The Effects Of Negative Feedback On Cognitive And Behavior Performance Related To Self-Efficacy, Elizabeth Ann Godfrey, Karly Kammann, Mattie Harvey, Rayna Cruickshanks

Science University Research Symposium (SURS)

Feedback is information or guidance in response to a behavior, action, or result. Feedback is a method for improvement and is a tool commonly used by professors, coaches, and bosses. Existing literature suggests that feedback can elicit emotional responses affecting attitudes and behaviors across contexts. Negative feedback specifically is understudied with variable findings; some literature suggests negative feedback is dismissed while other studies suggest that it may enhance performance. Similar inconclusive findings exist when examining ability-based and effort-based feedback. One factor that may play a role in the response to feedback is self-efficacy. Self-efficacy contributes to emotional reactions and thoughts …

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

This article describes a study that examined the portrayal of East and Southeast Asian immigrant children and their families in children’s picturebooks, focusing on their racialized and minoritized experiences. The authors’ analysis included a sample of 39 picturebooks written in English and published in the United States between 1993 and 2022. The findings reveal that these immigrant children and families are depicted as facing racism, stereotypes, financial difficulties, cultural differences, and language barriers. The Asian protagonists respond to their challenges in various ways, often employing multiple coping strategies. Additionally, they frequently find support through their social relationships when dealing with …

This self-study reports a teacher educator’s efforts to support college student tutors in facilitating English language discussions about a wordless picturebook with immigrant and refugee youth at a newcomer high school. Drawing on critical sociocultural theory and practice-based teacher education, the study reports how tutors adopted a new and unfamiliar pedagogical repertoire as they became more skilled discussion facilitators. The study documents support needed (and missing) for the college tutors to take up this skill. Additionally, the study reports the affordances of a particular wordless book, The Arrival, as a tool that college student tutors used in the process of …

“True Crime Effect”: The Influence Of True Crime Media On Jurors’ Perceptions Of Innocence In A Criminal Trial, Abigail Curran Dec 2024

“True Crime Effect”: The Influence Of True Crime Media On Jurors’ Perceptions Of Innocence In A Criminal Trial, Abigail Curran

Honors College Theses

In the mid-2000s, the popular TV show CSI: Crime Scene Investigation and its portrayal of forensic evidence was blamed for a so-called “CSI effect” - hypothesizing that jurors had greater expectations of the use of forensic evidence than was realistic. While CSI has fallen in popularity - ultimately ending its 15-year run on television in 2015 - stories of crime and criminality remain popular. The most recent iteration of this fascination can be seen in the rise in popularity of true crime documentaries and podcasts. This study aims to investigate the existence of a “true crime effect” in which all …

Neuroplasticity And Creativity: Transformative Potential Of Fibre Arts For Growth And Well-Being, Piper Hutson, James Hutson Dec 2024

Neuroplasticity And Creativity: Transformative Potential Of Fibre Arts For Growth And Well-Being, Piper Hutson, James Hutson

Faculty Scholarship

This article explores the transformative potential of fibre arts—such as quilting, weaving, and embroidery—as tools for personal growth, neuroplasticity, and well-being. Drawing on neuroscience and psychology, it demonstrates how engaging with fibre arts stimulates brain regions associated with problem-solving, sensory integration, and adaptability, fostering neural growth and enhancing cognitive flexibility. Fibre arts, through their inherent challenges and opportunities for play, provide a perfect medium for stepping beyond familiar boundaries, cultivating resilience, and reducing stress. This interplay of creativity and tactile engagement is particularly effective due to the historical undervaluation of fibre arts, which makes them novel and accessible mediums that …

Beyond Pathology: Inclusive Mentorship, Accommodations, And Policy Reforms For Autistic Women In The Medical Profession, Piper Hutson, James Hutson

Faculty Scholarship

This article addresses the unique challenges faced by autistic women in the medical profession, particularly in navigating traditional medical frameworks that often marginalize neurodiverse individuals. Drawing from a targeted literature review, this paper highlights the importance of adapting medical curricula, establishing mentorship programs, and reforming policies to foster inclusivity. Autistic women in medicine encounter barriers such as a lack of mentorship tailored to their needs, inadequate accommodations, and systemic bias rooted in the pathologization of autism. The article synthesizes current research to provide evidence-based recommendations that address these barriers. Specific examples of successful mentorship programs demonstrate the critical role of …

Improving Outcomes Of Patients Being Seen In The Emergency Room For Mental Health Crisis, Kimberly Hudson Dec 2024

Improving Outcomes Of Patients Being Seen In The Emergency Room For Mental Health Crisis, Kimberly Hudson

Doctoral Projects

Mental health is a significant problem, especially in males aged 20 to 50 years old (Omary, 2019). Lack of a primary mental health care provider, lack of proper treatment and follow up appointments for this population, and bottlenecking patients in the emergency room are all factors that contribute to the problem. As a result, these patients experience negative outcomes such as not receiving proper care and/or causing harm to themselves or others. In this doctoral project we will explore the option of patients having better outcomes if seen immediately by a psychiatric health care provider.

