Developing A Learner-Centered Response To Writing Through A Graduate Course In Writing-Across-The-Curriculum, Faqryza Ab Latif, Kristin Winet

Journal of Response to Writing

Although writing-across-the-curriculum (WAC) programs have been commonplace since the 1970s, the focus has largely been at the level of assessment and programmatic development and less on the instructors, particularly graduate teaching assistants (TAs) who adopt these practices. In this article, we describe a pilot WAC graduate-level course in writing pedagogy that our institution developed as part of our recent membership in the Center for the Integration of Research, Teaching, and Learning (CIRTL). We also share how one science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) graduate student revised her approach to assignment design, feedback, and assessment for a general education course and …

Does A Name Make A Difference? Teaching Random Selection In The Classroom, Venessa Singhroy, Rommel Robertson, Kostas Stroumbakis

Numeracy

In Statistics education, it is crucial to emphasize the foundational significance of random selection, which underpins statistical methodologies and ensures unbiased representation of populations in samples. However, students often struggle to grasp the concept’s complexities, leading to challenges in applying random selection methods effectively. This paper examines the gap between students’ theoretical understanding of randomness and their practical application of this concept. Using an Explanatory Sequential Design, this study presents an instructional activity aimed at teaching the concept of randomness in the selection process and proposes modifications to enhance student comprehension. The activity, implemented in undergraduate Statistics and Psychology courses, …

Best Practices In International Student Programs, Katrina Anaya, Heather Jacobson, Lisa Jacobson

MAGIS: Student Development Journal

The number of international students in the United States is steadily increasing, and these students are important contributors to the diversity and globalization of a campus. Because of this, the authors of this article recommend best practices for serving international students drawn from NAFSA (Association of International Educators), the Institute of International Education, and the Forum on Education Abroad. These best practices are then compared to the standards in Blimling and Whitt’s Good Practices in Student Affairs. Three case studies are then cited to provide examples of how these best practices can be implemented to improve services for international students.

Navigating Responsible Consumption: Unveiling Consumer Perceptions And The Role Of Bio-Based Products In Sustainable Decision-Making, Magdalena Klimczuk-Kochańska, Magdalena Marczewska

Journal of Marketing and Consumer Behaviour in Emerging Markets

The modern consumer society is criticised for its harmful impact on individual well-being and the environment, prompting a call for a transition to responsible consumption. This article explores emerging trends in consumer behaviour towards responsible consumption. Drawing from existing literature and empirical findings, it examines the multifaceted dimensions of responsible consumption, encompassing environmental, ethical, and social considerations. Conscious consumers prioritise basic needs over excessive consumption, opting for high-quality, reliable, and environmentally friendly products, especially those derived from biomaterials called bio-based products. The Trouble With Classifications, Aziz Z. Huq Dec 2024

The Trouble With Classifications, Aziz Z. Huq

Notre Dame Law Review

The Supreme Court relies increasingly on anticlassification rules to implement the Constitution’s various commands of evenhanded state treatment. These rules direct attention to whether an instance of a forbidden classification is present on the face of a challenged law. They contain two necessary steps. First, a court defines a general category of impermissible terms. Second, a court ascertains whether an instance of the category is found in enacted text—so triggering the familiar strict scrutiny analysis. So defined, anticlassification rules now dominate equal protection, free speech, “dormant” Commerce Clause, and even free exercise jurisprudence. The Roberts Court celebrates these doctrinal tests …

Evaluation Of An Instructional Sequence To Promote The Emergence Of Convergent Intraverbals In Children With Autism, Jesika Woodard Dec 2024

Evaluation Of An Instructional Sequence To Promote The Emergence Of Convergent Intraverbals In Children With Autism, Jesika Woodard

Theses

Skinner (1957) defined intraverbal as a type of verbal behavior in which the

response form has no point-to-point correspondence with its verbal stimulus and is

followed by generalized conditioned reinforcement. Verbal behavior can be influenced

by multiple controlling variables, with convergent and divergent control being two

distinct types of this influence. In convergent intraverbals, multiple components of

antecedent verbal stimuli control a specific verbal response of the speaker. An example of

an intraverbal response under convergent control may be "banana" when asked, "What is

a fruit that is yellow?" De Souza et al. (2019) evaluated the effects of teaching …

Honors Program Theses and Projects

This project analyzed the continuum of philosophical interventions used to support students with severe autism. Project activities included reviews of program websites and documentation, site visits to each private residential school program, and focus group interviews conducted with teachers from each school. These data sources created a basis for analysis and a variety of conclusions to describe the contrasting philosophical approaches employed by each program. The summative analysis of the project activities provided greater understanding of the complex continuum of philosophical intervention strategies designed to support students with ASD.

