Code Blue: How Police And Health Care Providers Disrupt Healing For Violently Injured Black Men, Cherrell Green
Code Blue: How Police And Health Care Providers Disrupt Healing For Violently Injured Black Men, Cherrell Green
Kroc IPJ Research and Resources
While Black males are disproportionately impacted by gun homicide, they are also grossly impacted by non-fatal shootings. The impact of gun violence extends far beyond the immediate physical harm inflicted by bullets; this harm can permeate and disrupt personal relationships, create lasting psychological distress, and undermine a sense of safety within communities. However, the needs of injured Black men are often overlooked in public discourse. Despite the prevalence of these traumatic experiences in the lives of low-income Black men, their response to trauma is often treated as pathology, with fewer resources devoted to addressing the adverse consequences associated with these …
Reintegrating Ex-Combatants Or Dividing Communities? Analysing Power Inequalities In Nigeria’S Amnesty Programme, Tarila Marclint Ebiede
Reintegrating Ex-Combatants Or Dividing Communities? Analysing Power Inequalities In Nigeria’S Amnesty Programme, Tarila Marclint Ebiede
Kroc IPJ Research and Resources
Disarmament, demobilisation and reintegration (DDR) programmes are integral components of post-conflict peacebuilding. The reintegration of ex-combatants is seen as the hallmark of successful DDR programming. While there is significant analysis of social and economic reintegration of ex-combatants, research seldom analyses how DDR impacts power relations in conflict-affected communities. This study addresses this gap by analysing the impact of Nigeria’s Presidential Amnesty Programme (PAP), a DDR programme designed and implemented by the Federal Government of Nigeria, on reproducing unequal power relations in conflict-affected communities in the Niger Delta. Based on primary data, the study finds that the implementation of PAP empowered …
Leadership In Idaho Full-Service Community Schools, Amy Mayton
Leadership In Idaho Full-Service Community Schools, Amy Mayton
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
Full-service community schools (FSCS) model can be traced back more than a century in the United States. Full-service community schools operate under the four-pillar model: Integrated student support, expanded and enriched learning time and opportunities, active family and community engagement, and collaborative leadership practices. FSCS are neighborhood focused schools that bring together the community, families, businesses and leaders to establish partnerships to help educate the “whole” child. The purpose of this qualitative case study is to identify and describe the principal and coordinator’s role, the relationship between community school principal and coordinator and investigate how the principal enacts leadership practice …
Implementation Of A Transition-Of-Care Model For Adult Ischemic Stroke Survivors, Megan Akacsos
Implementation Of A Transition-Of-Care Model For Adult Ischemic Stroke Survivors, Megan Akacsos
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The lasting physical and cognitive deficits associated with the complexities of newly acquired
disabilities resulting from an acute ischemic stroke (AIS) may lead to hospital readmissions. The
participating healthcare facility on the U.S. West Coast reported a hospital readmission rate for
AIS survivors of 24.29% within 30 days of discharge. This doctoral nursing project aimed to
determine if implementing the Comprehensive Post-Acute Stroke Services (COMPASS) model
would reduce 30-day readmission rates compared to no standardized transition-of-care model in
adult AIS survivors over 30 days. Implementing the COMPASS model in this patient population
was expected to better educate and support stroke …
Foster Youth Experiencing Homelessness In Texas: An Analysis Of Risk And Protective Factors That Impact Housing Stability, Monique Willoughby
Foster Youth Experiencing Homelessness In Texas: An Analysis Of Risk And Protective Factors That Impact Housing Stability, Monique Willoughby
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
While research on youth homelessness continues to grow, not much is known about the differences that exist between states. To address specific concerns effectively, a more nuanced and granular approach to assessment is needed. Specifically, Texas youth who are transitioning from foster and other systems of care into young adulthood and more independent living will need tailored support to adequately address their needs. This study is a step in that direction. Through identification of risks factors that predict homelessness for these youth, social workers, counselors, case managers, and other human services providers and advocates can better assess, plan, and intervene …

