Background
Despite the recognised links between food insecurity and parenting, few studies have evaluated the perceived impacts of livelihood or food security interventions on parental practices, intra-household functioning, adolescent behaviour and psychosocial outcomes in HIV-affected households in sub-Saharan Africa.
Aims
The study aimed to understand the perceived effects of food security on parenting practices and how this was experienced by both adolescent girls (aged 13–19 years) and their caregivers in rural Kenya.
Method
We conducted semi-structured, individual interviews with 62 caregiver–adolescent dyads who were participants in the adolescent Shamba Maisha (NCT03741634), a sub-study of adolescent girls and caregivers with a …
Evolving Philanthropy Among The Chinese In The Philippines: Then And Now, Jane T. Yugioksing
Evolving Philanthropy Among The Chinese In The Philippines: Then And Now, Jane T. Yugioksing
Chinese Studies Department Faculty Publications
A long history of charitable acts among overseas Chinese especially in the Southeast Asian region, labeled as “diasporic philanthropy,”1 gathered more scholarly attention in recent years. In the Philippines, the complex Chinese diaspora communities layered from first to fifth-generation overseas Chinese to the new Chinese immigrants (NCI) present themselves with multifaceted means of giving back either to their home country or host country. Bearing a sojourner’s mentality, the first generation of Chinese instituted most of their philanthropic action alongside the interest of the motherland, while the succeeding generations navigate their cultural identity and find themselves in the intersection of giving …

Script training is a speech-language intervention designed to promote fluent connected speech via repeated rehearsal of functional content. This type of treatment has proven beneficial for individuals with aphasia and apraxia of speech caused by stroke and, more recently, for individuals with primary progressive aphasia (PPA). In the largest study to-date evaluating the efficacy of script training in individuals with nonfluent/agrammatic primary progressive aphasia (nfvPPA; Henry et al., 2018), robust treatment effects were observed, with maintenance of gains up to one year post-treatment. However, outcomes were constrained to measures of script accuracy, intelligibility, and grammaticality, providing a limited view of …

Improving Pediatric Magnetic Resonance Imaging Safety By Enhanced Non-Technical Skills And Team Collaboration, Masashi Uramatsu, Hidekuni Takahashi, Paul Barach, Yoshikazu Fujisawa, Megumi Takahashi, Shiro Mishima, Gaku Yamanaka
College of Population Health Faculty Papers
BACKGROUND: Safe pediatric magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) ideally relies on non-sedative techniques, as avoiding risky sedation is inherently safer. However, in practice, sedation often becomes unavoidable, particularly for younger children or those with anxiety, to ensure motion-free, high-quality imaging. This narrative review explores the current practices and proposes strategies to enhance safety in pediatric MRI examinations.
METHODS: We identified and analyzed 247 studies addressing various aspects of pediatric MRI safety, including sedation protocols, patient monitoring, and team-based management approaches.
RESULTS: Safe sedation requires careful drug selection tailored to individual needs, continuous monitoring, and robust emergency preparedness. While efforts are underway …
Living With Quadriplegia: A Journey Of Personal And Professional Development, James Arkwright
Living With Quadriplegia: A Journey Of Personal And Professional Development, James Arkwright
Heroism Science
In this article, I provide an autoethnographic account of the discursive and narrative changes I have experienced and the agency I have found, following an accident thirty-seven years ago that resulted in permanent spinal cord injury. Initially losing my career and identity as a farmer, my hope and survival depended on adopting new frameworks of understanding – both in terms of the physical realities of living with incomplete quadriplegia and in becoming subjectively positioned quite differently than I was as an able-bodied male with farming knowledge and skills. In more recent years, as my spinal health and mobility have deteriorated, …
Can Animal Consciousness Be Resolved Scientifically?, Yoram Gutfreund
Can Animal Consciousness Be Resolved Scientifically?, Yoram Gutfreund
Animal Sentience
Carolyn Ristau's biography of Donald Griffin is a comprehensive work that sheds light on a seminal chapter in the history of ethology—the ambitious attempt to establish a research field dedicated to animal consciousness. Although Donald Griffin's endeavor ultimately fell short of its revolutionary goals, it catalyzed significant progress in understanding evolution and mechanisms of animal cognition.
Beyond Human Perception: The Remarkable Science Of Donald R. Griffin, Gareth Jones
Beyond Human Perception: The Remarkable Science Of Donald R. Griffin, Gareth Jones
Animal Sentience
Carolyn Ristau shows how Donald Griffin’s revolutionary science sometimes progressed from ridicule, to opposition, to being self-evident. Griffin’s work involved phenomena beyond human perception, making it sometimes difficult for others to fathom. His work on ultrasonic echolocation, navigation and animal cognition has shifted established paradigms. His ‘zoomorphic’ approach provides a realistic framework for understanding how other animals perceive the world.
Serendipity In Non-Profit Founding And The Healing Response Of Two Servant-Leaders To Crises Of Migration, Michael T. Von Behren
Serendipity In Non-Profit Founding And The Healing Response Of Two Servant-Leaders To Crises Of Migration, Michael T. Von Behren
International Journal of Servant-Leadership
This article explores the intersection of non-profit founding with elements of servant-leadership. Drawing upon current research in social entrepreneurship and non-profit founding, the article reflects on these in light of the stories of two selfless individuals, Varian Fry and Enrique Morones, whose lives of servanthood spawned the founding of two influential organizations: the Emergency Rescue Committee (ERC) and the Border Angels. While sharing the stories of these organizations, and of their founding, this article highlights issues of immigration offering a healing perspective through five themes of servant-leadership articulated by Robert K. Greenleaf revealed in the lives of these non-profit founders. …

