Pediatric lead poisoning remains a persistent public health problem. Children in the US spend the preponderance of their time at home; thus, housing is an important social determinant of health. Improving health outcomes derived from housing-based sources involves differentiating the risks posed by the existing housing stock. In this paper, we developed a parcel-level lead risk index (LRI) based on external housing conditions and the year of home construction. The purpose of this study was to introduce a housing-based lead risk index (LRI), developed using retrospective data, to estimate parcel-by-parcel variation in housing-based lead risk. We described how the LRI …

Department of Psychiatry and Human Behavior Faculty Papers
AIM: Opioid use disorder (OUD) is the problematic use of licit or illicit opioids. Thus far, the literature on biological sex differences in accessing treatment is scarce. Hence, we hypothesize that biological sex has a moderating effect on OUD treatment accessibility. We aim to explore biological sex differences in treatment disparities and its role in wait time to enter OUD treatment.
METHOD: Using the 2018 Treatment Episode Data Set Discharge, the national sample representative of OUD patients in the substance use disorder treatment facilities within the 50 states of the United States was 382,547. Univariate and multivariable logistic analysis of …

A Network Analysis Of Social Determinants Of Health And Youth Suicidal Ideation And Suicide Attempts At The Neighborhood-Level In Houston, Tx, Tyler Hendley
LSU Master's Theses
Youth suicide is a complex, multi-faceted human phenomenon that has no singular cause but instead is theorized to be a result of an interplay of psychological, biological, and social risk and protective factors. To best identify youth suicide risk and possible avenues for intervention, a social-ecological model approach may prove beneficial. As community-level risk factors (i.e., social determinants of health (SDOH)) have shown to impact health outcomes, it is important to understand the association between community-level risk and youth suicide-related behaviors. Utilizing a network analytic approach, this study developed an estimated partial correlation network to understand the relationship between youth …

Uruk Journal of Human Sciences
This study aims to shed light on the story of the Prophet Adam (peace be upon him), his wife Eve, and their two sons, Cain and Abel, as narrated by the Imams of Ahl al-Bayt (peace be upon them) in the books of exegesis. These texts contain historical accounts that discuss the creation of the Prophet Adam and Eve (peace be upon them) and the story of their two sons. What is notable about their narrations is that they addressed controversial aspects of their history, relying on the Qur'anic context, which preserves the prophets' dignity and absolves them from any …

The Qur’anic methods are the key to scientific research for interpretive studies and others. The Qur’an is the table of every student and researcher, and through it valleys flow according to their capacity. Therefore, our humble research in this regard has become the method of Qur’anic rhetoric, which is a Qur’anic method that beautifies the details or shortens the speech to reach the intended meaning through convincing brevity, which is called (praxis). It gives us confirmation and clarification or an increase in the statement and through artistic repetition that is not boring because it rearranges the rhetorical (brief) words in …

Marriage between a man and a woman is considered a sacred bond for the purpose of nurturing his family, but one of the spouses may become infertile, which disturbs the marital life and threatens its reunification Jurisprudence was divided into a direction that supported the request for separation due to the defect of infertility, and a direction opposed. The Iraqi legislator granted the right to the wife only to seek separation due to the defect of infertility, but not the husband. This is what distinguishes the Iraqi legislator, with evidence of the status of infertility in accordance with

Iraqi Efl College Learners’ Performanceof Adjective Placement Order, Hisham Adnan Almumar, Muhtaram Abdulwahid Al-Owaidi
Uruk Journal of Human Sciences
This paper deals with the preferable order of adjectives as one of the open classes in English grammar where various adjectives describe a following noun or pronoun. It also tends to identify the students' perception of the placement of patterns of adjectives. The problem of this study lies precisely in the sense that this subject may cause difficulty for Iraqi students in ordering multiple successful adjectives in a spoken or written form of the language. For this reason, it accounts for the causes of the dominant errors made by the undergraduates and their sources. To evaluate the student's strengths and …

New York Times V. Sullivan: A Civil Rights Story, Samantha Barbas
New York Times V. Sullivan: A Civil Rights Story, Samantha Barbas
Texas A&M Law Review
The 1964 Supreme Court decision in New York Times v. Sullivan established the “actual malice” rule in libel law, requiring that in order to win a libel suit, a public official must show that a defamatory statement was false and that the speaker made the statement knowing that it was false or “with reckless disregard of whether it was false or not.”
Sullivan involved a libel suit brought by segregationist Alabama officials against the New York Times (“Times”) and leaders of the civil rights movement. Sullivan arose from sectional battles over civil rights and integration in the 1960s. An all-white …

Federal Rule Of Evidence 702: A History And Guide To The 2023 Amendments Governing Expert Evidence, Mark A. Behrens, Andrew J. Trask
Texas A&M Law Review
Federal Rule of Evidence 702 was amended effective December 1, 2023. The Rule was amended to clarify and emphasize that expert testimony may not be admitted unless the proponent demonstrates to the court by a preponderance of the evidence that the proffered testimony meets all of the Rule’s admissibility requirements. The amendment was necessitated by decisions by many federal courts incorrectly applying the reliability requirements set forth in Rule 702(b) and (d) and declaring that expert testimony is presumed to be admissible. Rule 702 was also amended to prevent “overstatement” by experts. Rule 702(d) now emphasizes that an expert’s opinion …
Murder On The Hearsay Trail, Jeffrey Bellin
Murder On The Hearsay Trail, Jeffrey Bellin
Texas A&M Law Review
Judges, lawyers, and law students struggle to apply American evidence law’s most distinctive feature—the hearsay prohibition. The problem is that hearsay is difficult to master and somewhat dull. At the same time, hearsay evidence is ubiquitous and important. Every litigator has a story about a judge’s eccentric hearsay rulings; mine is the trial judge who waved his hand dismissively at hearsay objections, letting witnesses answer on the grounds that “I want to hear it.” And the case law is littered with appellate opinions scolding trial judges for erroneous hearsay rulings while introducing errors of their own.
That is just the …

