Nappy, Loc’D Or Straight, It Still Gets Hate: A Collaborative Autoethnography Examining Black Hair In K-12 Education And Beyond, Maiya Turner, Janae Alexander-Bady, Virginia Redwine Johnson, Salandra Grice, Tyra Montour
Journal of Multicultural Affairs
The purpose of this study is to examine the impact that Black hair discrimination has on Black girls in K-12 educational settings. Black hair has long been tied to Black girls and women’s cultural identities. However, Black girls often fall victim to discrimination based on their hair texture and style, which can often impact their relationship with their hair through adulthood. Utilizing collaborative autoethnography, we provide our hair experiences during our K-12 educational experiences and how this has impacted our current relationships with our hair. Additionally, within the findings, we identify three themes common among our experiences: dress codes as …
Estha And Trans Identity In The God Of Small Things, Clara Reid
Estha And Trans Identity In The God Of Small Things, Clara Reid
Critical Humanities
Gender relationships in The God of Small Things by Arundhati Roy change over the course of the book. In many ways, gender and caste are inseparable from one another in how they interact; it is Estha who bridges the gap between both. Whether consciously or subconsciously, he engages in this transgressive behavior in order to become his sister Rahel. This essay positions Estha as a trans woman longing for a becoming, and it is through his successful pursuit of Rahel in both a queer and psychoanalytic sense that he becomes a woman. This pursuit manifests through transgressive behavior, putting him …

Damn The Dams: Framing ‘Schizophrenic’ Discourses Of The Hindu Right, Nandita Ghosh
Critical Humanities
This article examines the concept of schizophrenia as a cultural metaphor in order to analyze the Hindu Right’s contradictory language-framing politics within the public domain, particularly in relation to building mega dams on rivers Narmada and Bhagirathi. In so doing, it intends to examine the nature of the public domain itself that enables such framing politics within the context of late 20th-early-21st-century global capital. Language battles in the public domain have intensified during this period, especially through various forms of digital media. In India, the various groups that form the Hindu Right have often mixed the …

Farrowing Performance And Piglet Characteristics Of Highly Prolific Sows In A Tropical Environment, Yosua Kristian Adi, Roy N. Kirkwood, Padet Tummaruk
The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine
The swine industry has witnessed a remarkable increase in average litter size in recent decades, driven by genetic advancements and breeding programs aimed at enhancing prolificacy. This rise in hyperprolificacy has presented both opportunities and challenges, particularly in tropical environments where factors such as ambient temperature and humidity can influence reproductive performance. This review synthesizes current knowledge on farrowing performance and piglet characteristics of highly prolific sows in tropical settings. Studies have reported a consistent increase in litter size globally, leading to challenges in farrowing management and piglet survival. Factors such as elevated ambient temperatures and extended farrowing durations have …

System And Method To Authorize A Payment Transaction Using A Digital Glove, Sri Sai Krishna Kiran Atmuri
Defensive Publications Series
The present disclosure relates to a system and method to authorize a payment transaction using a digital glove. The present disclosure suggests tapping a cardholder’s digital glove on a merchant payment system without entering a Personal Identification Number (PIN) to initiate a payment transaction. The merchant payment system transmits the payment transaction data to an issuer system through a network via an acquirer server for authorization. Upon notification, the cardholder enters the PIN by performing a sequence of pinches between a thumb finger distal phalange and the other finger phalanges of the digital glove. Thereafter, encrypt the chronological order of …

Introduction: Suicide among adolescents and youth is such a serious issue that immediate, appropriate interventions are needed to reduce rates of suicide ideation and suicide mortality. The increasing rate of suicide among this population profoundly affects families, friends, and the community. Identifying and implementing appropriate interventions in schools could identify individuals who are suffering from mental illness and support suicide prevention.
Aim: The purpose of this integrative literature review was to examine the literature on suicide prevention interventions for young adolescents and teenagers aged 12-17 years old and identify the best, evidence-based practices for the school setting. The aim …
Type Of Orientation And Differences In Role Transition, Unit Support, Job Satisfaction And Retention Among New Graduate Nurses, Kimber Lee Zolnier
Type Of Orientation And Differences In Role Transition, Unit Support, Job Satisfaction And Retention Among New Graduate Nurses, Kimber Lee Zolnier
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Many new graduate nurses leave the nursing profession during the first year of practice due to inadequate orientation and lack of support. Successful transition to practice is often hindered as new graduate nurses may be assigned to more than one clinical unit and receive feedback from multiple preceptors, leading to frustration and lack of confidence when feedback is inconsistent. The purpose of this quantitative cross-sectional study, guided by the Dreyfus model of skill acquisition and Benner’s novice to expert theory, was to determine if there is a difference among new graduate nurses’ experiences with role transition, job satisfaction, retention, and …

