Healing Historic Memories, Thomas Menamparampil Nov 2024

Healing Historic Memories, Thomas Menamparampil

Budhi: A Journal of Ideas and Culture

The history and reality of violence ceaselessly plagues communities all over the world. There is no history book and news agency that lacks a piece on violence. Retaliations and reactions as a result of fear and anger quickly turn to violence whether it is protecting one’s boundaries from invaders, fighting for one’s rights, or even the simple prioritizing of the self over the other. Narratives of protection from violence through violence have been (dangerously) immortalized through the collective memory of these injuries that are relived through both myth and history, promoting the conqueror/conquered and hero(ine)/victim narrative and cultivating prejudice. Despite …

Circum-Navigating The World Island, Among Enemies, John T. Giordano

Budhi: A Journal of Ideas and Culture

Everyday our vision travels across time and space. We see images in the media about atrocities, disruptions, crises, famine, and wars. And in each case, our sense of injustice is awakened. We feel outrage and indignation based upon our ideals and value systems, which were formed through our traditions and religions. But in this age where the power of media and information is so powerful, what we see is often manufactured to appeal to our values. While these values circulate among the images we see in cyberspace, these manipulations are rooted in certain realities: geography, natural resources, and power relationships. …

A Tale Of Two Walls: A Comparison Of The Green Wall Projects In Inner Mongolia And The Sahelo-Saharan Regions, Daniel Chen Ratilla Nov 2024

A Tale Of Two Walls: A Comparison Of The Green Wall Projects In Inner Mongolia And The Sahelo-Saharan Regions, Daniel Chen Ratilla

Budhi: A Journal of Ideas and Culture

Desertification as a bio-physical stressor threatens food and water security, and is exacerbated by climate change. Other issues such as peace, gender equity, and livelihood are some examples of socio-economic issues also connected to desertification. This is apparent in the cases of Inner Mongolia and the Sahelo-Saharan region, where desertification has spurred the creation of afforestation projects, colloquially known as “Green Walls”: these are the Three-North Shelterbelt Project, and the Great Green Wall of the Sahara and the Sahel Initiative, respectively. This paper explores the principles of environmental ethics (such as vulnerability, common goods, biological and cultural diversity, and environmental …

Nakaparsuaan, Kadagaan, And Panaglunit Ti Daga: Climate Justice And Environmental Ethics In Ilokano Life, Aurelio S. Agcaoili

Budhi: A Journal of Ideas and Culture

The work offers an interpretation of the world as understood and being lived until today by Ilokanos. Such a reading involves the plumbing into linguistic and cultural data as proofs of an inchoate philosophy that has been preserved in the minds of the Ilokano people and which continues to guide their conduct. The world, understood as the physical environment, peoples, and communities, is linked back to the problem of social justice and stewardship of living and nonliving things, to the issue of who calls the shots in the unethical exploitation of these resources, and to the lessons that can be …

Harnessing 360-Degree Video To Prompt Users To Think Along With Pro-Environmental Campaign Messages, Mincheol Shin, Heejae Lee Nov 2024

Harnessing 360-Degree Video To Prompt Users To Think Along With Pro-Environmental Campaign Messages, Mincheol Shin, Heejae Lee

Mass Communications - All Scholarship

Three-hundred-and-sixty-degree videos visualized through virtual reality (VR) technologies are recognized as an effective tool for fostering positive attitudes towards environmental stewardship by immersing users in persuasive storytelling narratives. However, a lack of an overarching framework hinders the understanding of its role in promoting prosocial environmental behaviors, particularly its effects on information processing and behavioral intentions. Notably, recent studies have suggested that feeling transported into a VR environment (i.e., presence) could positively bias message evaluation and the way people process information by activating heuristics connected to immersive experiences (i.e., the bias hypothesis of the heuristic-systematic model). Drawing on this proposition, this …

Speech emotion recognition (SER) is an emerging technology that utilizes speech sounds to identify a speaker’s emotional state. Computational intelligence is receiving increasing attention from academics, health, and social media applications. This research was conducted to identify emotional states in verbal communication. We applied a publicly available dataset called RAVDEES. The data augmentation process involved adding noise, applying time stretching, shifting, and pitch, and extracting the features zero cross rate (ZCR), chroma shift, Mel-Frequency Cepstral Coefficients (MFCC), and a spectrogram. In addition, we used many pretrained deep learning models, such as VGG16, ResNet50, Xception, InceptionV3, and DenseNet121. Out of all …

