Valorization Of Spent Vetiver Roots For Biochar Generation, Sameer Neve, Dibyendu Sarkar, Manas Warke, Teresa Bandosz, Rupali Datta

Michigan Tech Publications

Vetiver root is widely used to produce essential oils in the aromatherapy industry. After the extraction of oil, the roots are disposed of as waste. The central objective of this research was to explore the conversion of this waste into a resource using a circular economy framework. To generate biochar, vetiver roots were pyrolyzed at different temperatures (300, 500, and 700 °C) and residence times (30, 60, and 120 min). Analysis showed the root biochar generated at 500 °C and held for 60 min had the highest surface area of 308.15 m2/g and a yield of 53.76%, in addition to …

Understanding Early Learning Educator Perspectives On Retention In Western Washington State: A Qualitative Inquiry, Nouanechanh Kitnikone, Susan Lee, Laura Walker

Educational and Organizational Learning and Leadership Dissertations

There is a significant issue surrounding the retention of educators within the early childhood education field. The COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated the fragile system that was already malfunctioning, and there is hyperfocus on determining how to increase early educator retention and reduce attrition levels. This inquiry utilized participatory action research (PAR) through a collaborative partnership with an early learning center in Western Washington State. Researchers used a transformative worldview with an adaptive leadership focus as the theoretical framework with an appreciative inquiry lens. The study aimed to identify factors and motivations that contribute to the retention of educators in the Early …

Against The Current: Charting A New Course For Human Rights In Sustainable Fisheries Management, James H. Stitt Jan 2024

Against The Current: Charting A New Course For Human Rights In Sustainable Fisheries Management, James H. Stitt

Cardozo International & Comparative Law Review

The note advocates for a paradigm shift in fisheries management, moving beyond Western-centric regulatory frameworks to a holistic, human rights-based approach that integrates sustainable development, biodiversity conservation, and social justice. It emphasizes the critical role of small-scale fisheries and Indigenous communities in achieving ecological and economic sustainability, arguing that their traditional knowledge and practices are essential for effective resource management. The analysis highlights the limitations of existing international frameworks, such as the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (LOSC) and the Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries (CCRF), in addressing the needs of small-scale and Indigenous fishers. …

The New Frontier For Bankruptcy: Crypto, Lindy Lofton Jan 2024

The New Frontier For Bankruptcy: Crypto, Lindy Lofton

Cardozo Arts & Entertainment Law Journal

The note examines the regulatory challenges posed by the rise of cryptocurrency platforms like Celsius and FTX, which have faced significant financial difficulties and bankruptcy. These platforms operate similarly to traditional banks and brokerages but lack the same regulatory oversight, leaving customers vulnerable without protections like FDIC insurance. The note argues that adopting legislation akin to the Banking Act of 1933 or the Securities Investor Protection Act (SIPA) could provide necessary safeguards, such as insurance mechanisms similar to FDIC or SIPC. However, the decentralized nature of cryptocurrency and opposition from the crypto community pose challenges to implementing such regulations. The …

Implementation Of An Evidence-Based Bundle To Educate Nurses In The Care Of Adult Post-Transplant Diabetes Mellitus Patients, Christine Slaughter

DNP Projects

Background: After solid organ transplantation, between 10-40% of patients develop post-transplant diabetes mellitus (PTDM) due to the immunosuppression regimen, infection, stress response and pain. Hyperglycemia events are common and managing glycemic targets is critical to decrease the likelihood of graft failure and mortality.

Purpose: To determine the impact of an evidenced-based bundle education strategy on the perceived confidence/knowledge of nurses and on their documentation compliance in the care of adult solid organ post-transplant diabetes mellitus patients.

Methods: A single group, pretest-posttest design was implemented to evaluate the effectiveness of the electronic educational program on the nurses perceived confidence/knowledge regarding glycemic …

Improving Nutrition Screening Practice In The Hospitalized Heart Failure Patient Population, Amanda J. Bourgeois Jan 2024

Improving Nutrition Screening Practice In The Hospitalized Heart Failure Patient Population, Amanda J. Bourgeois

DNP Projects

Background: Heart Failure is a disease known to affect nearly 6.5 million adults in the United States. Characterized by recurrent hospitalizations, heart failure significantly contributes to morbidity, mortality, and healthcare costs in the United States and worldwide. Because malnutrition is prevalent in the heart failure population, healthcare providers must perform nutritional assessments on admission to intervene in the case of malnutrition, prevent deterioration, and improve patient prognosis. Without intervention and early identification of malnutrition, heart failure hospitalizations will remain a significant problem.

