The Exclusion Of Black Girls: A Quantitative Study, Ursula Moorer

Selected Full Text Dissertations, 2011-

Existing research consistently indicates that Black girls are assigned disproportionately exclusionary disciplinary consequences such as, suspension and expulsion rates, surpassing their White counterparts and Black boys. According to the Report to Congressional Requesters, (United States Governmental Accountability Office, 2018), exclusionary discipline is any type of removal from a student’s normal educational setting. This quantitative correlational study examined the relationship between the racial demographics within a school's student and personnel populations and occurrences of suspensions faced by Black female students in grades 9 through 12. Archival data were used from the New York State Education Department (NYSED) website. NYSED data are …

The Relationship Between Familiarity And Stigma Associated With Schizophrenia, Bipolar Disorder, And Autism In Ireland: A Pilot Study, April Hargreaves, Gerard Loughnane, Gabriela Grasso, David Mothersill

Irish Journal of Applied Social Studies

The relationship between familiarity with mental health conditions and mental health stigma is complex, with mixed findings reported in the literature and little research conducted in Ireland to date. This pilot study examined knowledge, attitudes, and behaviours towards schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and autism in Ireland, between individuals personally familiar with these conditions (by having a diagnosis themselves, or a loved one having a diagnosis) and individuals unfamiliar with these conditions. The study used a correlational, cross-sectional design, recruiting 307 adults in Ireland to complete a survey examining knowledge, attitudes, and behaviours towards schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and autism. To examine the …

“I Know A Lot Of People Just Gave Up And Died, Out Of Loneliness”: Family Members Experiences Of Covid-19 Visitation Restrictions In Irish Nursing Homes, Emily Egan, Sarah Robinson, Erin Nic An Bhaird, Graham Gillespie

Irish Journal of Applied Social Studies

COVID-19 has had a disproportionate impact on older adults, particularly those living in nursing homes (NH) globally and in Ireland, the site of our study. Whilst NH residents were at increased risk of serious illness from the virus, visitation bans and restrictions also impacted residents' quality of life. Family members' (FMs) essential caring role was recognised in contexts like the Netherlands, parts of the United States and Ontario, Canada, but were not in Ireland. The current study explored the experiences of FMs of residents who experienced visitation bans during the first four waves of the COVID-19 pandemic in Ireland. Eight …

Happy To Zoom: A New Frontier In Online Delivery Of Day-Care For Older People During Covid-19, Suzanne C. Smith Msc, Holly O'Brien, Darragh Mccashin Phd

Irish Journal of Applied Social Studies

From early in the COVID-19 pandemic, community day-care centres sought to find ways to deliver services remotely using digital tools, but older people are often presumed resistant to using digital technologies. This study sought to examine the delivery of community day-care services at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic and to identify the willingness of older service users to participate in day-care activities remotely while in-person services were unavailable. Community day-care services are essential to ensuring social participation and overall wellbeing for many older people who remain living at home. On March 16th, 2020, like many other services, …

Examining How Non-Antifungal Medications Impact Host-Fungal Interactions, Parker Ryan Reitler Jan 2024

Examining How Non-Antifungal Medications Impact Host-Fungal Interactions, Parker Ryan Reitler

Theses and Dissertations (ETD)

Invasive fungal infections (IFIs) are estimated to kill 1.5 million people each year with mortality rates remaining high (around 30-70%), despite the availability of three major classes of antifungal drugs. Furthermore, millions more suffer debilitating infections of the mucosal membranes or destructive subcutaneous mycoses. One of the most common IFIs is invasive candidiasis, mostly commonly caused by Candida albicans infections, with mortality rates of approximately 30%. In addition, the population of susceptible individuals and the incidences of both mucosal and systemic mycoses continue to rise due to the widespread use of broad-spectrum antibacterial agents, cancer chemotherapies, and the immune suppressive …

Biomechanical Outcomes Of Distinct Tka Surgical Alignments And Implant Designs, Alexis Kathleen Nelson-Tranum Jan 2024

Biomechanical Outcomes Of Distinct Tka Surgical Alignments And Implant Designs, Alexis Kathleen Nelson-Tranum

Theses and Dissertations (ETD)

Introduction. Total knee arthroplasty (TKA) has advanced over the past two decades from traditional post-operative neutral alignment methods with an overall goal of implant longevity to ones that are more personalized to better replicate individual native knee kinematics. Personalizing TKA knee kinematics to better replicate a patient’s native knee kinematics has evolved in response to a reported 20% dissatisfaction by patients with their TKA. These personalization advancements include innovations in surgical alignment techniques include the kinematic alignment (KA) and joint line obliquity (JLO) restoration, in contrast to the mechanical alignment (MA) technique that places everyone into the same mold. Additionally, …

