North Texas GME Research Forum 2024

Functional foods are food items that should be consumed as part of a regular diet in order to provide advantages beyond what are typically referred to as traditional nutritional benefits. Furthermore, in order to support the better function claim or the decreased illness risk claim, these positive outcomes must be scientifically proven. Foods with particular health benefits have been referred to as "superfoods" more recently. Superfoods are conceptually defined as foods with high biological value because of their high concentration of bioactive components and high concentration of nutrients, as well as their high bioavailability and bioactivity in the body. As …

40-Day Fit, A Journey For Heroes, Michael B. O'Neill

Doctor of Leadership

This project is a collective portfolio of discovery and development that explores the intersection of societal health and the vitality of the church, recognizing a state of decline in both areas. This critical, yet often overlooked issue, is the foundation of this research-driven initiative. It is a practical process of diagnosis and treatment of a problem or an opportunity, in context, leading to application. The portfolio project represents a journey of discovery and reframing, where research methods, strategic objectives, and project milestones guide the identification of needs, problems, and opportunities. These elements serve as the driving forces behind crafting solutions …

Differences In Urine Creatinine And Osmolality Between Black And White Americans After Accounting For Age, Moisture Intake, Urine Volume, And Socioeconomic Status, Patrick B. Wilson, Ian P. Winter, Josie Burdin

Exercise Science Faculty Publications

Urine osmolality is used throughout research to determine hydration levels. Prior studies have found black individuals to have elevated urine creatinine and osmolality, but it remains unclear which factors explain these findings. This cross-sectional, observational study sought to understand the relationship of self-reported race to urine creatinine and urine osmolality after accounting for age, socioeconomic status, and fluid intake. Data from 1,386 participants of the 2009–2012 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey were utilized. Age, poverty-to-income ratio (PIR), urine flow rate (UFR), fluid intake, estimated lean body mass (LBM), urine creatinine, and urine osmolality were measured. In a sex-specific manner, …

Attributing Ai Authorship: Towards A System Of Icons For Legal And Ethical Disclosure, Joseph J. Avery, Patricia S. Abril, Alissa Del Riego

Articles

Over the past year, the pervasive role of large language models (LLMs) and artificial intelligence (Al) in text generation has precipitated concerns about ethical usage, authorship, and transparent attribution. This has been true in legal practice, academia, and the corporate world, as well as in countless other arenas. In this Article, we identify the gap that has opened between those demanding proper disclosure (we should know when and to what extent Al is an author) and those struggling to respond to these demands. Part of the problem is that there is no system in place, no lingua franca, no set …

Addressing Burn Scarring And Contractures While Measuring Range Of Motion, Josie F. Sylte

Occupational Therapy Capstones

Purpose: In the community of healthcare professionals that work with individuals who have survived a burn injury there has been a shift in the way that range of motion (ROM) is being measured taking into consideration the use of cutaneous functional units (CFUs), multi joint movements, and burn scarring and contractures (Parry et al., 2019). Working with a burn intensive care unit therapy team a need was identified to address therapist education and the integration of revised positioning for measuring ROM following a burn injury and throughout the rehabilitation process.

Method: To determine the needs of the burn facility a …

Strategic Nutritional Interventions With Probiotics And Their Relationship To Performance, Feeding Behavior, And Reticulorumen Environment In Cows And Calves Under Subacute Ruminal Acidosis Risk, Gustavo Mazon Correa Alves

Theses and Dissertations--Animal and Food Sciences

Subacute ruminal acidosis (SARA) is a digestive disorder in ruminants characterized by extended periods of low reticulorumen pH. This digestive disorder is commonly observed in ruminants fed diets with elevated proportions of non-fibrous carbohydrates. This disorder has been vastly studied in adult dairy cattle and has been associated with losses in milk production, changes in feeding behavior, damage to the gastrointestinal tract, and premature culling. Although vastly studied in adult cattle, there is limited research on the effects of SARA in calves. SARA might be prevented by modifying the reticulorumen environment with probiotic supplements containing lactateutilizing bacteria such as Megasphaera …

A Family Perspective On Family Involvement Strategies In A Local Urban Elementary School, Barbara Ann Smith Jan 2024

A Family Perspective On Family Involvement Strategies In A Local Urban Elementary School, Barbara Ann Smith

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

AbstractThe active engagement of parents in the educational experiences of their children has been suggested to support high academic achievement for the children. In the project setting, an urban elementary school, educators were struggling to find effective strategies to promote family involvement in their children’s education. The purpose of this qualitative project study was to investigate family perspectives on family involvement strategies and potential barriers at the project setting and to determine new effective strategies to help them become more involved in their children’s education. The conceptual framework for the project is Epstein’s (2009) framework for parental involvement which explains …

The Future Of Livestock Genetic Engineering In The United States: Going Against The Grain Or With The Herd?, Sam Harvey Jan 2024

The Future Of Livestock Genetic Engineering In The United States: Going Against The Grain Or With The Herd?, Sam Harvey

St. Thomas Law Review

For several years, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) have carried tension over which agency should regulate genetically modified livestock. Recently, this tension has boiled over with the release of many articles and statements from each organization as they battle over regulatory authority, most notably the USDA's claim that they are ready to take the bull by the horns and control the regulation of genetically engineered livestock. This note examines history and present-day practices to predict which agency will succeed in this battle of regulations, the USDA or the FDA.

