A Sense Of Danger: Gender-Based Violence And The Quest For A Sensory Criminology, Amanda Holt, Sian Lewis
A Sense Of Danger: Gender-Based Violence And The Quest For A Sensory Criminology, Amanda Holt, Sian Lewis
School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences
This article responds to recent calls for a ‘sensory criminology’ by offering a multi-sensorial analysis of gender-based violence (GBV). We examine both the often-discussed external senses as well as the more marginalized internal senses and explore how emotion, the broader criminological ‘atmosphere’ of GBV and the shift in atmosphere during the Covid-19 pandemic are implicated in women’s experiences of street-based sexual harassment and sexual assault. By analysing over 140 stories of GBV during the Covid-19 lockdowns, we evidence the scope and value of a fully multi-sensory criminology.

Creatures Who Advocate: An Ecocritical Reading Of Jubilate Agno, Min Wild
School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences
For I pray God for the ostriches of Salisbury Plain, the beavers of the Medway and silver fish of Thames"(Jubilate Agno, B153): species extinction in Christopher Smart s unique poem is the focal point of this essay. That the poem s ecstatic scope offers a leveling care for the nonhuman has been acknowledged, but here I argue that it speaks out of abjection: The poet is the supplicant, asking all Earth s creatures to advocate for him before God. Additionally, focusing particularly on the figure of the beaver, I highlight the medieval animal fable as a valid mode of understanding …

Differentiating Origins Of Outflow Tract Ventricular Arrhythmias: The Correction Of Transitional Zone Index Is Not Superior To The Original One, Ming Liu, Zhuoqiao He, Pengxiang Ying, Dong Lin, Min Yu, Xuerui Tan
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Introduction: Our team once proposed a correction of transitional zone index (CTZI) based on the transitional zone index (TZI) in view of achieving a more precise prediction of outflow tract ventricular arrhythmia (OTVA). The predictive accuracy of these two electrocardiogram (ECG) algorithms has not been validated and compared. The purpose of this study was to compare the predictive accuracy of TZI and CTZI in a much larger population with idiopathic OTVA. Methods: The predictive accuracy of TZI and CTZI was compared in 695 individuals with idiopathic premature ventricular complex or ventricular tachycardia which exhibited a left bundle branch block pattern …

In addition to well-known effects on species ecophysiology, phenology, and distributions, climate change is widely predicted to impact essential ecosystem services such as decomposition and nutrient cycling. While temperature and soil moisture are thought to influence litter decomposition, elucidating consistent soil process responses to observed or predicted shifts in climate have proven difficult to evidence. Here we investigated how aspect (i.e., north-south orientation), a natural model for variation in soil temperature, influenced soil physico-chemical conditions and decomposition of two standardised litter types (Green tea and Rooibos teabags) in Pole-facing (PF) and Equator-facing (EF) roadside verges spanning a 3000 km and …

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
A novel discharge dispersion model is developed to simulate the complex three-dimensional flow behaviour of thermal-induced buoyant water jets under current-wave coexisting conditions. The model solved the governing fluid flow and energy equations for two immiscible and incompressible phases (water and air) which were weakly coupled by applying the Boberbeck-Boussinesq approximation. Different turbulence models, such as k−ε multiphase, k-ω SST, k-ω SST-multiphase, k-ω SST-stable, and realizable k−ε were applied. Extensive verification of the model's performance is conducted by comparing the developed model results against a diverse range of analytical and experimental data. First, a series of simulations are carried out …

Mixed Debris Interaction With Obstacle Array Under Extreme Flood Conditions, Piyali Chowdhury, Indigo Jaie Fredericks, Jesus Castaño Alvarez, Matthew Clark, Ravindra Jayaratne, J. J. Wijetunge, Alison Raby, Paul Taylor
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
This investigation explores the interactions of different shaped debris with an array of obstacles under subcritical flow conditions, representative of a flood associated with a storm surge or tsunami. Panels, blocks and cylinders were used in a flow channel, as analogues for house panels, cars/containers and trees respectively, whilst some tests used a mix of debris. The backwater effect due to the blockage caused by the obstacles was most (least) significant for panels (cylinders). There was some evidence that smaller key log types and higher flow rates led to smaller dams. It was also evident that key logs formed at …

