Exploring The Philosophy Of Development Through UexküLl's Notion Of Umwelt, Yuhi Fujita
Exploring The Philosophy Of Development Through UexküLl's Notion Of Umwelt, Yuhi Fujita
Budhi: A Journal of Ideas and Culture
This paper aims to depict the development of human beings as a transformative relationship between individuals and their world. Anchored on Uexküll’s concept of the environment, “Umwelt,” and further developed through the works of Heidegger, Kokubun, and Merleau-Ponty, I present the relationship between man and the world through the formation of the world and the movement of organisms between Umwelts. For Heidegger, humans live while forming their own world whereas animals can only be “poor in world.” Kokubun further emphasizes that human beings live while moving through various Umwelts. But according to Merleau-Ponty, human bodies reconfigure their fields of action, …

Unmasking The 'New Normal' And The 'Vernacular Of The Veracious' During A Pandemic, Aurelio S. Agcaoili
Budhi: A Journal of Ideas and Culture
This paper argues that the deployment of a figurative language like the phrase “new normal” and many other verbal formulations during a pandemic is a form of power and control by political leaders. This deployment is calculated and calculating as it is meant to condition the minds of the masses that depend on the ruling political class for clarity, guidance, and some form of redemption. These “weaponized” words are presented as expressions of the veracious—essentially a vernacular of power—by persons of authority for a semblance of credibility. There are at least two versions of the veracious that are at play …

Doubting Thomas And Contemporary Education, Jovino De Guzman Miroy
Budhi: A Journal of Ideas and Culture
This paper aims to discuss what kind of training in doubt Filipino students require in the twenty-first century. To answer this question, the study alludes to the figure of Thomas the Doubter. Students often have a great deal of difficulty accepting the need to learn the skills of doubt and inquiry, making them more vulnerable to what Stuart Sim calls “empires of belief.” This essay discusses how reading Sacred Scriptures may lead to improved understanding of the dynamic relationships among inquiry, doubt, and belief. After explaining what doubt and skepticism mean, skepticism in the New Testament will be discussed. It …

Fitting Food To Circumstances: Potential Contributions Of Philippine Culinary Heritage To Disaster Risk Reduction, Felice Prudente Sta. Maria
Budhi: A Journal of Ideas and Culture
Cultural legacies include a society’s emergency preparedness. Geological hazards such as the movement of the West Valley Fault will result in a metadisaster. Food security is fundamental to community resilience, a strategy for disaster risk reduction. Heritage food practices may contribute to food security during emergencies and disasters. Seasonal weather conditions and natural calamities have forced continuing developments in Philippine cuisine. Convenience foods, home and urban gardening, as well as food preservation continue to be altered appropriately to variations in societal anxieties, aspirations, and hopefully now, disaster preparedness.
Berries In Baskets Versus Apples In Crates: Arguing For Ecocentrism In A Post-Covid World, Abhik Gupta
Berries In Baskets Versus Apples In Crates: Arguing For Ecocentrism In A Post-Covid World, Abhik Gupta
Budhi: A Journal of Ideas and Culture
The global outbreak of COVID-19 has raised questions about human relationships with nature vis-à-vis development models that are largely followed worldwide. Conservation biologist Raymond F. Dasmann introduced the concept of “ecosystem people” to describe predominantly rural communities who largely depend on the resources available in one or a few ecosystems around them. These societies are also characterized by their close relationships with nature and their ecocentric worldviews. However, the world today is dominated by “biosphere people” who populate the urban areas and typically use resources extracted from all over the world. This biosphere model of existence has also given rise …