Ftsk Regulates The Assembly Of The Division Machinery In The Ftsz-Less Chlamydia Trachomatis, Mckenna Katherine Harpring Jan 2024

Ftsk Regulates The Assembly Of The Division Machinery In The Ftsz-Less Chlamydia Trachomatis, Mckenna Katherine Harpring

Theses and Dissertations (ETD)

In evolving to obligate intracellular dependence, Chlamydia trachomatis serovar L2 (Ct), has eliminated several gene products essential for cell division in most other bacteria, including FtsZ, the central coordinator of divisome assembly. In the absence of FtsZ, we show that divisome assembly in Ct is initiated by FtsK, a chromosomal translocase. Chlamydial FtsK forms discrete foci at the septum and at the base of the progenitor mother cell, and our data indicate that FtsK foci at the base of the mother cell mark the location of nascent divisome complexes that form at the site where a daughter cell will emerge …

Optical Absorption Of Defects In Aluminum Nitride, Mackenzie Siford Jan 2024

For The Love Of The Game: Examining The Legality Of Unofficial Fan Video Game Remakes, Madeleine Higgs Jan 2024

For The Love Of The Game: Examining The Legality Of Unofficial Fan Video Game Remakes, Madeleine Higgs

Cardozo Arts & Entertainment Law Journal

The note explores the legal challenges faced by creators of fan remakes of delisted video games under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) and proposes potential solutions to address these issues. It argues that expanding exemptions for such works and adopting a statutory licensing regime could provide a legal framework that balances the rights of copyright holders with the creative interests of fan creators. The analysis emphasizes the need for reforms to prevent overly broad enforcement of copyright protections and to incentivize fair use considerations.

Is Chinese Law Well-Prepared For Al Songs?: A Note Of Caution On The Over-Expansion Of Personality Rights, Yang Chen

Cardozo Arts & Entertainment Law Journal

Recently, artificial intelligence (AI) singers, or more precisely, AI songs cloning celebrities' real voices (AI songs), have become a key topic in the entertainment industry and among fan groups across the globe, particularly in China. AI songs have attracted considerable attention from the legal community, as they unsurprisingly raise various ethical and legal issues. Examples of hotly discussed legal issues surrounding AI songs include whether using prior published songs to train AI models violates copyright holders' rights and whether the creators of Al songs breach copyright protection by training AI to sing songs copyrighted by other celebrities or companies. One …

Bias Notification Duty, Eldar Haber, Shai Stern Jan 2024

Bias Notification Duty, Eldar Haber, Shai Stern

Cardozo Arts & Entertainment Law Journal

Algorithms are often tainted with bias that could negatively affect subjects' lives in many aspects. But while policymakers and scholars tend to focus their attention on methods to fix the bias within the algorithm or its output, they neglect a crucial piece of the puzzle: when companies discover bias and fix it in the algorithmic output, they do so behind the scenes. While such a move might debias the output, society remains in the dark about its existence or how it might have affected the outcome. Society thus misses a unique opportunity to study social and cognitive biases that shape …

What Happens When The Conflicts Of Interest Board Does Not Prevent Conflicts? Examining New York City Charter Chapter 68, Abigail Damsky

Cardozo Arts & Entertainment Law Journal

The note critiques the New York Board's advisory opinion on elected officials' use of personal social media accounts, arguing that it contravenes Chapter 68 and Board Rule Section 113 by allowing the use of city resources for political gain, undermining government integrity, and creating transparency issues under the Freedom of Information Law (FOIL). The analysis advocates for revising the advisory opinion to align with existing ethical standards and ensure accountability.

The New Frontier For Bankruptcy: Crypto, Lindy Lofton Jan 2024

The New Frontier For Bankruptcy: Crypto, Lindy Lofton

Cardozo Arts & Entertainment Law Journal

The note examines the regulatory challenges posed by the rise of cryptocurrency platforms like Celsius and FTX, which have faced significant financial difficulties and bankruptcy. These platforms operate similarly to traditional banks and brokerages but lack the same regulatory oversight, leaving customers vulnerable without protections like FDIC insurance. The note argues that adopting legislation akin to the Banking Act of 1933 or the Securities Investor Protection Act (SIPA) could provide necessary safeguards, such as insurance mechanisms similar to FDIC or SIPC. However, the decentralized nature of cryptocurrency and opposition from the crypto community pose challenges to implementing such regulations. The …

