Social Prescribing For Autistic Adults, Charlotte Featherstone
Social Prescribing For Autistic Adults, Charlotte Featherstone
Peninsula Medical School Theses
Background Autistic adults are affected by health and social disparities that impact life expectancy and quality of life, frequently resulting in escalating wellbeing concerns requiring costly acute care. Evidence suggests barriers to healthcare and a lack of post-diagnostic support may contribute to these inequalities. Social prescribing, a low-intensity personalised care model receiving increasing attention from policymakers and commissioners, offers opportunities to address isolation, build skills and promote health through collaborations between services and communities. However, social prescribing research and provision has overlooked wellbeing and access needs of autistic adults. This PhD project aimed to investigate factors affecting accessibility of social …

Background: Functional motor disorder—the motor variant of functional neurological disorder—is a disabling condition that is commonly associated with poor health outcomes. Pathophysiological models have inspired new treatment approaches such as specialist physiotherapy, although evidence from large randomised controlled trials is absent. We aimed to assess the clinical effectiveness of a specialist physiotherapy intervention for functional motor disorder compared with treatment as usual. Methods: In this pragmatic, multicentre, phase 3 randomised controlled trial at 11 hospitals in England and Scotland, adults with a clinically definite diagnosis of functional motor disorder, diagnosed by a neurologist, were included. Participants were randomly assigned (1:1, …

BACKGROUND: The term 'care-experienced' refers to anyone who is currently in care or has been in care at any stage in their life. A complex interplay of factors leads to care-experienced children and young people (CECYP) experiencing poorer oral health and access to dental care than their peers. A rapid review of the co-production of health and social care research with vulnerable children and young people (CYP) was carried out to inform the development of a co-produced research project exploring the oral health behaviours and access to dental services of CECYP. Here, 'co-production' refers to the involvement of CYP in …

Peninsula Medical School
Background and aims: Individuals living with severe mental illness such as schizophrenia and bipolar can have significant emotional, cognitive, physical and social challenges. Most people with severe mental illness in the United Kingdom do not receive specialist mental health care. Collaborative care is a system of support that combines clinical and organisational components to provide integrated and person-centred care. It has not been tested for severe mental illness in the United Kingdom. We aimed to develop and evaluate a primary care-based collaborative care model (PARTNERS) designed to improve quality of life for people with diagnoses of schizophrenia, bipolar or other …

Lessons Learned: Facilitating A Health And Wellness Intervention For Frontline Child Welfare Workers During Covid-19, Kara Haughtigan, Austin Griffiths, Kim Link, Oliver Beer, Lindsey Powell
School of Health Professions
Child maltreatment is one of the nation’s most significant public health concerns. The estimated annual economic burden of child maltreatment in the United States is more than $292 billion (Peterson et al., 2018). In 2021, approximately four million referrals were made to child protective service agencies alleging the maltreatment of more than seven million children (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services [HHS], 2023). The primary mechanism for evaluating these referrals is the frontline child welfare workforce. Frontline child welfare workers (FCWWs) engage families and make decisions about the safety of children that directly impact children’s futures (Edwards & Wildeman, …
Mental Health And The Black Church: Decreasing The Division In Divinity, Latonya Gray
Mental Health And The Black Church: Decreasing The Division In Divinity, Latonya Gray
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Racial disparities in mental health care persist for Black Americans, with only one in three who need treatment receiving it. The care they do receive is often of a poorer quality than that of other groups. Faith communities serving Black members could help address this gap by partnering with mental health professionals to meet congregants' needs. With mental health now at the forefront of public discourse, considering the specific needs of the Black community is critical. Black Americans face disproportionate mental health burdens but are more likely to seek counsel from clergy due to cultural stigma. Educating clergy on mental …

