Could Measuring Factors Other Than A Lack Of Financial Resources Help In Achieving The Zero Hunger Goal, Jillian Hyink, Brandon R. Mcfadden, Brandy E. Phipps, Craig Gundersen Sep 2024

Could Measuring Factors Other Than A Lack Of Financial Resources Help In Achieving The Zero Hunger Goal, Jillian Hyink, Brandon R. Mcfadden, Brandy E. Phipps, Craig Gundersen

Agricultural Economics and Agribusiness Faculty Publications and Presentations

The second Sustainable Development Goal of Zero Hunger, defined by the United Nations, broadly focuses on several dimensions of food access and availability, including measures of hunger and undernourishment, food insecurity, and malnutrition. Progress toward the Zero Hunger goal is monitored using indicators like the Prevalence of Undernourishment and the prevalence of moderate or severe food insecurity. These indicators are widely regarded as accurately portraying the underlying phenomena of concern. There are, however, other considerations one may want to include when considering the broader food system, including the role of food access and sovereignty in the rural areas of low-income …

Of Geese And Grass: Investigating Impacts Of Brant Grazing On Eeelgrass, Dakota L. Osborne Sep 2024

Of Geese And Grass: Investigating Impacts Of Brant Grazing On Eeelgrass, Dakota L. Osborne

Master's Theses

Grazing pressure is important in structuring plant communities, particularly in aquatic environments. Eelgrass (Zostera marina), a keystone species in estuaries across North America, is experiencing widespread population declines. As a keystone species, eelgrass provides numerous important functions, including: 1) water filtration, 2) sediment stabilization, 3) providing refuge and nursery habitat for numerous species, and 4) carbon sequestration. Benefits which could be lost if eelgrass beds continue to diminish. California has experienced some of the greatest eelgrass declines, and Morro Bay, CA experienced a 96% decrease in eelgrass from 2007 to 2017. Most studies to date have examined bottom-up …

Influence Of Rearing Method On The Behaviour And Welfare Of Assaf Lambs During The Neonatal Period, Miroslav Simeonov, David L. Harmon, Ina Stoycheva

Animal and Food Sciences Faculty Publications

The present study aimed to determine the influence of rearing method on behaviour and welfare in Assaf lambs during the first two weeks of the neonatal period, in an intensive rearing system. The experiment was conducted with 24 Assaf lambs, in which two methods of management were applied – natural rearing (NR) and artificial rearing (AR). Forced separation of lambs from their mothers caused 74% fewer suckling attempts during the first three days of the neonatal period, which reduced suckling time by 57%. The lambs reared under NR, spent more time moving and less time standing and lying. Overall, it …

Development Of Extruded Puffed Snack Utilizing Carrot Pomace, Bean Flour, And Rice Starch As Primary Ingredients, Julia Zoe Sep 2024

Development Of Extruded Puffed Snack Utilizing Carrot Pomace, Bean Flour, And Rice Starch As Primary Ingredients, Julia Zoe

Master's Theses

Every year, the carrot industry worldwide wastes up to 50% of carrots as raw material due to processing (Šeregelj et al., 2020). When carrots are juiced, the remaining fibrous pulp is often discarded as carrot pomace. In order to redirect this food waste, the first objective of this research was to optimize formulations for an extruded puffed snack that is most similar to commercially available puffed snacks, utilizing baby lima bean flour and carrot pomace

Hardness (kg), cross-sectional expansion ratio, bulk density (g/cm3), moisture content (%), water activity, specific mechanical energy (kJ/kg), carotenoid concentration (ppm), and total dietary …

Metabolic Cell Death In Cancer: Ferroptosis, Cuproptosis, Disulfidptosis, And Beyond, Chao Mao, Min Wang, Li Zhuang, Boyi Gan Sep 2024

Metabolic Cell Death In Cancer: Ferroptosis, Cuproptosis, Disulfidptosis, And Beyond, Chao Mao, Min Wang, Li Zhuang, Boyi Gan

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Cell death resistance represents a hallmark of cancer. Recent studies have identified metabolic cell death as unique forms of regulated cell death resulting from an imbalance in the cellular metabolism. This review discusses the mechanisms of metabolic cell death-ferroptosis, cuproptosis, disulfidptosis, lysozincrosis, and alkaliptosis-and explores their potential in cancer therapy. Our review underscores the complexity of the metabolic cell death pathways and offers insights into innovative therapeutic avenues for cancer treatment.

