Essays On Homelessness, Angela Jean Wyse
Essays On Homelessness, Angela Jean Wyse
Dissertation Awards
Despite widespread concern about people experiencing homelessness, fundamental questions about this vulnerable and difficult-to-study population are unresolved. This dissertation draws on new data and innovative methods to fill critical gaps in our understanding of homelessness in the United States. The introduction discusses the general problem of homelessness, the state of existing literature, and the contributions and limitations of these essays. The first chapter examines the completeness and reliability of available data sources and develops a new estimate of the U.S. homeless population size. The second chapter examines the level and longitudinal patterns of income and safety net participation for people …
Relationship Between Counselor Educators’ Intrinsic Religiosity, Multicultural Counseling Competence, And Spiritual Competence, Theresa Lynn Brixius
Relationship Between Counselor Educators’ Intrinsic Religiosity, Multicultural Counseling Competence, And Spiritual Competence, Theresa Lynn Brixius
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Religion and spirituality are vital components of multicultural competence, which are key ethical guidelines outlined by the American Counseling Association and the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs. Clients have reported that religion and spirituality are important in their lives; however, counseling students commonly feel unprepared in their training to address the topic with clients. Grounded in multicultural counseling theory (MCT) and namaste theory, the purpose of this quantitative correlational study was to describe the relationship between counselor educators’ intrinsic religiosity (IR), multicultural counseling competence (MCC), and spiritual competence (SC). Participants included fifty-six doctoral-level counselor educators recruited …
Staff Education To Improve Medical Adherence Among African American Males With Hypertension, Veronica Ebere Ani
Staff Education To Improve Medical Adherence Among African American Males With Hypertension, Veronica Ebere Ani
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Hypertension (HTN) is the chief cause of cardiovascular disease in the United States. Due to the mortality and morbidity and the increased healthcare costs associated with HTN, nursing staff need to have knowledge to control and help patients manage the condition. HTN disproportionately affects African American men due to non-adherence to medication, lifestyle issues, and health disparities. Nurses can only support patients managing HTN if they have current evidence-based knowledge. Staff knowledge deficit was a significant issue affecting the clinic's management and control of HTN. Providers' knowledge gap was considered a leading factor in patient nonadherence to prescribed antihypertensive medications. …

Childhood Trauma As An Influencing Factor On Obesity Among Black Women, Andréa Autum Michel
Childhood Trauma As An Influencing Factor On Obesity Among Black Women, Andréa Autum Michel
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Childhood trauma and obesity have a significant impact on development throughout the lifespan. Black women have the highest prevalence of obesity and experience more severe and a greater number of traumatic events than their White peers. The purpose of this phenomenological study was to explore how Black women perceived the role of childhood trauma in their struggles with obesity. Bronfenbrenner’s ecological systems theory served as the theoretical framework for this study. The central research question explored the experiences of Black women who experienced childhood trauma and were struggling with obesity as adults. A secondary question explored coping mechanisms developed to …