Exploring Viability In Help-Seeking Attitudes And Preferences Among Black Christian Churchgoers: A Case For Interprofessional Collaboration Between Black Churches And Mental Health Professionals, Samanda Bryant Hagan
Antioch University Dissertations & Theses
Support for collaborative partnerships between Black churches and mental health professionals is on the rise. Yet, little attention has been given to if and how the numerous barriers that Black people face in both domains, among others, affects mental health help-seeking attitudes and preferences on a sociocultural level. When there are negative consequences to mental health treatment utilization, either perceived or real, within every context of one’s lived experience, self-concealment may be a more favorable option. Using a quantitative, cross-sectional research design, the current study explores the relationship between self-concealment and religious and professional mental health help-seeking attitudes and preferences …
Cps Workers’ Perspectives On Mst-Ipv And Other Interventions For Child Maltreatment And Intimate Partner Violence: A Reflexive Thematic Analysis, Malea Lash
Antioch University Dissertations & Theses
Although the co-occurrence rate of intimate partner violence (IPV) and child abuse and neglect (CAN) is about 40% (Appel and Holden, 1998; Herrenkohl et al., 2008), little research currently exists on integrated treatment for these concerns. Furthermore, no known published studies investigate child protective services (CPS) workers’ perspectives on such treatment. The present study explores the perspectives of CPS workers on treatment for co-occurring IPV and CAN, specifically focusing on Multisystemic Therapy for Intimate Partner Violence (MST-IPV). A total of 18 Connecticut CPS workers participated in semi-structured interviews. Seven participants had experience working with MST-IPV treatment providers, while 11 participants …
Using Education To Confidently Identify And Report Concerns Of Child Abuse And Neglect: A Qualitative Improvement Initiative Through Staff Development, Sarah E. Neilson
Using Education To Confidently Identify And Report Concerns Of Child Abuse And Neglect: A Qualitative Improvement Initiative Through Staff Development, Sarah E. Neilson
Master's Theses and Capstones
BACKGROUND: Pre-licensure education on child abuse and neglect is crucial for nurses in the healthcare field. It helps to equip them with the knowledge and skills necessary to effectively identify, report, and intervene in cases of child abuse and neglect. Having this education available and understanding the signs and effects of child abuse and neglect, empowers nurses to take quick and decisive action in early intervention and prevention. Within the microsystem of a local Operating Room (OR), this quality improvement (QI) project will determine the muchneeded addition to the healthcare curriculum.
METHODS: The Plan, Do, Study, Act (PDSA) framework was …
Improving Postpartum Depression Education Within The Microsystem, Mackenzie A. Sturdevant
Improving Postpartum Depression Education Within The Microsystem, Mackenzie A. Sturdevant
Master's Theses and Capstones
BACKGROUND: Postpartum depression (PPD) is a significant mental health issue affecting a substantial percentage of new mothers, ranging from "baby blues" to severe forms like postpartum psychosis. Maternity nurses play a crucial role in early detection and education due to the gap in postpartum care follow-up appointments, which can delay necessary interventions.
LOCAL PROBLEM: Despite the critical role of maternity nurses, there is variability in their preparedness to educate and support patients regarding PPD during the immediate postpartum period. This study aims to enhance maternity nurses' knowledge and confidence in providing PPD education through a quality improvement (QI) project within …

Caseworkers or child protective workers are government officials tasked with investigating allegedly endangered children and their parents or guardians. They work for state agencies and exercise police power, but this kind of police power intrusively interferes with the life of an individual more than police power wielded by other law enforcement agencies. The Fourth Amendment provides individuals with protections against illegal searches and seizures of bodies and private spaces by the government, and police officers, as well as caseworkers, are required to respect these constitutional protections. Caseworkers, who are state actors, are dedicated to public safety in that they have …

Weathering The Storm: Risk And Resiliency Factors In Transgender And Gender-Diverse Youth, Haley R. Hedrick
Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)
Compared with their cisgender peers, transgender and gender-diverse (TGD) youth face unique and significant risk factors and are at increased risk for health disparities due to intersectional psychosocial factors including high prevalence of childhood trauma, discrimination and minority stress, societal stigma, and lack of access to competent, comprehensive, gender-affirming healthcare. A total of 180 participants were included in the current study, comprised of a clinically-derived sample of TGD youth aged 8–20 years (M = 14.42, SD = 2.17), and their parents. The current study examined risk and resilience variables relevant to TGD youth, with specific focus on adverse childhood events, …

