Expecting Better When You’Re Expecting: Empowering Mothers Through Occupational Therapy, Ann K. Landreville
Expecting Better When You’Re Expecting: Empowering Mothers Through Occupational Therapy, Ann K. Landreville
Occupational Therapy Capstones
The maternal health crisis of the United States presents an opportunity to improve the level of care provided to the maternal population. A new standard of care must be established, going beyond decreasing maternal mortality and morbidity rates, but instead working to promote the health and well-being of mothers. While many well-recognized health professionals currently play a role on the interdisciplinary care team for postpartum mothers, occupational therapists are emerging in this field, proving they have a vital role in providing services that addresses the current gap in care. Many professions largely address physical health; occupational therapists have a holistic …

Promoting Independence In An Existing Cancer Survivorship Program: Adaptive Equipment And Intimacy & Sexuality, Bailee Scheer
Occupational Therapy Capstones
Purpose: The purpose of this project was to create educational materials for cancer survivors and their caregivers/families on the topics of adaptive equipment and intimacy/sexuality. A person is considered a cancer survivor at any point after receiving a cancer diagnosis, regardless of what stage they are at in their course of treatment (American Cancer Society, 2024). The rate of cancer survivors within the United States has grown drastically over the past several years, due to advances in treatment and early detection (Cronin et al., 2022). Cancer survivors experience many changing side effects during and after treatment that influence the way …
An Interdisciplinary Approach To Fall Prevention In Rural Health, Casidi Pullar
An Interdisciplinary Approach To Fall Prevention In Rural Health, Casidi Pullar
Occupational Therapy Capstones
Background: Hospital-acquired falls can lead to severe injuries and complications, posing significant challenges for patient safety and the healthcare facility (Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, 2023). Healthcare workers in rural, Critical Access Hospitals often handle a wide range of responsibilities due to the smaller staff size, limited resources, and difficulty retaining or recruiting staff due to the remote location, typically resulting in fall prevention being less prioritized (Abelsen et al., 2020; Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, 2023). Addressing patient safety and fall prevention strategies is an organizational and systemic challenge that requires evidence-based education and an interdisciplinary team …

Exploring Postpartum Care: A Guide For Mothers, Amber Joy Matlock
Occupational Therapy Capstones
Title: Exploring Postpartum Care: A Guide for Mothers
Background: Thousands of babies are born in hospitals each year. Before being discharged home from the hospital, mothers receive education from interprofessional team members about their infant’s care, but there is a lack of information and education provided to mothers about their care and postpartum recovery. Without having adequate information on a mother’s recovery, there is an increased risk for poor maternal outcomes to occur during the postpartum journey. Maternal health is an emerging practice area for occupational therapy practitioners; the population is within the scope of practice for the profession. Currently, …

A First Amendment Failure: Surrendering To Science Misinformation For Bioengineered Foods, Casey J. Nelson
A First Amendment Failure: Surrendering To Science Misinformation For Bioengineered Foods, Casey J. Nelson
University of Colorado Law Review
Government-compelled commercial disclosures are not unfamiliar to consumers. Common labels include nutrition facts and ingredient information. The National Bioengineered Food Disclosure Standard, which took full force at the start of 2022, is of a different nature. The new law requires all manufacturers, all importers, and certain retailers of bioengineered foods to disclose on the food’s packaging that it has been produced with bioengineering technology. Even so, a large swath of the public is ignorant of “bioengineering’s” true meaning and bioengineering technology’s true quality. The politically charged and fact-lacking debate on bioengineered foods renders this standard an impermissible coercion of speech …
Lexisnexis’S Contract With Ice As Unjust Enrichment, Lizzie Bird
Lexisnexis’S Contract With Ice As Unjust Enrichment, Lizzie Bird
University of Colorado Law Review
For $22.1 million, LexisNexis is currently helping Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) surveil, detain, and deport noncitizens. Like other data brokers, LexisNexis’s role in the collection and sale of personal information has largely been ignored by regulators, judges, and the public. A recent lawsuit against LexisNexis in Illinois includes, among other claims, a claim of unjust enrichment. This often misunderstood and unpopular claim has a complex history which presents both a barrier to relief and an opportunity for advocates to push courts to clarify the doctrine. This Note examines the history of the theory of unjust enrichment, surveys its recent …

