The Voice Of The Voiceless: Countering The Festival And Elevating Reyog Obyokan As Cultural Capital, Albert Tallapessy, Ikwan Setiawan

Paradigma: Jurnal Kajian Budaya

This article examines two performance models of Reyog Ponorogo: the festival model and the obyokan model. These two competing models represent differing perspectives on one side, the interests of the artists and the community, and on the other, the interests of the state. By applying cultural studies theories, particularly those of representation and hegemony, this study analyzes data collected through observations of Reyog performances at both festival and obyokan events, as well as interviews with artists and community members. The findings reveal that the obyokan model emphasizes an egalitarian spirit, allowing artists greater aesthetic freedom and providing the community with …

Amplifying Ratego Stories And Knowledges: A Co-Research Initiative With Young Mothers In Social Movements In East Africa, Deborah Mrema, Patricia Nudi Orawo, Lydia Otieno, Juhi Jha, Joseph Kalisa, Serge Nyirinkwaya

The Qualitative Report

Young mothers can be negatively affected by dominant and degrading cultural narratives; their stories of resistance and activism are often rendered invisible in broader social contexts. Informed by collective narrative practice methodologies, we undertook a counter-storytelling research project to elicit and acknowledge the stories of survival and sustenance of young mothers in social movements responding to sexual and gender-based violence in East Africa. We facilitated storytelling circles, incorporating various story and knowledges collection methods. Our approach involved documenting collective experiences and counter-narratives, exchanging stories between communities, and inviting young mothers to respond to other participants’ stories. The telling and retelling …

Background: The advantages of breastfeeding and its role in emergencies are undeniable. Studies show that many women in developed countries choose formula over breastmilk, even in emergencies. Nevertheless, no one knows if postpartum women under the Women, Infants and Children (WIC) program turned out to breastfeed or re-lactate their infants during these crises. This study aims to better understand WIC participants' perceptions about breastfeeding their babies in emergencies.

Methods: A chi-square test of independence was used to assess the association between breastfeeding choice and demographic characteristics and potential covariates of respondents. A post hoc analysis using Dunn's multiple comparisons test …

Refereed Research: A Sufficientarian Approach To Consumption Ethics In The Face Of Climate Change, Srinivas Venugopal, Ronika Chakrabarti

Subsistence Marketplaces

In this paper, we adopt a sufficientarian ethics approach to study the concern of consumption inadequacy engendered by climate change in subsistence communities. The sufficientarian approach to consumption ethics dictates that in the face of climate change, priority should be afforded to establishing and maintaining consumption adequacy in low-income settings. We elaborate on the basic principles underlying sufficientarian ethics and compare it to alternative approaches such as utilitarian ethics and prioritarian ethics. Subsequently, we turn our attention toward specifying how poverty and the deleterious impact of climate change combine to render subsistence communities more vulnerable to consumption inadequacies as compared …

No One Lives In The Future: Family Dynamics And Environmental Discourse, Morgan Vanek Dec 2024

No One Lives In The Future: Family Dynamics And Environmental Discourse, Morgan Vanek

ABO: Interactive Journal for Women in the Arts, 1640–1830

In the context of catastrophic climate change, the optimism that underpins our economic models for calculating the future cost of present risks has become both untenable and dangerous. Nonetheless, even writing urgently concerned with these risks continues to invoke a version of the Child as a figure of futurity that appears to naturalize both this optimism and our present inaction. In this essay, I argue that we might find another path forward by looking back to the eighteenth-century stories that seem to demonstrate a similar preoccupation with children in danger. Taking Hogarth’s A Harlot’s Progress as a representative example, I …

ABO: Interactive Journal for Women in the Arts, 1640–1830

Margaret Cavendish, a prolific author and natural philosopher, defies categorization with her multifaceted contributions to literature and philosophy. While she is recognized for her groundbreaking work in various academic fields, her literature also resonates within the realms of science fiction, weird fiction, and speculative genres. This essay explores innovative approaches to teaching Cavendish's work, particularly within the realm of speculative literature, using an interdisciplinary lens. Drawing on perspectives including monster theory and the concept of the abject, students are prompted to critically engage with Cavendish's texts. By examining themes such as the monstrous, the supernatural, and the occult, students uncover …

Jumping Pens And Historical Vertigo: Teaching Cavendish In The Twenty-First Century, Anne M. Thell Dec 2024

Jumping Pens And Historical Vertigo: Teaching Cavendish In The Twenty-First Century, Anne M. Thell

ABO: Interactive Journal for Women in the Arts, 1640–1830

"Jumping Pens" considers "historical and epistemological vertigo" as a useful pedagogical rubric for teaching the works of Margaret Cavendish (1623-73) in contemporary university classrooms. Specifically, it looks back across more than a decade of teaching Cavendish in diverse settings in order to show how exciting this author can be for students who are just starting out in the discipline of literary studies. As this essay argues, Cavendish can make us all better, more self-aware instructors, while also developing critical and historical acumen in our students.