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effect of an evidence-based educational program for cardiac …

Improving Knowledge, Confidence, And Competency Among Icu Nurses Concerning The Benefits Of Using The Uk Ventilator Separation Protocol, Brittany Monroe Jan 2024

Improving Knowledge, Confidence, And Competency Among Icu Nurses Concerning The Benefits Of Using The Uk Ventilator Separation Protocol, Brittany Monroe

DNP Projects

Background: The trauma intensive care unit (ICU) at University of Kentucky (UK) Healthcare uses a ventilator separation protocol which provides specific guidelines on the successful weaning of patients from mechanical ventilation. However, many of the nurses are not aware of this protocol as formal education is not included in their orientation or training. This lack of knowledge can lead to risks such as increased patient morbidity, mortality, ICU length of stay, and healthcare-related costs. Research shows that using structured mechanical ventilator weaning tools in the ICU can shorten the duration of mechanical ventilation, which in turn, lowers these associated risks. …

The Effects Of An Educational Intervention On Nursing Knowledge Of Post-Operative Care Of Patients After Minimally Invasive Esophagectomy Surgery, Kelli Curry

DNP Projects

Abstract

Background: Minimally invasive esophagectomy surgery is commonly performed by thoracic surgeons on patients with esophageal cancer. The post-operative care of these patients is meticulous and follows a protocol developed by the thoracic surgeons at the University of Kentucky. At UK Chandler Medical Center, concerns have been raised regarding nurses’ lack of education of the protocol, and therefore decreased implementation. Increasing nursing knowledge pertaining to this protocol by performing educational in-services periodically and standardizing and implementing formal education as part of nursing orientation will decrease the knowledge gap and improve patient outcomes and increase utilization of the post-operative protocol.

Evaluation Of Nutritional Guidance From Providers For Patients With Type 2 Diabetes In A Primary Care Setting, Whitney Rice

DNP Projects

Background: Adherence to diet is a challenging part of managing type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Guidelines recommend including a registered dietician and/or a diabetes educator. While this is the gold standard, there are barriers to implementation in primary care. The Starting the Conversation (STC) diet recall tool can aid primary care providers (PCPs) in providing brief nutrition counseling for patients with T2DM. Purpose: To evaluate the perceptions and practices of PCPs regarding dietary education and documentation for patients with T2DM after provider education and initiation of the STC tool. Methods: This was a quality improvement project using a quasi-experimental pretest …

An Educational Intervention To Improve Neonatal Icu Nurses’ Breastfeeding Support Knowledge, Self-Efficacy, And Breastfeeding Rates At Discharge, Sarah Money Jan 2024

An Educational Intervention To Improve Neonatal Icu Nurses’ Breastfeeding Support Knowledge, Self-Efficacy, And Breastfeeding Rates At Discharge, Sarah Money

DNP Projects

Background: The benefits of breastfeeding for both mother and baby are known. It is recommended that all infants be exclusively breastfed until six months (Meek & Noble, 2022; North et al., 2021). Despite this, breastfeeding rates remain low, especially in medically fragile infants requiring care in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) (Rollins et al., 2016). Receipt of evidence-based breastfeeding support by healthcare providers has been shown to improve breastfeeding success; however, many healthcare providers report not being comfortable or knowledgeable enough to offer support consistently (Mulcahy et al., 2022; Rollins et al., 2016).

The objective of the alfalfa survey was to determine the role of soil fertility in the alfalfa yield plateau. Soil samples at depths of 10, 15, and 30 cm and tissue samples were collected from 114 alfalfa stands across Kentucky and surrounding states. Results indicate that soil fertility is likely contributing but not driving the alfalfa yield plateau. The main objective of the polyhalite incubation study is to determine if POLY4 was soluble enough to support potassium (K) and sulfur (S) for plant growth. The design of the study included four fertilizer treatments, three soil types, and four incubation times. …

Identifying Physiological, Morphological, And Genetic Drivers Of Key Intermediary Phenotypic Traits Associated With Stalk Lodging Resistance Within Genetically Diverse Maize Germplasm And Sorghum, Norbert Bokros Jan 2024

Identifying Physiological, Morphological, And Genetic Drivers Of Key Intermediary Phenotypic Traits Associated With Stalk Lodging Resistance Within Genetically Diverse Maize Germplasm And Sorghum, Norbert Bokros

Theses and Dissertations--Plant and Soil Sciences

Maize stalk lodging reduces grain yields due to the permanent breakage or deformation of stalk tissue before grain harvest. To reveal new insights into the complex problem of maize stalk lodging, this dissertation will examine three primary objectives. First, the direct, diurnal influence of turgor pressure will be shown to have only marginal effects on stalk bending strength, a key trait associated with stalk lodging resistance. Up to a dozen individual stalks, grown to physiological maturity within the same field, were tested using a DARLING testing device. In parallel, stalk turgor status as measured by leaf water potential and turgor …
