Understanding Our Digital Fingerprints: Metadata, Competency, And The Future Practice Of Law, Stacey Lane Rowland

Faculty Publications

Metadata, often referred to as “data about data,” plays a crucial role in the digital world. It encompasses embedded information within electronic documents that reveals details about their creation, modification, and transmission. In legal proceedings, metadata can be both helpful and controversial, as it can expose sensitive information and potentially support or refute claims of fabricated evidence. With the widespread use of smartphones and other electronic devices, individuals generate vast amounts of personal data, including metadata, that can provide detailed insights into their lives.

This Article explores the significance of metadata in various contexts, such as digital photographs, and highlights …

The ‘Mangroves of the Warm Temperate Northwest Atlantic’ province is a regional ecosystem subgroup (level 4 unit of the IUCN Global Ecosystem Typology). It includes the marine ecoregions of Carolinian and Northern Gulf of Mexico. The biota is characterized by 3 species of mangroves: Avicennia germinans, Laguncularia racemosa, and Rhizophora mangle, and 1 mangrove associate Conocarpus erectus, though not all species are equally distributed throughout the province. Mangroves in this province cross the USA and Mexico and are quite unique, as they exist at the latitudinal range limit of the mangrove ecosystem. The majority of mangroves in this province are …

The Contextual Process Of Bystander Intervention In Bias-Motivated Violent Victimization: An Experimental Approach, James Hubbell Jan 2024

The Contextual Process Of Bystander Intervention In Bias-Motivated Violent Victimization: An Experimental Approach, James Hubbell

Electronic Theses & Dissertations (2024 - present)

Hate crimes against Asian Americans and LGBT individuals have been on the rise within the U.S. in the past few years (UCR, 2024). Although these offenses tend to occur in public, numerous stories in the media highlight that few bystanders choose to intervene. To unveil why bystanders choose not to intervene, this dissertation explored the extent to which 1,001 U.S. adults engaged with the five-step situational model for bystander intervention proposed by Latané and Darley (1970). Respondents were recruited through Qualtrics and randomly assigned to a hate scenario involving one of six victims: an Asian American man, an Asian American …

Regulator Preferences And Underinvestment In Drinking Water Infrastructure, Chunyu Guo Jan 2024

Regulator Preferences And Underinvestment In Drinking Water Infrastructure, Chunyu Guo

Electronic Theses & Dissertations (2024 - present)

The infrastructure of U.S. drinking water systems faces chronic issues of low quality and underinvestment. As the water utilities in the U.S. are typically managed and regulated at the local municipal level, investment levels depend on the municipal regulator's preferences. Drawing from a dynamic framework, I specify and estimate the local regulators' objective function over drinking water infrastructure investment. This framework highlights the tradeoff between profit and consumer surplus and reveals how regulator preferences can deviate from net surplus optimization, resulting in underinvestment. My findings provide significant evidence that the drinking water infrastructure is underinvested. I reveal that the regulator's …

Implications Of 5-Methylcytosine (M5c) And N4-Actylcytidine (Ac4c) In Epithelial To Mesenchymal Transition (Emt) In Human Breast Cancer, Manuel A. Pazos Ii Jan 2024

Implications Of 5-Methylcytosine (M5c) And N4-Actylcytidine (Ac4c) In Epithelial To Mesenchymal Transition (Emt) In Human Breast Cancer, Manuel A. Pazos Ii

Electronic Theses & Dissertations (2024 - present)

Breast cancer is a complex disease that continues to haunt women and their loved ones around the world. It is currently the leading cause of cancer-related mortality among women. While most breast cancer patients can catch the disease before progression, others are less fortunate. The prognosis of those whose disease has advanced to metastatic or invasive breast cancer (IBC) is grim. Metastasis occurs when cancer cells undergo epithelial to mesenchymal transition (EMT), migrate to distant body tissues, then form new tumors. It is imperative to better understand the process of EMT to develop superior ways to detect breast cancer before …

Evaluation Of The Physicochemical Properties And Soil Biogeochemistry Of Fire Residues, Lingqun Zeng Jan 2024

Evaluation Of The Physicochemical Properties And Soil Biogeochemistry Of Fire Residues, Lingqun Zeng

Electronic Theses & Dissertations (2024 - present)

Wildland fire is a main driving force in the Earth system and affects ecosystem properties and processes across spatio-temporal scales. The burning of biomass and production of solid fire residues (conventionally termed fire ash) that are a mixture of completely and incompletely burned materials (inorganic ash and pyrogenic carbon), represent the direct and prominent changes by fires. Cycling of the fire residues is an integral component of elemental cycles and can mediate other biogeochemical processes.