Normalizing The Population: The Biopolitics Of The "New Normal", Federico José T. Lagdameo
Budhi: A Journal of Ideas and Culture
While the whole world is trying to get its bearings in the face of the radical changes brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic, two prevailing attitudes or approaches have emerged: (1) a yearning for a return to pre-COVID-19 normalcy typified by what I call the “typhoon-shelter approach” and (2) recognizing the irreversibility of the current condition and seeking to establish a “new normal.” The biopolitical analysis employed in this paper reveals unintended consequences that slip through the mesh of traditional forms of critique centered on capital, ideology, or class conflict. Specifically, the “new normal” project prevents the free movement of …
Disease And Disparities: The Structural Violence In The Time Of Our Covidized Lives, Aurelio S. Agcaoili
Disease And Disparities: The Structural Violence In The Time Of Our Covidized Lives, Aurelio S. Agcaoili
Budhi: A Journal of Ideas and Culture
The paper argues that when a country’s social structures— political, economic, and cultural—are arranged such that the arrangement results in a dichotomy between the class of the privileged and the class of the less privileged, any act of addressing a pandemic such as the COVID-19 will always end up in another pandemic: the pandemic of government neglect and ineptitude. There is only one way out in ensuring that this double pandemic can be addressed: a return to the foundations of a good life for all—a democracy that secures that the good of collective life is for all.

How Grading Systems, Classroom Management, And External Factors Affect A Students Intrinsic Motivation In The Classroom, Mckenzie L. Carrier
How Grading Systems, Classroom Management, And External Factors Affect A Students Intrinsic Motivation In The Classroom, Mckenzie L. Carrier
Honors Theses
The idea of motivation in the classroom is one that often ends up with the students who are often motivated by external factors rather than internal ones. Research increasingly demonstrates how this idea of extrinsic motivation has affected students, but intrinsic motivation is more effective for students in a long-term setting. This study will examine the influence of grading contracts and traditional grading on undergraduate students’ sense of motivation in their college ENG 102/102R classes by understanding how students define success, and their level of likeness to being motivated with a grading system. The researcher created and distributed an original …

A Phenomenological Case Study Of High School Administrator Perceptions Of Schoolwide Positive Behavior Interventions And Supports, Kimberly Renee Pittman
Student Theses and Dissertations
This phenomenological case study explores the perceptions of high school administrators who have implemented Schoolwide Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (SWPBIS) at the universal tier with fidelity. For this study, perceptions refer to the views and experiences of administrators implementing SWPBIS on the success and growth they have seen in their schools. The researcher was interested in determining whether these perceptions are related to the experienced successes. The study’s theoretical framework was derived from theories of motivation and reinforcement. SWPBIS is discussed in the study as a positive reinforcer to stimulate learners to show positive outcomes. It is also addressed …

Influence Of Teachers’ Secondary Traumatic Symptoms On Teacher Attrition In Low Socioeconomic Status Schools, Danielle Ryan Reilly
Student Theses and Dissertations
Influence of Teachers’ Secondary Traumatic Symptoms on Teacher Attrition in Low Socioeconomic Schools The current study investigated the pervasive issue of secondary traumatic symptoms (STS) among educators in South Carolina’s Title I secondary low socioeconomic status (SES) schools. The research problem centers on the influence of STS on teachers’ compassion fatigue (CF), burnout (BO), sense of satisfaction (SOS), and overall intention to resign (ITR) from the teaching profession. With the overarching goal of information interventions and support systems, the study was inspired by Ludick and Figley’s Compassion Fatigue Resilience (CFR) model and Figley’s work on CF. The current study employed …

Charging During The Stay: The Effects Of Ev Chargers’ Availability And Pricing On Consumer Perceived Utilitarian Value And Behavioral Intentions, Wenjia Han, Cass Shum, Guoguang Wan
Hospitality Faculty Research
Hotels are increasingly hosting EV chargers. Yet, scant research examines the effects of EV chargers on consumer behavioral intentions toward the hotel. This study draws on the expectancy theory and examines the effect of EV chargers availability and the availability of surrounding chargers on consumer hotel booking intentions and willingness to pay a price premium. The results of two scenario-based experiments showed that free or paid EV chargers enhance consumers’ perceived utilitarian value and behavioral intentions. The effects are partially amplified when the availability of surrounding chargers is limited. This research contributes to the literature on hotel add-on services and …

Defining The Hospital Social Worker’S Role And Geriatric Depression, Cara M. Galob
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Hospital readmissions, compliance issues, increased long-term nursing home placements, and social determinants of health are significant concerns that burden the hospital inpatient industry. A notable factor that may impact these outcomes is the surprisingly high rates of depression in older adults. In various settings, social workers have historically provided clinical assessments and interventions for people suffering from depression. This study examines how clinical social workers can be utilized in a hospital inpatient setting to identify and treat older adults suffering from major depression. Social work interventions can positively impact many hospitals' long-term goals, such as improving the patient experience, achieving …

