Contemporary Regulatory Policy By M. Eisner, J. Worsham, And E. Ringquist: Lynne Rienner, C. Nicholas Raphael
Contemporary Regulatory Policy By M. Eisner, J. Worsham, And E. Ringquist: Lynne Rienner, C. Nicholas Raphael
The Geographical Bulletin
In Contemporary Regulatory Policy, Eisner, Worsham, and Ringquist provide the novice and seasoned student of regulatory policy with an innovative and in- tegrative perspective on the sometimes 'wonk-ish' world of policy analysis. Using jargon sparingly, a predictable organization template for each chapter, an accessible, and at times irreverent, writing style, the book examines the multifaceted public policy process, in general and government regulation, specifically. Through the construction of several substantively and conceptually different case studies, the book examines the evolution of U.S. regulatory legislation. From the early industry-specific controls to the establishment of wider society-wide programs, the authors demonstrate the …

UNLABELLED: Inorganic polyphosphate (polyP) is an evolutionary and ancient polymer composed by orthophosphate units linked by phosphoanhydride bonds. In mammalian cells, polyP shows a high localization in mammalian mitochondria, and its regulatory role in various aspects of bioenergetics has already been demonstrated, via molecular mechanism(s) yet to be fully elucidated. In recent years, a role for polyP in signal transduction, from brain physiology to the bloodstream, has also emerged.
OBJECTIVE: In this manuscript, we explored the intriguing possibility that the effects of polyP on signal transduction could be mechanistically linked to those exerted on bioenergetics.
METHODS: To conduct our studies, …

Fitting Food To Circumstances: Potential Contributions Of Philippine Culinary Heritage To Disaster Risk Reduction, Felice Prudente Sta. Maria
Budhi: A Journal of Ideas and Culture
Cultural legacies include a society’s emergency preparedness. Geological hazards such as the movement of the West Valley Fault will result in a metadisaster. Food security is fundamental to community resilience, a strategy for disaster risk reduction. Heritage food practices may contribute to food security during emergencies and disasters. Seasonal weather conditions and natural calamities have forced continuing developments in Philippine cuisine. Convenience foods, home and urban gardening, as well as food preservation continue to be altered appropriately to variations in societal anxieties, aspirations, and hopefully now, disaster preparedness.

The U.S. Clean Water Act is believed to have driven widespread decreases in pollutants from point sources and developed areas, but has not substantially affected nutrient pollution from agriculture. Today, the highest nutrient concentrations in surface waters are often associated with agricultural production. In this Perspective, we explore whether challenges stemming from the Clean Water Act’s inability to mitigate agricultural nutrient pollution are also exacerbated by coarse nutrient monitoring. We evaluate the current state of nutrient monitoring in surface waters of the contiguous U.S. relative to agricultural nutrient inputs to assess how monitoring effort varies across agriculturally intensive areas. The …

Soybean is a major legume crop cultivated globally due to the high quality and quantity of its seed protein and oil. However, drought stress is the most significant factor that decreases soybean yield, and more than 90% of US soybean acreage is dependent on rainfall. Water use efficiency (WUE) is positively correlated with the carbon isotopic ratio 13C/12C (C13 ratio) and selecting soybean varieties for high C13 ratio may enhance WUE and help improve tolerance to drought. Our study objective was to identify genetic loci associated with C13 ratio using a diverse set of 205 soybean maturity …