This dissertation aims to fill important knowledge gaps in understanding the disturbance of wildland fires to biogeochemical processes in soils. First, this work characterized and …

Electronic Theses & Dissertations (2024 - present)

Background: Body image concerns and other risk factors for disordered eating can emerge in early childhood, but no interventions specifically target these early risk factors to mitigate future eating disorder risk. This study sought to quantify parents' knowledge of factors influencing eating disorder risk in young children, their concerns about their children’s eating behaviors, and perceived need and preferences for a parent education intervention addressing these topics. Methods: Parents (52 mothers, 55 fathers) of children aged 2-6 completed measures of parental eating disorder symptoms and internalized weight bias and child eating behaviors. Open-ended questions explored parents’ concerns about their children’s …

Structural Biology Of Diaphanous-1 And Its Role In Human Pathology, Gregory G. Theophall Jan 2024

Structural Biology Of Diaphanous-1 And Its Role In Human Pathology, Gregory G. Theophall

Electronic Theses & Dissertations (2024 - present)

DIAPH1 is diaphanous related formin which polymerizes actin into filaments and is important to cytoskeleton dynamics.[1, 2] The dysregulation and aberrant activation of DIAPH1 is known to cause deafness[3, 4] and clotting disorders,[5] and is recently implicated in the inflammatory responses associated with cardiovascular and diabetic pathology.[6-9] Despite this, activation of the full length structure and its regulation are poorly understood.[10-12] Therefore, the main objective of this dissertation is to explore the structural, autoinhibitory, and regulatory properties of DIAPH1 in the context of disease pathology. Herein, I show that DIAPH1 has a dynamic structure which is regulated through negative cooperativity, …

All Faculty Scholarship (Archived)

Recent advancements in generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) have raised many fears, risks, and concerns (Kim 2023; Okey et al. 2023). To shed light on the dark side of GenAI, we collected 55,916 posts from X (formerly Twitter). Based on the content of these posts, we manually labeled a sample set with the corresponding dark side, then identified a short, comprehensive list of GenAI dark sides. Using this list, we trained the ReadMe classifier, a supervised learning algorithm on Brandwatch (“Crimson Hexagon and Brandwatch” 2020), to classify the remaining posts. Further analysis, including emotion analysis and analysis of professions and interests …

Banking And Antitrust, Saule T. Omarova, Graham S. Steele Jan 2024

Banking And Antitrust, Saule T. Omarova, Graham S. Steele

Faculty Publications

Money is power. Banks have the extraordinary power to create the nation’s money and credit, which they are entrusted to channel into productive economic uses. Like most other forms of economic power, this publicly granted privilege can be abused for private gain. That is why the “money monopoly” and “money trusts” were once considered one of the most dangerous forms of concentrated private wealth, an existential threat to economic freedom and American democracy. Yet, for the past half-century, the law governing banks and the law curbing monopolies have occupied doctrinally and normatively separate spaces. Today, banking law is seen predominantly …

"The Only Disability In Life Is A Bad Attitude": A Quantitative Exploration Of The Impacts Of Inspiration Porn, Anna H. Burt, Megan Mccarty Jan 2024

"The Only Disability In Life Is A Bad Attitude": A Quantitative Exploration Of The Impacts Of Inspiration Porn, Anna H. Burt, Megan Mccarty

Modern Psychological Studies

Inspiration porn is a social media representation of visibly disabled individuals performing physical activities accompanied by short motivation captions meant to inspire viewers. Critics of inspiration porn hold that it misrepresents the reality of disability and negatively impacts disabled people. This study aimed to quantitatively explore the impacts of inspiration porn on various disability-related variables, as there is limited research on this topic. We hypothesized that exposure to inspiration porn would increase system justification and belief in a just world, decrease support for disability-related policies, and cause viewers to view disabled individuals as sources of inspiration. We also had several …

The Impact Of Parent-Child Interactions On Emotion Regulation In Adulthood, Bridget Burgoyne, Holly Grant-Marsney Jan 2024

The Impact Of Parent-Child Interactions On Emotion Regulation In Adulthood, Bridget Burgoyne, Holly Grant-Marsney

Modern Psychological Studies

Childhood is a time where emotional skills are formed. These skills often reflect the primary caregiver(s) modeling and interactions which may shape emotional intelligence. This research aimed to assess if specific parenting approaches have lasting effects on a person’s ability to emotionally regulate. The sample included 141 adults, who responded to questions reflecting the parenting approaches they observed, and their current state of emotional regulation. Results from our regression analysis showed when controlling for age, parental warmth in childhood predicted one’s later ability to use cognitive reappraisal skills. Results from our correlational analysis showed strong positive associations between overindulgence, cognitive …
