Paradigma: Jurnal Kajian Budaya

The phenomenon of Citayam Fashion Week has symbolically influenced the way lower-class youth dress in central Jakarta. What was once an urban area in Sudirman has transformed into a fashion arena after videos of young people sporting distinctive clothing styles went viral. More than just a social gathering, this occurrence has attracted significant attention on social media, showcasing unique fashion expressions. However, this spontaneous and instantaneous trend has sparked a wide range of responses, with opinions varying from viewing it as a creative expression to considering it counterproductive. This study employs Jean Baudrillard’s theory as its formal framework in qualitative …

Paradigma: Jurnal Kajian Budaya

This article examines two performance models of Reyog Ponorogo: the festival model and the obyokan model. These two competing models represent differing perspectives on one side, the interests of the artists and the community, and on the other, the interests of the state. By applying cultural studies theories, particularly those of representation and hegemony, this study analyzes data collected through observations of Reyog performances at both festival and obyokan events, as well as interviews with artists and community members. The findings reveal that the obyokan model emphasizes an egalitarian spirit, allowing artists greater aesthetic freedom and providing the community with …

In 2024, Poland celebrates the twentieth anniversary of its membership in the European Union. This milestone presents a good opportunity to examine the development of Polish competition law, including whether and how the procedures applied in Polish competition protection proceedings have been influenced by EU competition law. Although, according to the principle of procedural autonomy, Member States have the ability to shape their procedural rules independently, it appears that over the past twenty years, EU law has had an impact on national procedures, particularly through legal solutions adopted in Council Regulation (EC) No 1/2003, and later in Directive (EU) No …

The Impact Of The Judgment In Case C-211/22 Super Bock On The Assessment Of Vertical Pricing Agreements, Krzysztof Kanton Dec 2024

The Impact Of The Judgment In Case C-211/22 Super Bock On The Assessment Of Vertical Pricing Agreements, Krzysztof Kanton

internetowy Kwartalnik Antymonopolowy i Regulacyjny (internet Quarterly on Antitrust and Regulation)

The article discusses the impact of the judgment of the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) in the Super Bock case (C-211/22) on the assessment of vertical pricing agreements under EU competition law. The judgment underscores the need to apply an economic approach when assessing whether an agreement, which provides for the setting of fixed or minimum resale prices, constitutes a restriction of competition ‘by object’. In this judgment, the CJEU rejects the previous formalistic approach – present in the practice of the EC and NCAs – which automatically qualified RPMs as anti-competitive, without analyzing its economic and …

Lung cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer worldwide in 2022, with over 2.5 million new cases, or 1 in 8 of all cancers diagnosed worldwide. Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer related mortality in the United States, with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) being the most prevalent type. For early-stage NSCLC, lung resection with anatomic lobectomy remains the standard of care. Robot-assisted lobectomy is gaining popularity over video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) and open thoracotomy due to improved visualization, ergonomics, and instrumentation. Despite these advancements, intraoperative complications and a steep learning curve present significant barriers to the widespread …

The Win Ratio Approach In Bayesian Monitoring For Two-Arm Phase Ii Clinical Trial Designs With Multiple Time-To-Event Endpoints, Xinran Huang, Jian Wang, Jing Ning Dec 2024

The Win Ratio Approach In Bayesian Monitoring For Two-Arm Phase Ii Clinical Trial Designs With Multiple Time-To-Event Endpoints, Xinran Huang, Jian Wang, Jing Ning

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

To assess the preliminary therapeutic impact of a novel treatment, futility monitoring is commonly employed in Phase II clinical trials to facilitate informed decisions regarding the early termination of trials. Given the rapid evolution in cancer treatment development, particularly with new agents like immunotherapeutic agents, the focus has often shifted from objective response to time-to-event endpoints. In trials involving multiple time-to-event endpoints, existing monitoring designs typically select one as the primary endpoint or employ a composite endpoint as the time to the first occurrence of any event. However, relying on a single efficacy endpoint may not adequately evaluate an experimental …

Bayesian Nonparametric Model For Heterogeneous Treatment Effects With Zero-Inflated Data, Chanmin Kim, Yisheng Li, Ting Xu, Zhongxing Liao

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

One goal of precision medicine is to develop effective treatments for patients by tailoring to their individual demographic, clinical, and/or genetic characteristics. To achieve this goal, statistical models must be developed that can identify and evaluate potentially heterogeneous treatment effects in a robust manner. The oft-cited existing methods for assessing treatment effect heterogeneity are based upon parametric models with interactions or conditioning on covariate values, the performance of which is sensitive to the omission of important covariates and/or the choice of their values. We propose a new Bayesian nonparametric (BNP) method for estimating heterogeneous causal effects in studies with zero-inflated …

Scheme For The Development Of Sharia-Compliant Financial Inclusion For Farmers On Dryland Area Through The Optimization Of Biological Assets, Kartika Nur Rakhman, Nur Fatwa