Servant-Leadership As A Pathway To Success For Foreign-Born Leaders, Ashley Davis
International Journal of Servant-Leadership
Immigrants have consistently been recognized as significant contributors to the United States economy, science, and innovation (Vandor & Franke, 2016). However, there remains a noticeable gap in the literature regarding the experiences and leadership development process of foreign-born leaders (FBLs). This article addresses this gap by highlighting the positive contributions of FBLs while noting the relatively small pool of effective FBLs in comparison to the large immigrant population in the United States, suggesting substantial untapped potential. The author explores common challenges faced by FBLs and emphasizes that overcoming these obstacles is integral to FBLs’ leadership development journey. The central argument …

Listening To The Soul’S Whisper: Embracing Silence In Coaching, Carolyn S. Roark, Chaya S. Abelsky
International Journal of Servant-Leadership
While writings have centered on the role of silence in the coach–client relationship, the practice of listening to one’s soul is a topic that has been scantily covered in the literature. Building on a foundation of servant–leadership, emotional intelligence, and the Johari Window along with coaching techniques, this article focuses on the importance of listening to one’s soul to uncover one’s life blueprint. It is imperative for both professional coaches and clients to make a commitment to take the time to incorporate the daily practice of listening to one’s soul to unearth the wisdom and uncover the buried values found …
Humility And Servant-Leadership: Toward A Solution Of Pastoral Narcissism, Luke W. R. Bryant
Humility And Servant-Leadership: Toward A Solution Of Pastoral Narcissism, Luke W. R. Bryant
International Journal of Servant-Leadership
The world contains healthy and toxic leaders, and these leaders make an impact—for better or worse—on their followers. While healthy Christian pastors may exude humility and positively affect congregants, the issue of narcissism among pastors is more prevalent than one may expect. This article explores the literature related to humility, servant-leadership, and narcissism—painting the ideal of humble pastors, linking the ideal with servant-leadership, presenting the problem of narcissistic pastors, and moving toward the beginning stages of proposed solutions. Depending on the severity level, churches may opt for a period of renewed growth from the pastor or outright replacement of the …
Servant-Leadership, Self-Reflection, And Self-Transcendence, Ryan Schmidt
Servant-Leadership, Self-Reflection, And Self-Transcendence, Ryan Schmidt
International Journal of Servant-Leadership
Whether it be income, gender, or race inequity, the gap between the haves and have-nots in the United States continues to increase, yet most people remain only concerned with themselves (Singh, 2012). Even without intention, injustice can fester. Following Robert Greenleaf’s (1977/2002) premise that caring for others is the foundation of a good society, servant-leadership provides a vision for doing the necessary inner work to achieve self-awareness before engaging with the outer work of the world. When individuals better understand the conditions governing their thoughts, feelings, and actions, the potential exists to achieve self-transcendence, re-orienting their lives outward in the …
The Church’S Failure To Embrace All Of God’S Beloved Creation, Kalif Crutcher
The Church’S Failure To Embrace All Of God’S Beloved Creation, Kalif Crutcher
International Journal of Servant-Leadership
