Long-Term Cardiometabolic Effects Of Preconceptional And Prenatal Opioid Exposure In The Adult Offspring, Nermin Hassan Mohamed Selim Ahmed
Long-Term Cardiometabolic Effects Of Preconceptional And Prenatal Opioid Exposure In The Adult Offspring, Nermin Hassan Mohamed Selim Ahmed
Theses and Dissertations--Pharmacology and Nutritional Sciences
Opioid use disorder (OUD), one of the greatest public health threats in the US, requires urgent attention. In 2022, the CDC reported 107,941 overdose deaths, over 70% attributed to synthetic opioids such as fentanyl (FEN). An alarming increase in opioid use disorder (OUD) diagnoses in pregnant people resulted in a 5-fold rise in cases of neonatal opioid withdrawal syndrome (NOWS). This condition elicits sympathetic overactivity, neural hyperexcitability, and a stress reaction characterized by tachycardia and hypertension. Whether prenatal exposure to fentanyl induces cardiovascular dysfunction in the offspring remains undetermined, impeding the timely development of strategies to mitigate OUD-related health risks …

Due to limited access to and low consumption of fruits and vege- tables, older adults are at increased risk of worsening or developing chronic diseases. This paper describes a community-academic partnership that provides a sustainable source of blackberries to attendees of a rural senior center. Qualitative research evaluated the partnership following implementation of a blackberry program. Focus groups and interviews included partners from a senior cen- ter, Cooperative Extension Service, and a detention center. Main themes: group power dynamics influenced communication between research and community leadership teams; unexpected project barriers emerged; and community leadership team sug- gested strategies to promote …
Feeding Systems And Fresh Lamb Color Stability, Koushik Mondal
Feeding Systems And Fresh Lamb Color Stability, Koushik Mondal
Theses and Dissertations--Animal and Food Sciences
Consumers consider the surface color of fresh lamb as the indicator of freshness and wholesomeness, which affects their purchase decisions. The redox chemistry of myoglobin (Mb) determines the color of fresh lamb. Artificial raising on milk replacer (a pre-weaning strategy) as well as red clover supplementation are management strategies used in lamb production. This thesis focuses on the effects of artificial raising on milk replacer and red clover supplementation on the color and oxidative stability of fresh lamb.
In the first experiment, the effect of pre-weaning with milk replacer on the carcass attributes, color stability and lipid oxidation of lamb …

Redefining Public Benefits, Naomi Cahn, June R. Carbone
Redefining Public Benefits, Naomi Cahn, June R. Carbone
Articles
This Article considers the interaction between marriage, households, and public welfare-type benefits. In light of constant cultural and media attention to “the two-parent privilege,” the article argues that the very purpose of public benefits in the modern era is up for redefinition. The information age, much like the industrial revolution before it, has remade the preconditions for entry into the middle class and contributed to new middle-class family strategies geared to the changing labor market realities. This new era, which has increased income instability and employment insecurity, has increased economic inequality and eroded what were once secure pathways into middle-class …

How Do Different Amounts Of Limestone Affect Plant Growth Of Radishes On A Green Roof?, Lauren A. Merrill, Chloe E. Sebaugh, Tytionne C. Bellamy, Madison L. Keller
Science University Research Symposium (SURS)
Limestone has been known to stimulate vegetative growth by neutralizing acidic soils and raising pH. In hopes of preserving plants that hold nutritional, cultural, and medicinal significance, such as radishes, green roofs are also becoming increasingly important resources. To maximize plant growth and space efficiency, this study examined the effects of varying amounts of limestone on radishes grown in a green roof environment. Radish seeds were planted in a variety of limestone conditions including 0 grams, 90.718 grams, 181.437 grams, and 272.156 grams of limestone. After two months, radishes were harvested and weighed to check for growth. The results suggest …

Disparities In Low Birthweight And The Influence Of Access To Food, Maternity Care, And Medicaid Coverage Of Doula Services, Marissa Ann Beldon
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
This dissertation explores the ways in which access acts as both a barrier and facilitator to healthy birth outcomes. In particular, access to food, maternity care, and Medicaid coverage of doula services are explored alongside low birthweight in this dissertation through both population health and health disparity lenses. Low birthweight is a leading cause of infant mortality and thought to reflect nations’ long-term public health problems such as maternal malnutrition and inadequate receipt of maternity care. As such, sufficient access to healthy food and maternity care is essential for healthy birth outcomes.
Chapter 1 of this dissertation contains an introduction …

