Disability Support: Developing A Model Of Empowerment, Brandon Lueken, Kelli Muilenburg, James Spaan
MAGIS: Student Development Journal
This paper seeks to identify current best practices in supporting students with disabilities at West Coast public institutions of higher education. The authors identify three exemplary models of best practice at a variety of institutions. The first examines disability identity development at the University of California, Berkeley, the second a recreational sports facility at Portland State Uni- versity, the third a clearinghouse model of adap- tive equipment for a group of Washington com- munity colleges. Using these three cases, a holistic model of best practices that supports students with disabilities is put forth for implementation at other institutions.

Nuclear Regimes In The 21st Century, Stephen J. Cimbala, Adam Lowther
Nuclear Regimes In The 21st Century, Stephen J. Cimbala, Adam Lowther
Space and Defense
The modern nuclear operations practitioner is facing a more complex future than at any point since the height of the Cold War. Understanding the past, present, and possible future of nuclear force structure and doctrine offers the policy maker a useful way to make sense of unfolding events and place them within a broader context. With China, Russia, and North Korea all posing a growing nuclear risk to the United States, a strong grasp on the available options for countering these threats is certainly important.

Theses and Dissertations
This thesis analyzes the works of two Colombian authors, Diana López Zuleta and Sara Jaramillo Klinkert, who, as indirect victims of their father's murder, address impunity and its psychological effects through two genres: the chronicle and memoir. López Zuleta describes the process of mourning through the search for justice, while Jaramillo Klinkert explores mourning and the symbolic process of "killing the father" in a context of impunity. Both authors use their work to address the violence in Colombia, the memory, and the search for the truth, emphasizing the importance of literature as an aesthetic expression and a therapeutic and ethical …

No. 31: Precarity, Food Insecurity, And Migration: The Kerala-Gulf Nexus And Women Domestic Workers, Anand Panamthottam Cherian
Migration and Food Security (MiFOOD) Network
Low-skilled Malayali women migrants employed as domestic laborers in Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC)1 countries navigate a transnational labor system that entrenches gendered hierarchies and structural inequalities. Ethnographic fieldwork conducted in Kerala and the United Arab Emirates utilizing biographical methods such as life history and oral history reveals that migration, often envisioned as a pathway to economic security, intensifies vulnerabilities through layers of exclusion, exploitation, and deprivation. These women’s lived experiences underscore the precarious conditions that define their labor trajectories, shaped by systemic governance failures and socio-cultural dynamics.
Food security, positioned at the nexus of material survival and symbolic significance, emerges …

Practice Problem: Nursing burnout is a significant problem with far-reaching consequences. High levels of stress, emotional exhaustion, and reduced job satisfaction among nurses contribute to poor patient outcomes, increased medical errors, and high turnover rates. There is a high prevalence of burnout among nurse executives, consequences of which include extreme stress, emotional anguish, and a desire to quit, which points to a larger problem with burnout affecting the nursing profession (Martin et al., 2023). Fostering resilience among nurses can help to mitigate these outcomes by enhancing physical, mental, and social health through building purpose, positive emotions, and effective stress management. …

By definition, neurodivergent students are those whose brain function differs significantly from societal expectations (Walker, 2014). The term ‘neurodivergent’ is associated with the Neurodiversity Movement. Although the Neurodiversity Movement was spearheaded by the Autistic1 community, the term commonly includes other forms of neurodivergence such as ADHD and dyslexia. The purpose of this study was to explore the experiences of neurodivergent students in Communication Sciences Disorders (CSD) programs, where systematic data on their demographics and experience is relatively limited. Specifically, this study analysed posts from the online social media platform Reddit that are dedicated to the college experience of neurodivergent students …

Families seeking asylum in the United States are often placed in detention centers after fleeing crime, violence, and government ineffectiveness in their countries. Migration brings more hardship, terror, and trauma. The cumulative psychological and social effects from detention need to be better understood. This exploratory study examines the effects of detention and family separation on immigrant children’s psychosocial wellbeing after released. We recruited 81 Central American children previously detained with their parents to assess their wellbeing since release. A third of the children had been separated from their parents during detention. Over a third of parents and less than a …

Powerful Families Podcast: The Role Of Occupational Therapy In Family Education Of Mental Health Conditions And Substance Use Disorder, Wessleigh Holloway, Cynthia Haynes
Fall 2024 OTD Capstone Symposium
Mental health conditions and SUD significantly impact family members emotionally and physiologically, yet these effects are often insufficiently recognized and addressed (Delaney, 2023). Existing education programs focus on individuals in recovery, leaving families without the necessary knowledge and skills to support their loved ones effectively, resulting in feelings of powerlessness and confusion. This capstone project created an education program to equip family members of individuals with SUD or mental health challenges with the knowledge and skills needed to navigate addiction and recovery effectively. The program focuses on improving understanding of SUD, fostering healthier coping mechanisms, strengthening family trust, and enhancing …

Supporting Social-Emotional Learning In Early Childhood Education, Victoria L. Cavitt
Masters Projects
Social-emotional learning is a critical component of early childhood education because of how many students lack appropriate social-emotional (SEL) skills. While this has always been an important component of children’s growth and development, the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 intensified the need for the implementation of social-emotional learning curriculum, lessons, and conversations in schools and homes. Research describes the necessity of social-emotional learning and the importance of considering diverse needs and cultures, yet teachers and parents are lacking support to make this area part of each day at school and home. Students need instruction in SEL skills to help prepare them …

Social-Emotional Learning Through A Culturally Responsive Lens, Megan E. Peterson
Masters Projects
Research has revealed that many students increasingly exhibit disruptive behavior in the classroom. These disruptive behaviors can hinder the classroom environment and impede the academic school day. The occurrence of disruptive behavior – especially in early childhood – is on the rise, putting many children at risk for conflictual teacher-student relationships and academic difficulties that follow (Rosati & Lynch, 2023). Teachers report students displaying more anger, anxiety, lack of impulse control, and oppositional defiance (Aksoy, 2020). Educators face the challenge of meeting the diverse social-emotional needs of children in order to provide them with a safe, responsive environment where holistic …

Social Emotional Learning Unit Plan For Kindergarten Students, Aubrey Groenhof
Masters Projects
Younger grades are beginning to look different as time goes by. With new laws in place, like No Child Left Behind, there is a higher demand for rigorous academics. Teachers have assessments and district provided curriculum to make sure to achieve within their school days. This push for academic rigor has led to less free-play in the younger grades resulting in more disruptive behaviors. Research has revealed the importance of Social-Emotional Learning within the classroom setting to reduce the disruptive behaviors and emotions. This project focuses on the impact of Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) on disruptive behaviors. The author investigated different …