The primary aim of this article was to describe how the policies regarding same-sex marriage and unions in the Christian Methodist Episcopal church are exclusionary and oppressive. There are studies that reference the psychological and spiritual harm that the church causes when queer individuals are not embraced. Nevertheless, a secondary goal of this article is share how the church, through servant-leadership principles can explore forgiveness seeking and an affirmative theological position of inclusion whereby queer congregants are cared for and supported.
Bridging The Tragic Gap With Servant-Leadership: An Exploration Of Stewardship And Healing, Jamie Noling-Auth
Bridging The Tragic Gap With Servant-Leadership: An Exploration Of Stewardship And Healing, Jamie Noling-Auth
International Journal of Servant-Leadership
This article utilizes servant-leadership theory to engage with the leadership predicament that theologian Parker Palmer calls “the tragic gap”—the disparity between a hopeful vision for good and the reality of humanity’s propensity for violence. Utilizing two of servant-leadership theory’s ten characteristics, this article explores how stewardship and healing might serve the servant-leader who wishes to bridge the tragic gap. Through a survey of interdisciplinary literature, this article concludes that essential actions of stewardship and healing include: honoring human dignity, care-giving, love, responsibility, and forgiveness.

International Journal of Servant-Leadership
This article examines the servant-leadership of Martin Luther King Jr. through a book review of Jonathan Eig’s landmark biography King: A Life and an interview with the author. The article begins with a reflection on King’s servant-leadership through Greenleaf’s notions of power, strength, and growth through loss. Implications for servant-leader moral development based on reports of possible ethical failures by King are also considered.

Lessons From Servant-Leadership To End Violence Against Women, Federico Benazzo
International Journal of Servant-Leadership
This article begins by recalling the tragic loss of Giulia Cecchettin, an Italian university student who was brutally murdered by her ex-boyfriend. The exploration delves into the cultural and societal factors that contribute to violence against women, with an emphasis on the role of personal responsibility in perpetuating these harmful dynamics. It proposes the concept of servant-leadership as a means to counteract male dominance and work towards achieving gender equality. The research underscores the importance of self-reflection and forgiveness in understanding and altering individual contributions to gender violence. The final section explores the intersection between servant-leadership and the ethics of …
Persuasion Vs. Coercion Or Persuasion And Coercion, Jiying Song
Persuasion Vs. Coercion Or Persuasion And Coercion, Jiying Song
International Journal of Servant-Leadership
This article explores the nuanced distinctions between persuasion and coercion through Robert K. Greenleaf’s 1977 article “Overcome Evil with Good.” Greenleaf’s comparisons of John Woolman, John Whittier, and Mohandas Gandhi highlight the complexities and consequences of their methods in combating societal evils. Woolman’s gentle persuasion contrasts with Whittier’s fiery abolitionism and Gandhi’s nonviolent resistance, which Greenleaf critiques as coercive and leading to violence. The article examines the controversy sparked by Greenleaf’s views, including reader responses and the impact on his subsequent writings, supported by unpublished manuscripts and correspondence from Greenleaf’s archives. It engages with philosophical perspectives on persuasion and coercion, …