Lack Of Women In Federal Level Politics In The United States, Ellie E. Romans Draper
Journal of Nonprofit Innovation
This paper explores the enduring underrepresentation of women in U.S. federal politics, analyzing historical exclusions and contemporary challenges. It identifies that, despite women constituting 50.5% of the population, they held only 28% of Congressional seats in 2023. The study assesses barriers such as the scarcity of female role models, inadequate support, and entrenched societal expectations that discourage political participation. Key findings suggest that these factors not only restrict women's entry and progression in politics but also affect democratic integrity and policy inclusivity. It highlights the organization She Should Run, which encourages women from diverse backgrounds to pursue political office, providing …
Reviving The Genocide Convention’S Preventive Purpose, Yonah Diamond, John Packer
Reviving The Genocide Convention’S Preventive Purpose, Yonah Diamond, John Packer
Genocide Studies and Prevention: An International Journal
The contemporary discourse on genocide is dominated by international criminal law, designed to punish individuals after the fact. This article proposes a legal framework derived from Public International Law and the Genocide Convention’s original purpose to prevent genocide. We clarify the conceptual and practical differences between individual criminal responsibility for the crime of genocide and State responsibility for breaches of the Genocide Convention, including distinct standards of proof and indicia of intent. We propose correctives to prevailing errors. We argue for a more appropriate and flexible standard of proof for State breaches of the Genocide Convention. We further outline a …
Rethinking The Application Of Formal And Informal Justice Responses To Conflict Related Sexual Violence In Uganda, Josephine Ndagire
Rethinking The Application Of Formal And Informal Justice Responses To Conflict Related Sexual Violence In Uganda, Josephine Ndagire
Genocide Studies and Prevention: An International Journal
Nearly sixteen (16) years since the "Agreement on Cessation of Hostilities Between the Government of the Republic of Uganda and Lord’s Resistance Army/Movement" (Juba Peace Agreement), accountability mechanisms envisaged therein have hardly provided meaningful redress, if at all, to victims of conflict-related sexual violence (CRSV). The peace negotiations took place shortly after the ICC issued arrest warrants for top commanders of the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) who insisted on being tried at home. In a bid to balance the demands of peace and justice, a local accountability mechanism was agreed. The mechanism would work parallel to traditional justice mechanisms in …
“A Disturbing Portent Of Future Harm”? Attacks On Cultural Heritage, Atrocity Crimes, And The Problem Of Prevention, Matthew S. Weinert
“A Disturbing Portent Of Future Harm”? Attacks On Cultural Heritage, Atrocity Crimes, And The Problem Of Prevention, Matthew S. Weinert
Genocide Studies and Prevention: An International Journal
Preventing atrocities has garnered significant scholarly and practitioner attention. In 2014, the UN Office of Genocide Prevention issued a Framework of Analysis of Atrocity Crimes listing 14 risk factors and 143 indicators to support risk analysis and early action. Cognizant that conflicts regularly include deliberate attacks on cultural heritage, the Framework identifies fourteen indicators that pertain to culture and cultural heritage. Five years after the Framework’s release, Simon Adams decried the international community’s ineffectiveness at translating early warning into practical action with respect to cultural heritage. Instead of focusing on lack of political will or obstructionism—an obstructionism that led to …

