Unintended Consequences: The Impact Of Apple Airtags On Vulnerable Populations, Camryn Bonetti
Unintended Consequences: The Impact Of Apple Airtags On Vulnerable Populations, Camryn Bonetti
Seattle Journal of Technology, Environmental, & Innovation Law
The rapid advancements in Global Positioning Systems (GPS), like those employed in Apple AirTags, have prompted a critical need for stringent privacy restrictions in tracking technologies. This article delves into the potential ramifications of such innovations, specifically addressing their impact on the issues of domestic violence, human trafficking, and theft. As women are disproportionately at risk, and have historically been underserved by protective legislation, the awareness of a need for comprehensive public policies and heightened awareness to protect vulnerable individuals is lacking. This article poses an in-depth exploration of these concerns and proposes solutions to be thoroughly examined, offering a …

The Illusory Coverage Doctrine Is Not A Doctrine At All (But It Should Be), Shannon W. Conway
The Illusory Coverage Doctrine Is Not A Doctrine At All (But It Should Be), Shannon W. Conway
Catholic University Law Review
The Illusory Coverage Doctrine, if it ever becomes a true legal doctrine, has the potential to be an incredibly useful tool in insurance law. But courts around the country take very different approaches to the doctrine, ranging from one end of the spectrum—a hard-nosed “pro-insurer” stance where coverage is not illusory so long as a policy provides any coverage—to the other—a muscular “pro-policyholder” public policy approach that requires coverage even if some other exclusion might have prevented coverage under the applicable policy. And along the spectrum are various other iterations, contributing to the complete lack of certainty or consistency about …
To Surmount Paramount Decrees By Degrees, Harry Kazenoff
To Surmount Paramount Decrees By Degrees, Harry Kazenoff
Catholic University Law Review
The United States Supreme Court in United States v. Paramount and the subsequent Paramount Decrees in 1948 were the federal government’s original attempt to address the consolidation and concentration of the movie production, distribution, and exhibition markets. The government reversed its decision in 2020 because of both changes in the film industry and a change in the legal application of antitrust law. There are two schools of antitrust law thought: structuralism and the consumer welfare standard. The former is concerned with market concentration and supports the Paramount Decrees, and the latter is concerned with prices for consumers and is skeptical …
All’S “Fair” In Love & Copyright: Copyright’S Incentivization Of Fiction Through The Second Fair Use Factor & Idea/Expression Dichotomy, Peyton J. Smetana
All’S “Fair” In Love & Copyright: Copyright’S Incentivization Of Fiction Through The Second Fair Use Factor & Idea/Expression Dichotomy, Peyton J. Smetana
Catholic University Law Review
Copyright Law is supposed to encourage authors to create works of authorship, both factual and fictional. However, Copyright jurisprudence has developed to only protect expression, and not idea, to ensure the continued dissemination of knowledge. In solidifying this belief, two doctrines—Fair Use and the idea/expression dichotomy—allow for individuals to utilize other works of authorship without it being considered copyright infringement. Though widely used throughout the judicial system, the analysis for both the second Fair Use factor—Nature of the Copyrighted Work—and the idea/expression dichotomy are left without clear guidelines, leaving judges with an insurmountable task of determining what is and is …

Turkish Journal of Biology
Background/aim: There is no specific pharmacological treatment regimen for idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF). Therefore, new anti-inflammatory therapeutic strategies are needed. Cannabinoids (CBs) that are known for their inflammation-modulating and anti-fibrotic effects may be potential medication candidates for the treatment of IPF. Our aim is to evaluate the inflammation-modulating and anti-fibrotic effects of CB receptor (CBR) agonists and antagonists in lipopolysaccharide (LPS) stimulated human lung healthy fibroblast, epithelial cells, IPF fibroblast cells and monocytes.Materials and methods: We detected CBRs in the human lung healthy (LL24) and IPF fibroblast cells (LL29), epithelial cells (A549) and monocytes (THP-1) by flow cytometry (FC). We …

Econometric Insights Into Lng Carrier Port Congestion And Energy Inflation: A Data-Driven Approach, Stavros Karamperidis, Konstantinos Melas, Nektarios Michail
Econometric Insights Into Lng Carrier Port Congestion And Energy Inflation: A Data-Driven Approach, Stavros Karamperidis, Konstantinos Melas, Nektarios Michail
Plymouth Business School
We examine how LNG carrier port congestion in European ports, measured via detailed vessel-level AIS data, affects euro area energy inflation. As energy inflation significantly affects headline inflation, this study provides an additional factor that can contribute to inflationary pressures. Overall, the results show that higher port congestion increases natural gas prices with the latter having an impact on energy inflation. The reaction stands at 0.1% per 1% shock in port congestion. These findings underline the relationship between the shipping industry and the real economy and support the view that shipping developments can potentially be used as leading indicators.
Philosophical Hermeneutic Approaches To Communication Studies, David Errera
Philosophical Hermeneutic Approaches To Communication Studies, David Errera
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation proposes the viability of philosophical hermeneutics as a theoretical framework for communication studies. It has five chapters that each develop this argument. The first chapter provides an overview and justification for the dissertation along with a review of the historical development of philosophical hermeneutics. This provides a sense of general themes and the theoretical basis for philosophical hermeneutics. The second chapter sets out to expound on the viability of philosophical hermeneutics to inform communication research as a form of research praxis. This chapter develops the three main themes from philosophical hermeneutics that this dissertation proposes to integrate into …
Challenges To Reproductive Justice: An Ethical Analysis Of Reproductive Technologies And Disparities, Courtney Brenner
Challenges To Reproductive Justice: An Ethical Analysis Of Reproductive Technologies And Disparities, Courtney Brenner
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation analyzes the Reproductive Justice Framework to describe possible solutions to the ethical challenges related to reproductive healthcare disparities. Various frameworks to support reproductive equity fail to address the challenges marginalized individuals face in accessing reproductive health services. The four ethical principles of autonomy, beneficence, nonmaleficence, and justice serve as foundational tools to support reducing these disparities. This dissertation uses the Reproductive Justice Framework to analyze the unequal distribution of harms among marginalized women. It highlights how access to care, such as Assisted Reproductive Technologies (ART), is disproportionately inaccessible to marginalized women. Then, it discusses the relationship between marginalized …