Doe Not Worry: Expanding Protections For Unaccompanied Children, Heidi E. Davis Jan 2024

Doe Not Worry: Expanding Protections For Unaccompanied Children, Heidi E. Davis

Indiana Journal of Law and Social Equality

A recent Fourth Circuit decision created a circuit split regarding the standard applied to constitutional violations in secure holding facilities. The more “liberal” professional judgment standard—as promulgated by Youngberg v. Romeo and applied to unaccompanied immigrant minors in Doe 4 ex rel. Lopez—is necessary but insufficient for the protection of unaccompanied children. This Note first examines the origins of the professional judgment standard in the Youngberg case. Then, cases are surveyed showing that the Supreme Court has recognized children as a vulnerable population, and current regulations, legislation, and court opinions recognize the vulnerabilities of unaccompanied children. With these ideas in …

Cut The Baby Talk: Negotiating Pregnancy Clauses In Women's Athletic Contracts, Courtney Luis Jan 2024

Cut The Baby Talk: Negotiating Pregnancy Clauses In Women's Athletic Contracts, Courtney Luis

Indiana Journal of Law and Social Equality

Many athletic departments, organizations, teams, and leagues have regulations that address the event of pregnancy in their athletes. As interest and participation in women’s sports continues to grow, along with the number and profitability of female athletes, pregnancy clauses are becoming increasingly common in athletic contracts for women.

Pregnancy clauses are an often overlooked section of athletic contracts and sports deals but can have far-reaching consequences for female athletes. Many athletic departments and organizations have attempted to create standardized regulations on how to deal with female athletes who become pregnant; however, these attempts are usually confusing, unclear, and regularly fail …

Solutions To Period Poverty In The United States, Sanya Surya Jan 2024

Solutions To Period Poverty In The United States, Sanya Surya

AUCTUS: The Journal of Undergraduate Research and Creative Scholarship

Many women around the world lack access to menstrual hygiene products and hygienic, private sanitation facilities: an issue commonly known as “period poverty”. Women who experience this phenomenon often resort to unhealthy alternatives, putting them at higher risk for infections. Period poverty also causes many women to miss significant amounts of school and/or work, resulting in school drop-outs and adverse career outcomes. Menstrual inequities have recently come under greater study in low- to middle-income countries, but evidence suggests that women in the United States are adversely affected by period poverty as well. With this in mind, I set out to …

The Holy Abject: The Narrative Arc Of Female Christian Martyrdom And Its Implications For Subjecthood In The Roman Empire, Gillian Murdock Gardner Jan 2024

The Holy Abject: The Narrative Arc Of Female Christian Martyrdom And Its Implications For Subjecthood In The Roman Empire, Gillian Murdock Gardner

Scripps Senior Theses

This thesis aims to utilize modern critical theory to reveal how the hagiographies of early female Christian martyrs follow a standardized narrative arc. The martyr’s body is hyperfeminized, transformed, and eventually eclipsed in a simultaneous process of unbecoming in the corporeal realm and becoming in a divine register. The martyr’s augmented femininity signals her ability to endure as far as womens’ abject position in the Empire allows, while her bodily transformation conveys a transgression of the ontological pairings of active masculinity and passive femininity that govern Roman social order. Finally, the martyr’s death communicates an imperial attempt to reestablish the …

An Introductory Guide To Developing Liberal Arts And Sciences Education, Azamat Sakiev Jan 2024

An Introductory Guide To Developing Liberal Arts And Sciences Education, Azamat Sakiev

GHEA21 Open Educational Resources

Human learning styles, goals, and beliefs about the purpose of education differ greatly. What should we learn, how do we learn it, and to what end, are some of the key questions that underlie this difference. There is no one-size-fits-all approach to learning because individuals have unique needs, different preferences, and varying aptitudes. Because of this there are several approaches and philosophies to education, of which liberal arts and sciences is one. The task in this guide is to define what this approach is, outline its characteristics, and identify prospective areas for its development in which anyone could contribute.

Reinvigorating Congress's Role In The Administrative State: What The Major Questions Doctrine Suggests About Nondelegation, Patrick Garry, Sidney J. Hardy Jan 2024

Reinvigorating Congress's Role In The Administrative State: What The Major Questions Doctrine Suggests About Nondelegation, Patrick Garry, Sidney J. Hardy

Faculty Publications

In its recent decision in West Virginia v. EPA, the U.S. Supreme Court struck down administrative rules attempting to dramatically transform the electrical power generating industry. The Court's decision rested on its major questions doctrine, which states that on important enough matters the intent of Congress must be clearly expressed. This doctrine goes against the prevailing trend of deference toward the administrative state, as expressed through the permissive nondelegation and Chevron doctrines. While the major questions doctrine seeks to retain some congressional control over important issues, it nonetheless attracts much criticism on an array of grounds. This article proposes an …