Promotional Product Brand Message Effectiveness: A Study Of Brand Awareness Using The Nudge Theory, Seth Barnett Dec 2024

Promotional Product Brand Message Effectiveness: A Study Of Brand Awareness Using The Nudge Theory, Seth Barnett

JWU Dissertations & Theses

This dissertation explored the efficacy of promotional products as marketing nudges for new market entrants. It employs Nudge Theory, a measure used to induce behavioral changes (Thaler & Sunstein, 2021), to analyze their influence on human behavior and decision-making. Through voluntary surveys, participants' brand awareness was assessed, examining changes in branding awareness and general brand perception by using promotional products as a catalyst.

Promotional products are tangible items imprinted with a company's logo or message and distributed to consumers to enhance brand awareness and foster emotional connections (Pennington, 2002). Often given at no cost, these items are constantly reminded of …

El Susurro Del Espíritu En Clave Queer: Arte, Liturgia Y Trascendencia, Cruz Edgardo Torres Dec 2024

El Susurro Del Espíritu En Clave Queer: Arte, Liturgia Y Trascendencia, Cruz Edgardo Torres

Conexión Queer: Revista Latinoamericana y Caribeña de Teologías Queer

The evolution of liturgy, preaching, and religious architecture has accompanied the officialization of Christianity, giving rise to complex buildings and artistic expressions, such as basilicas. This process, though historically met with resistance, continues to this day and becomes especially relevant from queer perspectives. The article highlights the importance of the arts — music, theater, dance, poetry, and visual arts — in liturgy and preaching, not merely as embellishment, but as vehicles for opening up new spiritual languages. These queer liturgical practices affirm marginalized LGBTIQ+ identities and heal historical memories, engaging with their realities and struggles.

Beyond Color: Design Approaches For Conveying Mood And Music Genre In Album Covers For Color Blind Accessibility, Victoria Erdmann

Senior Honors Theses

In the music industry, album cover design serves as a pivotal visual medium that not only acts as a marketing tool but can also shape a listener’s perception of the music. Designing album covers that are accessible to color blind individuals presents a unique challenge in an industry where color plays a significant role in design choices. This thesis examines how color vision deficiency impacts the perception of album art and defines four approaches that designers can take to ensure inclusive visual communication. Famous Last Words: A Study Of Faith In Texas Death Row Inmates, Mariah Podwika Dec 2024

Famous Last Words: A Study Of Faith In Texas Death Row Inmates, Mariah Podwika

Honors Program Theses and Research Projects

Historically, final statements of condemned individuals prior to execution have shown a pattern of the presence of some type of religious sentiment. However, the justification and reasoning behind religious remarks still remains elusive given the finality of the event. The State of Texas is unique given the state provides a substantial amount of information pertaining to final statements due to the recording process of the Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ). Similar to rituals of recording condemned individuals’ last statements from the fourteenth century, prison wardens in Texas give the condemned an opportunity to share their last words, which are …

Addressing Agency In Intersectional Leadership: The Consequences Of Agentic Leader Behaviors For Black And White Men And Women In Leadership, Sydney Roux Dec 2024

Addressing Agency In Intersectional Leadership: The Consequences Of Agentic Leader Behaviors For Black And White Men And Women In Leadership, Sydney Roux

LSU Master's Theses

As Black women gain representation in business and entrepreneurial leadership, it is important to consider how these women will be perceived as leaders. Role congruity theory (RCT) posits that women’s gender roles do not align with the leadership role which often negatively impacts leader evaluations. However, RCT is often employed without a racial context where women are presumed to be White, and thus, it is unclear if the same assumptions can be applied to Black women. Leadership scholars have identified the ways in which attributions and expectations of leaders are shaped by both demographic characteristics and behavioral events. Because Black …
