The Forgotten Identity: How Institutions Of Higher Education Can Support Students In Faith Identity Development, Christina Shapland
The Forgotten Identity: How Institutions Of Higher Education Can Support Students In Faith Identity Development, Christina Shapland
MAGIS: Student Development Journal
This study considers the role student affairs prac- titioners play in the faith identity development of students. The literature review found that interfaith dialogue between students, religious pluralism education, and effective programming as successful means in creating religiously toler- ant environments. Interviews with two members of campus ministry offices and two student affairs practitioners at private institutions in the Pacific Northwest indicated that student affairs practitioners need more education on basic religious traditions and how to engage students in conversations regarding faith and spirituality. Student affairs practitioners are often hesitant to engage in conversations due to perceptions of legality, unease …

Barriers And Enablers Of Native Americans In Higher Education: A Review Of The Literature, Christina Shapland
Barriers And Enablers Of Native Americans In Higher Education: A Review Of The Literature, Christina Shapland
MAGIS: Student Development Journal
The barriers and enablers of Native Americans in higher education were examined in four qualitative studies. Family, single parenthood, lack of adequate academic preparation, and finances were consistently found to be barriers to Native Americans in the pursuit of higher education. Persistence factors were identified as on-campus childcare, access to distance education, the support of family, and finding role models within the institution. Native American students experienced considerable isolation and stereotyping at predominantly White institutions. Further research is needed regarding Native American students in higher education. The implementation of building relationships between Native American families and mainstream universities, the recruitment …

Rethinking Scholarship: A Case For Nontraditional Research Paradigms In Higher Education, Alvin Sturdivant
MAGIS: Student Development Journal
Research and scholarship is about making a unique contribution to your discipline, answering questions, provoking thought, advancing learning and the pursuit of cognitive truth. It is about discovery, integration of knowledge, application of new concepts, and teach- ing. Research and scholarship comes in many forms, each valuable for its ability to contribute to intellectual discourse. Through the reading of this article, I hope you, the reader, will consider how you define scholarship and incorporate nontraditional methodologies into your formal and informal roles in the lives of students. Through Scholarly Personal Narrative I discovered my voice, answered some of the more …

The Fuel Of Social Change: Native Activism In The 1960s And 1970s And The Development Of Native American Studies, Hannah Muehlschlegel
The Fuel Of Social Change: Native Activism In The 1960s And 1970s And The Development Of Native American Studies, Hannah Muehlschlegel
HS 390 Primary Research Papers
During the 1960s and 1970s, the United States experienced a rise in social activism which subsequently sparked progressive political movements. In the midst of this social atmosphere, the Native American community advocated for rights and visibility for the Indigenous populations and were active participants in many other social movements of the time. This paper uses Northern Michigan University’s archives to explore how the influx of progressive social movements created an atmosphere for Native American activism to grow and henceforth contributed to the development of Native American Studies programs as an academic pursuit across the country. Archival research reveals how the …
Religious And Cultural Impacts On College Students Struggling With Anxiety: A Mixed Methods Study, Gloria Luna, Katie Draper
Religious And Cultural Impacts On College Students Struggling With Anxiety: A Mixed Methods Study, Gloria Luna, Katie Draper
MSW Capstone Conference
This study examines how religious and cultural factors influence the ways in which college students manage anxiety and distress, highlighting how religious beliefs can both comfort and, in some cases, contribute to distress. Through qualitative interviews, we found that students with a strong connection to their faith generally experienced lower levels of anxiety, often finding relief through prayer and other spiritual practices. In contrast, students who struggled to practice their beliefs reported higher anxiety, emphasizing the complex relationship between spirituality and mental health. We also explored the role of culture, noting that cultural backgrounds often intersect with religious practices, shaping …
Writing In Philosophy: Pedagogy And Practice, Sarah K. Donovan, Renée Smith
Writing In Philosophy: Pedagogy And Practice, Sarah K. Donovan, Renée Smith
Philosophy and Religious Studies
Even a cursory internet search of syllabi for philosophy courses shows that the tradition of assigning papers—five-page papers, ten-page papers, fifteen-page papers—is still thriving. Yet the schedule of topics, often listed on those same syllabi, very seldom reveals any course time devoted to teaching students how to write. Perhaps the assignments themselves reveal the process of writing papers, rubrics reveal the expectations, and feedback nudges students to improve their writing. But that kind of information is not transparent in many syllabi. Even if we suppose that philosophy faculty support the idea of Writing Across the Curriculum, in practice faculty across …

Treating The Administrative As Law: Responding To The “Judicial Aggrandizement” Critique, Chad Squitieri
Treating The Administrative As Law: Responding To The “Judicial Aggrandizement” Critique, Chad Squitieri
Scholarly Articles
Modern separation-of-powers jurisprudence—including key decisions decided during the Supreme Court’s 2023-24 term—has been critiqued on the grounds that it constitutes “judicial aggrandizement,” i.e., that it impermissibly empowers federal courts to decide separation-of-powers questions better left to Congress and the President. This “judicial aggrandizement” critique goes too far to the extent it suggests that federal courts may not play any role in enforcing the separation of powers. After all, ours is a system of a President and Congress constrained by a written Constitution—not a King in Parliament free to act outside of judicial constraint. But the “judicial aggrandizement” critique is persuasive …

