Nonlinear Dynamics Of Acoustic Fluctuations In One-Dimensional Ducts With And Without Unsteady Combustion, Swarnalatha Kathalagiri Vasantha Kumar
Dissertations
The overall objective of this research is to analyze the nonlinear dynamics of combustors in one dimensional Cartesian coordinate. This research was carried out in four parts, with each successive part building on the previous one. The first part begins with investigation of the coupled nonlinear evolution of acoustic modes in a quasi 1-D duct with axially inhomogeneous mean velocity and mean thermodynamic properties. A novel modification of the Krylov--Bogoliubov method of averaging (KBMA) is developed to analytically solve the modal-amplitude equations that are linearly and nonlinearly coupled with both quadratic and cubic nonlinearities. Approximate analytical solutions based on the …
Liner Implosion Of Magneto-Inertial Fusion Plasmas Across The Periodic Table, Brian Dale Taylor
Liner Implosion Of Magneto-Inertial Fusion Plasmas Across The Periodic Table, Brian Dale Taylor
Dissertations
The goal of achieving net energy production from fusion reactions would have many positive and transformational impacts upon society and is therefore of great interest. Magneto-Inertial Fusion may be a path to achieving the high energy density requirements. One possible method for reaching the necessary plasma conditions is through a z-pinch driving a magnetized liner to compress and heat the fusion fuel. Progress has been made through both modeling and experiment, largely through Sandia National Laboratories, in recent years in developing this process and achieving neutron yields in the range of 1013 neutrons per pulse. Magnetized liner z-pinch experiments have …
Analysis Of A Magnetically Enhanced Microwave Powered Split-Ring Resonator Plasma Source For Micropropulsion, Andrew Walsten
Analysis Of A Magnetically Enhanced Microwave Powered Split-Ring Resonator Plasma Source For Micropropulsion, Andrew Walsten
Dissertations
This work focuses on better understanding split-ring resonators (SRRs) as plasma devices and exploring their use as a plasma source in a two-stage Hall thruster. This is done by first studying the effect of a single versus a coupled SRR on plasma production. Through the use of simulations in ANSYS HFSS and Langmuir probe measurements, it is found that coupled SRRs result in a more uniform plasma at higher pressures due to the introduction of a secondary ionization point, and the electromagnetic coupling resulting in a slightly stronger electric field being produced at the primary gap. Experiments were also done …

Obesity is an epidemic that affects over 40% of adults in America. Obesity can be divided into metabolically healthy and metabolically unhealthy obesity, with the latter being characterized by symptoms closely associated with metabolic syndrome, type 2 diabetes, and metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD). What causes the transition from metabolically healthy to metabolically unhealthy obesity is not fully known. Further, it is unclear how this transition correlates with the onset of co-morbid conditions. We propose that Ubiquitin D (FAT10) may play a role in transitioning into a metabolically unhealthy state in response to obesity. This dissertation evaluated two main …

Dissertations
In the Maritime Continent (MC), sea and land breezes (SLB), shaped by its numerous islands, are key drivers of the tropical climate. Island morphology, terrain, land cover, and orientation relative to prevailing winds affect these breezes and associated convection. While research has largely focused on larger islands, smaller islands like Java remain understudied. Java features a mountainous chain with several gaps and experienced significant land use and land cover changes (∆LULC) over the past two decades. This dissertation aims to: 1) adapt observational methods to detect mesoscale boundaries in numerical models, 2) analyze the role of Java’s topography and cloud- …

Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Faculty Publications
Integrating human behavior into agent-based models has been challenging due to its diversity. An example is strategic coalition formation, which occurs when an individual decides to collaborate with others because it strategically benefits them, thereby increasing the expected utility of the situation. An algorithm called ABMSCORE was developed to help model strategic coalition formation in agent-based models. The ABMSCORE algorithm employs hedonic games from cooperative game theory and has been applied to various situations, including refugee egress and smallholder farming cooperatives. This paper discusses ABMSCORE, including its mechanism, requirements, limitations, and application. To demonstrate the potential of ABMSCORE, a new …

Validation is the process of determining if a model adequately represents the system under study for the model’s intended purpose. Validation is a critical component in building the credibility of a simulation model with its end-users. Effectively conducting validation can be a daunting task for both novice and experienced simulation developers. Further compounding the difficult task of conducting validation is that there is no universally accepted approach for assessing a simulation. These challenges are particularly relevant to the paradigm of Agent-Based Modeling and Simulation (ABMS) because of the complexity found in these models’ mechanisms and in the real-world situations they …