Assembling Pieces Of Accountability For The Srebrenica Genocide, Annick Pijnenburg, Nataša Nedeski
Assembling Pieces Of Accountability For The Srebrenica Genocide, Annick Pijnenburg, Nataša Nedeski
Genocide Studies and Prevention: An International Journal
The Srebrenica genocide has been the subject of multiple legal proceedings against various actors before different courts, at both the national and international level. Amongst others, the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia has sentenced various individual perpetrators, the International Court of Justice has ruled on the responsibility of the Serbian state, and Dutch courts have been asked to rule on the liability of the Dutch state and the United Nations. This raises the following question: to what extent have multiple adjudicatory mechanisms across legal regimes managed to deliver accountability for the Srebrenica genocide and what are the remaining …
If Only Justice Could Heal Or Make Whole: Hard Lessons From Rwanda’S Legal Responses To Genocide And Mass Atrocity, Gerald Gahima
If Only Justice Could Heal Or Make Whole: Hard Lessons From Rwanda’S Legal Responses To Genocide And Mass Atrocity, Gerald Gahima
Genocide Studies and Prevention: An International Journal
My reflections on the limits of legal responses in Rwanda stem from both academic and lived experience. I served as Rwanda’s Deputy Minister of Justice (1996–1999), Prosecutor General (1999–2003), and Deputy Chief Justice (2003–2004) during the period after the genocide. In those roles, I had access to a large volume of information drawn from policy- making roles, case files of members of my staff, as well as my own fieldwork relating to the suffering of victims of the genocide. While I obviously believe that justice for those crimes is not in vain, my work with survivors left me with an …

Global Human Rights Sanctions: How Can They Contribute To Addressing Mass Atrocities?, Yifan Jia
Genocide Studies and Prevention: An International Journal
Global Human Rights Sanctions (GHRS) have been used in over 30 countries as a mechanism for imposing unilateral human rights sanctions on individual perpetrators. Despite the hundreds of specific sanctions that have been imposed globally, there remains a lack of understanding about how these measures function on gross human rights violations. This article seeks to explore how GHRS, as an emerging human rights mechanism, contributes to addressing mass atrocities. I categorize the functions of GHRS into two phases: post-atrocity and pre-atrocity. In the post-atrocity phase, I identify three primary objectives asserted by sanctioning states: punishing perpetrators, promoting behavioral change, and …

Resisting Ableism In Research Design, Gipsy Hosking
The Qualitative Report
This paper explores how ableist assumptions can unintentionally create barriers to participation in research by those of non-normative bodies or minds. In traditional epistemology, bodies are considered “universal” rather than “specific,” and the universal body is coded as fully able-bodied and independent with brain and body adhering to normative standards of the White heterosexual English-speaking male. In this article, I present a story of “enabling participation” for those of diverse body capacity in my work with young women living with chronic illness.[1]Specifically, I explore the accommodations and adaptions I made to my research design to account for the …

Narrative Engineering: Tools, Computational Structure, And Impact Of Stories, Michael A. Debuse
Theses and Dissertations
Computational Linguistics has a long history of applying mathematics to the grammatical and syntactic structure of language; however, applying math to the more complex aspects of language, such as narrative, plot, scenes, character relations, causation, etc. remains a difficult topic. The goal of my research is to bridge the narrative humanities with mathematics, to computationally grasp at these difficult topic, and help develop the field of Narrative Engineering. I view narrative and story with the same mathematical scrutiny as other engineering fields, to take the creativity and fluidity of story and encode it in mathematical representations that have meaning beyond …

Physics-Informed Heterogeneous Spatiotemporal Graph Neural Network For Reservoir Simulation, Ahmed A.M.A. Abdullah
Physics-Informed Heterogeneous Spatiotemporal Graph Neural Network For Reservoir Simulation, Ahmed A.M.A. Abdullah
LSU Master's Theses
Reservoir simulation is the state-of-the-art method for predicting the flow of petroleum reservoir fluids in porous media. It provides an accurate and unbiased prediction of the performance of petroleum reservoirs under different operating conditions. Despite its advantages, reservoir simulation is computationally expensive; with typical full-field simulation models running for several hours. This limitation is worsened when simulating reservoirs with several equations for each cell, such as multiphysics or compositional reservoir simulation. The goal of this research is to provide a fast and accurate spatiotemporal machine-learning model that incorporates discretized governing mass balance equations for training. To achieve this, we propose …
