Enhanced Resolution Method For Electromagnetic Vortex Imaging Based On Electromagnetic Information Theory, Da Liu, Hongyin Shi, Ting Yang, Zhijun Qiao

School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications

The electromagnetic vortex imaging possesses independent orbital angular momentum with orthogonal degrees of freedom (DoF), which implies the existence of enhanced information capacity. However, high-mode orbital angular momentum (OAM) beams have stringent generation conditions and inefficient information carrying capacity, which results in limited resolution. This paper proposes a method to combine the electromagnetic information theory (EIT) with the traditional electromagnetic vortex imaging technique, which allows one may obtain more target azimuth information. The DoF, as the main component of information, has been increased to achieve higher azimuth resolution. First, the propagation and imaging model for the electromagnetic vortex with statistical …

Hypermodern Affect, Political Orientation, And Conspiracy Theory Ideation In The Age Of Postmodernity, Rachel L. Anderson Jan 2024

Hypermodern Affect, Political Orientation, And Conspiracy Theory Ideation In The Age Of Postmodernity, Rachel L. Anderson

Scripps Senior Theses

Recent scholarly undertakings have aimed to demystify an increasingly salient issue that threatens to disrupt cultural, political, and social domains: conspiracy theory ideation. Underpinning injurious right-wing political coalitions, anti-vaccination campaigns, out-group derogation, and, in drastic circumstances, instances of genocide, conspiracy theory informs myriad anthropogenic movements that jeopardize pillars of democracy and scientific reasoning. Intending to reveal the psychological predictors of conspiracy ideation, the present study will examine the utility of individual perceptions of societal marginalization, feelings of loneliness, belongingness, and authoritarianism in predicting the endorsement of conspiracy theory ideology among rural populations via a cross-sectional online survey and subsequent hierarchical …

Segment Anything: A Review, Firas Hazzaa, Innocent Udoidiong, Akram Qashou, Sufian Yousef

Mesopotamian Journal of Computer Science

Segment Anything (SA) is a state-of-the art method for universal object segmentation, which does not need task-specific training. Herein, we emphasize that SA can overcome the limitations of traditional segmentation frameworks based on requiring extensive manually annotated datasets and predefined architectures, as extensively documented in this review. SB supercharges performance and reduces cost by combining Mutual Information learning with an Efficient Transformer architecture, benefiting from a substantially larger pool of in-the-wild data. In this paper we review SA and its specific key innovations generality, resource boundedness, and scalability to large datasets. We also face obstacles such as data biases, computational …

Bridging The Gap: Determinants Of Consumers' Willingness To Pay For Environmentally Friendly Packages Of Leafy Greens, Carissa Dieli, Anushree Priyadarshini, Robert Ludgate, Lorraine Foley

Articles

Government and corporate policies have mandated a reduction in plastic packaging to combat issues of waste and climate change. This move towards sustainable packaging alternatives in the fresh food sector will increase costs for consumers. Much of the present research finds consumers are willing to pay more for sustainability, but their willingness to pay (WTP) does not align with real-world purchases, representing an attitude–behaviour gap. To combat this gap, it is posited that consumers' current purchasing- and sustainability-related behaviours will meaningfully correlate with their WTP and bridge the attitude–behaviour gap. This research used an online survey (n = 476) to …

Speculative Practicescapes Of Learning Design And Dreaming, Eamon Costello, Jason K. Mcdonald, F. Macgilchrist, P. Jandrić, H. Carbonel, S. Crighton, A. Buch, M. A. Peters

Faculty Publications

This article addresses a serious issue that besets learning design: its over-reliance on frameworks that promise particular outcomes for individual learners that accord with pre-defined metrics. This is partly a function of the nature of learning design and devel- opment itself which is commonly seen as outcome-oriented activity that should ben- efit individual learners in specific ways. An alternative approach is adopted here which calls attention to other happenings at the heart of education, including positive emo- tions we experience that are made known through less measurable and more fleeting points of reference. Hence, we draw on sources such as …

Reaching A 'Breaking Point' - Women’S Experiences Of Caring In Ireland During Covid-19, Cliona Loughnane, Mary Hayes

Irish Journal of Applied Social Studies

The inequitable division of care between women and men has been central to the perpetuation of gender inequalities in Ireland and internationally. COVID-19 brought new visibility to the caring needs of society and underlined the need for personal and political structures and supports which account for care. During Ireland’s first lockdown, many women were caring for their families and homes, working in paid employment, providing home-schooling and supporting loved ones outside the home. In May 2020, the Women’s Experiences of Caring during COVID-19 online survey sought to capture the experiences of women providing informal, unpaid care during the pandemic. 85% …

This study adds to the emerging body of research showing the importance of internal audit to improve corporate governance and firm performance. Specifically, we test how the market reacts to the announcement of a turnover to the head of internal audit (i.e., the chief audit executive (CAE)). We find negative cumulative abnormal returns in the days surrounding the announcement of a CAE turnover and that the market holds a relatively negative perception of CAE turnover regardless of the reasons for the turnover event. We then study two reasons for why the market would react negatively to the CAE turnover and …

We examine reporting honesty across two tasks, various measures, and various populations, that are commonly used in existing research. In our initial experiment, participants misreported more in a dice rolling task when performing it in a VR setting than in a non-VR setting. However, in a second and third experiment attempting to replicate and extend our …

Traditional Investment Research And Social Networks: Evidence From Facebook Connections, Travis Dyer, Gerrit Köchling, Peter Limbach Jan 2024

Traditional Investment Research And Social Networks: Evidence From Facebook Connections, Travis Dyer, Gerrit Köchling, Peter Limbach

Faculty Publications

We show that investors acquire more public information about firms to which they are more socially proximate. On average, a standard deviation increase in the Social Connectedness Index (Bailey et al., 2018) between a firm’s headquarter county and a searcher county is associated with 30% more EDGAR filing downloads from the searcher county. The effect of social proximity on traditional investment research is distinct from the effect of geographic proximity. We find similar results studying headquarter relocations, investor-level data, and EDGAR downloads from European regions, for which physical distance should be irrelevant. Social proximity matters more during times of high …