Digital Journal of Clinical Medicine
Background:
Empathy refers to the ability to understand and comprehend others' thoughts and emotions as if it's their own, evoked by witnessing and connecting to the other person’s emotional state. Compassion fatigue, a consequence of an empathetic reaction, is the mental and physical tiredness resulting from being a witness to the suffering of others. It can result in negative consequences ultimately affecting the quality of treatment. The purpose of the study was to compare the level of empathy and compassion fatigue among mental health, and non-mental health professionals.
Methods
A comparative cross-sectional study was conducted over one year using 88 …

The number of immigrants coming to the United States has tripled since the 1970s (Budiman, 2020). Due to various global and international factors, the numbers of immigrants arriving to the United States continues to increase yearly (Ward and Batalova, 2023). Of the 45+ million immigrants currently in the United States, more than 11 million are undocumented (Budiman, 2020; Chhabra et al., 2023). Research has found that being an undocumented immigrant in the United States comes with many additional challenges and limitations including financial, health, educational, and legal barriers (Allweiss & Hilado, 2018; Capps et al., 2013; Chhabra et al., 2023; …

Inheriting Shame: A Critical Analysis Of “The Eugenics Review”, Brygette R. Kunde
All Student Theses and Dissertations
The Eugenic Society was a group of self-proclaimed "Race-Improvers" who came together intending to better humanity by founding The Eugenics Society and producing, "The Eugenics Review,” a publication that circulated throughout the United States from 1909 until 1968. Eugenicists wrote on diverse topics surrounding race betterment by introducing scientific methods that were both inhumane and injustice based on their parochial, perceived notions that inequalities are ubiquitous. Categories like religion, race, class, nationality, gender, and many others have been the sources of stigmatization, discrimination, and conflict throughout the centuries in the United States. Assessing the development of the eugenics movement is …

This article uses archival sources and other materials to analyze opinions in order to reconstruct events and responses, and to reveal theological arguments used by various sides in the debates on the ordination of women within the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Latvia (ELCL). The primary interest of authors has been to provide a comprehensive historical exposition. In studying historical documents, authors employ classical methods like identifying the origin and context of documents, as well as using generic, comparative, and content analysis. Secondly, authors are exploring how the issue of women's ordination has impacted the ELCL's relationships with its partners, and …
Overview Of Music Interventions For Addressing Emotional Distress Among Stroke Patients: A Scoping Review, Xiuqi Shao
Overview Of Music Interventions For Addressing Emotional Distress Among Stroke Patients: A Scoping Review, Xiuqi Shao
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Stroke rehabilitation focuses more on restoring function and physical ability and often overlooks the prevalence of psychological symptoms. The prevalence of depression after stroke has been reported to be between 25 and 79 percent. In addition to depression, anxiety, fatigue and apathy are common symptoms after stroke, with a significant overlap in prevalence and symptoms. Music interventions have been reported to evoke and support emotional processes and facilitate engagement in physical movement, making them valuable for stroke rehabilitation. Many studies have investigated the effects of music interventions on negative emotions in stroke patients, but there is still a need for …

Planning And Pedagogical Considerations For Teaching Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder In Physical Education, Andrew Sortwell
Medical Papers and Journal Articles
Around the world, autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a prevalent neurodevelopmental condition. It is linked to a wide range of deficiencies across multiple domains, including restrictive and repetitive behaviors that impair interaction or engagement with others. School-aged children with ASD face challenges that make physical activity more difficult. To address challenges associated with ASD, physical education interventions need to be tailored to the child’s needs and abilities. Despite advances in research on children with ASD in physical education, adopting contemporary approaches is yet to be the norm. This review aimed to examine the literature on intervention models to improve the …

Experiencing homelessness in infancy has been linked to negative physical and mental health outcomes. Parental well-being and the parent-infant relationship can also be negatively impacted by experiencing homelessness.
