Introduction: Little is known about replacement costs of care provided by informal carers during the last year of life for people dying of cancer and non-cancer diseases. Aim: To estimate informal caregiving costs and explore the relationship with carer and decedent characteristics. Design: National observational study of bereaved carers. Questions included informal end-of-life caregiving into the 2017 Health Survey for England including estimated recalled frequency, duration and intensity of care provision. We estimated replacement costs for a decedent’s last year of life valuing time at the price of a substitutable activity. Spearman rank correlations and multivariable linear regression were used …

The Policy And Politics Of Healthcare Corporatisation: The Case Of The English Nhs, Rod Sheaff, Pauline Allen, Mark Exworthy, Russell Mannion Jan 2024

The Policy And Politics Of Healthcare Corporatisation: The Case Of The English Nhs, Rod Sheaff, Pauline Allen, Mark Exworthy, Russell Mannion

Peninsula Medical School

Rationale: Few accounts of healthcare corporatisation examine the effects of the 2008 financial crisis. New Politics of the Welfare State (NPWS) theories recognise the relevance of crises but give more attention to programmatic than systemic (structural) retrenchment, and little to healthcare corporatisation. Objective: To examine what changes the 2008 financial crisis produced in the pattern of healthcare corporatisation, and the implications for NPWS theories. Methods: Using administrative data from the English NHS during 1995–2019 we formulated a multi-dimensional index of corporatisation, tested its validity, and used it to analyse longitudinally how the financial crisis affected the balance between the responsibilization …

The Fourth Industrial Revolution was and s till is focused on digitalising processes and using AI to increase productivity. Industry 5.0, on the other hand, focuses on the human factor and the human as the centre of the production process. According to the new paradigm, technology should benefit humans, and human s, in turn, should actively collaborate with machines. In other words, while Industry 4.0 wa s based on the relationship between machines and IT systems, Industry 5.0 brings together the strengths of humans and machines. Following this train of thought, we have come up with the idea to initiate …

Film Here Now: Daily Filmmaking And The Path To Well-Being, Raul Alvarez Jan 2024

Film Here Now: Daily Filmmaking And The Path To Well-Being, Raul Alvarez

School of Art, Design and Architecture Theses

Film Here Now investigates the relationship between filmmaking and well-being with two specific aims: to illuminate how and why the process of making films inflicts stress on the filmmaker, and to determine what can be done within this process to prioritize the filmmaker’s well-being. My empirical framework of inquiry combines a particular filmmaking practice with a reflexive analysis of my experiences and observations. The practice component of my research consists of the daily production of films that adopt the aesthetic of Actualities, the minute long, single non-moving shot films by the Lumière Brothers, Thomas Edison and W. K. L. Dickson …

Wetlands make a disproportionately large contribution to global biodiversity and provide critical ecosystem services for humanity. Yet, our understanding of the cultural ecosystem services (CES) provided by wetlands remains limited, with benefits often only recognised at local scales. To address this knowledge gap, we conducted a global systematic review of wetland CES. Our synthesis addressed key questions related to the provision of CES by different types of wetlands, their economic value, their co-occurrence and associations with other ecosystem services, threats to the provision of CES by wetlands, as well as the availability and use of CES information. Based on 861 …

Early Childhood Education

Research in child development demonstrates that early childhood experiences, especially in the first 1,000 days of life, lay the foundation for future growth and development. In Indonesia, however, early childhood education programs traditionally focus on children aged 4-6 years. In response to this concern, Tanoto Foundation, through its Siapkan Generasi Anak Berprestasi (SIGAP) program, seeks to ensure optimal development and school readiness children in Indonesia. One of the key strategies of SIGAP is the establishment of Rumah Anak SIGAP centers, a model of a child development centre that provides parenting training and early stimulation services targeted to children aged 0-3 …

What Is Working And How Do We Know? Examining The Literacy Curriculum In An Elementary School After Years Of Filling The Holes: A Qualitative Study In Improvement Science, Kimberly Graven

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Administrators and teachers are overwhelmed with initiatives and expectations that they are supposed to juggle on a daily basis. When a problem of practice is identified, how do they know what to do about it? In this study, an administrator and leadership team members of a small, rural elementary school use Improvement Science as a framework to tackle their problem of practice.