Having psychiatric healthcare providers in …

Knowledge And Attitudes Regarding Pubertal Changes Among Adolescent Males In Karachi: A Study Protocol, Sabah Muhammad Nazim, Saleema A. Gulzar, Hussain Maqbool Ahmed Khuwaja, Zohra Lassi

Journal of Asian Midwives (JAM)

Background: Adolescence (the period between childhood and adulthood) is characterized by significant changes in bodily functions, along with psychological and cognitive growth, which lays the foundation for future health. The unanticipated changes in that phase (especially related to sexuality) can cause adolescents embarrassment and distress, thus impacting their well-being and development. Despite the critical role of puberty in adolescents’ physical, psychological, and social development, research focusing on the knowledge and experiences of male adolescents going through puberty is limited, especially in urban Karachi, Pakistan. Several Pakistani studies have mainly focused on female adolescents and their experiences with puberty, leaving a …

“Time To Rebuild The Healthcare Workforce”: Addressing Socio-Cultural And Psychological Perspectives Of Men’S Presence In Nursing And Midwifery, Sarmad Muhammad Soomar, Salima Farooq, Sarosh Tahar Khymani, Nargis Asad Dec 2024

“Time To Rebuild The Healthcare Workforce”: Addressing Socio-Cultural And Psychological Perspectives Of Men’S Presence In Nursing And Midwifery, Sarmad Muhammad Soomar, Salima Farooq, Sarosh Tahar Khymani, Nargis Asad

Journal of Asian Midwives (JAM)

Background: There is a global scarcity of healthcare workers, particularly nurses and midwives, who make up more than half of the current workforce associated with “care”, which is the essence of nursing and midwifery in patient and family care. This is always considered as a profession for women in most of the global workforce. In a patriarchal society, nursing and midwifery limits the choice to be adopted by men. Based on male nurses and midwives’ experiences and stories, it was aimed to explore the present literature to see the citations related to this area, which have been cited to address …

Characteristics Of Adolescent Romantic Partnerships And Their Associations With Partnership Qualities, Jonathon J. Beckmeyer, Gabrielle C. Kline

Faculty Publications - Family and Consumer Sciences

The purpose of our study was to identify characteristics of adolescents’ romantic partnerships that are associated with the quality of those partnerships. 101 romantically involved adolescents (15 to 18 years old, 47.5% female) were recruited from Qualtrics Panel Services for an online, cross-sectional study of family and social relationships. Most adolescents had same-age and different-gender romantic partners, lived geographically close to their partners, and spent several unsupervised hours with their partners each week, had a define the partnership talk, and anticipated stability in their partnership. Partnership characteristics and quality were significantly associated. Living close to partners and seeing them often, …

Immigration, Sanctuary Counties, And Crime: A Safety Net For Vulnerable Populations?, Carson Duca Dec 2024

Immigration, Sanctuary Counties, And Crime: A Safety Net For Vulnerable Populations?, Carson Duca

Sociology and Criminology Undergraduate Honors Theses

The literature for the relationship between immigration and crime has been growing in recent decades, but the research on how immigration sanctuary policies are associated with crime is relatively underdeveloped. There is much theory that describes how immigration sanctuary policies could make the police more effective and efficient due to increased correspondence levels, which also has the potential to increase crime reporting rates. The current study advances the extant literature on the relationship between immigration sanctuary policies and crime. To do so, ordinary least squares (OLS) regression techniques are run to analyze how the presence of immigration sanctuary policies along …

Balancing Efficacy And Efficiency In Functional Behavior Assessment And Behavior Intervention Plan Educator Professional Development, Audrey Alberstadt Dec 2024

Balancing Efficacy And Efficiency In Functional Behavior Assessment And Behavior Intervention Plan Educator Professional Development, Audrey Alberstadt

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

Reviews of functional behavior assessments (FBAs) and behavior intervention plans (BIPs) in schools indicate a lack of technical adequacy. Special educators and related service providers are some of the school personnel that complete FBAs and BIPs. While pre-service preparation programs lay the groundwork for a basic understanding of the FBA and BIP process, in-service training needs to provide professional development to support fluency in technical adequacy. Providing professional development that is both effective and efficient is key to supporting student outcomes and educators’ intent to remain in the field. This study investigates the effect of a virtual professional development intervention, …