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Background: Peritoneal carcinomatosis (PC) is common in patients with advanced gynecologic and gastrointestinal cancers. Frequently, patients with PC undergo palliative surgery or procedures to manage disease-related complications and side effects. However, there are limited data regarding patients' and family caregivers' decision-making processes about these procedures. Thus, we sought to describe the decision-making experiences of patients with PC who elect to pursue palliative surgical procedures and their family caregivers.

Methods: We conducted a secondary analysis of qualitative data collected during a pilot randomized controlled trial of BOLSTER, a nurse-led telehealth intervention for patients with PC and their caregivers after an acute …

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Telomerase is associated with cellular aging, and its presence limits cellular lifespan. Telomerase by preventing telomere shortening can extend the number of cell divisions for cancer cells. In adult pancreatic cells, telomeres gradually shorten, while in precancerous lesions of cancer, telomeres in cells are usually significantly shortened. At this time, telomerase is still in an inactive state, and it is not until before and after the onset of cancer that telomerase is reactivated, causing cancer cells to proliferate. Methylation of the telomerase reverse transcriptase (TERT) promoter and regulation of telomerase by lactate dehydrogenase B (LDHB) is the mechanism of telomerase …

While lysine methylation is well-known for regulating gene expression transcriptionally, its implications in translation have been largely uncharted. Trimethylation at lysine 22 (K22me3) on RPL40, a core ribosomal protein located in the GTPase activation center, was first reported 27 years ago. Yet, its methyltransferase and role in translation remain unexplored. Here, we report that SMYD5 has robust in vitro activity toward RPL40 K22 and primarily catalyzes RPL40 K22me3 in cells. The loss of SMYD5 and RPL40 K22me3 leads to reduced translation output and disturbed elongation as evidenced by increased ribosome collisions. SMYD5 and RPL40 K22me3 are upregulated in hepatocellular carcinoma …

Calcium Rescues Streptococcus Pneumoniae D39 Δmnte Manganese-Sensitive Growth Phenotype, Reuben Opoku, Edgar Carrasco, Nicholas R De Lay, Julia E Martin Sep 2024

Calcium Rescues Streptococcus Pneumoniae D39 Δmnte Manganese-Sensitive Growth Phenotype, Reuben Opoku, Edgar Carrasco, Nicholas R De Lay, Julia E Martin

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Calcium (Ca2+) functions as a universal signal messenger in eukaryotes but in bacteria, the physiological roles for Ca2+ are limited. Here, we examine the role of Ca2+ in Streptococcus pneumoniae during manganese (Mn2+) intoxication. S. pneumoniae mntE mutants, lacking the Mn2+ efflux transporter, exhibit impaired growth due to accumulation of Mn2+ when exposed to elevated exogenous Mn2+. This Mn2+-sensitive growth defect is restored to wild-type growth level by exogenous Ca2+, in a Ca2+-dependent manner. Despite growth restoration of the mntE mutant to wild-type levels, cellular Mn2+ remains elevated in this strain. Bacterial capsule production is also increased for the mntE …

Political Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

Hexarelin modulates stress effects on ghrelin system activity in growing lambs. Folia Biologica (Kraków) 72 : 87-96. Hexarelin is a synthetic ligand for the growth hormone secretagogue receptor 1a (GHSR-1a), also known as the ghrelin receptor. Ghrelin and hexarelin have been observed to influence the HPA axis by increasing the circulating concentrations of both adrenocorticotropin and adrenal glucocorticoid in rats and humans. The aim of this study was to assess the effects of hexarelin on the ghrelin system and the growth hormone (GH)–insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) axis in lambs stressed by an emotional factor – isolation. The isolation stress …