Compelling Compliance: An Analysis Of Methods For Enforcing New York’S Compulsory Education Law As Applied To Haredi Yeshivas, Kaitlyn Sivertsen
Compelling Compliance: An Analysis Of Methods For Enforcing New York’S Compulsory Education Law As Applied To Haredi Yeshivas, Kaitlyn Sivertsen
Fordham Law Review
This Note explains recent findings that many of New York’s Haredi yeshivas are failing to comply with the compulsory education laws and advocacy for the state to heighten enforcement. It examines other community members’ opposition to this belief and numerous legal challenges. This Note advances legal scholarship by pointing out that although these debates regarding education and religious freedom are important, in the context of New York’s Haredi yeshivas, they are futile without also recognizing that New York’s statute does not provide for efficient means of enforcement. There is little to no existing literature on this specific issue. Thus, this …

First Latter-Day Saint Women Baptized In Europe And Oceania: Ann Cottam Dawson (1785-1849) And Terii (Ca. 1800-Ca. 1860), Robyn Shahan Spears
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation is a study in the backgrounds, Latter-day Saint conversions, and ministries of two early nineteenth-century women: Ann Cottam Dawson in Lancashire, England and a woman known simply as Terii on the island of Tubuai in the Austral Islands (now French Polynesia). Because these two women did not leave behind diaries, this study relies upon evidence such as missionary diaries, newspapers, church records, vital records, genealogical records, sermons, and even a mutiny narrative. The discussion is organized in three parts: Dawson’s biography, Terii’s biography, and a comparison of the two. Both women fed and housed the missionaries, performed women’s …
Spatial Trajectories, Theories, And Topoi In The Study Of Religion And Film, Teng-Kuan Ng
Spatial Trajectories, Theories, And Topoi In The Study Of Religion And Film, Teng-Kuan Ng
Research Collection College of Integrative Studies
This chapter explores the correlations between religion and film studies and the geographies of religion. Using perspectives from the latter to foreground overlooked aspects of the former, I argue that investigations of the religious problematic via film are productively enriched when refocused on the question: what kind of space does religious cinema constitute? Rather than offering a single answer, I highlight the various phenomenological, ritual, and ethical spaces that cinema—comprising production, text, and reception—can construct. In the first section, I briefly trace the “spatial turns” that religion and film scholarship has taken since its inception, observing the field’s evolving geographical …
Addressing The Gap: A Need For A Gender-Based Approach In Indonesia’S Deradicalization Program, Raneeta Mutiara
Addressing The Gap: A Need For A Gender-Based Approach In Indonesia’S Deradicalization Program, Raneeta Mutiara
Journal of Terrorism Studies
An effective deradicalisation program is the key to combating violent extremism and reducing potential harm to society from radical ideologies. A gender-based approach to tackling violent extremism among women has received esteemed recognition from the governments of many countries. Various international organizations and scholarly institutes have also approved the advantages of this method. This work aims to find and address the gap in the current deradicalization program in Indonesia for future development in both academic and practical areas of this subject matter. An integrative literature review is used as a method that involves synthesizing previous research and integrating empirical findings …

Spiritual Development For The Non-Spiritual:Supporting Atheist Students’ Exploration Formeaning And Purpose, Adam Serafin
Spiritual Development For The Non-Spiritual:Supporting Atheist Students’ Exploration Formeaning And Purpose, Adam Serafin
MAGIS: Student Development Journal
The renewed focus on the inner development of college students (Love & Talbot, 1999) has the potential to isolate and alienate non-religious students if we fail to approach spiritual development holistically and support all students as they search for purpose and meaning. Twenty five percent of traditional college age students (ages 18-29) identify as religiously unaffiliated, 3% of which identify as atheist (Pew Charitable Trusts, 2008). Atheists are the least trusted segment of the American population, largely attributed to the American connotation between religion and morality (Edgell et al., 2006). Atheophobia is present on college campuses, further marginalizing, isolating, and …

Negotiating Tolerance: Gotthold Ephraim Lessing And Researching Religion In China, Naomi Thurston
Budhi: A Journal of Ideas and Culture
Just as G. E. Lessing criticized what he saw as the narrow mindedness of his contemporaries by creating characters that exemplified a morally enlightened rationalism, religious studies scholars in contemporary China have helped instruct and reshape uninformed or generalizing attitudes towards religion in Chinese society. Reflecting on Lessing’s literary case for religious tolerance, the present article discusses different understandings of the nature and significance of religion in the field of so-called “Sino-Christian studies” (汉语基督教研究 Hanyu Jidujiao yanjiu). It demonstrates how religious and “theological tolerance” are variously understood depending on the stances, approaches, and constructions of meaning of individual scholars, influenced, …