Is Subjective Well-Being Insured Against Income Shocks? Evidence From 20-Year Panel Data In South Korea, Jiyeon Ahn, Taehyun Ahn, Kim Dec 2024

Is Subjective Well-Being Insured Against Income Shocks? Evidence From 20-Year Panel Data In South Korea, Jiyeon Ahn, Taehyun Ahn, Kim

Research Collection School Of Economics

Using 20 years of nationally representative panel data in South Korea, we estimate how life satisfaction responds to income shocks. We document that unexpected income changes significantly impact an individual's life satisfaction, and the magnitudes depend on the persistence of income shocks. We find that permanent income shocks substantially penetrate life satisfaction, while transitory income shocks have minimal impact. We also find that life satisfaction regarding external factors such as family income and leisure activities is more sensitive to income shocks than life satisfaction related to social relationships. Our findings imply that it is critical for the government to address …

Exploitative Labor In Los Angeles' Fashion Industry: A Path Towards Ethical Supply Chains, Magali Rodriguez Dec 2024

Exploitative Labor In Los Angeles' Fashion Industry: A Path Towards Ethical Supply Chains, Magali Rodriguez

Sustainable Supply Chain Management

This chapter explores exploitative labor practices within Los Angeles' fashion industry and proposes pathways toward ethical supply chains. The fashion industry, particularly in Los Angeles, relies on labor-intensive production, which often leads to low wages, unsafe conditions, and systemic inequality. The complexity of global supply chains, power imbalances, and consumer demand for cheap clothing contribute to the persistence of exploitative practices. More than half of garment contractors in Los Angeles fail to meet minimum wage standards. The chapter emphasizes the importance of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and ethical sourcing, which includes accountability, transparency, and respect for human rights. It examines …

Organizational Toxicity: Exploring Factors That Cultivate Toxicity In Air Force Maintenance Organizations And Their Impact On Enlisted Airmen, Bryan Keith Wong

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Workplace toxicity negatively impacts organizations and harms employees within those organizations. However, each organization is subject to various influences and contexts, and understanding toxicity within specific contexts provides practitioners with the knowledge of its origin, influential factors, and how to respond. The U.S. Air Force is rich in culture and subcultures; it is also subject to toxicity, which is affected by several military-unique factors. Yet, toxicity in the military has been primarily explored through the leadership lens with limited insights into other influential elements, such as followers and the workplace environment. Additionally, little attention has been placed on the effects …

Behind The Screen: Exploring Parental Roles In K-12 Online Education, Barbara T. Sandberg, Charles R. Graham, Jered Borup, Richard E. West, Rocio Quiroga Velasquez

Faculty Publications

Independent engagement can be challenging for K-12 online students. Parents’ physical presence makes them an important source of engagement support. Previous research on parental support in online courses is limited and focused on asynchronous learning within a single program. Since the COVID-19 pandemic, online enrollments have grown and instructional modalities have evolved. To better understand parental support post-Covid, we interviewed 21 parents across eight online programs with asynchronous, synchronous, and bichronous course offerings. Parents identified their affective, behavioral, cognitive, and other support roles. Implications for parental roles in addressing the academic engagement gap are provided to both researchers and practitioners.

Program Development For Transition To Adulthood For Individuals With Autism, Kendall Davis

Occupational Therapy Doctoral Capstones

This project aimed to enhance transition programs for individuals with autism by evaluating the assessments currently used to identify areas of concern in vocational skills training. A review of the literature highlighted that, as autism diagnoses continue to rise in the United States, transition programs play a crucial role in bridging the gap between youth and adulthood. However, programs focused on education and vocational skills training are often insufficient in clinical settings, revealing a significant need for improvement. The literature also indicated that occupational therapists face a shortage of effective vocational assessments tailored to support vocational readiness. This capstone project …

Return To Sport For Athletes With Shoulder Injuries, Isabella Heikkinen

Occupational Therapy Doctoral Capstones

Shoulder sports injuries can be complex, making returning to sports difficult. There has been a transition in sports medicine to utilize a more encompassing and holistic approach to addressing injury. Return to sport is typically addressed by physical therapy and athletic training. However, occupational therapy can provide a more holistic approach encompassing physical and psychosocial aspects when rehabilitating an athlete, potentially leading to more successful therapeutic outcomes. This capstone embodied occupational therapists’ role in rehabilitating the shoulder and returning to sport by creating a higher-tech HEP that provides a more holistic rehabilitation approach. Throughout the 14-week process, videos were made …