Bridging High-Performance Work System And Hotel’S Innovation Performance: A Serial Mediation Of Human Resource Flexibility And Knowledge Absorptive Capacity, Saad Hassan, Fatima Tahir, Zeeshan Ahmed, Saqlain Raza, Muhammad Kashif Nawaz
Plymouth Business School
Purpose: The study advances research on the high-performance work system (HPWS) and innovation performance (IP) linkage by empirically analyzing the serial mediation of human resource flexibility (HRF) and knowledge absorptive capacity (KAC). Previous research on the HPWS–IP linkage underscores the presence of a “black box.” Therefore, the present study aims to unravel the underexplored HPWS–IP relationship through HRF and KAC mediation in the context of the hotel industry. Design/methodology/approach: Survey-based time-lagged data were collected from 303 mid-level managers in the hotel industry. Structural equation modeling (SEM) using Smart-PLS 4 was used to test hypothesized relationships. Findings: The results reveal that …
Validation Versus Gossip: A Fine Line Dilemma, Essraa Nawar
Validation Versus Gossip: A Fine Line Dilemma, Essraa Nawar
Library Articles and Research
"Years ago, a friend confronted me about something that shifted my perspective on communication. They told me I wasn’t validating them enough. Instead of listening to their frustrations, I would jump into 'fix-it' mode—offering solutions, mediating, or even defending the other person. At the time, I thought I was helping. But their frustration was clear: 'I don’t need you to solve this. I just need someone to listen.'
That feedback stayed with me. It made me wonder: What does it mean to validate someone’s feelings? Is listening enough? And what happens when validation crosses the line into gossip? This is …

Staff Education Presentation: Addressing Polypharmacy As A Risk Factor For Falls Among Older Adults With Psychiatric Disorders, Yetunde E. Adegoroye
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The focus of this doctoral project was to address the practice problem of polypharmacy and its association with falls among older adults with psychiatric conditions. The existing evidence shows that polypharmacy, which is defined as the concurrent use of five or more medications, increases the risk of falls, which leads to hospitalization, higher healthcare costs, and reduced quality of life (Varghese et al., 2024). Within the practice setting, it is Crucial to manage polypharmacy to enhance patient safety. The purpose of this project was to enhance medical staff knowledge regarding effective evidence-based strategies for reducing polypharmacy, through an educational presentation. …

Effectiveness Of Interventions To Address Nursing Students' Mental Health: An Integrative Review, Aimee Dickson, Shelby Carter
Effectiveness Of Interventions To Address Nursing Students' Mental Health: An Integrative Review, Aimee Dickson, Shelby Carter
Master's Projects
Background:
The rigors of the nursing school curriculum are associated with higher levels of stress, anxiety, and depression, resulting in unhealthy habits and ineffective coping strategies that lead to initial difficulties in the academic environment and burnout as professional nurses advance into their careers. This phenomenon further burdens the already taxed workforce, leading to ongoing turnover and compromising care. This integrative review aims to look at what coping strategies have proven most successful in fostering nursing students' well-being, leading to lifelong practices that promote strength while addressing the rigors of academia and, later, the workforce.
Methods:
The literature review search …
Influence Of Officers’ Race, Suspects’ Characteristics, And Arrest Contexts On Police Homicide Victim Risk Factors, Dominique Damon Block
Influence Of Officers’ Race, Suspects’ Characteristics, And Arrest Contexts On Police Homicide Victim Risk Factors, Dominique Damon Block
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Media attention on the fatal use of force by law enforcement personnel has worsened the divide amongst the police and minority communities, intensifying the lack of confidence between groups. Further research is called for to understand how the fatal use of force by law enforcement is influenced by officer race, suspect race, and characteristics of the alleged crime. Implicit bias theory and procedural justice theory were used as theoretical and conceptual frameworks. The three research questions examined the extent to which characteristics of the officer, characteristics of the alleged perpetrator, and circumstances of the homicide predicted (a) perpetrator mental illness, …