Effectiveness Of The Well-Being Path Program In Supporting Student Retention And College Completion, Vanessa Natasaha Williams
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Student retention at the study site community college had decreased, which negatively impacted funding. Increased student support that incorporates elements of the positive emotion, engagement, relationships, meaning, and accomplishment (PERMA) model could improve retention rates. This mixed-methods case study examined the effectiveness of a mentoring program called the Well-Being Path Program (Path) at the community college, which incorporated elements of Seligman’s PERMA model. The data used for this study consisted of student exit surveys and the community college’s institutional enrollment, retention, and transfer data. Results showed that Path students had a higher average grade point average and transfer rate than …
Lotus Blossom: A Review Of Alan Hovhaness's Saxophone Music, Jason Todd Oates
Lotus Blossom: A Review Of Alan Hovhaness's Saxophone Music, Jason Todd Oates
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
This dissertation provides saxophonists with a complete overview of Alan Hovhaness’s collective saxophone music, including detailed information about each piece’s historical and cultural significance. Hovhaness composed eleven pieces for the saxophone and chamber ensemble. Since many were not published until later in his life, there is minimal scholarly writing about them. The pieces were composed over two periods of Hovhaness’s life, 1949 to 1954 and 1976 and 1984. His saxophone music from both eras is analyzed, and the details of each composition in relation to his career and personal life are discussed. Additionally, how these pieces were received by the …
The Importance Of Monitoring Beef Cattle Body Condition, David Secrist
The Importance Of Monitoring Beef Cattle Body Condition, David Secrist
All Current Publications
A body condition scoring system commonly used in the U.S. is an objective effort to quantify a cow’s body condition with ratings from 1 (severely emaciated and weak) to 9 (excessively obese), resulting in a body condition score (BCS). Optimal BCS in commercial cow/calf operation is from 5 to 7, depending on the production stage, feed resources, and the animal’s age. Reproductive efficiency is critical to operational success and is closely tied to BCS. This fact sheet discusses why BCS is important and how to apply BCS to a herd effectively.
Large Dams Establishment Impacts On Different Environmental Aspects: A Review, Anas Ahmad
Large Dams Establishment Impacts On Different Environmental Aspects: A Review, Anas Ahmad
AUIQ Technical Engineering Science
The construction of large dams has been an essential component of the development of global infrastructure, offering significant advantages such as ensuring water storage, reducing the risk of flooding, and producing about 20% of the world's electricity through hydropower. On the other hand, these structures have significant and varied environmental effects. The environmental effects of large dams are critically examined in this analysis, with an emphasis on four main areas: fish biodiversity, riparian vegetation, sediment deposition, and water quality. The study estimates the degree of these consequences by examining global case studies and evaluating data from over 145 significant rivers …

Despite the initial hope inspired by the 2015 Paris Agreement, the world is now dangerously close to breaching its target of limiting global multiyear mean heating to 1·5°C. Annual mean surface temperature reached a record high of 1·45°C above the pre-industrial baseline in 2023, and new temperature highs were recorded throughout 2024. The resulting climatic extremes are increasingly claiming lives and livelihoods worldwide.

Comparison Of Efficient Deep Learning Architectures For Lactobacillus Species Identification, Dea Aisyah Rusmawati, Ishak Ariawan, Afrinal Firmanda
Karbala International Journal of Modern Science
Identifying microorganism species, such as Lactobacillus, is essential in ensuring the food products' quality and safety. Traditional laboratory practice requires expert knowledge and experience, but the method is expensive and time-consuming due to complex sample preparation. Faster, more accurate, and cheaper computational methods, such as transfer learning technology, are needed for the Lactobacillus species classification. The technique has been effective in a variety of image recognition contexts. Deep learning architecture can also be applied as an innovative strategy for digital image-based identification. Therefore, this research aims to compare several deep-learning architectures in classifying bacterial strains of Lactobacillus. The four architectures …
What We Owe Our Students: The Good Place, Pedagogy, And The Architecture Of Engaged Learning, Shala A. Mills, Darrell Hamlin
What We Owe Our Students: The Good Place, Pedagogy, And The Architecture Of Engaged Learning, Shala A. Mills, Darrell Hamlin
Dialogue: The Interdisciplinary Journal of Popular Culture and Pedagogy
Pedagogy is the architecture of a learning environment. The discipline of philosophy has often operated according to a pedagogy of conversation, clarity, and reflection, certainly since the era of Socratic dialogue in the streets of Athens. We argue that The Good Place occupies that space, re-setting this pedagogy as an architecture of learning through entertainment associated with ultimate matters of eternal disposition. A critical character driving conversation, clarity, and reflection across four seasons of the story’s arc is a philosopher – doomed by their own indecisive flaws – who teaches deep understanding of ethical development through a variety of relevant …

The Social Determinants Of Sexual And Reproductive Health In Integrative Sex And Couples Counseling: A Structural Competence Perspective, Ayla J. Goktan, Melissa C. Henry
Journal of Counseling Sexology & Sexual Wellness: Research, Practice, and Education
The Multicultural and Social Justice Counseling Competencies (MSJCC; Ratts et al., 2015) call for counselors to address equity issues via social justice and advocacy. One equity issue relevant to counseling sexology is sexual and reproductive health inequities. This article applies the social determinants of sexual and reproductive health (SDSRH) to counseling sexology, specifically integrative sex and couples counseling, to address health inequities. A fictional case study incorporates the SDSRH from a cross-theoretical structural competence perspective. Future research should further elaborate SDSRH frameworks and evaluate the efficacy of their clinical applications.

