Measuring The Purpose In Life In The Adult Population: A Scoping Review, Somrudee Arunjit, Karnsunaphat Balthip, Jos M. Latour

School of Nursing and Midwifery

Background: The purpose in life can motivate individuals to realize that life is essential for existence and well-being. Adults might experience crises that can lead to a lack of purpose in life. Consequently, promoting purpose in life is necessary, but it requires a suitable measurement scale. Objective: This scoping review aimed to identify and map the content, psychometric properties, and answer option scales of instruments intended to measure purpose in life in adult populations. Design: A scoping review was employed. Data Sources: The database used was PubMed. The libraries were APA PsycNet, Wiley Online Library, and Cochrane Library. The search …

A Novel Approach To Expedite Emergency Investigation For Suspected Cauda Equina Syndrome Referrals From Community And Primary Care Services: A Service Evaluation, Jonathon Gill, Sue Greenhalgh, Jos M. Latour, Stephen Pickup, Gillian Yeowell

School of Nursing and Midwifery

Introduction: Although a rare spinal emergency, cauda equina syndrome (CES) can result in significant physical, emotional, and psychological sequalae. Introducing a CES pathway enhances diagnosis but may increase Radiology and Orthopaedic workload. To address this, one NHS hospital in England introduced a novel CES pathway. Utilising a criteria-led pathway, patients were referred directly from community/primary care, via the Emergency Department, for an emergency MRI scan. Objective: To compare the outcomes of patients referred via an original and redesigned Community and Primary Care CES pathway. Design: A retrospective service evaluation was undertaken of all emergency MRI scans investigating suspected CES via …

The European Society of Intensive Care Medicine (ESICM) has developed evidence-based recommendations and expert opinions about end-of-life (EoL) and palliative care for critically ill adults to optimize patient-centered care, improving outcomes of relatives, and supporting intensive care unit (ICU) staff in delivering compassionate and effective EoL and palliative care. An international multi-disciplinary panel of clinical experts, a methodologist, and representatives of patients and families examined key domains, including variability across countries, decision-making, palliative-care integration, communication, family-centered care, and conflict management. Eight evidence-based recommendations (6 of low level of evidence and 2 of high level of evidence) and 19 expert opinions …

How And When Post Intensive Care Syndrome-Family Is Measured: A Scoping Review, Kati Hayes, Sam Harding, Bronagh Blackwood, Jos M. Latour

School of Nursing and Midwifery

Objectives: Family members of Intensive Care Unit (ICU) patients can experience mental health difficulties. These are collectively described as Post Intensive Care Syndrome-Family (PICS-F). There are no standardised outcome measures to benchmark the impact of PICS-F. This scoping review aimed to map and characterise interventions, outcomes, and outcome instruments related to PICS-F. Methods: Eight databases were searched in June 2023: Pubmed, CINAHL, Ovid Medline, EMBASE, PsycInfo, AMED, Emcare and Cochrane. The grey literature was also searched. Studies published after 2012 related to PICS-F were included. Search strategy included: (Population) family members of adult ICU patients, (Concept) PICS-F, (Context) ICU settings. …

Introduction: Little is known about replacement costs of care provided by informal carers during the last year of life for people dying of cancer and non-cancer diseases. Aim: To estimate informal caregiving costs and explore the relationship with carer and decedent characteristics. Design: National observational study of bereaved carers. Questions included informal end-of-life caregiving into the 2017 Health Survey for England including estimated recalled frequency, duration and intensity of care provision. We estimated replacement costs for a decedent’s last year of life valuing time at the price of a substitutable activity. Spearman rank correlations and multivariable linear regression were used …

Due to its haptic and interactive nature, virtual anatomy provides an opportunity for small-group learning, enabling students to develop their group work skills before they graduate. However, there is currently little practical guidance supported by pedagogic principles detailing how to incorporate it into curricula. Anatomy educators at the University of Plymouth conducted action research aiming to capture students' overall perceptions of the virtual anatomy platform Anatomage. Questioning the benefits and challenges students face while interacting with Anatomage prompted the creation of evidence-based interventions to be later evaluated. Although a plethora of themes were identified, this report specifically examines those relating …

The Policy And Politics Of Healthcare Corporatisation: The Case Of The English Nhs, Rod Sheaff, Pauline Allen, Mark Exworthy, Russell Mannion

Peninsula Medical School

Rationale: Few accounts of healthcare corporatisation examine the effects of the 2008 financial crisis. New Politics of the Welfare State (NPWS) theories recognise the relevance of crises but give more attention to programmatic than systemic (structural) retrenchment, and little to healthcare corporatisation. Objective: To examine what changes the 2008 financial crisis produced in the pattern of healthcare corporatisation, and the implications for NPWS theories. Methods: Using administrative data from the English NHS during 1995–2019 we formulated a multi-dimensional index of corporatisation, tested its validity, and used it to analyse longitudinally how the financial crisis affected the balance between the responsibilization …
