Campus Police Legitimacy And Campus Crime Reporting: Moderating Effects Of Academic Major, James Earl Lyons Ii Jan 2024

Campus Police Legitimacy And Campus Crime Reporting: Moderating Effects Of Academic Major, James Earl Lyons Ii

Theses and Dissertations

Investigating crimes on college campuses is a prevalent phenomenon that often requires student cooperation with campus police. Using the procedural justice theory’s process-based approach, this applied research examined the likelihood of students reporting campus crime based on their perceived legitimacy of campus police and whether the student’s academic major moderated the relationship. The study used a quantitative, non-experimental design employing non-probability sampling methods.

Procedural justice is a theoretical approach that explains cooperation with police as the result of interactions. The theory asserts that regardless of the outcome, when citizens perceive interactions with police as procedurally just and fair, they are …

The Predictive Validity Of Sex Offender Treatment Progress Scale (Sotips) Using Iowa Sex Offenders, Holly Kelley-Chown

Theses and Dissertations

This study is a replication study of McGrath, Lasher, and Cumming's 2012 study. McGrath et al.'s population consisted of convicted Vermont sex offenders, while this replication study's population consisted of convicted Iowa sex offenders. Nearly 2,000 sex offenders are under the Iowa Department of Corrections community supervision (Daily Statistics-DOC Offender, 2023). Iowa uses SOTIPS, Static-99R, and the Iowa Risk Revised (IRR) to determine recidivism risk and supervision levels. The Static-99R was developed in Canada and has been validated in several jurisdictions, including Iowa (Statistical validation of the ISORA8 & Static-99 final report, 2010). The IRR was developed in Iowa using …

The Landing Park Of The Mid-American Steel: Bridging The Past And Future Through Soundscape Analysis, Muhammad Ashifur Rahman

Landscape Architecture Theses

Good soundscape quality in parks can only be provided with a thorough understanding of the complex relationships among sound, environment, and individuals. This study explores visitors' perceptions of the urban park soundscape to relieve stress. The study employed a mixed-methods approach consisting of an objective sound walk survey, a questionnaire survey, and a landscape design approach to improve sound quality in urban parks. Approximately 234 park visitor responses were obtained from online questionnaire surveys administered in the Fargo, North Dakota, region. Objective sound measurements were conducted at 53 survey spots on four different days, two days in the morning and …

Mind The Gap: Bridging A Community Bisected By An Interstate, Brittany Silver Jan 2024

Mind The Gap: Bridging A Community Bisected By An Interstate, Brittany Silver

Landscape Architecture Theses

As a result of discrimination in urban design, many communities of color have been forced to pick up the pieces of their neighborhood after they have been paved through by major interstate developments. Among these communities is the historical neighborhood of Bronzeville, Milwaukee, which was destroyed in the 1950s by discriminative urban planning and the development of Interstate 43. In recent years, there has been an uptake in restoration to these communities. Urban design factors such as land caps or land bridges over freeways have been proven successful in reconnecting the communities that have been bisected by interstates. In this …

Advancements In Glitch Subtraction Systems For Enhancing Gravitational Wave Data Analysis: A Brief Review, Mohammad Abu Thaher Chowdhury Jan 2024

Advancements In Glitch Subtraction Systems For Enhancing Gravitational Wave Data Analysis: A Brief Review, Mohammad Abu Thaher Chowdhury

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Publications

Glitches are transitory noise artifacts that degrade the detection sensitivity and accuracy of interferometric observatories such as LIGO and Virgo in gravitational wave astronomy. Reliable glitch subtraction techniques are essential for separating genuine gravitational wave signals from background noise and improving the accuracy of astrophysical investigations. This review study summarizes the main glitch subtraction methods used in the industry. We talk about the efficacy of classic time-domain techniques in real-time applications, like matched filtering and regression methods. The robustness of frequency-domain approaches, such as wavelet transformations and spectral analysis, in detecting and mitigating non-stationary glitches is assessed. We also investigate …

Dammed: Master Planning Along The Lower Snake River In A Post Dam-Removal Condition, Andrew Kodet Jan 2024

Dammed: Master Planning Along The Lower Snake River In A Post Dam-Removal Condition, Andrew Kodet

Landscape Architecture Theses

The four dams on the lower Snake River in Washington state have numerous impacts on the surrounding environment, and although provide benefits of hydroelectric power, irrigation services, and waterway navigation that alter the state of the river and adjacent land ecologically. The question that persists is if these structures need to be maintained, replaced, or removed altogether; since like all man-made structures, they have a finite lifespan that is approaching its end. The following research and methodologies address design solutions for these dam sites in a post-removal condition through case studies, site analysis, site planning, and design interventions from a …

A Green Energy Watershed: Water Litigation, Electric Batteries, And Agency Oversight Of Lithium Mining, Isaac Bloch Jan 2024

A Green Energy Watershed: Water Litigation, Electric Batteries, And Agency Oversight Of Lithium Mining, Isaac Bloch

Water Law Review

The United States is at the precipice of a rapid expansion of domestic lithium mining, which will be needed to meet the administration's stated goal of renewable energy independence. Fleets of electric vehicles will run on energy stored in lithium-ion batteries rather than petroleum. Lithium mining, however, normally requires vast quantities of local water resources, which places this element of the green energy transition at the heart of what is known as the water energy nexus. This Article examines recent water litigation around the Thacker Pass lithium mine in Nevada and argues that traditional lithium projects create substantial risks for …

Beyond Property: Towards New Legal And Physical Approaches To Water Equality, Melissa Kay Brown Jan 2024

Beyond Property: Towards New Legal And Physical Approaches To Water Equality, Melissa Kay Brown

Water Law Review

This Article proposes a multi-layered approach to ensuring equality of water access. The legal doctrines for managing water flow in the United States include the public trust doctrine. In contrast, many countries are beginning to establish personhood rights for water. Part I of this Article assesses the public trust doctrine and rights of personhood for water, recommending a hybrid approach. In Part II, this Article argues that establishing personhood rights for water essentially establishes a human right to water. Part III explores the injustices of hydropower and encourages a shift from big dams to small-scale damless hydropower, or hydrokinetics, to …