Shipbuilding drawings, crafted manually before the digital era, are vital for historical reference and technical insight. However, their digital versions, stored as scanned PDFs, often contain significant noise, making them unsuitable for use in modern CAD software like AutoCAD. Traditional denoising techniques struggle with the diverse and intense noise found in these documents, which also does not adhere to standard noise models. In this paper, we propose an innovative generative approach tailored for document enhancement, particularly focusing on shipbuilding drawings. For a small, unpaired dataset of clean and noisy shipbuilding drawing documents, we first learn to generate the noise in …

Alzheimer's disease is the most common cause of dementia and a leading cause of mortality in the elderly population. Diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease has traditionally relied on evaluation of clinical symptoms for cognitive impairment with a definitive diagnosis requiring post-mortem demonstration of neuropathology. However, advances in disease pathogenesis have revealed that patients exhibit Alzheimer's disease pathology several decades before the manifestation of clinical symptoms. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) plays an important role in the management of patients with Alzheimer's disease. The clinical availability of molecular MRI (mMRI) contrast agents can revolutionize the diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease. In this article, we …

Patients with reflux-like symptoms (heartburn and regurgitation) are often not well advised on implementing individualised strategies to help control their symptoms using dietary changes, lifestyle modifications, behavioural changes or fast-acting rescue therapies. One reason for this may be the lack of emphasis in management guidelines owing to 'low-quality' evidence and a paucity of interventional studies. Thus, a panel of 11 gastroenterologists and primary care doctors used the Delphi method to develop consolidated advice for patients based on expert consensus. A steering committee selected topics for literature searches using the PubMed database, and a modified Delphi process including two online meetings …

Homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (HoFH) is an ultra-rare inherited condition that affects approximately one in 300,000 people. The disorder is characterized by extremely high, life-threatening levels of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol from birth, leading to significant premature cardiovascular morbidity and mortality, if left untreated.
Homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia is severely underdiagnosed and undertreated in the United States (US), despite guidelines recommendations for universal pediatric lipid screening in children aged 9–11. Early diagnosis and adequate treatment are critical in averting premature cardiovascular disease in individuals affected by HoFH. Yet, an unacceptably high number of people living with HoFH remain undiagnosed, misdiagnosed, and/or receive …

Introduction: Anemia is a risk factor for all-cause mortality in older adults. Iron deficiency may also be associated with adverse outcomes, independent of its role in causing anemia. This study tested the hypotheses that anemia, and low ferritin among non-anemic participants, were associated with all-cause and cause-specific mortality in a community-based cohort of older adults.
Methods: Fasting blood was obtained from 5,070 ARIC participants (median age: 75 years) in 2011-2013. Anemia was defined by hemoglobin concentrations < 12 g/dL in women and < 13 g/dL in men. We classified 4,020 non-anemic participants by quartiles of plasma ferritin, measured by the SomaScan proteomics platform. Cox proportional hazards regression was used. Mortality was ascertained via phone calls with proxies as part of twice-yearly cohort follow-up, surveillance of local hospital discharge indexes, state death records, and linkage to the National Death Index.
Results: Of the total participants, 21% had anemia at baseline. Over a median of 7.5 years, there were 1,147 deaths, including 357 due to …

Background: Echocardiography is the gold standard for the diagnosis hemodynamically significant-patent ductus arteriosus (hs-PDA). It requires trained personnel and is not readily available. Urinary biomarkers can be used as an adjunct.
Objective: The objective of this study was to systematically review the diagnostic accuracy of urinary N terminal pro-B type natriuretic peptides (NT-proBNP) for hs-PDA in preterm neonates.
Methods: We included studies that evaluated urinary NT-proBNP and urinary NT-proBNP/creatinine ratio (index tests) in preterm neonates with hs-PDA (participants) in comparison with echocardiogram (reference standard). Methodological quality and certainty of evidence were assessed using Quality Assessment of Diagnostic-Accuracy Studies (QUADAS-2) and …

Background: Physical violence and aggression (PVA), defined as behaviors with the potential to cause bodily injury, are unfortunate risks in the management of all-cause neurodegenerative dementias. While dementia in Parkinson's disease (PD) may not be evident for many years after clinical onset, neuropsychiatric disturbances occur at all stages of the disease. At issue is whether PVA in PD is associated with clinical factors that can be targets for prevention and management in the absence of a prevailing dementia syndrome.
Objective: This systematic review examined the extent to which PVA in PD without dementia is a clinically significant concern and whether …