Massey V. Texas: Eroding The Exclusionary Rule And Incentivizing Police Misconduct, Geoffrey S. Corn, Brandon E. Beck
Texas A&M Law Review
In April 2023, the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals upheld the conviction of James Calvin Massey for possession of drugs discovered as a direct result of an unconstitutional Terry frisk. Ordinarily, with limited exceptions, the exclusionary rule prohibits the prosecution from using contraband discovered as a result of unconstitutional police action, akin to the situation Mr. Massey encountered. In fact, that’s exactly why the intermediate court of appeals reversed Mr. Massey’s conviction. When the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals reinstated Massey’s conviction, it broke new ground, holding that because Mr. Massey resisted the unconstitutional Terry frisk, his uncharged misdemeanor offense …
Exit Through The White House: Congressional Constraints On Unilateral Presidential Withdrawal From Treaties, Taylor R. Dalton
Exit Through The White House: Congressional Constraints On Unilateral Presidential Withdrawal From Treaties, Taylor R. Dalton
Texas A&M Law Review
When does the U.S. President have the constitutional authority to withdraw from a treaty unilaterally? Where the U.S. Constitution details the making but not the exiting of treaties, the U.S. Supreme Court has largely left the issue open for the political branches to resolve. Many scholars argue that modern practice supports a conclusion that the President has the practical—if not legal—power to withdraw unilaterally from an Article II treaty or congressional-executive agreement without the consent of Congress. This argument is largely premised on the claim that Congress has acquiesced to executive practice, providing a gloss on expansive executive power to …
Administrative Law's Unavailing Duties, Daniel Z. Epstein
Administrative Law's Unavailing Duties, Daniel Z. Epstein
Texas A&M Law Review
Through a novel empirical approach, this Article shows that legal doctrine does not determine whether federal courts provide remedies when agencies fail to enforce a statutory duty. Plaintiffs are most likely to succeed against the government when litigating statutory procedures located within agency-specific statutes and which raise major policy questions in immigration, healthcare, Native American rights, public housing, the environment, or labor. Others are more likely to lose against the government: plaintiffs litigating statutory violations involving procedures not specific to an agency, but which apply to officers and agencies throughout the bureaucracy. These cases involve duties governing ethics, transparency, recordkeeping, …
Careers After Prison: Preventing Recidivism By Reforming Restrictive Licensing Regimes, Ian C. Stephens
Careers After Prison: Preventing Recidivism By Reforming Restrictive Licensing Regimes, Ian C. Stephens
Texas A&M Law Review
A prisoner leaving confinement in the United States is unlikely to seamlessly reintegrate into society. People leaving incarceration face a cornucopia of economic and social barriers that prevent them from easily finding secure economic footing. The well-established link between unemployment and recidivism materializes when economic circumstances drive the poor and desperate back toward crime and back into prison. This vicious circle not only rips apart families and communities but also imposes a ruinously expensive financial burden on states. Despite this cost, many states continue to bar formerly incarcerated people from their most viable opportunities to become peaceful and productive members …
Doe V. Geller And Personal Jurisdiction Over Internet Activities, Elizabeth Kruse
Doe V. Geller And Personal Jurisdiction Over Internet Activities, Elizabeth Kruse
Texas A&M Law Review
Personal jurisdiction is fundamental in American jurisprudence since it gives a court the power to bind parties with its ruling. Despite this subject’s mundane veneer, the concept is so complicated that it has inspired thousands of academic articles. A brief search on Westlaw under Law Reviews & Journals for the term “personal jurisdiction” yields nearly 10,000 results, while Lexis+ yields 14,662 for the same term. Even so, as the nature of human interaction has changed from in person, to in writing, to over the phone, and, most recently, to over the internet, the doctrine of personal jurisdiction has accommodated. Recent …

Given the ubiquitous nature of love, numerous theories have been proposed to explain its existence. One such theory refers to love as a commitment device, suggesting that romantic love evolved to foster commitment between partners and enhance their reproductive success. In the present study, we investigated this hypothesis using a large-scale sample of 86,310 individual responses collected across 90 countries. If romantic love is universally perceived as a force that fosters commitment between long-term partners, we expected that individuals likely to suffer greater losses from the termination of their relationships—including people of lower socioeconomic status, those with many children, and …

Environmental contamination can have lasting impacts on surrounding communities, though the long-term impacts can be difficult to ascertain. The disaster at the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant in 1986 and subsequent remediation efforts resulted in contamination of the local environment with radioactive material, heavy metals, and additional environmental toxicants. Many of these are mutagenic in nature, and the full effect of these exposures on local flora and fauna has yet to be understood. Several hundred free-roaming dogs occupy the contaminated area surrounding the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant, and previous studies have highlighted a striking level of genetic differentiation between two geographically …

Despite social media's use as a tool for social influence and increase in mental health disclosures within Black communities, limited literature describes how Black college students, specifically, are utilizing social media related to mental health. This qualitative study includes a description of the influence of social media on the perception of counseling services for Black college students. Using interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA) through the lens of Kelman's social influence theory, the influence of social media on Black college students' perception of counseling services was explored. Currently enrolled Black or African American college or university students within the United States, over …