Fluency reading proficiency scores have been on a slow decline at South Falls CSD over the past five to six years. Educators have been attempting to identify the holes in the curriculum and “filling the gaps” with various …

How Rural Identity, Self-Reliance, And Stoicism Relate To Attitudes Toward Mental Health Help-Seeking Among Iowans, Taylor Brown Jan 2024

How Rural Identity, Self-Reliance, And Stoicism Relate To Attitudes Toward Mental Health Help-Seeking Among Iowans, Taylor Brown

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Rural residents tend to seek help for psychological concerns at lower rates than urban residents (Caldwell et al., 2004; Kirby et al., 2019) despite similar rates of mental illness (Morales et al., 2020). Elevated stoicism and a preference for self-reliance may explain this decrease in help-seeking behaviors, as people in these communities may have a more self-reliant and stoic self-image and therefore be less willing to seek help. Thus, I designed a study to investigate whether rural identity correlated with self-reliance, stoicism, or attitudes toward psychological help-seeking and whether the relation between rural identity and help-seeking attitudes was mediated by …

Positioning Paperback Books As Americana: Cultural And Historical Impacts Of The Wadle Pocket Book Collection, Jake Volk

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The first book in the form of a codex was bound around 300 BCE, but the earliest material used to record writing appeared around 3000 BCE. From these documents recording proto-writing of human history, people have sought to analyze and preserve writing, which continues as a contemporary work of scholars across multiple disciplines to form the field of the history of the book. As the book changed physical form from illuminated manuscripts on vellum to cheaply produced, paperback books, which appeared in the early 1800s, historians have documented these changes; however, more analysis is needed to categorize and interpret how …

Dog-Training Programs For Incarcerated Women, Susan Grover Jan 2024

Dog-Training Programs For Incarcerated Women, Susan Grover

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Prison dog-training programs are a fairly new rehabilitative practice in women’s prisons. This study seeks to identify the effects dog-training programs have on women while incarcerated and then once reintegrated back into their family and community. This study includes an analytic literature review of the research on animal training programs and dog training programs in general. Most of the existing research, however, focuses on men and boys and shows that while prison-based dog-training programs are largely beneficial, they are less so for boys and do create unique vulnerabilities in men’s prisons. This study extends the previous research by examining the …

Boxes With Curves: The Necessity For School Leaders To Empower And Engage Through Culturally Competent Lenses, Priscilla Culp

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The purpose of this qualitative research study is to examine the experiences and perspectives of an urban elementary school principal in relation to culturally competent practices. As schools become increasingly diverse, school leaders must possess a number of cultural competencies to effectively administer and lead. Cultural competency, for this research, is defined as a set of congruent behaviors, attitudes, and policies that come together in a system, agency, or amongst professionals and enables that system, agency, or those professionals to work effectively in cross-cultural situations (Cross et al., 1989). Culturally competent school leaders realize the process of change begins with …

Impact Of Ai On The Hri Dynamic In Search And Rescue Operations Using Uav Swarms, Jordan Morrow, Maciej Jan Zawodniok, Anhar Sami Mohammed

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Artificial intelligence (AI) offers significant benefits in search and rescue applications by enhancing the efficiency and effectiveness of the search. However, an over-reliance on AI can hinder the operation due to biases embedded in the underlying algorithms. This partiality, if left un-monitored, can pose a risk to the safety of those in need of disaster relief. Typically manifests into inaccuracies in the decision-making processes and if not carefully monitored can cause larger issues. This paper extends the knowledge presented in a previous work, which presents the design and modeling of search and rescue operations using unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) swarms. …

Religion And Lgbtq Suicidality: A Systematic Review, Michael A. Goodman

Faculty Publications

Studies have consistently shown that LGBTQ individuals are at increased risk for several mental and physical health challenges including suicidality. The relationship between religion and LGBTQ wellbeing in general and LGBTQ suicidality in specific has increasingly been the subject of scholarly investigation. This systematic review examines all peer-reviewed articles included in the EBSCO PsychInfo database since 2000 (49 studies in all). These studies reveal a complex relationship which is both nuanced and at times contradictory. The majority of studies (65%) found at least one religiosity related predictor to be a risk factor for LGBTQ suicidality, 53% found at least one …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Leadership emergence is fraught with pervasive gender stereotypes, and women remain underrepresented in senior leadership roles, particularly in healthcare organisations. We apply ecological systems theory to explain how environmental factors enable or inhibit women’s leadership emergence in healthcare settings. We interviewed 17 senior female leaders in the Australian healthcare sector to explore how gender-related perceptions affected their leadership journeys. Five themes emerged that challenge existing narratives: men supported women’s advancement; women impeded other women’s progress; vulnerability was a leadership strength; ambitious women were ostracised; and women were ‘given’ leadership opportunities rather than actively pursuing them. By situating these findings within …
