — particularly the Associated Press, CNN, the Florida Times-Union, and News4Jax — presented the “Dollar General Shooting” in Jacksonville, Florida on and after August 26, 2023. Far-reaching expectations for journalists call for “objective” observation and reporting, an ideal that is nearly impossible given that collective and individual experience inform perceptions and understandings. Nonetheless, the original definition of objectivity — as described by Kovach and Rosenstiel (2014, p. 10) — outlined a transparent approach to evidence, a process to remove personal bias from reporting, with the goal of a stronger journalistic …

Teach Me How To Love: The Love Ethic As A Foundation For Liberatory Counseling Education, R. Danielle Scott

The Journal of Advancing Education Practice

Centering social justice within the university classroom is essential for fostering an inclusive and equitable learning environment and empowering students toward an orientation for social change. This article explores how interdisciplinary learning, grounded in bell hooks’ concept of the “love ethic” from All About Love, can enhance counseling education within the field of Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences (SLHS). The study focuses on a flexible-synchronous course designed for upper-level undergraduate students as an elective in the Communication Sciences and Disorders department at a predominantly White Midwestern public university. By integrating decolonized course content and a critical, inclusive pedagogical approach, the …

From Sample To Population Generalization In Qualitative Research, Florentina Scârneci-Domnișoru Oct 2024

From Sample To Population Generalization In Qualitative Research, Florentina Scârneci-Domnișoru

The Qualitative Report

The split of methodology into qualitative and quantitative had all sorts of negative consequences, including the neglecting of some important scientific goals, such as generalizing research results in qualitative studies. Even if they don’t talk about generalizations, many qualitative researchers illegitimately extend their research results to populations much wider than those investigated. The article shows that the generalization of research results (from sample to population) is possible in qualitative research but that it can only be achieved through a sampling procedure that complies with specific rules. The article describes this procedure of internal generalization of results through a logical or …

Where’S The Etiquette? Telehealth Etiquette In Health Professions Education And Practice: A Scoping Review, Rachel Pittmann, Bobbie Ann Adair White, Nicole Danaher-Garcia, Anne Thompson

Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice

Background: Past research on in-office provider professionalism has shown an association between patient-provider relationship, patient satisfaction, and healthcare outcomes. Less research has been conducted on the topic of professionalism and communication in telehealth. Purpose: The purpose of this study is to map the evidence of telehealth etiquette within health professions education and practice. Method: A full search using keywords and synonyms of “webside manner” and “telehealth” was conducted in PubMed, CINAHL, and PsycInfo. Search results initially identified 263 …

Navigating Involuntary Care Home Closures: Professional Perspectives And Thematic Analysis Of Failures In Norfolk, Farah-Leila Mughal, Vikki Bunting, Jessica Ruth Austin

Journal of Social Care

The Care Quality Commission is responsible for regulating care homes across England to make sure that residents are respected and provided for. But what happens when they find a home who are not doing this? Little is known about commonalities in the main failings that preclude a care home’s closure after CQC intervention and little is known concerning the effects of closing down a home on healthcare professionals. To understand the common themes precluding care home closure and whether debriefing can aid healthcare professionals in dealing with the emotional challenges of care home closure. This study used thematic analysis to …

A Workforce Development Team’S Reflections On Social Work Retention And Turnover In South-East London, Uk, Mark Taylor, Shalini Abrol, Sharon Frieslaar, Corlea Taylor

Journal of Social Care

Statutory children’s services in England experience a high turnover of social work staff. Workforce development teams from these services are seen as part of the solution to reduce the haemorrhaging of social workers. However, how do those working in these teams imagine the world of staff turnover? This paper presents the perspectives of three experienced social workers from a workforce development team in South-East London on staff churn and retention. Informed by a collective experience of over 80 years in social work practice, management and mentoring roles, Sharon, Shalini and Corlea reflect and speculate on two contrasting experiences of social …