Sultan Qaboos University Medical Journal

Hyperreactio luteinalis (HL) and ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome during pregnancy are both benign conditions where the ovaries are enlarged with presence of multiple thin-walled cysts. The differential diagnosis is ovarian malignancy. Hyperandrogenism with resultant maternal virilisation could be seen in some cases of HL as well as in androgen secreting tumours. We report a 41-year-old female patient who underwent ovulation induction due to secondary infertility at a high-risk pregnancy unit in Muscat, Oman, in 2022. She had recurrent hospital admission with abdominal pain and large multicystic enlargement of both ovaries. She developed virilisation features by 35 weeks of pregnancy. Lower segment …

Silence Is Golden: Publicly-Traded Corporations Should Not Speak Out On Social Or Political Issues, Alyssa Zern Nov 2024

Silence Is Golden: Publicly-Traded Corporations Should Not Speak Out On Social Or Political Issues, Alyssa Zern

Senior Honors Theses

In a social and political landscape that is becoming quite divided, the role of publicly traded corporations in this landscape is up for much debate. On one end, speaking out can improve a corporation’s overall brand image, help relate to socially conscious customers, and help maintain customer loyalty. On the other end, however, it creates significant risks. Speaking out can alienate stakeholders, create damaging backlash, and generate detrimental financial repercussions. This significant paradox asks an important question that must be answered by each company at some point: Should corporations remain neutral on contentious issues to perhaps protect their business interests, …

Enhancing Muscle Health And Modulating Immune Response With Galectin-1 In Lgmd2b/R2 Models, Stefannia Esparza Pulido Nov 2024

Enhancing Muscle Health And Modulating Immune Response With Galectin-1 In Lgmd2b/R2 Models, Stefannia Esparza Pulido

Theses and Dissertations

Limb-Girdle Muscular Dystrophy Type 2B/R2 (LGMD2B/R2) is a type of dysferlinopathy, a progressive muscle-wasting disorder caused by mutations in the dysferlin gene. Hallmarks of the disease include chronic inflammation, impaired muscle regeneration, and eventual muscle degeneration. Currently, no FDA-approved therapies are available for dysferlinopathies. Recombinant human Galectin-1 (rHsGal-1) has shown multiple roles in maintaining skeletal muscle homeostasis, promoting muscle repair, enhancing myogenesis, and modulating inflammation by downregulating the NF-κB pathway. The ability of rHsGal-1 to modulate the immune response is particularly promising for therapeutic applications in patients with LGMD2B/R2. In this study, we evaluated the effects of rHsGal-1 in a …

Functions Of Tam Receptors And Ligands Protein S And Gas6 In Atherosclerosis And Cardiovascular Disease, Teagan Prouse, Samarpan Majumder, Rinku Majumder

School of Medicine Faculty Publications

Atherosclerosis and cardiovascular disease are associated with high morbidity and mortality in industrialized nations. The Tyro3, Axl, and Mer (TAM) family of receptor tyrosine kinases is involved in the amplification or resolution of atherosclerosis pathology and other cardiovascular pathology. The ligands of these receptors, Protein S (PS) and growth arrest specific protein 6 (Gas6), are essential for TAM receptor functions in the amplification and resolution of atherosclerosis. The Axl-Gas6 interaction has various effects on cardiovascular disease. Mer and PS dampen inflammation, thereby protecting against atherosclerosis progression. Tyro3, the least studied TAM receptor in cardiovascular disease, appears to protect against fibrosis …

Environmental Governance Challenges Of Indigenous Forest Recognition: Climate Solution Ideal And Its Uneven Outcomes In Indonesia, Abdurrahman Abdullah, Micah R. Fisher, Muhammad Alif K. Sahide Nov 2024

Environmental Governance Challenges Of Indigenous Forest Recognition: Climate Solution Ideal And Its Uneven Outcomes In Indonesia, Abdurrahman Abdullah, Micah R. Fisher, Muhammad Alif K. Sahide

Forest and Society

Formal policies on Indigenous land and forest rights recognition are increasingly being promoted as a climate solution in global forums. While this suggests a clear discursive victory for environmental justice movements, there has been less attention on the aftermaths of recognition. This in part owes to the novelty of policies on Indigenous land and forest recognition, but also due to the tendency among proponents to view formal legal victories as a means and ends of advocacy. In this paper, we spotlight what happens after recognition in Kajang, the site of the first Indigenous community to formally regain authority over state …