Background: Lower fitness is a predictor of adverse outcomes after radical cystectomy. Lockdown measures during the COVID-19 pandemic affected daily physical activity. We hypothesised that lockdown during the pandemic was associated with a reduction in preoperative aerobic fitness and an increase in postoperative complications in patients undergoing radical cystectomy. Methods: We reviewed routine preoperative cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET) data collected prior to the pandemic (September 2018 to March 2020) and after lockdown (March 2020 to July 2021) in patients undergoing radical cystectomy. Differences in CPET variables, Postoperative Morbidity Survey (POMS) data, and length of hospital stay were compared. Results: We …

Oxygen is the most used drug in anaesthesia. Despite such widespread use, optimal perioperative oxygen administration remains highly controversial because of concerns about the competing harms of both hyperoxia and hypoxia. Notwithstanding a Cochrane review concluding that routinely administering a fractional inspired oxygen concentration (FiO2) >0.6 intraoperatively might increase postoperative morbidity and mortality, the World Health Organization (WHO) currently recommends all anaesthetised patients receive 0.8 FiO2 during and immediately after surgery to reduce surgical site infections. Results from the largest trial available at the time of these two reviews (suggesting long-term survival may be worse with high …

The Intergenerational Co-design of Novel Technologies In Coastal Communities (ICONIC) project is running co-design workshops with older (50+) and younger people (16-30) to design technologies suitable for older people’s wellbeing. We aim to design four novel technologies in extended reality (XR), underwater telepresence (UT), social games and voice interaction. This late breaking report focuses on workshop results for the first two technologies. Ten workshops were held (August 23 - February 24) involving 24 older people and 12 younger people. Our co-design methods were demonstrably feasible although recruiting younger people is difficult. Nevertheless, the thematic and content analysis showed the importance …

Understanding Cyber-Risks In Complex Next-Generation Maritime Technologies: Autonomy And Offshore Wind Energy Operations, Kimberly Tam, Avanthika Vineetha Harish, Kevin Jones
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
When developing maritime technology, each new technology is often developed and assessed separately. However, it is likely with the convergence of systems, and greater interconnectivity between systems in the sector, that new technologies will be inter-connected digitally or operationally. Understanding the cyber risks of the larger systems of systems is important. This paper looks at the potential cyber-physical risk of future autonomy and offshore renewable energy solutions co-existing together. A threat scenario is presented using real cyber-vulnerabilities in autonomy and offshore wind systems. This paper discusses potential overall vulnerabilities when combining these two emerging technologies. It concludes with suggested mitigations …

Wave Energy Extraction From Rigid Rectangular Compound Floating Plates, S. Michele, S. Zheng, E. Renzi, J. Guichard, A. G.L. Borthwick, D. M. Greaves
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
We present a theoretical model to analyse the hydrodynamics of wave energy converters (WECs) comprised of three-dimensional, rigid, floating, compound rectangular plates in the open sea. The hydrodynamic problem is solved by means of Green's theorem and a free-surface Green's function. Plate motion is predicted through decomposition into rigid natural modes. We first analyse the case of a single rectangular plate and validate our model against experimental results from physical model tests undertaken in the COAST laboratory at the University of Plymouth. Then we extend our theory to complex shapes and arrays of plates and examine how the geometry, incident …

Modelling Reservoir Sediment Flushing Through A Bottom Tunnel With An Initially Covered Intake, Yining Sun, Ji Li, Zhixian Cao, Jinxin Liu, Huan Xu, Alistair G.L. Borthwick
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
Sediment flushing through a bottom tunnel is one of the most effective methods to alleviate reservoir sedimentation. However, the multi-physical hydro-sediment-morphological processes of reservoir sediment flushing through an initially covered bottom tunnel intake have remained poorly understood, and a physically enhanced and practically viable mathematical model is required. The present study uses an integrated model to resolve sediment flushing through an initially covered bottom tunnel intake. The proposed model couples a two-dimensional double layer-averaged model for the reservoir with a one-dimensional model for the bottom tunnel by means of numerical fluxes calculations at the inner boundary. The governing equations are …
Nonlinear Spatial Evolution Of Degenerate Quartets Of Water Waves, Conor Heffernan, Amin Chabchoub, Raphael Stuhlmeier
Nonlinear Spatial Evolution Of Degenerate Quartets Of Water Waves, Conor Heffernan, Amin Chabchoub, Raphael Stuhlmeier
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
In this manuscript we investigate the Benjamin–Feir (or modulation) instability for the spatial evolution of water waves from the perspective of the discrete, spatial Zakharov equation, which captures cubically nonlinear and resonant wave interactions in deep water without restrictions on spectral bandwidth. Spatial evolution, with measurements at discrete locations, is pertinent for laboratory hydrodynamic experiments, such as in wave flumes, which rely on time-series measurements at fixed gauges installed along the facility. This setting is likewise appropriate for experiments in electromagnetic and plasma waves. Through a reformulation of the problem for a degenerate quartet, we bring to bear techniques of …