Audit Firms' Entry Into H-Share Audit Market And Mainland Audit Pricing: Evidence From China, Rui Zhang, Gaoliang Tian, Zichen Tian, Liuchuang Li
Research Collection School Of Accountancy
Purpose: This study aims to investigate whether mainland Chinese audit firms’ entry into the H-share market to provide audit services affects their mainland audit pricing. Design/methodology/approach: Using data on A-share listed companies in China from 2008 to 2018, a difference-in-differences model to test the research question is designed. Robustness tests are conducted to rule out alternative explanations and additional tests to shed light on the extent and inner workings of the main effect. Findings: The entry of mainland audit firms into the H-share audit market leads to a significant decrease in mainland audit pricing. Moreover, this main effect is (i) …

Advancing interventions and supports for individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) requires understanding that ASD is a lifelong developmental difference. However, little is known about the unique experiences of autistic young adults, parents, and community providers in the Latino community. The purpose of this study was to improve access to inclusive community based setting by identifying and learning about barriers and needs experienced by young adults, parents, and community providers of autistic individuals across the lifespan, but particularly during the transition to adulthood. Ten community providers, eighteen parents of autistic children, and five young adult self-advocates participated in focus groups. …
What Journalism Feels Like: Considering The Body Of The Journalist, Mark Deuze, Laura Glitsos
What Journalism Feels Like: Considering The Body Of The Journalist, Mark Deuze, Laura Glitsos
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
All journalists have bodies. This commonsensical fact acquires more currency every day as the work of reporters and editors becomes automated, robotized, and taken over by (generative) artificial intelligence. The embodied nature of news work matters, not in the least because of the personal attachment practitioners have to what journalism is, or should be. However, in the rich history of journalism studies, bodily perspectives are remarkably absent—beyond descriptions of journalists as sociodemographic profiles. In this essay, we explore various theoretical frameworks to bring the body back into the study and practice of journalism. In our argument, we apply the insights …

Introduction: State policies surrounding sexual minority (SM) rights are associated with tobacco use among SM individuals. Research is scant regarding the role of distinct SM policy categories on SM young adults’ (SMYAs) tobacco use and mechanisms explaining these associations. Methods: We analyzed 2023 survey data from 1100 SMYAs (ages 18–34; 14.2 % gender minority; 66.1 % bisexual+, 29.1 % monosexual; 53.2 % racial/ethnic minority) with representation across 45 US states and DC. Regression-based models examined: 1) direct associations of residing in states with negative and limited (vs. comprehensive) SM state policies with respect to 7 policy categories (relationship/parent recognition, nondiscrimination, …

School-Based Health Centers And Mental Health Stigma Before And During The Pandemic, Dara Shifrer, Suzy Fly, Rachel Springer, Xuan Dinh
Sociology Faculty Publications and Presentations
The mental health of children, and especially adolescents, has been a global public health priority for decades. School-based health centers (SBHCs) are health clinics established in close proximity to elementary and secondary schools for the purpose of increasing access to medical, and particularly mental health services, for children and adolescents. Yet, like other health clinics, SBHCs struggle to overcome structural and interpersonal stigma related to mental health conditions and support. Then, the pandemic threatened the sustainability and efficacy of SBHCs just as youth's mental health needs skyrocketed. We use Stangl et al.’s (2019)framework for health-related stigma to analyze data from …

Building On Strengths: A Collaborative, Asset-Focused Approach To Teaching Critical Information Literacy Skills, Rebecca B. Penrose, Kristi J. Chavez
Communications in Information Literacy
This article showcases an instructor–librarian collaborative model for teaching critical information literacy (CIL) skills in a higher education course by incorporating interactive workshops into a sequence of required course assignments. Using an asset-focused design, this assignment sequence allows students to first demonstrate their existing research strategies and then evaluate those strategies during workshop activities, applying the CIL principles they are learning. In this way, the approach recognizes students’ existing strengths and builds upon them, while emphasizing self-reflection opportunities and an intentional research focus on diversity, equity, inclusion, and representation. Results from our one-year study are also highlighted. The suggested instructional …

