High tunnels offer several benefits to specialty crop growers including crop protection and season extension. Although crops are actively grown in high tunnels during the winter, few management recommendations exist for winter pests that are actively feeding and reproducing in this protected environment. This study evaluated the efficacy of three commercially available predators used for the augmentative biological control of aphids, Adalia bipunctata, Orius insidiosus, and Chrysoperla carnea, in combination with OMRI-approved pesticides labeled for aphids on spinach and strawberry. Pesticides included PyGanic (pyrethrin), Neemix (azadirachtin), and Sil-MATRIX (Potassium silicate). Laboratory and field experiments indicate high survival of biocontrol agents …

Masters Projects
The academic success of incoming students has been a growing concern for colleges and universities. The number of students ending up in academic jeopardy has been skyrocketing. While universities have support for academic success, the resources must be more utilized. These supports also tend to work in silos instead of functioning as a community support. This project explains the demographics of college students and the types of support that these students would best benefit from. To adequately support students who the universities are at the most significant risk of failing, colleges need to expand their support services. In response to …

Type 2 Diabetes And Marital Quality Declines Moderated By Positive Health Behaviors, Rebekah Case Fankhauser
Theses and Dissertations
Type 2 diabetes affects more than one-quarter of older adults in the United States. Many older adults manage type 2 diabetes (T2D) in the context of marriage, although few studies have acknowledged the effect the illness has on marital quality. The current study examined how the presence of T2D in later life relates to marital quality, and how positive health behaviors--diet, physical activity, and sleep--can moderate the relationship between T2D and marital quality. Data from the 1,200 married older adults in the Life and Family Legacies study were used to estimate moderation models using structural equation modeling in Mplus. Results …

Declines in biodiversity generated by anthropogenic stressors at both species and population levels can alter emergent processes instrumental to ecosystem function and resilience. As such, understanding the role of biodiversity in ecosystem function and its response to climate perturbation is increasingly important, especially in tropical systems where responses to changes in biodiversity are less predictable and more challenging to assess experimentally. Using large-scale transplant experiments conducted at five neotropical sites, we documented the impacts of changes in intraspecific and interspecific plant richness in the genus Piper on insect herbivory, insect richness, and ecosystem resilience to perturbations in water availability. We …

This article considers the possibilities and limits of reimagining international development policy by taking the values, practices, and worldviews of Indigenous communities as its starting point. Drawing on ethnographic research in Guatemala, we contrast the development industry’s overwhelming focus on economic growth as the gold standard of well-being with the perspective of Maya-Achí groups, who insist that growth and modernization must not come at the expense of the ecology, food sovereignty, or Indigenous ways of life connected to the land. We argue that the Maya-Achi organizations with whom we collaborate offer a philosophy and practice better attuned to the urgency …

Female Athlete Triad And Bone Stress Injuries, Amanda Nguyen
Honors College Theses
The Female Athlete Triad is still an ongoing and developing diagnosis that analyzes low energy availability, and its impact on menstrual dysfunction and bone mineral density in women. Through researching I analyzed what the Female Athlete Triad was, how it impacts our body and performance, and specifically how it relates to bone stress injuries. It was found that athletes with low energy availability are more likely to develop menstrual dysfunction, leading to low bone mineral density due to the negative impacts that both low energy availability and menstrual dysfunction have on important hormones. With low bone mineral density and compensations …

Pressure injuries are an ongoing problem for people over the age of 65 who have chronic comorbid conditions. Many interventions have been implemented to decrease pressure injuries. Pressure injuries cause pain and can lead to medical issues including sepsis and death. The cost of pressure injuries is high due to the medical complications that result from the pressure injury. Client repositioning is an extremely important intervention to prevent pressure injuries. Risk assessment is also important in order to identify clients at risk to support early interventions. This quality improvement project focused on educating staff and implementing best practices to prevent …
Where Do Families Come From? The Law Of Family Definition, Katharine Baker
Where Do Families Come From? The Law Of Family Definition, Katharine Baker
BYU Law Review
Why does the law recognize families? Sometimes family recognition serves to foster cooperative communities in which sharing norms, more than the market or the government, determine rights and obligations. These communities often take care of dependents and serve as important sources of individual self-determination and pluralism. At other times, family delineation serves a corrective purpose, when it forces family members who are not sharing with each other to do so. At still other times, family delineation serves a distributive purpose, as when the law uses “family” definition to distribute resources to determine an intended beneficiary. This use of “family” for …