Leading Towards The Queerest Insurrection: Queer Anarchism And Leadership Studies, Josie Holland Dec 2024

Leading Towards The Queerest Insurrection: Queer Anarchism And Leadership Studies, Josie Holland

Interdisciplinary Journal of Leadership Studies

Leadership shapes our world, our narratives, and what is possible to imagine. Unfortunately, leadership studies has some trouble imagining queer leadership, or rather, queer theory and leadership studies. In order to integrate the more abstract aspects of queer theory with the largely evidence-based field of leadership studies, I draw on the texts, history, practices, and theory of queer anarchism. This article aims to highlight a gap in leadership studies as it currently stands, and through accounting for the absence of queer anarchism in leadership studies, expand what leadership looks like. To this end, I suggest the framing of ‘leadership acts’ …

Utilitarian And Self-Representational: Player-To-Player Character Relationships In Final Fantasy Xiv, Zu Er Guan

Theses

This thesis studies the relationships between video game players and their player characters, the characters that they control, through the lens of player purpose and intent by conducting research using an online survey developed and analyzed using an interdisciplinary methodology based on existing studies in the field regarding avatar identification, player psychology, and queer and feminist theory. This thesis posits that are two types of player relationships with their player characters based on player intent—player characters as the personal avatar and representation of the self, and player characters as a tool for the execution of player control and gameplay experience. …

Course Structure And Social Outcomes Of Teaching Older Adults To Play Piano In A Group Setting: A Case Study Of Chinese Elderly Participants, Pinlin Liu, Derek Polischuk, Bob Lee

Visions in Leisure and Business

As the aging population continues to grow, a significant concern for this demographic is their living arrangements. Many older adults prefer to remain in their own homes after retirement rather than transition to long-term care facilities. However, the desire for independent living, particularly among the very elderly, often leads to social disconnection and the risk of social isolation. Facilitating opportunities for social engagement is essential to maintaining the social well-being of older adults. Research underscores the role of leisure activities in fostering skill development and social interaction. In this study, group-based piano lessons were introduced as a platform for older …

Fair Wage: An Analysis Of Executive Compensation Through The Lens Of Catholic Social Teaching, James Martin, Mariah Webinger, Brian M. Saxton

Journal of Management for Global Sustainability

The controversy surrounding executive compensation has received attention in the popular press and academic literature. We explore executive compensation through the lens of Catholic Social Teaching (CST), outline the basic principles of CST and compare and contrast them with corporate social responsibility (CSR), and identify human dignity, in contrast to profit maximization, to be the differentiator between the two. Next, we use CST to develop a model for measuring excessive executive compensation. We then conduct a cluster analysis of our measure of excessive compensation with another CST variable: investment in employees. Lastly, we examine differences in the clusters regarding environmental …

Exploring Predictors Of Purchase Intention Toward Plant-Based Meat, Kristiana Ginelle D. Monares, Ken Sean D. Roque, Melissa A. Santos, Sofia Marianne S. So, Catherine A. Valentin, Alvin Patrick M. Valentin

Journal of Management for Global Sustainability

Plant-based meat (PBM) presents itself as a sustainable alternative to meat production systems that have adversely impacted consumers’ health and the environment at large. In the Philippine context, however, there are only a few PBM manufacturers to date even though production has been emerging with expanded options for consumers to consider. Moreover, while PBM’s potential allows it to be a prospective working food system in the country through the promotion of healthier food chains, the literature on PBM in the Philippines is scant. This study thus contributes to this literature by exploring predictors of purchase intention toward PBM. The researchers …

"They Don't Get It": Marginalized Mothers And Their Experiences With Social Support", Zuleida Herba

Counseling and Psychology Dissertations

Maternal caregivers of children with developmental disabilities (DD) experience a significant burden of care and increased parenting stress, making social support crucial to family well-being. This qualitative study used a feminist, intersectional framework to examine how marginalized mothers of children with DD, who have been less extensively studied than majority mothers (Stober & Franzese, 2018), perceive and experience social support from extended family, friends and community members. It also examined how social supports impact the mother’s quality of life, understanding that the caregiver's well-being is a determining factor for the child's well-being. The study investigated, from mothers’ perspectives, what kind …

In pronatalist societies, the decision to remain childfree creates a conflict-laden scenario. This article explores how childfree women confront social hostility and defend their reproductive autonomy through resistance strategies and tactics. With this aim, the results of a feminist research, positioned from feminist Standpoint theory and digital ethnography, are presented. The researcher conducted biographical-narrative interviews with sixteen voluntary childless women from Mexico, Guatemala, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Peru, Spain, and the United Kingdom, all of whom were members of a childfree Facebook group. This research revealed that there is a persistent tension between societal pressure placed on these women in pronatalist …

Visions in Leisure and Business

Under the guidance of the "Belt and Road" policy, a group of Chinese companies have begun to seek new markets or sources of goods in countries along the route. Central Asia, as an important region among the "Belt and Road" countries, has great appeal to Chinese enterprises. However, different cultures and values pose significant challenges to organizational management. Activity Performance Priorities For Adults Experiencing Homelessness: Insights From Management And Staff At A Transitional Housing Facility, Bernard Austin Kigunda Muriithi

Communication Disorders and Occupational Therapy Faculty Publications and Presentations

For people experiencing homelessness (PEH), the provision of affordable housing has been recognized as the most crucial intervention for improving housing stability and facilitating substance abuse treatment. However, evidence indicates that providing housing does not significantly improve substance abuse, mental health, or physical health outcomes. Optimal participation in essential daily activities has been shown to improve health outcomes and support independent living, but there is limited research that identifies activity performance priorities among PEH living in transitional housing. The present study investigates activity performance priorities using the focus group methodology. Management and staff from a transitional housing facility participated in …