This paper, grounded in a birthing body, explores the ecology of birth by contrasting the internalphysiological systems with the external socio-cultural ones. I propose that the birthing body is amembrane between these systems offering a space of encounter and access to other forms ofknowing. One of the objects of knowing is what Nora Bateson (2021) calls the ongoing vitality, a formof communication between organisms in living systems. I argue that ongoing vitality can not only beperceived but its perception can support the actualisation of healthy possibilities present at themargins of internal physiological and the external socio-cultural systems.I situate my brief …

Objectives: To understand how psychosocial factors associated with physical activity differ based on disease severity in people with dementia, and how these factors are associated with physical activity participation. Methods: Eighty-seven people with dementia, alongside their family carer were asked to complete a series of questions related to physical activity participation, including barriers, motivators, and facilitators. Regression models were developed to understand how psychosocial factors were associated with physical activity participation in the cohort. Results: In the final models, only the absence of intrapersonal barriers was associated with overall physical activity and regular moderate-to-vigorous physical activity. Feelings of relatedness were …

Sediment Sorting Within A Relatively Wave-Exposed And Sandy Subtidal Seagrass (Zostera Marina) Meadow, Gerd Masselink, Tom Brown, Tim Scott, Liane Brodie
School of Biological and Marine Sciences
Seagrasses impact on sedimentary intertidal and subtidal ecosystems by affecting local hydrodynamics, geomorphology and sediment properties. Their influence on hydrodynamics is to reduce flow velocities in their canopies, and this leads to increased net sedimentation rates and reduction of the grain size. Most investigations of the seagrass-hydrodynamics-sediment feedback system has been carried out over silt and fine-sand beds under tide-dominated conditions, mostly in the intertidal zone. Here, we use sedimentological data from a relatively wave-exposed and subtidal seagrass (Zostera marina) meadow in the Isles of Scilly with a fine-to-medium sand bed and show that the sand within the seagrass meadow …

Race-Consciousness And Black Humanity: Reinterpreting The Brown Footnote 11 Doll Studies, Vinay Harpalani

Much has been written about Brown v. Board of Education and the doctrinal conflicts between the anti-classification principle, which espouses colorblindness, and the antisubordination principle, which allows race-consciousness under certain circumstances. But one aspect that is unexplored is how Brown Footnote 11 and reactions to it played a role in the Supreme Court's move away from race-consciousness. In Footnote 11, the Court cited social science evidence to establish the harm of segregation. Footnote 11 is particularly known for the famous doll studies conducted by Professor Kenneth Bancroft Clark and Dr. Mamie Phipps Clark. The Brown Court took the doll studies, …

Effective Early Help services are key to halting rising rates of children in care in the UK. Yet despite family support and child welfare interventions being unequally distributed across the country, the role of ‘place’ has received limited attention in the children's social care arena. This paper examines the connections between coastal challenges, Early Help and child welfare interventions, drawing on embedded research undertaken within a Local Authority on England's coast with elevated levels of children in care. We focus on families’ experiences raising children in a seaside resort area as well as professionals’ perspectives on the place-based challenges faced …

Background: In the UK, tens of millions of working days are lost due to work-related ill health every year, costing billions of pounds. The role of Occupational Health (OH) services is vital in helping workers to maintain employment when they encounter injury or illness. OH providers traditionally rely on a clinical workforce to deliver these services, particularly doctors and nurses with OH qualifications. However, the increasing demand for OH services is unlikely to be met in the future using this traditional model, due to the declining number of OH-trained doctors and nurses in the UK. Multi-disciplinary models of OH delivery, …