The Practice Of Servant-Leadership In Academic Advising, Jeffrey L. Mcclellan
International Journal of Servant-Leadership
Servant-leadership and academic advising are closely related concepts. Both are concerned with supporting the growth and development of others through intentional influence processes. While some research has been done to explore the conceptual connections between them, little has been done to identify the specific practices of servant-advisors. This article examines the principles and practices of servant-leadership and offers insight regarding specific practices of servant-leadership that relate to academic advising. These include managing one’s motives, relationship building, compassionate communication, and positive coaching.

Praise be to God, and may blessings and peace be upon the Messenger of God, his family, his companions, and those who follow him until the day we meet him. It is in harmony with human nature, so the title of this article was: (Islam does not prohibit homosexuality), and they mentioned suspicions that are similar to a spider\'s thread for the Muslim who has the slightest insight and knowledge of the spirit of this religion and its wise purposes. This research included an introduction in which I mentioned the meaning of homosexuality, introduced the personalities

Homosexuality From An Islamic Ethical Perspective, Saleh Mahdi Jaber Al-Dhalimi
Uruk Journal of Human Sciences
Research into the issue of homosexuality is an important matter because this issue has a direct impact on the individual, the family, and society, as it is considered a form of homosexuality, which is represented by the presence of feelings and desire to have sex with people of the same sex, man to man and woman to woman.
Homosexuality And The Position Of Sharia On It: A Comparative Jurisprudential Study, Raghed Mahdi Abdul Ami
Homosexuality And The Position Of Sharia On It: A Comparative Jurisprudential Study, Raghed Mahdi Abdul Ami
Uruk Journal of Human Sciences
The issue of homosexuality is a factor in the collapse of society, the insult to its dignity, and the spread of fatal diseases. For this reason, sound nature is repelled by an innate, not an immoral, aversion, because this nature is governed by God’s law in life, which makes natural pleasure while helping to grow life. Its spread was terribly in many societies, so it was necessary to research it to find out the reasons for its spread and treat it. There are many reasons that prompted me to choose the topic, including

The Phenomenon Of Ruling That Women Are Like Men In Islamic Legislation, Sakina Hussein Kazim
Uruk Journal of Human Sciences
The Holy Law created man with a sound nature, implanted desires in him, and created paths for him to channel these desires. However, he divided this path into lawful and forbidden. Whatever is close to man’s nature is lawful, and whatever is far away is forbidden. The misguidance that a person may follow is to use... What God created for him of body and mind for a purpose other than that specified for it, such as using his sexual organs for other than what they were created for, is a difference in the physical period, and some transgress and transgress …