A Systematic Review Of The Long-Term Efficacy Of Physical Activity Interventions In Reducing Risk Factors For Obesity In Adults, Jude Ominyi, Andrew Clifton, Noreen Cushen-Brewster
International Journal of Physical Activity and Health
Background: Regular physical activity (PA) provides numerous health advantages, including lowering mortality rates and preventing obesity. Despite well-established guidelines advising 150-300 minutes of moderate-intensity or 75-150 minutes of vigorous-intensity aerobic PA weekly, sedentary lifestyles remain prevalent, especially in industrialised nations. This systematic review examines the long-term effectiveness (12-24 months) of PA interventions aimed at reducing obesity risk among adults, with a particular focus on identifying strategies that promote sustained adherence.
Methods: A comprehensive literature search was performed using multiple databases, including Cochrane Library, PubMed, and Embase, focusing on studies published between January 2004 and January 2024. The inclusion …

A Framework To Conceptualize Social Prescribing Services From A Prevention Perspective, Adrienne Alayli, Kerryn Husk, Vashti Berry, Freia De Bock
Peninsula Medical School
Objective: Social prescribing models are expanding worldwide to serve multiple goals, such as attending to social conditions that affect people's health, supporting patients with mental health issues or other long-term conditions, facilitating community building and reducing demands on the health care system. Implicitly, many social prescribing services seek to promote health, prevent morbidity or deterioration of disease. Given that the scientific literature currently does not systematically describe these services as preventive service models, we propose a framework to explicitly conceptualize social prescribing from a prevention perspective. Methods: Based on concepts from prevention science (e.g., classifications of prevention approaches), and a …
Where Do Gorillas Get Their Protein? Plant-Based Diet For A Healthier Lifestyle, Cheryl Track
Where Do Gorillas Get Their Protein? Plant-Based Diet For A Healthier Lifestyle, Cheryl Track
International Journal of Faith Community Nursing
After watching what they thought to be an interesting and educational documentary on nutrition, my friends, Sharon and Scott, felt inspired to challenge themselves by undertaking some dietary changes apart from their regular eating habits. What started out as a short “trial run” to explore plant-based dieting, Sharon and Scott quickly realized this alternative eating style proved beneficial. In a short period of time, two individuals with their own fitness and wellness goals saw noticeable changes in lab results and experienced positive changes to their overall health – enough evidence leaving them convinced the “trial run” with plant-based dieting should …

The tremendous development in various industrial and agricultural fields has led to an increase in pollution of soil and water bodies, which has been reflected in the quality of agricultural products and their quantity, as well as the damage that this pollution causes to human health and the growth system of other living organisms. Many soils are polluted with heavy metal elements like lead (Pb), zinc (Zn), cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), copper (Cu), iron (Fe), aluminum (Al), and mercury (Hg), which makes the environmental situation more difficult. As part of this sensitive stage, monitoring and analysis have become essential to …

BACKGROUND: Continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) and continuous subcutaneous insulin infusions (CSIIs) are the current standard treatment devices for type 1 diabetes (T1D) management. With a high prevalence of T1D beginning in pediatrics and carrying into adulthood, insufficient glycemic control leads to poor patient outcomes. Dermatologic complications such as contact dermatitis, lipodystrophies, and inflammatory lesions are among those associated with CGM and CSII, which reduce glycemic control and patient compliance.
OBJECTIVE: This systematic review aims to explore the current literature surrounding dermatologic complications of CGM and CSII as well as the impact on patient outcomes.
METHODS: A systematic review of the …