Trademark Fair Use Is No Joke, Christine Haight Farley Jan 2024

Trademark Fair Use Is No Joke, Christine Haight Farley

Cardozo Arts & Entertainment Law Journal

The article critiques the Supreme Court's decision in Jack Daniel's Properties v. VIP Products, arguing that the Court missed an opportunity to clarify the relationship between trademark law and the First Amendment. While the Court acknowledged the importance of protecting parodies, it failed to develop a comprehensive framework for balancing trademark rights with free speech. Instead, it introduced a narrow rule that limits the application of the Rogers test, potentially undermining speech protections in trademark disputes. The article contends that the Court's reliance on the likelihood of confusion test is insufficient to address the broader First Amendment implications of …

The Emerging Name, Image, And Likeness Industry And The Perils Of Appropriating "Entrepreneurial" Collegiate Athletes' And "Vengeful" Minors' Property Interests - Historical And Empirical Guidance From Courts' Rights Of Publicity, Misappropriation, And Breach Of Contract Decisions, Willy E. Rice Jan 2024

Rice

Faculty Articles

From the late-1880s to the early-2020s, universities and the collegiate sports industry exploited millions of "college kids" as well as their parent investors by preventing "entrepreneurial athletes" from monetizing their names, images, and likenesses (NILs). Yet, during the same era, the collegiate-athletics industry like the movie and music industries appropriated young people's NILs and pocketed billions of dollars. In 2021, the Supreme Court decided NCAA v. Alston and embraced the Ninth Circuit's ruling in O'Bannon v. NCAA. Ostensibly, these decisions and thirty plus state NIL statutes terminated the "official" exploitation of students. Currently, entrepreneurial students and some parents may commercialize …

Other Faculty of Health Theses

Mycobacterium avium Complex (MAC) are species of the non-tuberculous branch of the Mycobacteria family that is responsible for the development of pulmonary lung disease in immunocompromised individuals. One of the first lines of defence from the host involve a specialised group of tissue macrophages that reside in the lung alveolar space called alveolar macrophages (AM). They have specialised functions that are suitable for recognition of foreign invaders and the ability to tackle these threats though means of a robust immune response. Alternatively, they also feature as key components in a fairly destructive uncontrolled inflammatory response which is the root cause …

The Brexit referendum in June 2016, which led to the UK’s decision to leave the European Union (EU), generated significant concern and anxiety within the United Kingdom's (UK) Higher Education (HE) sector. The potential impact on EU student and staff recruitment, EU research funding, and collaborations with Europe was uncertain, as many Brexit policies and procedures had not been considered by the government when the Leave outcome was announced. EU staff and students working and studying in UK Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) were left contemplating their future in the UK. This thesis examines the impact of Brexit through Charles Wright …

Collaboration In Higher Education: Theorising Co-Creation For Inclusive Learning And Teaching Praxis, Sandra Abegglen Jan 2024

Collaboration In Higher Education: Theorising Co-Creation For Inclusive Learning And Teaching Praxis, Sandra Abegglen

School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences Theses

In the last ten years UK Higher Education has undergone radical processes of reconstruction by focusing on output and value for money, thereby reinforcing the myth of meritocracy. Together with still prevalent notions of developmental learning and pyramidical teaching, this has heightened a culture of individualism. Despite an ostensible emphasis on partnership, isolation and ‘silo-isation’ are evident today with lecturers and students experiencing increased pressure to produce and perform alone, leading to little time for thinking and doing together. This situation was exacerbated by COVID-19 with social distancing measures and remote instruction, which have further increased workloads and loneliness, accompanied …

'Man's Forgotten Friend': Dogs Appointed As Domesticated Companions And The Coronavirus Pandemic, Rebekah Gregory Jan 2024

'Man's Forgotten Friend': Dogs Appointed As Domesticated Companions And The Coronavirus Pandemic, Rebekah Gregory

School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences Theses

The metaphorical confinement of national lockdowns saw the egocentric adoption of dogs appointed as domesticated companions. While public approval of ‘animal’ welfare legislation and the growing popularity of ‘green’ theory and industry has grown, ‘animals’ are still victim to the consumer and the anthropocentric cultures which promote individual, economic, social, and specifically ‘human’ advancement at all costs. Even though the reasons why ‘animals’ are victimised has been researched, how the pandemic has impacted upon this treatment and consumer culture’s/anthropocentrism’s influence has been somewhat absent within academic discussion. In fact, how the global events of COVID-19 have impacted upon dog treatment, …