The Influence Of Intracellular Photosymbiosis On The Evolution And Function Of Cnidarian Immunity, Madison A. Emery
The Influence Of Intracellular Photosymbiosis On The Evolution And Function Of Cnidarian Immunity, Madison A. Emery
Biology Dissertations - Archive
Intracellular photosymbiosis with Symbiodiniaceae is facilitated by cnidarian immunity as it is required for symbiont recognition and is subsequently suppressed to maintain stable intracellular symbiosis. To date, it is unclear how the cnidarian-Symbiodiniaceae symbiosis influences immune gene repertoires, immune gene expression, and disease pathology across its independent evolutions. To address these knowledge gaps, my dissertation approaches studying the cnidarian-Symbiodiniaceae symbiosis through a comparative lens to determine how it shapes immune gene evolution and immune responses in divergent symbiotic cnidarian species. In chapter two I survey eight non-symbiotic and seven symbiotic cnidarians proteomes for four families of pattern recognition receptors (PRRs) …

A food desert is a region where people have limited access to healthful or affordable food usually due to low income and low vehicle access. Food insecurity also has to do with food deserts as food insecurity is a lack of safe and nutritious food for normal growth and development to live a healthy life. Food deserts are relevant because without access to healthy foods people living in food deserts might be at a higher risk of diet related conditions like obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. Research from the American Board of Physician Specialities suggests that eating local can help …

Bariatric surgery is associated with improved outcomes for several cancers, including breast cancer (BC), although the mechanisms mediating this protection are unknown. We hypothesized that elevated bile acid pools detected after bariatric surgery may be factors that contribute to improved BC outcomes. Patients with greater expression of the bile acid receptor FXR displayed improved survival in specific aggressive BC subtypes. FXR is a nuclear hormone receptor activated by primary bile acids. Therefore, we posited that activating FXR using an established FDA-approved agonist would induce anticancer effects. Using in vivo and in vitro approaches, we determined the anti-tumor potential of bile …

The major populations at risk for developing pressure ulcers are older adults who have multiple risk factors that increase their vulnerability, people who are critically ill and those with spinal cord injury/disease. The reported prevalence of pressure ulcers in the United States is 2.5 million. However, this estimate is derived from acute care facilities and does not include people who are living at home or in nursing facilities. Despite the implementation of hospital and facility-based preventive measures, the incidence of pressure ulcers has not decreased in decades. In addition to the burden of pain, infection and death, it is estimated …

Integrated Pest Management Of Maple (Acer) In Midwest Nursery Production, Darcey Hickey
Integrated Pest Management Of Maple (Acer) In Midwest Nursery Production, Darcey Hickey
Department of Entomology: Distance Master of Science Projects
Introduction
In all agricultural settings, damage from arthropod pests is inevitable. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) was introduced in the 1970’s as a response to increased public awareness of the hazardous effects of pesticides in the environment (Frazier, 2010). Ornamental nursery production is an important sector of US agriculture. In ornamental nurseries, pest damage is the leading cause of revenue loss (Braman et al., 2015). IPM has primarily been implemented for agricultural settings and as IPM is specific to each environment, it is important to explore the use of IPM practices in nursery production. As nurseries are found across the United …

Evolution Of The Largest Insect Orders: A Comprehensive Literature Review, Jason Thompson
Department of Entomology: Distance Master of Science Projects
Introduction
Insects are regarded by many to be among the most successful organisms on earth, displaying remarkable diversity, resilience, and adaptations, allowing them the ability to inhabit and exploit a wide array of niche environments. If sheer numbers are utilized as a yardstick by which to measure success, it has been estimated that there may be as many as 10 quintillion insects alive and active at any given time (Sabrosky, 1952). In terms of species diversity, estimates have ranged from as many as 30 million based on research and collections in tropical forest canopies (Erwin, 1982) to more recent, conservative …

Estimation Of Probability Of Habitat Use Of Roosevelt Elk On The Olympic Peninsula, Vincent Michael Gugliotti
Estimation Of Probability Of Habitat Use Of Roosevelt Elk On The Olympic Peninsula, Vincent Michael Gugliotti
Undergraduate Theses, Professional Papers, and Capstone Artifacts
Estimating the probability of habitat use for a particular species is crucial to the direct management and conservation of that species. Without knowledge of habitat preferences, managers cannot effectively focus efforts on vital resources or landscape types. However, modelling probability of habitat use can be done in several ways which leaves room for variation and uncertainty in the estimates produced by each method. This study is an examination of the variation between two estimates of probability of habitat use while focusing on a particular subspecies of elk that inhabits a unique ecosystem relative to other elk subspecies. I modeled elk …

Anti-Patents, Roy Baharad, Stuart Minor Benjamin, Ehud Guttel
University of Chicago Law Review
Conventional wisdom has long perceived the patent and tort systems as separate legal entities, each tasked with a starkly different mission. Patent law rewards novel ideas; tort law deters harmful conduct. Against this backdrop, this Essay uncovers the opposing effects of patent and tort law on innovation, introducing the “injurer-innovator problem.” Patent law incentivizes injurers—often uniquely positioned to make technological breakthroughs—by allowing them to profit from licensing their inventions to competitors. Yet tort law, by imposing liability for failures to invest in care, forces injurers to incur the cost of implementing their own inventions. When the cost of self-implementation exceeds …
