Type 2 diabetes mellitus is a chronic, noninfectious disease that affects a large population of adults in the world. Typically, it is associated with obesity, a sedentary lifestyle, and the consumption of undesirable meals (Nakrani et al., 2020/2023). Even with various treatments available for type 2 diabetes, most patients find it challenging to maintain a steady blood glucose level.

"A Life Altering And Special Journey": The Lasting Impact Of Mindfulness On Semester-Long Study Abroad Participants, Ana Conboy, Kevin Clancy

Languages and Cultures Faculty Publications

Education abroad is held up as a high-impact practice with the potential to engage college and university students in a transformative learning experience (Kuh, 2008). The Institute for International Education (IIE) reports that 347,099 U.S. students received academic credit for study abroad during the 2018-2019 academic school year (IIE). Extensive research into student learning gains abroad have demonstrated that developing student metacognition, or one’s ability to be intentionally self-reflective, is central to transformative learning in the study abroad experience (Vande Berg et al., 2012; Zull, 2012). Consequently, international educators are continually searching for pedagogies (praxis) to facilitate metacognitive learning within …

Ocular Gene Transfer In The Spotlight: Implications Of Newspaper Content For Clinical Communications, Shelly Benjaminy, Tania M. Bubela Jul 2024

Ocular Gene Transfer In The Spotlight: Implications Of Newspaper Content For Clinical Communications, Shelly Benjaminy, Tania M. Bubela

Office of the Provost

Background: Ocular gene transfer clinical trials are raising hopes for blindness treatments and attracting media attention. News media provide an accessible health information source for patients and the public, but are often criticized for overemphasizing benefits and underplaying risks of novel biomedical interventions. Overly optimistic portrayals of unproven interventions may influence public and patient expectations; the latter may cause patients to downplay risks and over-emphasize benefits, with implications for informed consent for clinical trials. We analyze the news media communications landscape about ocular gene transfer and make recommendations for improving communications between clinicians and potential trial participants in light of …

Journal of Asian Midwives (JAM)

Background: Low-and middle-income countries including Pakistan still have low breastfeeding rates and infant feeding remains a concern. Human milk banks (HMBs) play a crucial role in neonatal and infant health by providing safe, pasteurized donor human milk to infants who do not have access to their mother's own milk, particularly preterm and low-birth-weight infants. The perception regarding the concept and use of HMBs has yet to be explored in several contexts, especially in the low-and middle-income countries including Pakistan.
Aim: To explore the perceptions of mothers regarding human milk banks in Pakistan, focusing on the barriers and enablers to …

Hiv Estimation Using Population-Based Surveys With Non-Response: A Partial Identification Approach, Oyelola A. Adegboye, Tomoki Fujii, Denis H. Y. Leung, Siyu Li Jul 2024

Hiv Estimation Using Population-Based Surveys With Non-Response: A Partial Identification Approach, Oyelola A. Adegboye, Tomoki Fujii, Denis H. Y. Leung, Siyu Li

Research Collection School Of Economics

HIV estimation using data from the demographic and health surveys (DHS) is limited by the presence of non-response and test refusals. Conventional adjustments such as imputation require the data to be missing at random. Methods that use instrumental variables allow the possibility that prevalence is different between the respondents and non-respondents, but their performance depends critically on the validity of the instrument. Using Manski's partial identification approach, we form instrumental variable bounds for HIV prevalence from a pool of candidate instruments. Our method does not require all candidate instruments to be valid. We use a simulation study to evaluate and …

Expanding Time Covered For Medical Nutrition Therapy: A Need For Clear Reporting On The Intensity Of Nutrition Interventions, Rosa K. Hand

Faculty Scholarship

Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT) is an evidence-based health care service that helps people improve their food and nutrition habits to positively influence health outcomes and quality of life, and is part of a suite of complementary interventions that can be implemented for effective disease prevention and management. However, the dose (ie, length and number of sessions) of MNT that is covered by health care payers in outpatient settings is highly variable and may not be adequate to achieve the desired clinical outcomes and cost savings. Interest in improving access to adequate doses of MNT provided by registered dietitian nutritionists (RDNs), …