God Almighty said: (And the male is not like the female) (Al Imran: 36) God Almighty created His creatures, in this vast universe, according to controls and laws, which He chose with His wisdom and justice, to regulate their affairs by them, so each of them exercises its role in what God Almighty wanted, obedience, closeness, obedience, and compliance. He is the one who said: (And I did not create the jinn and mankind except to worship Me) (Al-Dhariyat: 56), and this worship is nothing but submission and submission to the
An Examination Of Followers’ Motivation To Serve As An Antecedent Of Servant-Leadership In Uk Organisations, Ijeoma G. Ukeni
An Examination Of Followers’ Motivation To Serve As An Antecedent Of Servant-Leadership In Uk Organisations, Ijeoma G. Ukeni
International Journal of Servant-Leadership
Motivation to serve is conceptualised as an antecedent of servant-leadership but is mostly studied from the leaders’ perspective. Yet, as in any dyadic relationship, exploring the followers’ perspective is crucial, particularly as servant-leadership is an acclaimed follower-centric leadership theory. Hence, this quantitative study is a departure from the norm with a focus on the followers’ motivation to serve (MTS). Premised on the social learning theory, data was collected from 208 respondents in UK private and public organisations using existing and adapted questionnaire surveys that were statistically analysed. The results show a correlation between motivation to serve and servant-leadership but suggest …
Beyond Average Effects In Education Research Syntheses: Explaining Heterogeneity Of Concept Mapping Research In Science Education Through Meta-Regression Modeling, Aaron Wenger
Dissertations
Contemporary education research seeks causal inferences in order to guide policy and practice. Often well-controlled quasi-experimental and experimental designs are used as they are very useful for supporting and contextualizing causal inferences. Nevertheless, individual studies, even high-quality, resource-intensive randomized controlled trials, are not able to establish generalized claims. Because primary studies vary over dozens of variables (e.g., grade, subject, duration) simply conducting additional primary studies cannot change this. Furthermore, the informal assessments of primary studies common in literature reviews are unable to resolve certain challenges (e.g., publication bias) that are described in the emerging field of meta-research. These challenges require …
Conceptualizing Self-Reported Adverse Childhood Experiences: From Epidemiologic Exposure To Psychometric Latent Variable, Marianna D. Lanoue, Richard W. Hass
Conceptualizing Self-Reported Adverse Childhood Experiences: From Epidemiologic Exposure To Psychometric Latent Variable, Marianna D. Lanoue, Richard W. Hass
College of Population Health Faculty Papers
In this paper, we apply a measurement science perspective to explore both the epidemiologic and psychometric frameworks for the conceptualization, operationalization and assessment of self-reported adverse childhood experiences (srACEs). The epidemiologic paradigm suggests that srACEs are 'exposures', while the psychometric paradigm views responses on srACEs instrumentation as 'indicators'. It is the central premise of this paper that srACEs cannot be both exposures and indicators of scales. We review issues of reliability and validity from both perspectives, examine the degree of agreement between objective and subjective reports of childhood maltreatment and the implications of poor agreement, and conclude that the for …

A Survey On Attitudes Of Rehabilitation Professionals On The Use Of Immersive Gamification Technology Systems In Therapy, Anna Mae U. Consing, Maria Eliza R. Aguila
Philippine Journal of Physical Therapy
Introduction. Immersive gamification technology systems (ImGTS) are used among patients with physical impairments in different practice settings. Studies have shown moderate evidence for the effectiveness of ImGTS in improving functional outcomes. However, studies are scarce on the use of ImGTS by rehabilitation professionals in clinical practice. Thus, this study aimed to determine attitudes of rehabilitation professionals in using ImGTS in rehabilitation.
Methods. This cross-sectional descriptive survey utilized a self-administered online questionnaire, the modified Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT) Questionnaire, to determine perceptions on performance expectancy, effort expectancy, social influence, and facilitating conditions on using ImGTS for …

Another One: On The Syntax Of ‘Alternative One’, Ester Luna
Yale Working Papers in Grammatical Diversity
This paper discusses the use of one as a disjunction marker occurring immediately after a DisjP, such as He was in Tennessee or Kentucky, one. Little research has been published on this construction, which is used predominantly by Southern American English speakers. My project aims to fill this gap in the literature by describing the distribution of one and examining various hypotheses for its syntactic derivation using data from Montgomery (2004) and the Yale Grammatical Diversity Project. Based on my descriptive analysis, I propose to treat this "alternative one" as a proform and matrix clause adjunct.

Hiring, Training, And Retaining Mental Health Professionals At Rural Wisconsin Correctional Facilities, Jessica Kallenbach
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Correctional facilities in rural Wisconsin have noted a shortage of trained mental health professionals to provide care. Common barriers to providing mental health services in rural areas are the availability and accessibility of mental health professionals. Due to limited access to financial and career benefits, mental health professionals tend to avoid working in these areas. The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study was to explore the lived experience of mental health professionals, administrators, and supervisors in hiring, training, and retaining staff in rural Wisconsin correctional facilities. Bandura’s social learning theory was used to guide the study. Data was collected from …