How Scientists Can Investigate Perception: Phenomenological Foundations For Qualitative Research, Kimberly Tucker
How Scientists Can Investigate Perception: Phenomenological Foundations For Qualitative Research, Kimberly Tucker
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
While medicine makes visible symptoms of disease, phenomenology provides a different tool for making illness experience visible. Phenomenology offers a tool for a new kind of description and a different kind of knowledge of disease. It holds a unique epistemic power through the descriptions it generates through the application of the transcendental phenomenological method. Husserl’s method, outlined in Ideas I, provides the steps for its implementation in clinical research. This dissertation explores the application of the transcendental phenomenological method as a foundation for research on perception, with the goal of characterizing phenomenological validity as a proper goal of medical epistemology. …
Teaching Video Game As A Leisure Skill To Arab American Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder Using Video Modeling In A School Setting, Lubna Alzayyat
Teaching Video Game As A Leisure Skill To Arab American Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder Using Video Modeling In A School Setting, Lubna Alzayyat
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Leisure activities are important in assisting individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) to build relationships, learn to behave socially appropriately, and acquire new interests- competences that assist in cultivating positive self-consciousness (Specht et al., 2002; Womack et al., 2011). Statistics indicate that 2.3% of 8-year-old children in the United States are diagnosed with ASD (CDC, 2021). Despite these large numbers and the tremendous benefits of engaging in leisure activities, participation in leisure activities is lower among children with ASD when compared to their typically developing peers (Ratcliff et al., 2018). The situation is worse when compared to children with ASD …
“Repeat A Little:” Time And Freedom In Deleuze’S Difference And Repetition, Mine Sak
“Repeat A Little:” Time And Freedom In Deleuze’S Difference And Repetition, Mine Sak
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In this dissertation, I examine Gilles Deleuze’s philosophy of time as presented in Difference and Repetition and use it to construct a concept of freedom, which is notably absent in his work. I argue that Deleuze’s exposition of the three syntheses of time provides significant insights for exploring the ontological possibility and structure of freedom. Through an analysis of his theory of the three syntheses of time, I investigate the meanings of agency, destiny, and choice within Deleuze's framework. I demonstrate that free choice necessitates both involuntary and creative action. Given the apparent tension between freedom and involuntariness, I explore …
Hidden Markov Model For Identifying Local Variants In Human Genomes Using Simulated Data, Scott Mccallum
Hidden Markov Model For Identifying Local Variants In Human Genomes Using Simulated Data, Scott Mccallum
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Identifying adaptive mutations in genetic data is challenging due to the low frequency of occurrence of such events, and because signatures of selection are intertwined with the footprints of various other evolutionary forces that shape our genomes. Even when a larger region appears to be under selection, genomic sites that are linked to adaptive mutations have similar statistical signals, and thus can obfuscate the identification of the actual adaptive mutation. The new method described here uses a Hidden Markov Model that allows for classification of neutral, linked, and sweep (adaptive mutation) genomic sites. This model is general and can be …
Wounded And Healing: Licensed Counselors’ Experience With Personal Suicide Loss And The Impact On Clinical Practice, Supervision, And Self-Disclosure, Shannon Strohl
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study sought to explore the lived experiences of licensed counselors who experienced personal suicide loss and the impact of their loss on their professional lives. Of particular interest was the impact of the loss on countertransference, professional direction and choices, and self-disclosure with clients and other professionals in the field (e.g., supervisors, professors, and colleagues). The concept of the wounded healer, as described by Zerubavel and Wright (2012), served as the theoretical framework used to understand the participants’ stories. Previous studies have examined the wounded healer among psychologists; however, few studies explored the experience of licensed counselors as wounded …

Method Development Of [3 + 2] Cycloadditions Using Tertiary Amine N-Oxides And Efforts Towards The First Total Synthesis Of Chrysosporazine D, Alexander Cocolas
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Nitrogen-containing heterocycles are ubiquitous in bioactive molecules, pharmaceutical drugs, and natural products. For this reason, finding new and efficient ways to make such compounds remains a high priority for the organic and medicinal community. Our current endeavors build upon previously established work by our group, where we generated 1,2-diamines by coupling commercially available aldehydes with trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO) in two steps. This route proved to be effective in generating 20+ novel 1,2-diamines and imidazolidines with a demonstrated ability to undergo transformations. Using this chemistry, we have developed a diastereoselective synthesis of 50+ novel 7-azanorbornanes using tertiary amine N-oxides …

Muslim Spirituality As A Foundation In Bioethics For Patient Encounters In Health Care, Sara Rahman
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Spirituality plays a major role in decision making for individuals with faith-based values. There is often hesitation to discuss the role of faith in healthcare as a core value and coping mechanism. The growing cultural diversity amongst patients and physicians has increased the need to understand eastern religious principles and incorporate them into bioethical guidance. Even as the 2nd largest religion in the world, Islam has not been sufficiently integrated into religious bioethics in western medicine. Muslim populations of patients and physicians are growing, increasing the need for better understanding of how Islamic principles impact healthcare delivery. Although Islamic law …