Journal Of Middle East and Islamic Studies

Farmers in the Gunungkidul Regency are mostly categorized as impoverished. Resource constraints make it challenging for them to progress. One of the problems they face is the lack of capital for their businesses and daily needs. To meet these needs, they often resort to borrowing from loan sharks. This occurs partly due to the absence of assets they can use to access financing from Sharia-compliant financial institutions. This research aimed to assess the feasibility of biological assets, particularly teak trees (Tectona grandis), to be accepted as collateral in Sharia-compliant financing. Additionally, this study aimed to provide an alternative …

Impact Of Covid-19 On International Trade, Paresh Kumar Narayan, Chun Ping Chang, Xin-Xin Zhao Dec 2024

Impact Of Covid-19 On International Trade, Paresh Kumar Narayan, Chun Ping Chang, Xin-Xin Zhao

Bulletin of Monetary Economics and Banking

Using a global monthly unbalanced panel dataset of 70 countries from January 2020 to May 2023, we first examine the impact of COVID-19 on global trade. The empirical results show a detrimental impact of COVID-19 on countries’ foreign trade, which persists over six months. We evaluate the robustness of our findings by employing an alternative dependent variable and different estimators. Our main findings hold and two features of our results standout: first, that COVID-19 hurt international trade more for non-Asian countries; and second, that sectoral sensitivity to COVID-19 was heterogenous. These results have important policy implications.

Cheaper Is Better? Evidence From China Fund Expense And Performance, Yezhou Sha, Jianwu Yi Dec 2024

Cheaper Is Better? Evidence From China Fund Expense And Performance, Yezhou Sha, Jianwu Yi

Bulletin of Monetary Economics and Banking

The expense of mutual fund sustained a substantial growth in recent years, but do the expense of fund genuinely contribute to the fund performance? We examine the relation between the expense of Chinese actively managed equity funds and their performance. We show that the expense has a negative effect on the excess return of funds, which is consistent with the well-established negative relation from previous research of the mutual fund in U.S. In subsequent heterogeneity analysis, we also find that the fund’s return volatility strengthens the negative effects, whereas its age and size did not. After further analysis and additional …

Macroeconomic Risks Of Carbon Emission Constraints, Yuzhe Huang, Changchun Pan Dec 2024

Macroeconomic Risks Of Carbon Emission Constraints, Yuzhe Huang, Changchun Pan

Bulletin of Monetary Economics and Banking

Green and low-carbon transformation is an inevitable trend for protecting the climate and ecology while achieving stable economic development. To actively and prudently achieve carbon emission targets, the government will further implement robust policy measures to support the development of a green and low-carbon economy. However, there are risks associated with the implementation strength and frequency of future carbon emission constraint policies, which could impact different market economic entities and cause macroeconomic fluctuations. This paper analyzes the transmission mechanism of the risks associated with carbon emission constraint policies, and examines their impact on the macroeconomy. We find that the risks …

How Does Climate Risk Affect Employment Adjustment? Firm-Level Evidence From China, Dongmin Kong, Zihan Xiong, Ni Qin

Bulletin of Monetary Economics and Banking

In recent years, global climate risk has been on the rise, with extreme weather and climate-related events becoming more frequent and severe, garnering increased attention. We explore the impact of climate risk on employment adjustments using a dataset of small, medium and micro enterprises in China. Our findings indicate that as climate risk increases, employment adjustment rates increase, net employment growth rates decrease, and job destruction intensifies. These results remain robust in tests for endogeneity and robustness tests. Specifically, extreme weather events impact companies’ factories and production facilities, increasing operating costs and affecting overall production and sales. As a result, …

Afghan Allies In Limbo: Discrimination In The U.S. Immigration Response, Lindsay M. Harris, Yalda Royan

San Diego Law Review

After the fall of Kabul in August 2021, the U.S. government airlifted an estimated 120,000 people to safety from Afghanistan. An airlift of this scale was unprecedented, but also woefully inadequate as a solution to the Afghan humanitarian crisis. This Article, a contribution to participatory law scholarship, is written by a U.S. law professor and immigration expert and an Afghan woman evacuated from Afghanistan in 2021 and analyzes the United States’s immigration response to the Afghan humanitarian crisis following the Taliban takeover. While the United States granted humanitarian parole for two years to approximately 76,000 individuals, permitting them to enter …

This study aims to better understand WIC participants' perceptions about breastfeeding their babies in emergencies.

Methods: A chi-square test of independence was used to assess the association between breastfeeding choice and demographic characteristics and potential covariates of respondents. A post hoc analysis using Dunn's multiple comparisons test …

Deadly Deterrence: Border Patrol Authority, Pursuits, And Deported Witnesses, Shaw Drake Dec 2024

Deadly Deterrence: Border Patrol Authority, Pursuits, And Deported Witnesses, Shaw Drake

San Diego Law Review

Since 1994, the United States has perpetrated a border policy based on the idea that tougher enforcement will mean fewer people will cross the border—termed “prevention through deterrence.” But this idea has never fulfilled its stated aim and has turned into something resembling a border ideology rather than a border policy based in fact and reality. The results have been deadly.

This Article examines a small slice of the results of this deadly border policy as it looks at Border Patrol vehicle pursuits and the deportation of those who witness Border Patrol misconduct. It also provides an overview of the …