Changing Partners: Male Comradery And The Decline Of Homosocial Dance In American Film, Christopher Sparks Nov 2024

Changing Partners: Male Comradery And The Decline Of Homosocial Dance In American Film, Christopher Sparks

Longwood Senior Theses

After the decline of the American movie musical genre in the late 1960s to early 1970s, there have been several attempts at reviving the genre and paying homage to movie musicals from the 1930s to 1950s. One such example, the 2016 film La La Land, received critical acclaim from audiences and critics alike. Although La La Land features numerous references to the 1952 movie musical Singin’ in the Rain and references to the song and dance film spectacles choreographed by Busby Berkeley in the 1930s, La La Land fails to portray spectacles involving multiple men singing and dancing together. …

Eleven Quick Tips For Properly Handling Tabular Data, Marla Hertz, Ashley Mcneill Nov 2024

Eleven Quick Tips For Properly Handling Tabular Data, Marla Hertz, Ashley Mcneill

Libraries Professional Work

Proper handling of tabular data, i.e., spreadsheets, is an essential skill for most researchers. Well-curated tabular data has built-in quality control, is machine readable by downstream analysis applications, and ultimately saves researchers’ time. The increased expectation of data sharing grounded by funder and publisher policies has made it even more crucial to format and describe tabular data properly to ensure that it is FAIR—findable, accessible, interoperable, and reusable [1]. However, many researchers are not formally trained in the data management skills necessary to build strong tabular datasets. They may also struggle to anticipate the future needs and potential applications of …

Beyond Climate In Placencia, Belize: Navigating Environmental Change In The Anthropocene, Rory E. Mckenna Nov 2024

Beyond Climate In Placencia, Belize: Navigating Environmental Change In The Anthropocene, Rory E. Mckenna

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Examining opportunities for climate resilience requires an evaluation of lived experiences of environmental change which benefits from transdisciplinary perspectives. This research examines those experiences through the lens of anthropogenic change which allows for a critical focus on local conditions of environmental change specific to Placencia Village, Belize, over time. An anthropology of the anthropocene framing shifts the focus from the results of the global phenomenon responsible for climate change to the implications of local human-caused environmental change on natural systems, human-environment relationships and dynamics, and the future trajectories of these relationships. Through the use of interviews, go-alongs, participatory mapping, transdisciplinary …

Ginhawa As Ethic Of Panatà: Body Politics And The Devotion To The Black Nazarene, Mark Joseph T. Calano

Budhi: A Journal of Ideas and Culture

Operating within the ambiguity of the sacred and the secular, the devotion to the Black Nazarene in Quiapo is expressed in the different body performances and prayers directed towards the poón (image). These devotions, narratives, and norms make possible not only the performance, but also the celebration and repetition of faith experiences mediated by the body. The paper investigates the linguistic and body performances that makes possible one of the most attended religious performances in the Philippines in three parts. The first part looks into the body dynamics involved when participating in the devotion to the Black Nazarene. On the …

Ethics Of Refusal: Globalization And The Penan People's Struggle For Recognition, Jeffry Ocay Nov 2024

Ethics Of Refusal: Globalization And The Penan People's Struggle For Recognition, Jeffry Ocay

Budhi: A Journal of Ideas and Culture

In this article I explore ways in which the Penan of Sarawak, Malaysia, whose lives have been impacted by globalization, draw on their rich cultural heritage to demand recognition. I argue that an articulation of a new rather than traditional form of struggle for recognition should come from the margins of the global system. Their indigenous practices, when linked to neocolonial domination, point to a possible “outside” of the system by highlighting the system’s destructive potential rendered invisible “at the center” and by embodying ways of living that promote social solidarity and preserve the environment. I argue further that by …

The Stranger Society: The Case Of Economic And Social Development In The Tropics, Peter Murphy Nov 2024

The Stranger Society: The Case Of Economic And Social Development In The Tropics, Peter Murphy

Budhi: A Journal of Ideas and Culture

The economic and social prosperity of nations are usually attributed to functional requirements—such as honest government, effective transport and communication networks, health care and education—and development strategies such as investment in infrastructure. However, beyond a certain point peak economic and social success relies as much on human ingenuity as on capital investment. The article proposes that the world’s most prosperous societies have three recurring characteristics that foster such ingenuity: (1) they are all closely connected to trading portals, (2) they nourish paradoxical belief systems that underscore a proclivity for intellectual abstraction and pattern-based interaction, and (3) they are stranger societies …