The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) is the custodian of …

Beyond Reform: Food Sovereignty And The Future Of Global Food Systems, Smita Narula Jul 2024

Beyond Reform: Food Sovereignty And The Future Of Global Food Systems, Smita Narula

Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications

We live in a deeply destructive food system, and the need for alternatives is clear. Yet state and corporate actors, beholden to an extractive, industrial model of food production, continue to push for incremental reforms instead of transformative action. In response, food sovereignty movements are charting a normative path in international human rights law to secure peasants' rights and promote more sustainable and just alternatives to our industrial food system. Against the backdrop of the political economy of industrial agriculture, this Article compares mainstream approaches to food systems reform with transformative alternatives rooted in food sovereignty. It explores two key …

A Quality Improvement Project To Reduce Facility-Acquired Pressure Injuries, Carolina Rosario

All Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Scholarly Projects

Problem: Facility-acquired pressure injuries (FAPIs) pose significant risks to patient outcomes and healthcare costs ($500 to $70,000 per PI) in subacute rehabilitation (SAR) facilities. An assessment in a SAR identified a concerning pressure injury (PI) rate of 15.3%, exceeding the national benchmark of 10% for such facilities. This prompted an evidence-based quality improvement (QI) initiative.

Aim of the Project: This project aimed to reduce FAPI rates by 30% or greater among patients 65 and older using a PI prevention bundle called SSKINS (Skin, Surface, Keep moving, Incontinence/moisture, Nutrition/hydration, Self-management).

Perioperative Cannabis Use In Bariatric Patients: A Review Of Outcomes And Proposed Clinical Pathway For Management, Meghan H. Maceyko, Marc Neff, Jonathan Halevy, Marguerite Dunham

Jefferson Health - New Jersey Papers

Legalization of marijuana has led to increased prevalence of medical and recreational cannabis use, underscoring the importance for anesthesiologists, surgeons, and perioperative physicians to understand the effects of this drug in patient care. Bariatric surgical patients represent a unique target population to understand peri-operative cannabis use and its effects as these patients undergo an extensive preoperative psychological and nutritional evaluation. Standardized guidelines on cannabis use in bariatric surgery are lacking and many clinicians remain uncertain on how to handle cannabis use in the peri-operative period. Here, we summarize the data on cannabis use in bariatric patients, specifically exploring anesthetic considerations, …

Vitamin C Extraction From Whey Protein Concentrate, Sophia Garcia-Buenrostro, Mia Rheede, Owen Mcdougal

Idaho Conference on Undergraduate Research

With the growing public use of protein powders and dietary supplements to enhance nutrient intake, accurately quantifying vitamins in fortified foods is becoming increasingly important. Measuring vitamin C in whey protein concentrate (WPC) powder is essential for maintaining nutritional quality and meeting regulatory standards in food. Vitamin degradation over time complicates accurate product labeling and can pose health risks, making reliable methods to monitor vitamin content and predict the necessary overage to meet end-of-shelf-life claims essential. This study aimed to develop an extraction method for this water-soluble vitamin from WPC, using protein precipitation with methanol and hydrochloric acid. High-performance liquid …

Exploring The Functional Significance Of A Yap1 Missense Variant Of Uncertain Significance In Caenorhabditis Elegans, Nathan Jones

Theses

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a complex disorder with various implications, such as polycystic ovaries, visceral obesity, and increased risk of cancer. YAP1 was recently identified as a gene of interest in the development of PCOS. Researchers have established that single nucleotide variants in YAP1 are likely to play a role in PCOS development. This project aims to provide insight into the potential impact of a YAP1 variant of uncertain significance (VUS). Studies in C. elegans have established yap-1 as a nematode ortholog for human YAP1. A YAP1 VUS was identified through ClinVar, YAP1 c.1015A>G (p.Asn339Asp). Evolutionary conservation …
