Meeting People Where They Are At: Master Of Social Work Portfolio, Zachary Palmer Alexander

Graduate Student Portfolios, Professional Papers, and Capstone Projects

This portfolio documents my understanding and ability to apply the ten social work competencies through a combination of assignments completed over the course of this degree as well as through examples from the internship and practicum placements I engaged in to develop practical experience. The paper is organized into sections that capture the Five Elements of Integrated Practice and the social work competencies that correspond to each element. Within the discussion of each competency is an examination of the four Dimensions of Practice and how they were applied within each competency both in my assignments and my work. Accompanying examples …

Re-Imagining Technical Communication Concepts Through A Social Work Lens: A Case Study And Content Analysis Of The Department Of Aging And Rehabilitative Services, Jonas Kee

Masters Theses, 2020-current

This thesis highlights how traditional technical communication concepts such as social justice rhetoric, disability studies, and user experience (UX) are re-imagined through the lens of Department of Aging and Rehabilitation Services (DARS) professionals. In this thesis, I present information gathered from a content analysis focused on four documents used within the DARS office, a survey, and interviews administered to DARS Vocational Rehabilitation (VR) counselors. This thesis analyzes the documents, survey, and interview questions through the experiences of DARS professionals, clients, and external stakeholders. This thesis concludes with business and pedagogical implications regarding the field of UX and how to effectively …

Naloxone Prescribing At Hospital Discharge: A Quality Improvement Initiative, Timothy Ford Dec 2024

Naloxone Prescribing At Hospital Discharge: A Quality Improvement Initiative, Timothy Ford

Doctors of Nursing Practice (DNP) Final Projects, 2020-current

Opioid overdose deaths remain one of the largest public health challenges in the United States. Naloxone allocation is an important tool to help combat opioid overdose deaths. The literature supports that hospitalized patients are generally receptive to receiving naloxone and opioid education and interdisciplinary teams working together can help facilitate identification of high-risk patients for naloxone allocation. This quality improvement change, guided by the IHI Triple Aims and Model for Healthcare Improvement frameworks, sought to increase the rate of patients leaving the Hospital Medicine Service with naloxone. To accomplish this, during the target units’ daily interdisciplinary rounds, providers were prompted …

Implementation Of A Standardized Screening And Referral Process For Social Determinants Of Health For Families With Children Within Two Rural Health Clinics, Laura Britton Stace Dec 2024

Implementation Of A Standardized Screening And Referral Process For Social Determinants Of Health For Families With Children Within Two Rural Health Clinics, Laura Britton Stace

Doctors of Nursing Practice (DNP) Final Projects, 2020-current

Abstract

The American Academy of Pediatrics Bright Futures Guidelines recommends social determinants of health (SDOH) screening at well-child checks (WCCs). Social determinants of health are environmental factors, including food accessibility, mental health, and substance use, that can affect quality of life.

Rural health clinics (RHCs) in a county in Virginia did not routinely use a standardized screener to identify pediatric SDOH risks, nor did they have a standardized referral process for identifying SDOH risks. A hospital community needs assessment found that over 20% of the county households were below the federal poverty level. It is estimated that many children in …

Situating Black Death And Grief Within The Context Of Ancestral Veneration, Chris Z. Sanders Dec 2024

Situating Black Death And Grief Within The Context Of Ancestral Veneration, Chris Z. Sanders

Tapestries: Interwoven voices of local and global identities

Death and grief are an ever-present phenomenon in the Black community. Starting with the Trans-Atlantic Slave trade and chattel slavery; then transcending into mortality rates; police brutality; gun violence; and just living while Black. Statistically, Black Americans die at higher rates than white Americans at nearly every age. As a result, the Black community has always had a very intimate and ambiguous relationship with death and grief. In response to this relationship, the Black community has created our own way of mourning through the formation of unique funeral and vigil traditions, the establishment of Black-owned funeral homes, the preservation of …

The Burden Of Birth: Racialized Margins Of Care In Washington, D.C., Beya D. Hull Dec 2024

The Burden Of Birth: Racialized Margins Of Care In Washington, D.C., Beya D. Hull

Tapestries: Interwoven voices of local and global identities

The United States has shockingly high rates of maternal mortality in which Black women bear a disproportionate burden of pregnancy related deaths. In D.C., the nation's capital, Black women account for 90% of pregnancy associated deaths, despite comprising less than half of the population. This disparity is a result of systemic medical racism, geographical barriers, and a lack of available culturally reverent care. Community-based collectives have emerged to fill in the gaps left by the healthcare system by providing essential services to underserved communities, specifically Black women. These organizations have proven the potential of ‘non-traditional’ healthcare models to change the …

Integrating The Bedside Mobility Assessment Tool (Bmat): Increasing Compliance With Assessments And Charting In Medical Surgical Units, Khaterah Sayed

Master's Projects and Capstones

Objective: Decreased patient mobilization is associated with poor patient recovery and increased hospital costs. Complications include decreased functional capacity, pressure injuries, deep vein thrombosis, and infections. Aim: The Bedside Mobility Assessment Tool (BMAT) is a mobility assessment tool designed to help healthcare providers safely mobilize patients (Boynton et al., 2020). In a 244-bed California hospital, preliminary data from three medical-surgical units indicate an average daily patient census of 23.7 of which only 31.3% were assessed using the BMAT. This quality improvement intervention aims to increase compliance with the BMAT by 10%. Interventions: Over a six-week period, staff received …

Subcutaneous Electroencephalography Monitoring For People With Epilepsy And Intellectual Disability: Co-Production Workshops, Rohit Shankar Dec 2024

Subcutaneous Electroencephalography Monitoring For People With Epilepsy And Intellectual Disability: Co-Production Workshops, Rohit Shankar

Peninsula Medical School

Background Nearly 25% of people with intellectual disability (PwID) have epilepsy compared to 1% of the UK general population. PwID are commonly excluded from research, eventually affecting their care. Understanding seizures in PwID is particularly challenging because of reliance on subjective external observation and poor objective validation. Remote electroencephalography (EEG) monitoring could capture objective data, but particular challenges and implementation strategies for this population need to be understood. Aim This co-production aimed to explore the accessibility and potential impact of a remote, long-term EEG tool (UnEEG 24/7 SubQ) for PwID and epilepsy. Method We conducted six, 2-hour long workshops; three …

An Exploratory Study Of The Barriers Of Pediatric Palliative Care Programs And Their Relationships To Funding, Mary Maureen Kirkpatrick Mclaughlin

Dissertations

This study, a sequential mixed methods design, used quantitative techniques and a qualitative, phenomenological approach. The quantitative phase addressed the research question: Does the reimbursement of services for the delivery of pediatric palliative care differ between types of funding, and is funding related to directors' perceptions of obstacles to the delivery of care? The qualitative phase addressed the research question: What are the barriers that CHI PACC directors' experience in their roles and how do they overcome them?