Muscle dysmorphia (MD) is characterized by extreme preoccupation with insufficient muscularity that prompts pathological behaviors and distress/impairment. The Muscle Dysmorphic Disorder Inventory (MDDI) — a widely used measure of MD symptoms — has yet to be validated among transgender women, despite emerging evidence suggesting risk for muscularity-oriented concerns in this population. We examined the MDDI factor structure as well as the reliability and validity of its subscales in a sample of 181 transgender women ages 19–73 years who participated in a national longitudinal cohort study of U.S. sexual and gender minority adults. Confirmatory factor analysis was used to examine model …

Querying the Past: LGBTQ Maine Oral History Project Collection
Cathy Kidman, is a 60-year-old lesbian activist who has been involved in LGBTQ and HIV/AIDS advocacy work in Maine since the 1990s. Kidman first became involved in activism through her work at The AIDS Project in Portland in the late 1980s, during the height of the HIV/AIDS epidemic. This led her to become an adult advisor for the LGBTQ youth organization Outright, which she helped build into a nonprofit organization. Kidman describes how the AIDS epidemic catalyzed LGBTQ activism, bringing together the gay, lesbian, and bisexual communities that had previously been more separate. She talks about the importance of creating …

Defining The Hospital Social Worker’S Role And Geriatric Depression, Cara M. Galob
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Hospital readmissions, compliance issues, increased long-term nursing home placements, and social determinants of health are significant concerns that burden the hospital inpatient industry. A notable factor that may impact these outcomes is the surprisingly high rates of depression in older adults. In various settings, social workers have historically provided clinical assessments and interventions for people suffering from depression. This study examines how clinical social workers can be utilized in a hospital inpatient setting to identify and treat older adults suffering from major depression. Social work interventions can positively impact many hospitals' long-term goals, such as improving the patient experience, achieving …

An Exploration Of Texas Latinos’ Perceptions Of Law Enforcement And Undocumented Immigration In The United States, Marika Dawkins-Cavazos, Camille Gibson
Criminal Justice Faculty Publications
Given increased trepidation about undocumented immigration in the United States, this study offers an examination of the extent to which Latinos who represent different generations of immigrants perceive United States law enforcement and the current state of undocumented immigration. It gives voice to Latinos, the most significant demographic crossing the border. The topic is relevant given policymakers’ interest in addressing the moral panic over increasing immigration to the country and an interest in law enforcement legitimacy as an essential ingredient in their effectiveness in combating crimes. This qualitative study using semi-structured interviews describes the perceptions of 40 Texas Latinos regarding …

Building A Better Future For Christian Higher Education, Maria Ll Lam
Journal of the North American Management Society
This paper is an exploratory study concerning the perceptions of 16 diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) officers at nine Protestant evangelical Christian universities and six Catholic universities. Among these 16 DEI officers, 15 are people of color. 13 possess Ph.D. degrees and hold the highest administrative positions at their institutions. They are often required to address justice issues in their diversity initiatives if they don’t want to reproduce systematic institutional injustices in historically white-dominated Christian universities. They are working across multiple boundaries (i.e., boundary spanners) for institutional-level diversity changes. They all voice motivations to make institutional changes and 11 DEI …

Machine Translation (MT) is used intensively by all kinds of professionals around the world. These translation tools, in the form of a web interface, mobile phone app or as a plugin, bring with them enormous advantages: they are instantly available in a multitude of languages, often cost-free, easy to use and most of the time correct. However, they do carry certain risks, often unknown to the professionals using them. The ineffective use of MT could lead to situations of misunderstanding or misuse with real legal, medical or other implications. Hence the need for professionals to develop an informed and critical …