Deciphering A Non-Meal: Pantawid-Gutom And The Everyday Negotiation Of Hunger In The Philippines, Gideon Lasco, Jhaki Mendoza
Development Studies Faculty Publications
Pantawid-gutom literally means “to bridge hunger” and refers to a range of food and non-food products and practices in the Philippines that allow people to survive in between “serious meals.” What does its existence as a liminal category between food/non-food or serious/non-serious meal signify, particularly for millions of Filipino families who regularly experience hunger? Drawing on fieldwork in low-income urban communities on Luzon Island, and from a review of the scholarly and popular literature, we use local conceptions of pantawid-gutom—hitherto overlooked in the scholarship—as a starting point for exploring the lived reality of food insecurity in the country. The efficacy …

Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications
Substituted imidazolidinetriones (IZTs) have been identified as potent inhibitors of pyruvate carboxylase (PC) through an in silico screening approach. Alkyl 2-(2,4,5-trioxo-3-substituted imidazolidin-1-yl)acetates (6i–6r) are the most potent of the series, with IC50 values between 3 and 12 μM, and several IZTs demonstrate high passive permeability across an artificial membrane. IZTs are mixed-type inhibitors with respect to pyruvate and noncompetitive with respect to ATP. This class of inhibitors appears to be selective for PC. Inhibitors in the IZT series do not inhibit the metalloenzymes human carbonic anhydrase II and matrix metalloprotease-12, and they do not inhibit the related biotin-dependent enzyme, guanidine …
Advancing Explainability In Multi-Label Classification For Tomato Disease Detection Using Machine Learning Interpretability Techniques, Md. Nurullah
Theses and Dissertations
Plant diseases pose a significant threat to global food security, affecting crop yield, quality, and overall agricultural productivity. Traditionally, diagnosing plant diseases has relied on timeconsuming visual inspections by experts, which can often lead to errors. With the rapid growth of technology, machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI) have opened new possibilities for automating this process. One of the most promising technologies for plant disease diagnosis is Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs), which have proven effective in image classification tasks. Plant leaves, often exhibiting symptoms such as discoloration and irregular textures, serve as key indicators for disease detection. By processing …

Health-Related Social Needs Before And After Critical Illness Among Medicare Beneficiaries, Tamar A. Kaminski
Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library
Health-Related Social Needs (HRSNs), such as financial strain, food insecurity, social isolation, and transportation disadvantage, are unmet social needs associated with poor health outcomes and increased healthcare utilization. In qualitative work, survivors of the intensive care unit (ICU) report financial strain; however, little is known about food insecurity, social isolation, and transportation disadvantage after critical illness. The objectives of this study were twofold: (1) to ascertain changes in three HRSNs—food insecurity, social isolation, and transportation disadvantage—from the year before critical illness to the year following discharge among older adult survivors of critical illness, and (2) to evaluate demographic, pre-admission, and …
Prevalence Of Metabolic Comorbidities And Viral Infections In Monoclonal Gammopathy, Mansen Yu
Prevalence Of Metabolic Comorbidities And Viral Infections In Monoclonal Gammopathy, Mansen Yu
Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library
Monoclonal gammopathy (MG) encompasses a spectrum of related diseases, with monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance (MGUS) being the most prevalent, serving as a precursor of smoldering and clinical multiple myeloma. While the association between gammopathies, metabolic conditions and antigenic stimulation has long been recognized, the precise mechanism remains unclear. Prior research has shown that a subset of MGUS and MM is driven by chronic antigenic stimulation of B cells by endogenous lipids and exogenous microbial antigens. The aim of this study is to assess the prevalence of metabolic comorbidities and viral infections in a large population with monoclonal gammopathy, providing …

Preoperative Psychosocial Risk Burden Among Patients Undergoing Major Thoracic And Abdominal Surgery, Emily Park
Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library
Objective: Patient-related, biological risk factors such as age, diabetes, and smoking are associated with worse outcomes and increased postoperative complications rates in patients. However, not much is known about the effects of psychosocial risk factors on surgical outcomes. This study aimed to characterize the psychosocial risk burden in patients undergoing major surgery for malignant and benign conditions. Methods: A prospective, comprehensive psychosocial risk assessment of adult patients undergoing major thoracic or abdominal surgery within the Yale New Haven Health system was conducted from July 2023 to December 2023. The study was delivered over telephone, and was comprised of validated survey …
